2. Keep your grades up.
Don’t stop!
College admissions officials will review your
grade-point average from 9th–11th
grades.
3. Select your courses carefully.
College admission requirements usually
include a specific number of college-
preparatory courses. Make sure that the
courses you are taking have high
academic content and include English, a

• When you take the tests, be sure the
testing agency sends the scores directly to
the schools that interest you.
• Remember that if you are not satisfied
with your scores, you can take the test
again.
• If you are in the running for academic
scholarships, remember that higher test
scores many times mean more money!
5. Look at different schools.
• Private
• Public
• Big, medium, small
• HBCU
• Technical
6.
7. Things to know and ask when
talking with admissions:
• What is my class rank?
• What is my GPA?
• What are my SAT/ACT scores?
• Do I have Life or Palmetto yet?
• What type of classes have I been taking?
• How many credits of foreign language do I
need for admission to your college?
• What % of your students receive a
bachelor’s degree at the end of 4 years?
8. Establish an e-mail account for college
admissions purposes and check it
frequently.
9. Compare and contrast the schools
that you are visiting.
• What size campus do I feel comfortable with?
• Where can we afford?
• For the money, where is the best buy?
• Which colleges are “reach”, “fit”, and “give me?”
• Does my favorite school even offer my major or
degree that I am interested in?
• May I drive and park on campus?
• Where is the college located?
10. Have YOU visited the school with your
child?
Do YOU feel good (as best as can be)
about where you are sending your child?
11.
12. Narrow your search.
After you’ve researched the different schools that you’re
interested in, narrow your choices to three to five
potential choices.
Remember SAT Prep:
reach, fit, give me
