She was a pioneer as one of the few female scientists in her field and received many honors for her contributions over her long career.

This document discusses the argument that world affairs may be more peaceful if women dominated politics instead of men. Proponents of this view believe that biologically, women are less prone to violence and war than men. However, critics argue that there is no conclusive evidence that gender alone determines one's likelihood for aggression or support for war. While some research has found boys tend to be more aggressive than girls, it does not mean girls are inherently non-aggressive. Additionally, women have traditionally lacked the power to engage in violence, so polls showing women oppose war may reflect a lack of choice rather than innate pacifism. The document explores both sides of the debate over whether a female-led political system would necessarily be more peaceful.

Plato is considered one of the most influential philosophers of all time. In works like The Republic and The Symposium, he developed his theory of Forms which proposed that the true essence of things exists in a non-physical, perfect realm comprehended only by reason and the mind. For Plato, the physical world we perceive is merely an imperfect

2. Michael Henchard Critical Lens Essay
The quote Proud people breed sad sorrows for themselves said by Emily Brontë describes Michael
Henchard in the book The Mayor of Casterbridge written by Thomas Hardy. Throughout Henchard s
life he makes mistake after mistake, only to blame others for his wrongdoing; but ends up only
causing more harm to himself. In the beginning of this story, he starts out as a young, immature
husband who s abusive and always drunk, but after one detrimental night, his life s turned upside
down. He moves to, and later becomes mayor of, the small town of Casterbridge where he spends
years trying to forget about his past, until his past shows up disguised as his wife and daughter he sold
to a stranger 20 years prior. Michael Henchard s pride has caused him ... Show more content on

Lucetta falls ill and dies, and now Farfrae and Elizabeth Jane are planning on getting married. Even
though Farfrae s now Henchard s enemy, he s willing to overlook his own emotions first, and put his
daughter s first. Henchard leaves town of their wedding day, but once Elizabeth Jane hears that he has
left, she immediately goes looking for him and finds him at a friends house, near death. Henchard
passes and his daughter takes his will, only to read that Elizabeth Jane Farfrae be not told of my death,
or made to grieve. (242) Hardy s use of diction here is important because Henchard says Elizabeth
Jane Farfrae which implies that he has learned to put his past rivalry with Farfrae aside and accept
their love. He also feels that he has caused enough pain in her life that she does not deserve any more.
He s somewhat guilty for all the things he has put her through. The will continues to say that no man
remembers me. and Hardy s use of tone signifies that Henchard s not doing this for pity, he s true in
his words (242). This is a huge change in Henchard s character because, previously, all he wanted was
to be accepted and thought highly of by everyone, and now he asks that no one remembers him. After
reading her father s will, Elizabeth Jane comes to the realization that he has truly had a change of heart
and that the man who wrote them [the words on the will] meant what he said. (243). Elizabeth Jane s
tone in this sentence suggest that she forgives him for all the pain he has caused her, and she s willing
to move forward. Through Henchard s acceptance of her marriage, he s truly a different person,
because before, he would have only thought of how the situation applied to him but now he s finally
thinking of other people. Henchard s cognizance allowed him to realize that his pride was doing
nothing but hurting his relationships with

3. The Fifth Season Sparknotes
Okay, so this is how this is going to work... The deep book review will be split into different sections,
one where I will dump a bunch of information about the storyline on the reader, another where I will
rant about what makes this book deep but not good, and, finally, another about the author. The
footnotes will be my way of interjecting Laszlo esque commentary on what would normally be a more
formal piece of writing without drastically altering the formality of the review.
Throughout the book, The Fifth Season changes from Syenite to Damaya to, finally, a character
referred to as you (as you might expect, all chapters written from you s perspective are written in
second person). As the book moves on, switching from character to character, similarities between
Syenite and Damaya start to appear, until, chapter seventeen, when it is revealed Damaya is just a
young Syenite. Towards the end, Syenite is revealed to be you (your name is Essun). So all along,
when you thought you were reading the story of three different ... Show more content on

