Spelling rules for the –ing form
• With most verbs we add –ing to the verb.
Drink – Drinking Eat - Eating
Clean – Cleaning Play – Playing
Study – Studying Sing – Singing
Sleep – Sleeping Cook – Cooking
Wear – Wearing Laugh - Laughing
Write – Writing Have – Having
Come – Coming Live - Living
• Verbs ending with consonant + vowel + consonant
we double the final consonant.
Sit – Sitting Stop – Stopping
Run – Running Swim – Swimming
Cut – Cutting
•With verbs ending in –ie, we change the –ie to –y and add ing
lie – lying die - dying

Are you playing?
We can also use the Present Continuous Tense to talk about activities
happening around now, and not necessarily this very moment.
Examples 
   Sally is studying really hard for her exams this week. 
Tim is exercising a lot these days
I am working a lot this week at the University
The Present Continuous Tense is also used to talk about activities
happening in the near future, especially for planned future events.
Examples 
   I am seeing my dentist on Wednesday. 
We are having spaghetti for dinner
She is coming to my apartment this evening
Stative verbs
Some verbs that express permanent states are not normally used in the
Present Continuous. These are called stative verbs.
•Verbs of the senses:
see, hear, taste, smell, feel
•Verbs describing feelings:
like, dislike, love, hate, want, prefer
•Verbs describing thoughts, beliefs, etc:
think, believe, know, understand, guess, imagine, hope,
remember, forget
•Other verbs:
seem, appear, weigh, cost ,own, belong to, depend on
