Vision and mission
The purpose of the non-profit organization Sharing Awareness is to, through fund-raising
activities, create resources for development work within the education sector in developing
countries. These resources shall be used in order to combat poverty and to promote economic
and cultural development, using e-learning as the basic foundation of the work. The
development work shall be carried out in co-operation with local partners in the recipient
countries.
The resources shall mainly be used for contributing towards the realization of the 2nd
Millennium Goal (MDG) number, by using the Sharing Awareness method. As one of the
eight goals adopted by world leaders in 2000 and set to be achieved in 2015, the 2nd MDG is
centered around achieving universal primary education and making sure that all children,
boys and girls alike, will be able to complete a full course of quality primary schooling. The
Sharing Awareness method offers online teacher training, specifically geared towards African
countries.
Local actors
Sharing Awareness offers online teacher training (distance learning), working closely with
local partners in Somalia, Pakistan, Ghana, Kenya, and Burkina Faso. Our goal is to provide
the best teacher possible for every child.
Several members of Sharing Awarenss have been working with online teacher training in
Africa since 2001.
The teacher trainers working for Sharing Awareness are qualified teachers working from
Sweden and other countries, tutoring schools and teachers in the recipient countries stated
above. This unique working method lays the foundation for a highly flexible international
teacher training where teachers in the recipient countries have the possibility of studying
wherever and whenever they wish, thus adapting to their often very busy schedule.
Organization and board of directors
The work of Sharing Awareness is rooted in the Scandinavian educational tradition, with the
goal of creating long-term solutions for growth and sustainable development through
education. The founders of Sharing Awareness, as well as many members of the organization,
have 15 years experience in the fields of adult education and developing projects in Africa.
They work within the cooperative economic association of Mångkulturellt
2
3. Folkbildningscentrum (MKFC) which manages adult education, has founded a folk high
school, and has extensive experience working with education in developing countries.
Members of the board

Fayez Chahrstan
All members of the board, as well as the deputies, work within the MKFC group. Sharing
Awareness has been accommodated in the MKFC premises and have been allowed to use
MKFC’s infrascture in order to carry out the work of the organization. All the work done by
members of the board, and others who have committed their time and efforts to Sharing
Awareness in 2010, was voluntary and no salaries have been paid.
Teacher training programmes
Sharing Awareness offers teacher training for both pre-school, primary and secondary levels.
All teacher training programmes are based on value-neutral curricula in line with the
Millennium Development Goals. The training is integrated in the daily work of the teachers in
the recipient countries. All tutoring and materials are offered online, giving participating
teachers in the recipient countries a higher degree of flexibility and a greater chance of
managing both work and private life along with their studies. Participation in different Net
Communities expands the classroom and the learning environment, thus creating an inflow of
innovative ideas to the participating schools, teachers, students and parents in the recipient
countries.
In order to create future citizens of the world who can and will work to improve their
communities, qualified teachers are needed – teachers with the ability to stimulate their
students to become local as well as global citizens. Also needed is knowledge and insight into
new technology in order to make informed decisions about health, environment, and other
great challenges. Teachers play a vital part in helping their students take in the knowledge and
the values needed for understanding the world around them and for becoming tomorrow’s
change-makers.
Sharing Awareness is working both to train unqualified teachers in existing teacher training
programmes and to develop new kinds of teacher training where unqualified teachers already
working in schools receive an international teacher training, which is integrated in their daily
working life through e-learning.
Because resources are often scarce for teacher training programmes in developing countries,
e-learning in the work place is an excellent method. The lack of unqualified teachers is a great
loss to any society. E-learning is cost-effective, up-to-date, and highly flexible, thus offering
3
4. better results for both the individual teacher, the students, the school, and for the community
at large. That’s a vital step towards improving general living conditions.
The lack of qualified teachers affects all sectors of society and the prospects for positive
development.
ICT for development
Sharing Awareness uses a unique End-toEnd eLearning™ method, based in a passion for
providing citizens with basic positive life skills. Education is a vital means to this end. E-
learning is characterized by a high degree of flexibility that can be adapted to local contexts
and requests, and is a central part of this unique method and mission.
The cost-effectiveness of e-learning means that more projects can be carried through. All the
work of Sharing Awareness is carried out with the basic assumption that e-learning and ICT
in education is vital in accomplishing long-term positive change and in bridging the global
digital divide.
