In the 21st century, many people believe that we have overcome the obstacle of gender inequality
and evolved into a society of fairness and righteousness. As many know, females can be just as
proficient and qualified as males at any task. Though some efforts to off–set this gender imbalance is
in place, it is still commonly acknowledged that many careers are stated to be a male job such as

This negative trend demonstrates that many females have slowly adapted to the stereotypes of the
society and accepted their assigned roles in the labour force and in their family unintentionally.
Conventionally, females played a very insignificant role in the paid work force of a society as
many times they were expected to be home taking care of their family. Their roles at home can
often include grocery shopping, meeting all the needs of her children and husband. As time moved
on, our society became more accepted of sharing housework between the couples, but even so, the
traditionally more feminine housework such as cooking, caring for sick children, and shopping for
the entire family are mostly done by the females of the house. It is argued in a research journal
Work and Occupations (Witkowski & Leicht, 1995) that in an average North American family,
females take on roughly three–quarters of the housework. Even though we are in a democratic
society, parenting roles in the household are assigned based on gender rather than in a democratic

associated with the female gender, their career paths are eventually affected for the worse.

Gender inequality remains a serious issue and is entity in every single given society.
Yet, even with a general consensus that women should be on a equal level with men, many countries
around the world still see gender inequalities perpetuate in their country. It is seen through
households, occupation, products, commercials, etc. Gender inequality is not actually gender
differences but the behaviors that arise as a result of the different position men and women employ
(Conley 2017). It is us humans who create this inequality it is our responsibility to fix it. By
providing a way to solve this problem we can turn to sociology and use tools to provide us some
solutions. Without sociological foundations one cannot comprehend the world, like the creation of

country. First and foremost, sociology in simple terms is the systematic study of society through
social interactions, culture and institutions. All three of these is what our society is built and
established upon. Institutions are establish order comprising rule bound and standard large group

social categories and concepts we recognize in addition to our beliefs, behaviors, and practices

Gender Equity
Are male students and female student's receiving the same opportunities when it comes to Math
and Science in the schools? I don't believe they are. This is why gender equity is a major problem
facing our schools today. Many girls are having very negative attitudes towards Math and Science.
Through doing research on this topic I found out why.

was written. I learned that children as young as kindergarten already have formed set stereotypes

He also seemed to talk down to the girls. My self–esteem in Math wasn't good going into this course
and when I came out of it, it only became worse. I was terrified of
Math. I don't think my Math teacher or other teachers intentionally call on boys and encourage them
more but it ends up happening anyway. Another problem that girls are faced with is they aren't
getting the same opportunities and encouragement that boys receive in lab experiments. All of these
things play a big factor in girls having low self–esteem when it comes to Math and Science.
When doing my research on gender equity, I found a lot of good steps taken to improve the
equality of boys and girls in school. One of the first things that needs to be done is a teacher
assessment. The article Fair and Square, says that the teacher should have a friend or colleague
come into the class to do the assessment. The observer would write a 'b' if the teacher asked a boy
the question and a 'g' if the teacher asked the girl the question. The observer would also "make a
brief notation of the type of reaction you make to each child, whether it's praise, criticism,
remediation, or acceptance"(Sadker , Sadker ,
Stulberg, 2001 ). I think this assessment is a good idea. However, I would think if the teacher knew

meaning that a certain class, gender, and race gets an overwhelming amount of opportunities than
those of the opposite group. We have all been affected by these types of inequality in one way or

I know for a fact that my race has limited my life opportunities due to discrimination. I remember
when I was first applying for jobs I applied in a department store in my local mall along with my
friend who just so happened to be white. We had known that this place was hiring because it was
around the seasonal time. This application did not require a resume just a basic information
resume where our ethnicity was asked. We submitted our application at the same time and within
two days my friend got a call to set up an interview. I was excited because I was expecting the
same call which unfortunately never came. Another friend of mine who also happens to be white
submitted her application a week after I did and she got a call back next time. Fair to say I was
appalled. That experience had such a negative impact on me that I did not want to submit a job
application ever again. I knew I was very much capable of having a job because I was always taught

While participating in the student led units, I was able to see how large the wage gap for
different genders is. I expected, due to the gender hierarchy, that women would make less than
men, however, I never expected the wage gap to be as large as it was. This issues has stuck with
me since the student led units because this issue is bringing America down the wrong path.
America is supposed to be the land of opportunity, not the land of oppression. Like we said in

working for different pharmaceutical companies handling their FDA submission. When my aunt
was applying for a new job, she was talking to one of her friends who was applying for the same

was offered, however, I do know that her offer was significantly less than his offer. My aunt decided

