2. INTRODUCTION
• The word “Pinda” means bolus. Pinda sweda
refers to the sudation performed by the bolus
of drugs.

5. PATRA PINDA SWEDA
• The sudation given by using the bolus of the patra
(Leaf) is called as Patra potala(Pinda) sweda. Various
Vatahara patra like Agnimantha, Shigru, Chincha,
Dattura, Arka, Nirgundi, Eranda are processed and used
for the purpose of sudation.

7. METHOD OF PREPARATION:
• Grated coconut was slightly fried in an iron
vessel and kept apart. Then fry small pieces of
lemon with 5ml of Eranda thaila. To this, add
small pieces of leaves and fried till it attains a
brownish tinge. Remaining thaila is added to
this preparation. Then fried coconut and
powders are added and mixed well properly
and tied in to Potali.

8. PREPARATION OF THE BOLUSES:
• The prepared medicines are measured and
divided in to 2 equal parts of 300 Gms each and
put in to the pieces of the cotton cloths. The
three corners are folded neatly together so as to
come under the fourth fold. Fourth one is used to
cover the other three corner folds underneath.
Then one end of the thread is held tight with left
hand and other end is tied around the folds. In
short the bolus should be tied in such a way that
the mouth of the sac leaves a tuft at the top of
bundle, for holding it with ease.

9. POORVAKARMA:
• Patient should be asked to sit on the Droni with legs
extended. Abhyanga should be done with the
prescribed oil in the seven positions mentioned below.
• Sitting
• Supine
• Right lateral
• Supine
• Left lateral
• Supine

10. PRADHANA KARMA:
• After the Abhyanga the Patient is asked to sit on the Droni with legs extended.
• Frying pan is kept in mild flame and prescribed oil is poured (10-15 ml on each
time of dipping).
• When the pan gets hot the Patra potalis are dipped in oil and made warm.
• Warm boluses are gently applied in a synchronized manner by two therapists
positioned in each side of the patient.
• The Therapists before applying the bolus on the body of the patient should ensure
that the heat of the boluses is bearable to the patients by touching them to their
own dorsum of the hand.
• Heat of the boluses should be maintained throughout the procedure by dipping it
in the hot oil repeatedly.
• This Process should be performed in all the seven positions that are advised for
Abhyanga.
• The procedure of Patra potala sweda should be done till the attainment of the
samyak swinna lakshana.
• The Pinda should be changed in every 3 days.

11. PRECAUTIONS DURING THE PREPARATION:
• The coconut should not be over roasted or burnt.
• Avoid over frying of the patra.
• Do not use excessive oil in the preparation of the medicine.
• Tie bolus firmly to avoid leakage of the contents during rubbing.
PRECAUTIONS DURING THE PROCEDURE:
• Avoid excessive heating of the bolus in order to prevent rupture.
• Ensure uniformity of the pressure and temperature on all the parts of the
body.
• Boluses should be applied with sufficient warmth.
• The direction of the massage with boluses should always be Anuloma.
• Therapy should be stopped when the Samyak Swinna lakshana are
attained.
• Ideal time for the performance of Patra potala sweda is 7-11 am and 4 – 6
pm.
• The temperature of the bolus while applying on the body should be 45-55
0C.
• Treatment Should be done on observing Jeerna Ahara Lakshana

12. DURATION:
– Preparation time : 10min.
– Procedure time : 40min.
– Bath time : 10min.
COMPLICATION AND MANAGEMENT:
• Rashes are the common complication which can be treated by the
application of Sheeta veerya dravya like shatadhouta, Sahasra
dhouta Gritha, Yashtimadhu thaila, Kumari pulp and Haridra with
Gritha over the affected part.
• Giddiness and fainting can be managed by providing the
Sharkarodaka to the patient for drinking after sprinkling cold water
over the patients face.
PASHCHAT KARMA
• Patient is asked to take Hot Shower after sweat gets subsided (
Body Temperature comes to Normal)
• Apply Rasnadi Churna over the Scalp(Vertex)
• Advise Snehapana Pathya and Apathya.

13. SHASHTIKA SHALI PINDA SWEDA
• Shashtika Shali Pinda Sweda is a type of Brumhana Sweda.
Cooked shashtika shali is used to induce Sweda.

15. PREPARATION OF KIZHI
• Balamoola kashaya is prepared by boiling bala
moolam and water and reducing to 3 litres.
Divide this kashaya into two parts of 1.5 litre
each. In one part of kashaya 750 ml milk is
added along with 300gm of shastika shali rice
and cooked properly. This rice is tied into 2
pottalis.
• The other half part of kashaya is mixed with
750 ml of milk and used as drava dravya
during procedure.

16. PREPARATION OF PATIENT
– Thalam is kept on patient’s vertex followed by
Abhyanga in all the 7 positions as poorvakarma.
PRADHANA KARMA
– The prepared pottali’s are taken and dipped in the
mixture of bala moola kashaya and ksheera which is
simultaneously boiled. This pottali is rubbed and
squeezed mildly on the body of the patient. This is
done in 7 postures(5 Min in each Posture). After the
procedure is completed the Shashtika is scrapped
from the body using coconut leaf and oil is applied
over the body with mild massage.

PRECAUTION:
– During the procedure the rice paste should be frequently
wiped out with hand and should not allow the sale to get
collected beneath the patient’s body so as to prevent the
cold and consequent chills.

soft. Then add the remaining powders one by
one. Divide in to two parts and tie in to
Potaly. Procedure is same as that of Patra
panda Sweda.

23. • PREPARATION:
• 25 ml oil is taken in the pan and add the
pieces of jambeera to it and fry till become
soft. Then cut open the eggs and add to the
pan fry till it becomes cooked. Then add the
remaining powders one by one. Divide in to
two parts and tie in to Potaly. Procedure is
same as that of Patra panda Sweda

24. • RUKSHA SWEDA’S
• Ruksha Churna Pinda, Valuka, Lavana etc are
tied in to pottali and heated in a pan with out
oil and with out abhyanga.
• OTHER SNIGDHA SWEDA’S
• Some of the same above pindas can be heated
in prescribed oil and applied over the patient
after abhyanga.