Using ICT for development in innovative ways is a vital part of the work of Sharing
Awareness. Long-term goals include:
- Eradication of inequalities in education
- A focus on authentic learning environments
- Health awareness education on grassroots level
- Increased cost-effectiveness in education
- Increased possibilties for the participation of all citizens in society
Priority areas of work for Sharing Awareness
Gender Equality
Education is power, and knowledge gives confidence. Sharing Awareness is working to
strengthen the position of women and girls in society. Education is an important path to
higher self-esteem and to increased knowledge about one’s rights as a human being. The goal
is that 50% of the participating teachers in the receipient countries shall be women, with the
hope that they will become positive local role-models for other women and encourage others
to take an active part in civil society. Traditional views on ’male’ and ’female’ can thus be
challenged, especially as female teachers gain knowledge in dealing with computers and new
technology, which is often considered a stricly male domain.
Democracy
Through the teacher training programmes, teachers in the recipient countries gain access to
international networks and new knowledge can be transferred into their local schools. More
qualified teachers also eliminates the risks of strict hierarchies between teachers and the
school managent. The concept of democracy is integrated as an important subject in the
teacher training programmes and students are thus given important tools to help them
understand the world around them and to become change-makers in their communities.
Peace perspective
The teacher training programmes center around problem-based approaches, which the
teachers in the recipient countries apply in their own teaching. The programmes are focused
4
5. on educating teachers who are able to stimulate their students to become local and global
citizens with a great know-how in new technology. Lack of knowledge can result in prejudice
and in fundamentalist views on the world. Increasing awareness and providing quality
education is vital in creating a greater understanding for other people and in maintaining a
peaceful world. This benefits both economic, social and cultural development.
Environment
There are many benefits in using ICT for education – one of them is environmental.
Experiences from previous projects reveal that through this unique method of e-learning, not
only the children but also their families are engaged in the learning process. Working
intensively with themes such as environment, health and sustainable energy has proven to
give great results not only within but also outside the schools, in the wider community,
increasing the understanding for and changing the attitudes towards these issues. There have
been changes in local unequal structures, for instance when it comes to access to natural
resources. All materials used in the teacher training programmes are found online, which is
more environmentally efficient than using traditional books.
Environmental partners
Environmental Online (http://www.joensuu.fi/eno/basics/briefly.htm) is used in the teacher
training programmes and Sharing Awareness has integrated their environmental programme
in the training. ENO-Environment Online is a global online school and a network for
sustainable development and environmental awareness. Thousands of schools from 144
countries are participating. The ENO programme has been running since 2000. The main
focus is to look at the local environment from a global perspective: act local – think global.
Information is collected from different local communities and is then shared online, on a
global scale, on the ENO website. Doing practical environmental work enables students (as
well as teachers, parents, and the surrounding community) to raise their awareness about these
important issues.
Long-term work of Sharing Awareness
A development project focusing on teacher training need to run at least three years to be
effective and to have a specifically strong impact in the school and the local community.
During the first stages, the Sharing Awareness teacher training focuses on questions of
influence, centered around the teacher’s own commitment, the involvement of parent support
groups, and the connection of local businesses to the school.
All learning is done online. Local tutors have the practical and theoretical knowledge to take
over the responsibility for the teacher training – the already trained teachers can go on to tutor
a group of new teachers on their own. In the long run, the participating schools have the
potential of using all this collective knowledge in order to start their own teachers’ training
college. In those countries where the local authorities are involved in the projects, the goal is
to continue the teacher training programmes in the participating schools with no external
financing. The complete teacher training programme is packaged – and locally adapted – and
can be found online through a learning platform. A complete ’library’, with all the course
books needed, is freely available on USB flash drives.
Sharing Awareness works with the basic assumption that when rights-based education is a
natural part of daily school life, the school will be positively transformed forever. This change
process should start as early as pre-school and then continue all through the education system.
5
6. A welfare society is an important route towards more tolerant attitudes. Welfare is based on
well-functioning education that provides children and adults with the tools to influence their
own lives and to start creating the future of their dreams.
Goals and fulfillment of goals
There is an increasing global shortage of qualified teachers, and a concomitant lack of access
to higher education. Overcrowded universities result in many people, who dream of becoming
teachers, not being able to fulfill their goals. Others are unable to leave their family or current
work in order to pursue their education.