The Fifth Season is definitely interesting, however, I sort of enjoyed reading it because of its
complexity, and, as it is part of a series, it has a sequel. This sequel gives you a glimpse into what is
going on with Nassun and helps explain some stuff, namely, what the hell is happening. Well, Father
Earth lost his favorite child, so, in an attempt to appease Father Earth, some of the stone eaters decided
they should try and get his favorite child, the moon back. So, the book ends with Essun getting ready
to catch the moon. Pure awesomeness aside, I feel like I liked it better when things were confusing.
The second book, The Obelisk Gate, doesn t contain as many of the storyline scrambling mind
blowing revelations that made the first one so interesting, so it has to rely mostly on storyline. This
means it is a bit more enjoyable to read, but it doesn t contain any of the things that, in my mind, make

5. Jean Piaget And His Theory On Cognitive Development
Jean Piaget and His Theory on Cognitive Development Jean Piaget is one of the most influential
theorists in cognitive development and he argues that children pass through the same sequence of
stages when it comes to this developmental domain. This paper will begin with a general overview of
Jean Piaget s beliefs when it comes to children s cognitive development and the basics of his four
stages. Next, an in depth look will be taken at each of the stages followed by defining the Piagetian
ideas of adapting in the world through assimilation, accommodation, and disequilibrium that may
results. These ideas will be accompanied by examples and significance to the classroom. I will
conclude with a summary of all the points previously discussed. As introduced, the distinguished
Swiss psychologist, Jean Piaget, is one of the most influential theorists in cognitive development.
Author Barry J. Wadsworth (1996) wrote about Piaget s vast contributions to the understanding of
children s intellectual development and though his initial interest was in biology, the idea that the
development of children s intelligence could be studied experimentally by examining their thinking
and reasoning peaked his research interest into this field (p.6). Throughout his research, Piaget was
more interested in the qualitative, not quantitative, characteristics of development. He was concerned
with how a child came to understand the knowledge and material, not with how much the child knew

6. Engineering Skills Gap At The Manufacturing Sector
Abstract
This report looks into what the future may look like for the manufacturing sector as well as
engineering in Wales. The future looks potentially very good, with many predictions of growth in the
manufacturing sector, with a possible £27 billion more each year from 2022, for the UK in general,
drawing more companies in and creating many more jobs in the process. However, the main obstacle
is an engineering skills gap, with many more engineers required to fill the vacancies and replace the
aging workforce, than Wales is currently producing. There are a number of programs to try and
increase the number of children studying STEM subjects and funding to create more engineering
apprenticeships. While the 2022 target is within reach a lot more work is needed to produce the
required number of engineers to make the growth possible.
Introduction
The manufacturing industry is comprised of businesses that manufacture and process products from
raw materials or commodities. It includes a vast range of sectors such as food, chemicals, automotive,
computer equipment and electronics. In most developed countries manufacturing takes up a significant
part of the economy.
This report will look at the current situation of the manufacturing sector as well as engineering in
Wales, and look into what the future may be like, as well as what is being done to achieve it.

0.5% growth is expected in the upcoming years. It is predicted that by 2017 the total revenues will

airlines hold 65% of the total market share which is high as compared to other countries. Nevertheless
every other competitor is using world class crew, services, uniform, and food to attract more
customers. Even though there is high competition, Qantas has competitive edge by having a strong
brand, better slots at airports and well trained staff. (Bloomberg, 2011) Virgin Australia and Tiger

