The Oregon Trail
Analyze Learner
The students for whom this lesson is
intended are 5th graders enrolled in a
specialized school for the deaf and hearing
impaired. There are 12 students (the maximum
allowed without a teacher’s aid): seven males
and five females.
Main Objectives
The students will understand the journey of the
Oregon Trail through discussion, analyzing old newspapers,
reading a novel, creating an edible covered wagon, drawing
maps, and making “pioneer” recipes with 85% accuracy.
Day-By-Day
▪ Monday: Read and discuss e-textbook chapter on The Oregon Trail. Group students into
“families”. Research online newspaper archives and decide path. Hw: Watch Monday’s video
and blog about 10 statements and their interpretations.
▪ Tuesday: Begin “Dear America” book. Create a budget /supplies activity on Microsoft Excel.
Hw: Identify five mechanics of the covered wagon and upload a visual of these mechanics to
Wikispaces in anatomical order.
▪ Wednesday: Make a covered wagon using gummy bears, twizzlers, graham crackers, etc.
Upload creations to slideshare as a class slideshow for parent night. Hw: Identify three major
locations along the Oregon Trail and provide four facts about each location; make a
verbal/sign language YouTube video using the information.
▪ Thursday: Draw Oregon Trail maps. Upload maps to Blendspace for parent night. Hw: Make a
“pioneer” recipe.
▪ Friday: “Welcome to Oregon” party. Pioneer recipes brought to class. Play The Oregon Trail
video game.
▪ Daily: Oregon Trail/Pioneer blogging.

▪ PowerPoint – Visual Instructions.
▪ iPad: E-book version of the Social Studies textbook.
▪ Google Archives/Time’s Machine (The New York
Times- Newspaper research.
▪ Video/Blogspace: Monday night’s homework/daily
pioneer blogging.
▪ Microsoft Excel: Budgeting/supplies activity.
▪ Wikispace: Tuesday night’s homework.
▪ Slideshare: Class slideshow of edible covered wagons.
▪ YouTube: Wednesday night’s homework.
▪ Blendspace: Oregon trail maps.

The Oregon Trail -Final Version

  • 2. Analyze Learner The students for whom this lesson is intended are 5th graders enrolled in a specialized school for the deaf and hearing impaired. There are 12 students (the maximum allowed without a teacher’s aid): seven males and five females.
  • 3. Main Objectives The students will understand the journey of the Oregon Trail through discussion, analyzing old newspapers, reading a novel, creating an edible covered wagon, drawing maps, and making “pioneer” recipes with 85% accuracy.
  • 4. Day-By-Day ▪ Monday: Read and discuss e-textbook chapter on The Oregon Trail. Group students into “families”. Research online newspaper archives and decide path. Hw: Watch Monday’s video and blog about 10 statements and their interpretations. ▪ Tuesday: Begin “Dear America” book. Create a budget /supplies activity on Microsoft Excel. Hw: Identify five mechanics of the covered wagon and upload a visual of these mechanics to Wikispaces in anatomical order. ▪ Wednesday: Make a covered wagon using gummy bears, twizzlers, graham crackers, etc. Upload creations to slideshare as a class slideshow for parent night. Hw: Identify three major locations along the Oregon Trail and provide four facts about each location; make a verbal/sign language YouTube video using the information. ▪ Thursday: Draw Oregon Trail maps. Upload maps to Blendspace for parent night. Hw: Make a “pioneer” recipe. ▪ Friday: “Welcome to Oregon” party. Pioneer recipes brought to class. Play The Oregon Trail video game. ▪ Daily: Oregon Trail/Pioneer blogging.

Technology ▪ PowerPoint – Visual Instructions. ▪ iPad: E-book version of the Social Studies textbook. ▪ Google Archives/Time’s Machine (The New York Times- Newspaper research. ▪ Video/Blogspace: Monday night’s homework/daily pioneer blogging. ▪ Microsoft Excel: Budgeting/supplies activity. ▪ Wikispace: Tuesday night’s homework. ▪ Slideshare: Class slideshow of edible covered wagons. ▪ YouTube: Wednesday night’s homework. ▪ Blendspace: Oregon trail maps.
