Transcendental Meditation (T. M.): The industrialized Western nations exported to the East their brand of materialism and consumerism, where a car, refrigerator, radio or T.V. were status symbols. The East contributed Buddhism, mysticism and Maharshi Mahesh Yogi's T.M. It has spread like wild fire to the West. The developing countries export their raw materials to the West. The finished and manufactured product from the same, is sent back to us. Similarly, it was the West, which imported the raw T.M. from us and with their own research and development made it into a finished product, which we now use in all the developing countries. It has millions of disciples all over the world who claim that they feel more relaxed, not so jittery and tense, more happy and less worried. To achieve this sublime consciousness, it is necessary to sit in a quiet comer and meditate for about 20 minutes, twice a day, while repeating a mantra – a short phrase. Numerous experiments have shown that the physiological effects of T.M. on the heart, lungs, metabolism, blood lactate and breathing are exactly opposite to those produced by sympathetic stimulation due to the demands of stress. In other words, T.M., is anti-stress in its effect.