8. Dao De Jing And Daoist Philosophy
Imitating a particular action, thing, or other person first entails perception and observing. Imitation of
nature to live in harmony is the basis of Daoist philosophy, which begins with observation. Having
ideals and a path stems from understanding how to perceive and achieve the ideal through the path.
The process of realization begins with chapters from the Dao De Jing, practicing Aikido with intent,
and the connection with our environment. A major part that I observed in the Dao De Jing is the
realization that Dao is significant to a harmonious life. Focusing on Dao and the passages of the Dao
De Jing tie together what Daoist philosophers believe. All these things combined, brings about the
principles of Daoist philosophy.
Before parallels can be drawn between ideals and paths in Daoism, Daoist philosophy and Dao must
be defined. It is hard to put Daoist Philosophy into a nice, neat sentence because of the complexity and
vast amount of information on the subject. For the intent of this paper, Daoist philosophy is defined as
a Chinese philosophy that takes a more naturalist approach to religion and way of living. It is the
connection between imitating nature and harmony. Dao is defined in Chapter 1 as the constant moving
everything that surrounds us. It is not tangible, it is just what it is, and you do not know exactly what
this something is.
Living in Harmony with everything surrounding oneself requires a realization of what is around and
how to properly interact with one s surroundings. One must join an ideal and a path to achieving that
ideal. Without a path, can the desired goal have the outcome that is intended? A reading from the Dao
De Jing suggest no, that the path and ideal are connected and one. But first, one must learn how to
perceive nature. Perceiving nature is necessary to be able to imitate it correctly. Observation of what
surrounds us and how we interact with our environment. Chapter 36 of the Dao De Jing talks about the
idea of perceiving and understanding one s insight. Whatever is gathered in must first be stretched out;
whatever is weakened must first be made strong; whatever is abandoned must first be joined; whatever
is taken away must first be given. This translates to if you

13. Ideology In The Selfish Giant, And The Bling Ring
In both the films we watched in class a large range of ideological perspectives were presented, and
those perspectives were largely based upon their director s views and opinions of the world. The two
films were The Selfish Giant directed by Clio Bernard, and The Bling Ring directed by Sophia
Coppola. Ideology is a very important concept in both films, and it can be defined as a systematic
body of ideas, attitudes, values and perspectives that help shape a particular culture or group within
that culture. Each director uses formal elements, and character values to show specific ideologies. In
The Bling Ring Sophia Coppla focuses on showing the life style that a group of corrupt teens so
desperately wants to live, and why the culture surrounding them is the reason for their corrupt values.
While the film The Selfish Giant highlights issues of working class people, and a culture that has put
children in a position where stealing to support ones family feels like doing the right thing. Select
characters in each film have a fascination with material things, and although they have very different
reasons for them the side effects they experience because of these fascinations are very similar. In The
Bling Ring the characters have a strong desire to acquire the most popular, and extravagant fashion
items; the motivation behind this desire is that they have learned base their self worth off the things

Although there are no major changes to the operations of Indigo, it is evident that as a result of having

Indigo s revenue is declining as a result being unable to increase the amount of profit. They are still
unable to cut expenses down enough to maintain a positive net income.
Ratios The 8 ratios that are best used to evaluate indigo are current ratio, debt ratio, rate of return on
owner s equity, price earnings, inventory turnover, interest coverage ratio, dividend payout ratio, and
accounts receivables collection period.
Current Ratio Current ratio indicates a company s ability to pay off short term liabilities. Starting at
2012, the current ratio of Indigo was 1.98, very close to the desired ratio of 2. However since 2015,
the current ratio has declined by 0.09 to 1.89. This shows the company is not in as stable of a financial
standpoint as 2012, due to a lower ability to pay off short term liabilities. However, when compared to
the industrial and sector averages, 1.78 and 1.77 respectively, Indigo actually comes out as above
average. This suggests that despite, a lowered ability to return short term liabilities, Indigo is still very
capable at returning short term liabilities as a result of the nature of the industry and

For my observation, I observed a first to third grade special day class at a public Fresno Unified
School District classroom in Fresno, California. When I first entered the classroom all the students,
approximately 10 students, were sitting down on the rug in front of the class as the teacher was
reading a short story to them. When she finished they would go over their reading assignment.
For the first half an hour, I could see that the students in the back had a difficult time sitting still in the
crisscross position on the rug. One student would frequently stand up on his knees, lie down on the
rug, or spin himself in a circle. During this time I noticed that most of the students who also sat in the
back row on the rug was talking to their peers, while one student stayed quiet and entertained himself
with hyperactivity movements, sucking on his thumb, or playing with his shoelaces. When the teacher
finishes her explanation of the butterfly life cycle, a student quietly raised his hand and asks her if he
would be able to create a human life cycle instead.