The board members of Sharing Awareness, and several others who have committed their time
and efforts to the organization, have been working intensively with these issues throughout
2010. These efforts have resulted in countless meetings with leading actors within the field of
e-learning in partner countries in Europe, Africa, and Asia. These include seminar leaders and
writers and the meetings have been a vital part in developing important networks for Sharing
Awareness. It has become very clear that a high degree of curiosity and commitment in
working with ICT-based learning characterizes many developing countries. The online
teacher training programmes have been met with a high degree of enthusiasm. New exciting
meetings have laid the foundation for a number of innovative solutions and ideas.
Sharing Awarenss has now completed its first year of activity. During 2010, Sharing
Awareness has not carried out any development projects in the recipient countries.
Discussions continue in order to develop sustainable projects that can be successfully pursued
in these countries. At the time, there is not enough fundraising acitivies for new projects to be
feasible. The main focus during 2010 has been on the important work of constructing the
necessary infrastructure for the organization to run smoothly, such as general routines and
digital tools. A great part of the work has centered around developing the organization’s
external communication, such as a website and a Twitter/Facebook account. Methods for
fundraising through the website and through SMS have also been developed.
Fundraising methods
The fundraising activities of Sharing Awareness are geared towards both individuals (i.e. the
general public) as well as the corporate sector. During 2010, however, the time dedicated to
fundraising has been very limited. Members of the board as well as other people committed to
the purpose and goals of Sharing Awareness have, however, been raising some funds.
Existing resources have been used to develop a website and a fundraising structure for the
website, where donations can be accepted through Paypal, SMS, and a Facebook Cause.
Sharing Awareness charges no member fee.
Inspectorate
Sharing Awareness is inspected by Svensk Insamlingskontroll, SFI, which controls that all
fundraising is done in a responsible way and that the money is directed to the projects without
any unreasonable charges. Sharing Awareness has an account, Plusgiro 90 02 08-0, which is
approved by SFI as a legitimate 90-account (90-konto).
6
7. Future prospects for 2011 and beyond
Sharing Awareness will continue the efforts through 2011 to increase fundraising for the
stated purpose. During 2010 the emphasis was put on the financial and personal resources
needed to start up the organization and its external communication. The working methods of
Sharing Awareness are exclusively online-based and the assumption is that fundraising
through social media and mobile phones will increase greatly in Sweden, just as it has in the
United States.
http://www.netwitsthinktank.com/mobile/the-rise-of-the-mobile.htm
During 2011, Sharing Awareness will allocate more resources for fundraising. There is now a
functioning infrastructure and a system for accepting donations through the website. More
work will also be done with developing direct debit (autogiro) and social media. Fundraising
activities will be connected to the teacher training programmes through the establishment of a
direct communication between donors and students. The goal is to find individuals,
enterprises, and organizations who are interested in ICT and/or teacher training.
In Africa and Asia there are great needs that correspond well with the purpose of Sharing
Awareness. Private enterprises and interest organizations/pressure groups, based in Sweden
and other ”Western” countries, may be interested in working with development issues through
teacher training programmes. The education field is vast and teachers’ organizations and
private education companies can assist in helping Sharing Awareness develop, while
simultaneously gaining valuable insights that can later be used to start up private schools or to
sell education to the public sector if they wish to do so. Computer usage, and especially the
use of mobile phones, have increased heavily in the developing world. By involving
companies within the IT sector in the teacher training programmes, the knowledge of ICT and
new technology will increase in the participating schools. From a long-term perspective, all
partners (companies or organizations) who participate in the projects of Sharing Awareness
will develop a valuable pre-understanding for important emering markets in developing
countries.
The board members of Sharing Awareness all believe in positive developments during 2011.
Sharing Awareness aims to keep all expenses for fundraising, administration and the
execution of the projects as low as possible.
The results of the organization’s activities as well as the financial standing for this financial
year can be seen in the following profit and loss account and balance sheet.
Goals for 2011
The goals of Sharing Awareness for 2011 is to support and run teacher training programmes
in at least one of the recipient countries with at least 25 participating teachers. Another goal is
to form important partnerships, for instance with teachers’ organizations, publishing houses
and companies within the IT sector in Sweden and abroad who can assist both with financial
means and with knowledge and experience that can be put to use in the projects as well as in
the organization itself.
