90.155 Social Processes and Social InstitutionsRUBRIC for Assignment AA Reflection on a
Social ProcessPurpose:The purpose of this assignment is to have you apply the sociological
imagination, “the awareness of the relationship between personal experience and the wider
society”, to your life. You will choose a social process covered in class to critically assess the
manner in which it has shaped your personal experiences. The point of this work will be to
make you realize that your life situation is affected by larger social forces that shape and
guide your choices.Tasks:The total length of your reflection should be a minimum of 500
words, and a maximum of 750 words. It should be divided into two parts, of equal length. In
the first part you will discuss the process in question; in the second part you will discuss
your life (or the experiences of a closed one).PART 1: Choose one Social Process, name it,
and define it, basing yourself on the textbook and your notes, provide a definition. Be as
precise as possible and use your own words (no direct citation allowed)!Explain how
process chosen relates to a specific theorist; make sure to name the theorist and situate
their work in the appropriate paradigm.Example: you have chosen to write on the PROCESS
of socialization; specifically, you will address the CONCEPT of the looking glass self; the
THEORIST in question is Charles Cooley, who belongs to the PARADIGM of Symbolic
Interactionism.PART 2: Explain in detail how this process has affected your life of the life of
a person that is important to you.Explain: what have you gained from looking at this process
from the critical perspective of sociology? In what ways has this new perspective helped
you make sense of your life? How will this knowledge impact the choices that you make,
moving forward?Criteria for evaluation:The A reflection is uses accurate sociological
language, includes brief but clear definitions and explanations, and correctly provides a
brief overview of the paradigm and how the chosen term or theory fits within it. The
autobiographical portion provides a detailed explanation of the life outcomes the person
has experienced, speaks directly and clearly to the new outlook that the lens of sociology
has made available, and speaks to the manner in which the person can critically move
forward now that these process’ mechanisms have been understood. The B reflection is
more generic and does not fully cover the necessary definitions and concepts and theories
required; it may provide a sketch of the paradigm but only generally address how the
chosen process or theory fits within it. The autobiographical portion may provide a detailed
explanation of the life outcomes the person has experienced, but feels slightly out of
2. balance; more attention has been dedicated to the personal life analysis; the student speaks
directly and clearly about the new outlook that the lens of sociology has made available, and
speaks to the manner in which the person can critically move forward now that these
process’ mechanisms have been understood. The C reflection uses generic sociological
language, may name the process but does not provide clear definitions and explanations,
and may omit to provide a brief overview of the paradigm and how the chosen term or
theory fits within it. The autobiographical portion is out of balance with the first: too much
attention has been dedicated to this portion. Still, the narration may not refer back to the
process in clear ways nor consistently. Lots of time has been dedicated to a discussion of the
life outcomes the person has experienced, but the student has not taken time to address the
new outlook that the lens of sociology has made available. Little time has been dedicated to
the manner in which the person can critically move forward now that these process’
mechanisms have been understood.A note on Plagiarism: YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO CITE
DIRECTLY FROM THE TEXTBOOK OR YOUR NOTES! Please explain yourself using your ow
words. Cutting and pasting LANGUAGE FORM from a website or an article is a from of
ACADEMIC DISHONESTY called PLAGIARISM.If you wish to take a look at a reflexive