19. Team Training Essay
After I examining your training records it s evident that you re extremely smart. You dominated your
end of course exam with a 92% to become a 5 level as an Aircraft Structural Maintainer. However,
looking at your hands on training completion date I began to question if you truly understood the
material. I also questioned if you received the proper training. Unlike the average completion dates I
ve seen in the past, you completed your 5 level tasks in roughly 16 months versus the norm of 8 10
months. On the contrary, my perception of how you affected the team dynamic in the shop was that of

20. Patricia Donovan Deliver Her Summary
A Review of Deliver Her by Patricia Perry Donovan
In her introductory novel, Deliver Her, Patricia Perry Donovan turns the page in her writing career,
moving from journals and a concentration on non fiction to something more creative and in novel
form. As the back cover of the book highlights, this composition is about A daughter s grief. A mother
s desperation. An endless highway of deception. This book is easy to follow and not only entertains
but also leaves the reader with food for thought at the very end.
The author s audience is also clear from the back cover description and is sure to include mothers and
adolescent daughters alike. Some additional readers this novel would likely appeal to include those
struggling with grief over losing a loved one and people encountering or enabling addiction. It is
likely the audience will find the primary characters very easy to empathize with. They include the
mother, Meg, daughter, Alex, and Carl, a man the mother hires to Deliver Her daughter to Birches, a
remote, alternative type school intended on resetting the path of troubled youth. Alex s troubles began
on the night of her 16th birthday party when her friend Cass dies in a car accident involving their

The groups (Church, Palace, Husbands) are chastised by Blake for their contractual interest in others,
but lack of responsible concern.
In lines three and four, the author begins to point out the visual evidences of society s spiritual
22. malaise. Blake uses the word mark several times to show the reader the problems he sees have
outward signs marks of weakness, marks of woe. In stanza two, Blake leaves the visible evidence for
the audible evidence, and we begin to hear the groans of a fallen world. Man and infant cry one in
experience, one in innocence yet, both in a fallen world, both raising a pained voice. From line three
on, the poem is filled with mournful, weary, destructive sounds the pounding out of the mind forg d
manacles ; the sad weep! weep! of the chimney sweeper (Blake 33); the dying soldier s sigh; the harlot
s explosive, withering curse. All of these sounds contribute to the picture of society reeling in the
deadly stages of metastasizing cancer.
Repetition is at its most concentrated use in stanza two where the word every is used five times (seven
times overall in the poem). Blake certainly wants the reader to know that the signs of oppression and
slavery are everywhere and on every face no one is exempt.
In line seven, Blake again skillfully uses a word with multiple meanings. Ban can be a curse,

In How to do Things with Words , Austin tells how some words are actually used in speaking and how
others are merely utterances. How are utterances so important if it is only a simple statement that is
being made? Why does society put so much value on these statements, such as I do ? First we must
establish what exactly an utterance is according to Austin is. According to Austin, an utterance is a
spoken word or sound that is made to provide information. Sometime these words are understood
other times it may just be a sound that does not make sense at all. A popular utterance that is used
heavily is the I do statement used in weddings. Why does such a simple statement have so much
weighing on it? These two simple words mean so much to the two people that are getting married. For
them it means that they are choosing to spend the rest of their lives together. A question proposed by
Austin is why isn t a full statement used at weddings since it is so important? Is it much simpler to use
a two worded phrase instead of a longer sentence? I believe that the answer is yes, it is much simpler
to use a shorter phrase rather than a much longer statement. This can relate to how in today s society

Follow your inner moonlight; don t hide the madness. You say what you want to say when you don t

the masses to no longer be a mass, but an individual. He was truly a pioneer of his generation, a
revolutionary in thought, and this is not his quote. Due to his paralleled lifestyle to Walt Whitman,
Allen Ginsberg learned and drew inspiration from such works as Leaves of Grass to apply towards his
own book, Howl and Other Poems in the 1960s.

