• Tycho was born in Denmark,
in 1546.
• When Tycho was young he
was kidnapped by his uncle.
• He was one of ten kids.
               • Tycho had his Tyge Ottesen Brahe
                                         Tycho Brahe

own island and he lived on it for close
               to 20 years.
               • He died in the year of 1601 from
                  mercury poisoning.

     University of Copenhagen.
• Uncle sent him to the University of Leipzig when he was 16.
• He studied at the University until he was 18 years old.
• At age 17 made his first recorded observation.
• Between 1565-1570 Tycho travelled throughout Europe.
• Studied at Wittenberg, Rostock, Basel and Augsburg.
• Tycho had a pet tame moose.
                        • The moose had been sent to
                          entertain people.
• One day, it was intoxicated with beer.
• The moose fell down the stairs and broke its leg.
• He then later died even with the best possible care for it.
• Made the most precise observations that had
  ever been made.
• Johannes Kepler was Brahe’s assistant.
• He provided major data for later
  astronomers.
• For example, he and Kepler created our
current model of the solar system.
• He lived and worked on the island of Hven.
Tycho Brahe Studied in a lot of fields such as:

- Law
- Astronomy
- Mechanic
- Cartography
- Astrology
- Alchemy
- Pharmacology

Tycho was ‘kidnapped’ by his rich uncle
Tycho Brahe was a great scientist. His
work is still being used and studied today, even though he died
more than four hundred years ago. He was an astronomer and so
much more, and did so much for science and the Scientific
Revolution. Although the last of his line, his grandson, Otto Tyge,
died in 1662, his work and his impact on history, lives on.

Notas del editor

  1. Tycho Brahe was born on December fourteenth, 1546. He was born in the town of Scania, a town that, at that time, was part of Denmark but now is part of Sweden. Tycho was born Tyge Ottesen (Ottay sun) Brahe, named after his father who was a very important person in the court of the Danish king, but then in later years he changed his name to a Latinized name of Tycho Brahe. Tycho was one of ten kids, but his twin brother died at birth and his sister died at the young age of thirteen.  When Brahe was a young child, he was “abducted” by his uncle. Tycho was given an island by King Fredrick the second from Denmark, and then lived on it for twenty years. He had eight kids, but only six of them lived to adulthood. Tycho died on October 24, 1601 at the age of 54, from what was thought to be a bladder or kidney ailment but some recent investigations show that he might have died of mercury poisoning due to the high levels of mercury found in his moustache hairs.
  2. When he was only 12, in April 1559, Tycho began studies at the University of Copenhagen. Later, in 1562 when he was sixteen years old, Tycho’s uncle sent him to the University of Leipzip to continue his study law. He studied at this University until he was 18 years old. Tycho at age 17 made his first recorded observation, overlapping of the planet of Jupiter and Saturn. That was when Tycho left law and began studying astronomy. Then, in 1565-1570, Tycho travelled throughout Europe. He studied at Wittenberg which was in the town of Martin Luther’s campaign against the Roman Catholic Church, the University of Rostock, the University of Basel in Switzerland and the city of Augsburg.
  3. Tycho was rumored to have had a tame moose, which “followed him like a dog”. The moose had been sent to the castle of Landskrona, near a city close to Hven, to humor a nobleman there. Another scientist wrote Tycho a letter, asking if there was an animal faster than a deer that he could use for his studies. Tycho replied saying there was none, but that he could send his pet moose. After the scientist replied again saying he would be happy to take the moose, Tycho informed him that his moose had actually just died. The incident had happened that night during dinner. The moose had walked up the castle stairs and then proceeded to drink beer until he was extremely intoxicated. It had then fallen down the stairs, and broken a leg. Although it had the best care possible, the moose had died shortly afterwards.
  4. Tycho Brahe was a man of many talents. He began studying law, on the urging of his uncle, and switched from that to astronomy in later years. However, he was, throughout his entire career, many other things than an astronomer. He was a mechanic, cartographer, astrologer, alchemist and a pharmacologist.
