21. What is Bluemix?
21
Bluemix is an open-standard, cloud-based platform for building, managing,
and running applications of all types (web, mobile, big data, new smart devices,
and so on).
Go Live in Seconds
The developer can choose
any language runtime or
bring their own. Zero to
production in one command.
DevOps
Development, monitoring,
deployment, and logging tools
allow the developer to run the
entire application.
APIs and Services
A catalog of IBM, third party,
and open source API services
allow the developer to stitch an
application together in minutes.
On-Prem Integration
Build hybrid environments.
Connect to on-premise assets
plus other public and private
clouds.
Flexible Pricing
Sign up in minutes. Pay as
you go and subscription
models offer choice and
flexibility.
Layered Security
IBM secures the platform and
infrastructure and provides
you with the tools to secure
your apps.
22. Design Point for Smarter Process Bluemix Services
• Smarter Process Bluemix Services are
designed as “bite-sized” capabilities from the
integrated suite
• Self-service and pay-as-you-go model
• Designed to be included in applications that
need workflow or rules capabilities
• REST API to access that can compliment an
existing implementation of BPM or ODM
23. 23
Workflow Service
Enables developers to easily create stateful workflows orchestrating people and services to create rich
new mobile and web apps, or extend existing ones, using an agile development approach

24. A Hello World Workflow
// Wait for a GET invocation at the ‘hi' endpoint.
start = RECEIVEGET(null, 'hi');
// Reply back to the GET invocation.
reply = REPLYGET(start, 'hi', 'Hi there, please come back.');
// Wait for a GET invocation at the ‘back' endpoint.
waitForComeback = RECEIVEGET(reply, 'back');
// Reply back to the GET invocation.
comeback = REPLYGET(waitForComeback, 'back', 'Good bye.');

25. Use Cases
• Utilize Workflow when Mobile / Web app needs to:
• Invoke multiple services that return responses at different times
• Interact with users who respond three days later
• Correlate multiple responses and combine their results

26. Rules
a Smarter Process high value service
Enables developers to spend less time recoding and testing when the business
policy changes. This is made possible because the service separates the
business logic from the application logic.
Familiar Environment for Authoring
Developers can download an Eclipse
based authoring tool and author rules in a
familiar user-friendly environment.
Separate Business Logic
Business logic is authored separately from
the application which enables easier
change in business policy / logic and
codified capture of business policies,
practices and regulations..
Business logic is easily expressed with
business rules to automate decisions with
the fidelity of a subject matter expert.
Bridge Business Users and
Developers
Deploy Versioned Business Logic
Multiple versions of the Business logic can
be tested and deployed in the same Rules
Service. Switching, upgrading, sharing
business logic across applications has
never been easier.

Shepherd Color streamlines processing chemical batches with IBM BPM and migrates environment to IBM BPM on Cloud
Shepherd Color's first use case for implementing IBM BPM was to automate their manufacturing process, called the Batch Sheet. This IBM BPM process is called Digital Batch Sheet, the application has over 20 users, 5 - 12 pages of manual instructions were required to make a new batches of chemicals and with BPM based Digital Batch Sheet, SAP data pulls are automated along with the updates of used inventory back into SAP, also quality testing in the lab is automated. There were two full time inventory clerks when the Batch Sheet was all manual. Now with the automated Digital Batch Sheet, one of the inventory clerks retired and a replacement was not required and the production manager has had 50% of his time freed up for other more strategic tasks.
Blue Shield of California is a not-for-profit health plan dedicated to providing Californians with access to high-quality health care at an affordable price. With over 3 million members and 5,000 employees, they are one of the largest healthcare providers in CA. Motivated by the Affordable Care Act requirements, Blue Shield of California needed to create an exceptional web experience for their Members, Providers, Producers and Employees. With Open Enrollment approaching, their new Member Portal needed to be up and running quickly. Hear how they used the IBM PureApplication System to revolutionize their portal environment and get new services up and running in hours vs. weeks.
