(usually used with a plural verb) the means of communication, as radio and television, newspapers, and magazines, that reach or influence people widely: The media are covering the speech tonight.

  • 4. Is Social Media JUST Personal? Because of the nature of social media, the lines have blurred between personal and professional lives Creating or maintaining a personal connection via social media or in person can be your next lead

  • 7. Be Social Social Media has made it easier to connect – Leaders and hiring managers – Others looking for help People are ALWAYS asking for referrals online, you just gotta know where to look
  • 9. Craft Your Niche Get Your Elevator Pitch DOWN Think about: - Profile picture - Cover Photo on FB - Bio (should be the same) - Competition and what makes YOU stand out - Appearance in public
  • 10. Have a Plan Give yourself goals – Reach out to 5 different people each week – Attend one meetup – Ask one person to coffee each week – Any others? Reward yourself

  • 12. Target Influencers Every field has established experts and influencers – Engage via social media – Share their content + comment on their blog – Put yourself out there – Learn how they connect with people

Think in terms of an elevator pitch-because you should be attending many industry events Get a professional picture and have that be your profile for all social networks Have your personal cover photo on Facebook say something about what your business does (hire a graphics person to help)Have the same bio for all social networks – that says what you doDo your research (competition and what makes YOU stand out)
  4. Do your homework on privacy settings on your social networks (okay, Facebook) if you want to keep your family pictures from showing up. The definition of private online is almost a joke. But no matter what your career field, it’s important to always think twice before making a post. I actually taught a group of 7th graders about spam on Twitter and we talked about the openness of the internet and how easy it is for anyone to connect with someone that they want to –It is up to you to think about what you post. And if you are uncomfortable with people knowing you are at the park with your kids, don’t post right away. “We are always connected to work whether we realize it or not” and thus we need to be mindful of what we say and who is listening. 
  5. Every field has established experts and influencers. Identify and reach out to those folks in your industry. You can learn how they achieved and maintained their current stature. Rather than immediately requesting that they share your content, engage with them via social media, comment on their blog posts, or introduce yourself following a talk. Over time, the influencer will be more inclined to follow and share your work, lending you further credibility.
