International tests like PISA and TIMSS are often cited as indicators of a country's economic strength and global competitiveness. However, this document questions the correlation between a nation's performance on international achievement tests and its economic indicators like GDP and global competitiveness index scores. While some countries with high achievement scores also have strong economies, the relationships are complex and indirect, with cultural, historical and policy factors also influencing both educational and economic outcomes. A simple focus on test scores may not accurately or fully predict a country's true economic strength or global competitiveness.
