Procter and Gamble (P & G) the worlds leading producer of household products, rnarkets over
300 brands to 5 billion people around the world. P & G's products fall under three broad
categories, namely beauty care ; baby and family health care and household care. P & G has 2 of
its worlds leading detergents - Tide and Ariel in India to cater the main concerns of the Indian
households, namely outstanding whiteness and stain removal. P & G's another leading brand,
pamper which is the worlds number one selling diaper brand with sales of U.S $ 6 billion
annually. Pampers provides superior dryness for un interrupted, over night sleep, with just one
pamper diaper. In lndia, pamper's fresh and dry is available in a variety of three sizes - 4s, 10s
and 25s.
In the early 1990's P & G faced a problem of extreme demand variations for this best selling
brand pampers diapers. The logistics executives at P & G examined the order rates for pampers
across the supply chain. Though the purchases rates remained rnore or less steady at the
consumer end, the logistics executives found that the variation of orders increased from the
retailers level to the distributor level up the..supply chain. The effect is lack of supply cahin co-
ordination, subsequently, the manufacturing and inventory cost increased resulting into less
supply chain profi tability.
Questions :
a. What is the problem that P & G was facing in the early 1990 and how will it be countered?

CASE STUDY:
Business Process Reengineering (BPR) Project at Ford Motor Company
The accounts department of Ford Motor Company (Ford) USA, employed 500 people and
represented an opportunity for major improvement. Ford had formed a joint venture with Mazda
of Japan . Mazda had only five employees in accounts payable department. Even after
accounting for the differences in sizes of the two companies, Ford felt'their accounts payable
department was overstaffed and also the payrnents to supplier were delayed. Hence Ford
decided to benchmark the 'Account Payable' process with Mazda and reengineer it radically.
The process that was being used by Ford (old process) involved purchasing department
issuing a purchase order (P.O) to the supplier with a copy to the accounts payable department.
When the goods (materials) were received frorn the supplier, a receiving document - Goods
Received Note (GRN) - was made by the receiving stores and sent to accounts payable. Later
the supplier sent an lnvoice to the Ford Accounts payable department directly for the goods
supplied, for receiving his payment. If account payable department could match the three
document, they could authorize payment to this supplier. As 500 people were processing these
documents, most of the time was spent in resolving the discrepancies or mismatches among
documents. The payment clerk would hold-up payments until the discrepancy was identified
and problem solved. This led to high level of supplier - dissatisfactiotr, A survey revealed that
as against Mazda's supplier satisfaction level of 95oh, Ford's level was only 55%. Ford re-
engineered the system using Information Technology. The purchase department generated an
electronic P.O. using Electronic Data Interchange (EDI). Thus there was no need to send copies
to anyone, as they were transmitted electronically. When the goods arrived, the receiving clerk
would enter the data in this computer database and determine whether this shipment agreed with
the electronic P.O. If it did, payment was authorized to be made at the appropriate time. If it did
not match, the goods would be returned or purchasing department would be notified to give
okay note to receive the material. Thus the discrepancy could be sorted immediately, without
delay. Ford also instituted "invoiceless purchasing" where the supplier did not need to send an
invoice to be paid. The payment would be released based on the GRN generated.
. Thus the payment process was simplified for all concerned, eliminating much of paper
work. Ford was able to manage the re-engineered process with only 125 people (reduction of
ffiff by 7 5%). A subsequent supplier satisfaction level measurement indicated 85% and Ford
aimed to improve it further.
Questions :
a. Explain the reason why Ford took - up this project fbr Business process Re-engineering.
(05 Marks)
b. Explain the parameters used by Ford for bench marking and the actual values. What is this
type of bench marking classified as? (05 Marks)
c. Explain the salient differences between the old and reengineered methods. (05 Marks)

implementing the re-engineered process? (05 Marks)

PR{T HYDER.ABAD ASBESTOS COMPANY
The progress and success of any company depends on team work at all ievels, particularly
between the managernenl. and the employees. And the fbstering of team spirit, to a large extent
depends on the quaiity and quantity of cornmunication, downward, upward and horizontal. Well
managecl ccmmunication system of a company makes employees f,eel more secure, confident,
more interested in their work, and loyalty to the company. With the rapid development of the
industrial township of Faridabad,, industries cropped up and hired a workforce, which hailed
from surrounding rural areas. One such plant was Hyderabad Asbestos manufacturing asbestos
sheets. Tkris brought along a chalienge of inducting the employees into the new life style of the
industralised society. Interestingly, enough, such employees lived two lives, one in their
centuries old village and the other in the industry. One was rural and the other was urbanized life
style. So they found themselves maladjusted posing a serious discipline, productivity and quality
problem. The enfbrcernent of industrial discipline posed serious problems as enforcement
generated militancy. The vested political interests outside the factory played their own malicious
roles to mislead the work f,orce.
The rural life style hung heavily an industrial production. The marriage and harvesting season
took toil of production by unscheduled absentecism mounting to 35 percent on certain days.
House keeping and vandalism anci typical careiess habits of a villager heavily pushed waste
figures of the material beyond tolerance. Unions took law in their hands, shouted proactive
slogans inside and outside the plant, and one day a few miscreants attacked some managers. The
unions slapped an illegal strike and the management had no option but to clamp down a lock-
out.
Thanks to the company's faith in the commuilication system and the need to step up the effort
before, during and after the industrial unrest, the steps taken by PR in that direction, stood in
good stead. Management held regular meetings to update the supervisors so that they could
expiain issues to the employees, sent frequent news bulletins to the workers to save the
employees from getting misied by undesirable elements.
When after the lock-out employees lvent away to their viliages and were not approachable, the
company printed some tr0,000 leaflets and drstributed in the villages, in the 30 miles radius,
through a mobile van to buiid public opinion. In the meantimes, some notorious anti-social
elements incited the workforce, who indulged in vandalism and caused considerable damage to
the property. The authorities had to intervene to restore order.
To explain, a junibo sized poster was piastered un the vantage points like markets, panchayats,
etc. in the miiddle of nights fearing hostility, and to make the message reach to the people.
The government conciliation agency brought the management and the unions to the table to
resok',matters and the factory opened again after three weeks. The plant director addressed a