The younger years are the most influential, there is no doubt that Ginsberg stored Whitman s messages
in his heart and kept the morals throughout his life. Proof of this lies in Ginsberg s alteration of
religious views. Kaddish in Judaism is meant as a mourning prayer, a title meant as reflection of
Ginsberg s mothers mental problems. Though Ginsberg s origins were Jewish, he would convert to a
Buddhist belief system which would subsume into his work and themes. Walt Whitman was a
humanist, part of the transition between transcendentalism and realism that played a major role in the
writing of that generation. When Whitman figures Leaves of Grass as the product of a harmonious
identity between the human body, human society, and the natural environment, a realm distinguished
by an intense focus on the material existence of the human body, and a radical freedom consisting in
an unfettered identification of the body with its material environment (Nineteenth Century Literature
Criticism). The belief of letting go of material value and place a value in self discovery.
In their respective time periods both Ginsberg and Whitman held the same purpose in their poetic
compositions. Whitman would chastise the American society for being money driven. Although the
Civil War had ended and the need for income was desperate, this desire for wealth had flourished into
the American mind set. The opening of the west, the surge of immigration, the melding of a

In order to endure, one must get along with himself to prevent the self pity that cripples the human

In Eduard Manet s A Bar At Folies Bergere, Manet uses luxurious imagery and the symbol of the

the viewer to conclude that materialistic objects cannot take away from one s inner tribulation. A
plausible theory my group had discovered was that the woman seemed to have aspects of the higher or
richer class juxtaposed around her, yet she still seemed troubled. This leads us to the idea that she

The faculty decided to use Extreme Programming as the method for the Foundations course because it
was an agile method, it had good engineering practices, and it was a safe sandbox environment for
engineers to try paired programming since many managers in industry were initially skeptical about its
benefits. In 2005, the faculty allowed three of the sixteen teams tried our new curriculum to see if
there were any serious issues in the switch, while other thirteen teams continued to follow a start point
in 2004. The feedback was extremely positive so in 2006, all teams followed Extreme Programming.
For the project plan duration, Waterfall teams needed fifteen weeks to finish their tasks where as
Extreme Programming teams were given only thirteen weeks, a 13% reduction in time.

38. Taking a Look at Autobiographical Images
Viewing autobiographical images is often a relational experience. Within contemporary art,
autobiographical work opens up the possibility of creating new kinds of relationships between people
of different backgrounds. It can operate both as a representation transference of lived experience and
as an apparatus for experiential, relational viewing. When viewers encounter work that deals with the
autobiography of the artist, they engage cognitive and affective processes that often involve
identification and memory. In this practice of relational viewing, the artist s work functions as a
powerful catalyst for memory, whereby viewers draw upon their own life stories to connect with the
work. Consequently, the viewer not only perceives the image in the present, but projects it back the
artist s and their memory, body and being. Contemporary artists Rebecca Belmore and Nan Goldin
explore their own memories and past experience through their portrayal of the body. Their use of body
language is quite deliberate at creating subtle tension between the viewer and the work that evokes
this aforementioned relational viewing. Belomore s Firnge (2007/08) a photographic transparency in a
light box draws on not only the memories of her past, but the aboriginal culture and people she
attempts to represent. Goldin also represents a wider group then herself, the New York Bohemians.
Rebecca Belmore is an Anishanaabe Ontario born multi disciplinary artist currently working in

