LESSON TITLE: Map reading TIME ALLOTTED: Two hours
LESSON DESCRIPTION:
Students are taught how to use a real compass. Skills on finding directions and bearing, identifying landforms
through contour lines are also introduced to the class. Using the new skills that they have learnt, students move on
to explore an interactive and digital media – Voyage to the Age of Dinosaurs (VAD). Through VAD, the students a re
supposed to find dinosaurs and fossils using the navigation tools. Through this game, students will see the relevance
of learning and applying map reading skills in the real world.
CLASSROOM LAYOUT AND GROUPING OF STUDENTS:
- Students are divided into 8 groups with 5 students in each group. Group work is done regularly and students are
familiar with group discussion. Each group will explore the use of a compass and at the same time acquiring skills
such as finding direction and bearings. Next, students will try the navigation game VAD.
- Computer labs with 40 computers that are grouped into cluster are needed. Each group will be sitting in clusters
and engaged in VAD as they navigate in the virtual world. Group discussion is ongoing as they help each other to
venture into VAD.

Students are given instructional worksheet on the use of the different icons and navigating tools in the interactive
and digital media – Voyage to the Age of Dinosaurs (VAD) before they venture into the virtual world.

INSTRUCTIONAL PROCEDURES:
1. Motivation:
Through this game VAD, students will see the relevance of learning and applying map reading skills in the
real world.
2. Activities:
Students are taught how to use a real compass. Skills on finding directions and bearing, identifying landforms
through contour lines are also introduced to the class through a guiding worksheet. Using the new skills that
they have learnt, students move on to explore an interactive and digital media – Voyage to the Age of
Dinosaurs (VAD). Through VAD, the students are supposed to find dinosaurs and fossils using the navigation
tools. Through this game, students will see the relevance of learning and applying map reading skills in the
real world.
3. Closure:
Students are given map reading exercise worksheet to practice what they have learnt through VAD.
ASSESSMENT AND EVALUATION:
Map reading test is conducted at the end of the topic to test students’ understanding of the concepts.
