Moving On

Before I get phone calls and emails, let me say that this is not about my current relationship.
We are still together and happy.
I wrote this about leaving a crappy relationship (obviously) that I was in years ago.

I see I play the fool

Hindsight’s 20/20
And I see it clearly now
This needed to happen
Someway, somehow
I loved you true
Right to the end
Now I’m unsure
Can we even be friends?
You’ve had my heart
For too many years
You had me unconditionally
While I had pain and tears
The tears gathered in a puddle
Around my feet
Liquid shackles so heavy
They made me weak
So heavy and burdened
My soul could’ve died
The hope of your love
Is what kept me alive
I’m drowning, can’t breathe now
With my last dying breath
I reach out to God
And say to myself
“No more can you hurt me”
My eyes can now see
“No more will I cry for you”
And now I can breathe
“No more will I wait”
Slowly I can move
“No more will I need you”
I’ve got something to prove
“No more will you use me”
I can stand on my own
“I will not be held down
By the chances that you’ve blown”
The shackles are broken
The tears have all dried
My prayers are answered

4. I feel better inside
I may start at the bottom
But I’ll fight my way through
Don’t you worry about me
You’ve got plenty to do
You made this bed
And in it you’ll lie