Nokia N8 in Social Media
Amidst several other rnobile handset launches, it was observed that when it came to
handsets, most campaigns were centric to the form factor and social networking apps. The idea
was to cultivate rnobile photography as a proposition amongst travel, photo enthusiasts, young
explorers and position Nokia N8 as the choice. It did not aim to just establish N8 as an
aiternative, but tire device for picture taking. Aim was to build anticipation and tempt active
picture takers, heavy ftricker users and travel enthusiasts to explore the N8 for mobile
photography and videos. Generate positive word of mouth and referrals for the N8 as an imaging
device.
The idea was to have explorers (mobile. travel, photo bloggers) divided in multiple groups out
on a fun field trip in three cities. Their task lvas to capture the essence of ther city using the N8,
by clicking pictures, capturing viCeos and share them, planned in 3 cities Bangalore, Mumbai,
Dellii" The teams were split based on each city. They were asked to explore city and click
pictures based on the theme and twitpic and upload on twitter. The teams with mcst number of
Twitpics and Retweets were to be named winners. Campaign generated good response as an out
of box idea, platform to explore photography skills. Nokia N8 Mystery tour was conceptualized,
wherein some of leading bloggers was sent to a mystery location. 3 bloggers from difierent
Comains with vast foliowing on twitter were selected to undertake this activity. Bloggers
credited the picture taken using N8, talked about their experience. The campaign generatedbuzz
ancl the same was shared with several rnarkets globally by Nokia. 7000 * Tweets, 1000 +
Retweets, 2000 tv-ritpics were the result. Winner each day was selected on the basis of correct
and consistent answers to clues left by explorer. Responses were generated from consumers who
have appreciated the Nokia N8's picture and video quality uploaded by explorers. Over 10000
conversations were generated on N8 and its features as a camera device. The Nokia N8
generated over 8000 refbrrals fu'om bloggers and consumers as a result of the campaigns.

A Malaysian Electronics company promoted its HR manager, who is also South Korean and

commitment and seriousness in rendering his responsibilities in his earlier jobs. The company
employed an Indian expatriate - a master degree holder in HRM as the head of HR department
and a Fiji national - who did his mater's pregram in political science and a senior executive of a
profbssionai human resource association as assistant HR manager. These three executives used
to share their experiences and knorvledge in HRM in formulating HRM policies, crafting HR,
organizational strategies as weil as FIR practices of the company.
The assistant FIR manager brought vibrant policies in designing HR strategies in his area of
operations of compensation management and earned credit for his performance from CEO of the
company. Having earned the credit of the superior, the asst. HR rnanager, acquired the
workplace cultures of an average Malaysian company like moonlighting, flexible work
schedules, flexi timiirgs and work programs that affect the work performance of the employee
as well as the supply chain and the organizational performance adversely.
The head of I{R. department and CEO were aware of the developments leading to the shifts in
the work behavior of the Asst. HR manager and consequently its adverse affects on the delivery
of output to the internal custorners,, work schedules and ultimately performance of the empioyees
and the department as a whole. Ftrowever they were tolerating the behavior of the Asst. HR
manager and havc given the benefit of doubt in fbvour.
Ultimately, the level of irregularity cropped up leading to a noticeable event. The CEO
informally told the Asst. HR manager to meet hirn to discuss the problern and settle the issue.
The Asst. HR Manager paid a deaf ear and resorted to an unexpected and undesirable
behavioural situation, resulting in a three dimensional whistle blowing in the company.
Questions :
Is it cultural variations consequent of the different nationalities of the three executives
resulted in an undesirable situation? (05 Marks)
ls it the workplace culture that resuited in an undesirable situation, despite the fact that all
the three executives are from HR background? (05 Marks)

