Mainstream Capnometer:
The NDIR based sensor is directly attached with
patient’s ventilation pipe.
Quick Patient Monitoring
Two kinds of devices available in the market
Display mounted portable devices
Tabletop bulkier devices
Only useful for intubated patients
Useful in:
Ambulances (display mounted)
Hospitals (Tabletop)

Sidestream Capnometer:
A small pump along with NDIR sensor is working
to take air sample from the patient’s breathing.
Delay (upto 10 Sec) in Patient Monitoring
Useful for intubated & non-intubated patients
(both)
Useful in:
Hospitals

Microstream Capnometer:
Works same as Sidestream capnometer. Only
difference is in the air flow of the pump. In micro
stream, the airflow is very less than sidestream
capnometers.
Delay (upto 10 Sec) in Patient Monitoring
Useful in:
Ideal for use in patients with low tidal volumes

Colorimetric Capnometer:
A disposable device uses chemical reaction to
measure CO2 concentration.
Low cost alternative to the electronic capnometers.
Not useful to detect curare cleft and other
abnormalities (Abnormalities based on EtCO2
Graph)
Useful in:
Ambulances (Check proper intubation)

Transcutaneous Capnometer:
Noninvasive device that measures CO2
concentration in patient’s blood through skin.
Glass pH electrode that is placed on the patient’s
skin, and it measures the amount of CO2 that
diffuses through the skin into the sensor.
Commonly useful for Neonatal and pediatric
patients
