Digipak – used, developed and challenged conventions
1. Digipak – Used, developed and
challenged conventions of a real
media product
2. Used: I used the idea of having
my artist make direct mode of
address with the audience
through the use of an eye level
shot. The reason I did this is
because I think this is an
effective way of enticing the
audience to my digipak. The eye
contact helps the audience to
be drawn towards the front
cover.
Challenged: I used inspiration from Ellie Goulding as she is a successful yet unique pop
artist. However, on her front cover she used a close up shot of her face. I chose to use a
mid shot of my artist in order to challenge this concept as I wanted to portray the art pop
twist through action shots.
Developed: Within my research I referred a lot to Ellie Goulding as I felt she was similar to my
artist and genre. She had used her name and album name on her album cover therefore I
wanted to follow this as I felt it was important for my audience to know what the album was
and who it is by. However, on her cover she used the same text in the same colour although
she did change the font size however, I felt I wanted to develop this idea. To develop this idea
I decided that I was going to use a different font and a different colour for the artist name and
album name so that my artist name like on hers was a lot bigger but the different colour font
and text would allow this to stand out more.
3. Challenged: I challenged the style of
layout for my CD. Instead of creating
a standard CD I decided to create a
vinyl looking CD in order to fit in
with my art pop theme. I also liked
this concept as it was completely
different and would be extremely
eye catching making it work well as
the audience wouldn’t have seen
this concept used before.
4. DEVELOPED: When researching into digipaks I noticed that a lot of artists liked to use
shapes in their design. I quite liked this concept particularly when I saw Tinie Tempah’s
back cover (above). However, I wanted to developed this idea as I felt that the use of
the optical illusions look triangle background took attention away from the track list
which is a key part of the digipak. Therefore, I decided that I would put my track list
with my triangle in order to highlight that the track list is important.