39. Juvenile Delinquency And The Law Of The United States Essay
Definitions of juvenile delinquency vary everywhere you go in the world. The laws change from
country to country and even from state to state. The United States Justice Department defines a
juvenile as a person who has not attained his eighteenth birthday , and juvenile delinquency as the
violation of a law of the United States committed by a person prior to his eighteenth birthday, which
would have been a crime if committed by an adult (Office). The Justice Department also says, A
person over eighteen but under twenty one years of age is also accorded juvenile treatment if the act of
juvenile delinquency occurred prior to his eighteenth birthday (Office). Many states have lowered the
age of a juvenile to seventeen. The way a juvenile has been treated over the years has changed
drastically.
We can trace the first penalties for crime against society, both property and personal, back to biblical
times. The Old Testament is loaded with laws that led to immediate punishments, which ranged from
public shame to death. The Bible was specific to make the punishment fit the crime. Deuteronomy
21:18 21 tells that if a man has a son that is rebellious, doesn t obey his father or mother, and will not
listen then he should be brought to the elders of the city. The son will be publically berated, all the
men of the city will stone him, and he shall die. The evil would be taken away from them and fear
would be on Israel (Bible). Age was not a major consideration for

40. A Wrinkle In Time Literary Analysis
A Wrinkle in Time: Proof that Faults are Strengths A Wrinkle in Time s theme showing that faults are
strengths compares to the 2018 movie adaptation. It is commonly believed that faults are flaws or
weaknesses; however, this is not necessarily true. What if a fault was viewed simply as a difference or
even a hidden strength rather than an imperfection. Madeleine L Engle s classic novel A Wrinkle in
Time provides us many examples how personal faults can be our greatest strengths. This is not only
demonstrated throughout the book, but it is seen in the modern day movie as well. The novel and film
both show the power of faults, but the book emphasizes the theory in more detail than the movie. To
prove faults are strengths, first the book must be analyzed. In L Engle s classic novel, Meg s greatest
faults become her greatest strengths. By Mrs. Whatsit granting Meg with greater faults (L Engle 112),
she is actually providing her with greater strength. does not immediately realize how this is possible.
My faults! But I m always trying to get rid of my faults (L Engle 112). The book details how Meg
learns her faults are her greatest strengths and this theme continues throughout the story. One of the
most powerful examples is shown with IT. IT s greatest weakness is love, but love is Meg s greatest
strength. Meg used the strength of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Wallace extremely smart. However, there is one major difference. In the 2018 film, many details

Ted Bailey of the University of Miskolc, interpreted Shirley Jackson s, The Lottery in his work Sacred
Violence in Shirley Jackson s The Lottery . In this work, Bailey reasons that The Lottery is a story
which encompasses violence through tradition, an agricultural fertility ritual, and scapegoating. In the
first instance, Bailey places emphasis on tradition in The Lottery . For example, one of the main
characters, Old Man Warner stands for the voice of an older generation who does not believe in new
and innovative traditions. The placing of stones in Little Davy s hand so that he also has to play a part
in the lottery can be seen as a component of prolonging the lottery for future generations. Not only are

He d come down with a fever and they lay in the woods like fugitives. Nowhere to build a fire.
Nowhere safe. The boy sat in the leaves watching him. His eyes brimming. Are you going to die,
Papa? he said. Are you going to die?
No. I m just sick.
I m really scared.
I know. It s all right. I m going to get better. You ll see.
His dreams brightened. The vanished world returned (186 187).
Response:
43. (CL) The last prediction made, foresaw an early death for the man leaving the boy on his own.
The man tells his son earlier in the story that there is nothing wrong with having nightmares, for if
they are having good dreams it means they have given up and he doesn t want the boy to give up. The
man s dreams are becoming brighter and the world before the fire is coming into his head. The man is
giving up. The prediction made earlier is coming true. (S) Cormac McCarthy
doesn t use quotes at all in this novel which implies a world so inhuman, hopeless and desiccated there
is no need or use of this punctuation. This style is very apparent in this quote as the man continues to
give up and becomes fatigued. Also, McCarthy adding the fact that the man s dreams are becoming
more lighthearted and content right after it is revealed he his becoming sick adds a large sense of
foreshadowing.

