At the Tech For Good Meetup in London Marcos Mendendez introduced us to The Good Data, which is a service that helps you to take ownership of your personal data online by blocking browsing data that would otherwise be used by third party trackers. Then, with your consent, it puts some of your data to use for organisations that are working towards a good cause. What’s really cool, is that you can also choose to become an owner of The Good Data - so it’s possibly the first data coop in the world.
2. “The data we create
about ourselves
should be owned by
each of us, not by the
large companies that
harvest it”,
Sir Tim Berners-Lee
3. The first right of men is the right
to labor and to enjoy the outcome
of it.
Data is the labour of the new
economy. A new factor of
production that emanates from us
and we must posses. If we don’t
want to become data slaves.
4. Your identity may be stolen
Your data may be generating wealth for others
Your data may be used against you
Your choices will be driven by your data
Either you end up ruling your data, or data will rule your life.
5. Let us -Customers-collaborate
to talk to
companies on an equal
footing and to act as real
owners of our data.

7. First step, build a co-op that makes
browsing data work for a good cause
By installing a browser extension
you will block data threats
that track you online

Part of that data will be anonymously
traded with your permission
and used to alleviate poverty .

8. Future evolution
will be as ambitious as we want it to be
● TheGoodData will gradually seek data
ownership in most relevant aspects of
Customers’ life
● In order to do so, TheGoodData fosters
external collaboration
○ Code and data will be open
○ A share of future revenues will be
reserved for collaborators

This presentation is about the first customer data cooperative, TheGoodData
An venture built to help users enjoy the ownership of their data
Data is created by us and therefore should be owned by us, as well.
It is not just about privacy, it is about something primal to it, which is ownership.
Only if we remain owners of our data we are sovereigns to decide wether to keep it private, share it or trede it
Saving distances, if we step back, something similar happened with labour at the time of sclavism
Data is a factor of production of the new economy and should be owned by us if we want to preserve our welfare and freedom
There may be no big reason to worry today, water is still mild. From time to time there are some data leaks. Nothing serious because companies valuations are not impacted by them (ebay, Target, etc).
Water may be getting warmer as we start co-creating companies with tremendous valuations without seeing any cut out of them (facebook, whatsapp, etc)
We may start getting a bit aslept by the time when we’ve been rejected of insurance or a loan based on our data, on our friends data, or on the data of people similar to us.
We may end up being a dish of frog legs by the time when most of our decisions are filtered by our data. The offers we receive, the books we buy, the places we visit, the political news we read, the people that we get to know in social networks or dating sites, the jobs that are being offered, etc All of them may be biased, limited by our data.
This is what is called filter bubble. And it ends up when we end up doing what companies algorithms decide what should we do
The only way to win back data ownership is about the approach
The only way to achieve an ambitious goal as this one is with openness and collaboration
This collaboration can make people/Customers stay on an equal footing in front of companies that, otherwise would be in a dominant position
This power of crowds should help us earn back data ownership, that means:
being aware of data created: data browsing, location, etc
being in control of it: deciding who should have access to it and under what circumstances (linked data,...)
being able to agree fair terms with companies (it should not be a matter of take it or leave it propositions like facebook or google do) in an easy customer-centric way (creative commons of data)
Like with earth production factors, data cooperatives are owned by their producers. Instead of ranchers that own the cooperative in exchange of bringing their milk, users become the only owners of the company by handing out their data to the cooperative
Each of the Members become then a company owner with the right, among others, to vote in General Meetings
Being a cooperative, the company cannot be sold and data either (asset lock clause)
The cooperative takes the responsibility of tasks that cannot be done by users, either by complexity, lack of time or unbalance relationship with companies
First objective has been to set up a legal structure and a basic prototype that helps users browse more safely making their data work for a good cause
Once first goal has been achieved, there are thousands of ways to improve ownership over our data
In order to address those goals, TheGoodData has build an open ecosystem where contributors will be rewarded if they want to build new functionality over existing code and data
Now there are three ways you can help us.
Without the participation of all of us we will lose ownership of our data.
Let’s react!