The logistics executives at P & G examined the order rates for pampers across the supply chain. Though the purchases rates remained rnore or less steady at the consumer end, the logistics executives found that the variation of orders increased from the retailers level to the distributor level up the..supply chain. Ford had formed a joint venture with Mazda of Japan . Mazda had only five employees in accounts payable department. Even after accounting for the differences in sizes of the two companies, Ford felt'their accounts payable department was overstaffed and also the payrnents to supplier were delayed. Hence Ford decided to benchmark the 'Account Payable' process with Mazda and reengineer it radically. The process that was being used by Ford (old process) involved purchasing department issuing a purchase order (P.O) to the supplier with a copy to the accounts payable department. When the goods (materials) were received frorn the supplier, a receiving document - Goods Received Note (GRN) - was made by the receiving stores and sent to accounts payable. Later the supplier sent an lnvoice to the Ford Accounts payable department directly for the goods supplied, for receiving his payment. If account payable department could match the three document, they could authorize payment to this supplier. As 500 people were processing these documents, most of the time was spent in resolving the discrepancies or mismatches among documents. The payment clerk would hold-up payments until the discrepancy was identified and problem solved. This led to high level of supplier - dissatisfactiotr, A survey revealed that as against Mazda's supplier satisfaction level of 95oh, Ford's level was only 55%. Ford re- engineered the system using Information Technology. The purchase department generated an electronic P.O. using Electronic Data Interchange (EDI). Thus there was no need to send copies to anyone, as they were transmitted electronically. When the goods arrived, the receiving clerk would enter the data in this computer database and determine whether this shipment agreed with the electronic P.O. If it did, payment was authorized to be made at the appropriate time. If it did not match, the goods would be returned or purchasing department would be notified to give okay note to receive the material. Thus the discrepancy could be sorted immediately, without delay. Ford also instituted "invoiceless purchasing" where the supplier did not need to send an invoice to be paid. The payment would be released based on the GRN generated. . Thus the payment process was simplified for all concerned, eliminating much of paper work. Ford was able to manage the re-engineered process with only 125 people (reduction of ffiff by 7 5%). A subsequent supplier satisfaction level measurement indicated 85% and Ford aimed to improve it further. Questions : a. • 12. l4MBAHR4O7 spcTro-N - p CASE ST'UDY - [ Compulsory I PR{T HYDER.ABAD ASBESTOS COMPANY The progress and success of any company depends on team work at all ievels, particularly between the managernenl. and the employees. And the fbstering of team spirit, to a large extent depends on the quaiity and quantity of cornmunication, downward, upward and horizontal. Well managecl ccmmunication system of a company makes employees f,eel more secure, confident, more interested in their work, and loyalty to the company. With the rapid development of the industrial township of Faridabad,, industries cropped up and hired a workforce, which hailed from surrounding rural areas. One such plant was Hyderabad Asbestos manufacturing asbestos sheets. Tkris brought along a chalienge of inducting the employees into the new life style of the industralised society. Interestingly, enough, such employees lived two lives, one in their centuries old village and the other in the industry. One was rural and the other was urbanized life style. So they found themselves maladjusted posing a serious discipline, productivity and quality problem. The enfbrcernent of industrial discipline posed serious problems as enforcement generated militancy. The vested political interests outside the factory played their own malicious roles to mislead the work f,orce. The rural life style hung heavily an industrial production. The marriage and harvesting season took toil of production by unscheduled absentecism mounting to 35 percent on certain days. House keeping and vandalism anci typical careiess habits of a villager heavily pushed waste figures of the material beyond tolerance. Unions took law in their hands, shouted proactive slogans inside and outside the plant, and one day a few miscreants attacked some managers. The unions slapped an illegal strike and the management had no option but to clamp down a lock- out. Thanks to the company's faith in the commuilication system and the need to step up the effort before, during and after the industrial unrest, the steps taken by PR in that direction, stood in good stead. Management held regular meetings to update the supervisors so that they could expiain issues to the employees, sent frequent news bulletins to the workers to save the employees from getting misied by undesirable elements. When after the lock-out employees lvent away to their viliages and were not approachable, the company printed some tr0,000 leaflets and drstributed in the villages, in the 30 miles radius, through a mobile van to buiid public opinion. In the meantimes, some notorious anti-social elements incited the workforce, who indulged in vandalism and caused considerable damage to the property. The authorities had to intervene to restore order. To explain, a junibo sized poster was piastered un the vantage points like markets, panchayats, etc. in the miiddle of nights fearing hostility, and to make the message reach to the people. The government conciliation agency brought the management and the unions to the table to resok',matters and the factory opened again after three weeks. The plant director addressed a general assembly of the employees to restore trust and confidence. Public relations played a vital role in preparing the speech and providing the logistics support. To reinforce the public cpinion the company officials visited several 'Sar Panchs' to explain their view point to get their support. Goodwill thus earned, made an assembly of village heads to invite the plant director to hoist the national flag o{} independence duy, rvtrrich was round the corner. Public relations was all involved in contract work, and the networking carried out in the past paid dividends. Public relations, who had been in touch with the local press, provided enough information to the journalists, who rvrote some favourable articles appreciating the efforts made by the company to restore industrial peace. 1 What are the reasons for inclustrial rest at it . company? 2.