Lorber focuses on the biological differences between male and female. She goes into detail about
how women are separated or treated differently from men just because of a biological difference.
In comparison, Tannen discusses the behavior and language of males and females in a classroom
setting, discussing how males take on different types of questions and public speaking differently
than females. She discusses how males and females learn to participate in different ways. Between
the two authors, there is one point that serves for the basis of my argument and that would be the
inequality that both genders face due to these gender boundaries. For example, in Lorber's essay,
she formulates a issues called the Bathroom Problem. This is a perfect example of how society tries
to make both sexes equal when in reality, they are not. In this Bathroom Problem, we give both
males and females the same amount of bathroom facilities. But as Lorber states on page 732,
"[A]lthough an equal number of bathrooms seems fair, equality would mean more women's
bathrooms or allowing women to use men's bathrooms for a certain amount of time." (732). If you
want both sexes to be equal, then help both sexes out by giving them the supplies or facilities that

In world history, gender inequality and women's and empowerment have been an ongoing battle
of victories and setbacks, especially for women. Women are disproportionately affected by
gender inequality; they are often looked at with pity or a need to be protected from the outside

Freedom and equality are ideas this country has had for centuries that have evolved over time. In
1776, what Thomas Jefferson meant by "all men are created equal", is that white males are
dominant in society. Women are treated worse than men and slaves treated worse than women.

As I said before, I believe inequality, power, and oppression share a connection with each other.
However, I would say I feel more of a connection with inequality and oppression because it has
impacted my life beyond just being a women. I would define inequality has an unequal distribution
of rights in the form of discrimination. Because telling me I can't do something because I'm a girl is
discriminating against my gender. In the same way, I believe that oppression means the power of
control mentally and emotionally. If you're always going to tell me this is right and this is wrong,
I wouldn't be able to have my own beliefs because it's been decided for me. I want to about inequality
because I feel like people take the idea of gender inequality has a light topic, that all they think
about is the wage gap when it's more than that. Its about women being prevented from doing
things just because of their appearance for into apparent reason. For example, in the culture that
I'm being raised in women are not allowed to have male friends, it is frown upon. It's taken so
seriously that all my cousins did was go out with a boy to study that her Dad made her drop out
of school and get married to a thirty year old. Such brutal consequences for a minor thing. And
there's no reason why, the only reason is just because you're a girl. I'll give you another example,
I'm a very outgoing person, so I received a lot of invites to social events, but I never once went to
any of them because I wasn't allowed to. My brother was allowed to go to friends' houses and
have sleepovers, but I wasn't because girls don't do that or I'll get hurt from my friends brother. It
sucks because I lost a lot of friends and they weren't very understanding about it, I can renumber
my Mom screaming at my friends on the phone because she wouldn't let me attend a birthday

Gender inequality is a topic that has manifested the news in the recent years. Stories of women
being sexually harassed, the expanding wage gap, and women fighting for their rights is a topic that
has no problem making the news every night. As both gender can experience gender inequality,
women often are the oppressed gender in society. As a society, Americans have failed to minimize the
amount of inequality that takes place in everyday interactions. How many times as a woman heard,
"That is a man's job. You should not be doing that," in life decisions or tasks. Americans should
combat gender inequality because it hurts both genders. Women lack political and economic
power, experience more sexual harassment and workplace discrimination, and are susceptible to
gender roles and stereotypes. Women lack the same political and economic power as men do.
Almost all political leaders are male, and are left to make decisions about feminine issues. Males
should not be left to chose a female's right to birth control, abortion, or child care questions. These
are issues that solely involve a female's body, and men do not know the needs of a female body.

claimed that because she was a female meant she did not have the credentials for leading the

In a society that preaches equality it is expected for equality to show in its culture and way of life.
In America, despite claiming to be an equal nation, many aspects of inequality, including racial,
economic, and gender inequality, can be seen. Like all types of inequality and stereotypes, the
socialization process begins from infancy. Most people strive to teach equality but according to
Introduction to Sociology, "Even when parents set gender equality as a goal, there may be
underlying indications of inequality. For example, boys may be asked to take out the garbage and
perform other tasks that require strength or toughness, while girls may be asked to fold laundry or
perform duties that require neatness and care." From things as small as this stem gender inequality.
As this is true, in individual households, it exists in the country itself. Men and women are
advertised as equals but the truth is that America's attempt at an egalitarian society has yet to be
achieved on a gender scale. This is the purpose for this assignment: to see if people are aware of the
truth about gender inequality in this society or if they are blind to this fact and believe that complete
exists within the country.
