The circulatory system consists of the heart, blood vessels, and blood. The pulmonary circuit carries deoxygenated blood to the lungs to be oxygenated and then back to the heart. The systemic circuit carries oxygenated blood around the body and returns deoxygenated blood to the heart. Blood contains red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, water, and nutrients and waste products. The heart is a muscular pump with four chambers that uses valves to ensure blood flows in one direction through the pulmonary and systemic circuits via arteries, capillaries, and veins.

5. The pulmonary circuit
• The pulmonary circuit carries
blood to the lungs to be

dioxide is removed from the
blood, and oxygen taken up by
the haemoglobin in the red blood
cells.

13. RED BLOOD CELL

healthy adult has about 35 trillion of them. The
body creates these cells at a rate of about 2.4
million a second, and they each have a life span
of about 120 days.

them in ever-increasing numbers. Still,
compared to the number of red blood cells in
the body, the number of white blood cells is
low. Most healthy adults have about 700 times
as many red blood cells as white ones