44. The Declarative Process Model
to create an infographic with the keywords Declarative process model . Background information about
this topic The constraint based approach in business process management regards pro cesses not as
imperative, but as declarative models. Traditional process modeling languages work with models of
the imperative approach. Imper ative process modeling defines that processes must be executed
strictly in the course they have been specified, i. e. activities need to be performed in exactly in the
form of the predefined model. Any change in execution or omitting of activities is prohibited by this
means. This is why imperative process model fall into the trap of being over specified sometimes.
However, not all processes need an exact representation of the control flow, such as informal
processes. On the contrary to the traditional imperative approach, the declarative process model is
more flexible and in this model, are no strict ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A lot of the time there is an infinite number of possible executions in a process model allowed. This
allows peo ple to choose from a high number of possibilities that satisfy the model, to pick the activity
which fits the process best. In Declare the constraints are based on templates. These constraints are
graphical representations of LTL (linear temporal logic) semantics. With this graphical representation
declare templates are understandable people even if they are no experts in logic. [6] The constraint
templates of Declare can be divided into four groups: 1) Ex istence constraints, 2) Relation
constraints, 3) Mutual relation constraints, 4) negation constraints Existence constraints can define
how often an activity is allowed to be repeated and can specify a particular position for an activity.
Existence con straints only refer to one single activity, whereas relation constraints and negation
constraints refer to more than one

45. Analysis Of The Book Bud, Not Buddy
I d rather be shot than sit around and watch my kids go hungry says one of the men trying to get
through the police line to illegally hop on a train headed west in Christopher Paul Curtis s (1999)
novel, Bud, Not Buddy (p.83). The novel is based during the Depression Era and describes a young
boy who has no family and is out on the lam trying to figure out what to do with his life. In one scene,
Bud, along with many others, tries to break a police line to get a free ride on a train to the west. The
crowd is screaming and pleading to get the police to let them get on the train, desperate for the
opportunities they believe can be found in the West. As depicted in this novel, during the Depression,
traveling West was a chance for a job or money, but one of the few ways to get there was by the
railroads. However, it wasn t just during the Depression that railroads offered hope for a better life.
Railroads have been depended on various amounts of times in America s history. It seems during some
of the hardest obstacles America has had to face railroads were an influence to the positive solutions.
They have revolutionized our country and have also contributed to a number of benefits. With today s

torn nets and the dead tennis balls strewn across the moldy courts. We gathered the children together
and divided them into groups, shepherding them to different courts. Okay, have any of you played
tennis before? I asked with a smile. Met with confused stares, I switched to Spanish, finally getting a

1. What aspects of U.S. culture ad of Indian culture may have been causes of Coke s difficulties in
India?
India and the United States have vastly different cultures. When doing business in foreign countries,
great care must be taken to recognize the culture of the country in order to avoid problems, such as the
ones Coca Cola experienced in India. In addition, business practices and governmental policies are
different between India and the U.S. Coca Cola should have taken care to study and familiarize itself
with the regulatory practices of India prior to doing business there. As most everyone knows, the
recipe of Coca Cola has long been held secret. When the Indian government demanded to be provided
the secret formula in 1977, Coke pulled out from doing business in India, returning 17 years later in
1993.
India scores high in power distance, where the communication is from the top down and authority is
for the most part not questioned and just accepted. In that regard, when pesticides were found in high
concentrations in some coke products, it was difficult to convince Indians or the Minister of Health
that Coke s products were safe. Another issue that may have caused Coke s difficulties in India relate
to communication. The U.S. is a low context culture, where communication is expected to be direct
and clear. In contrast, India is a high context culture, where often times meanings and direction are
often implied. Of the organizational structures, India falls
