4. Is this a primary source? Painting titled Rejection letter by Trinh Do. Trinh Do was a dissident artist and was imprisoned in Vietnam. After he escaped and was waiting in a Hong Kong detention center for the status of his family he painted this picture.

5. What about this? Edwin Bryant was a journalist who arrived at Sutter’s Fort on Sept 1, 1847. His journals were one of the first sources of authority on California during the discovery period.

6. Is This? Autobiography. It is important that it captures the life of the author.

11. How to evaluate a Primary Source Understand the purpose of the website before using the Primary document. A cite may not use a primary document appropriately. Check to make sure it has not been altered or Manipulated to alter its meaning. Look at the website, who published the information. Look at Domain .edu and .gov are usually most reliable but be careful Sometimes government sites may have their own agenda ( a.k.a purpose, propaganda)
