Ulysses S. Grant was born in 1822 in Ohio under the name Hiram Ulysses Grant. He attended West Point where he changed his name to Ulysses due to embarrassment over his initials. After the Civil War began, Grant had initial success but was later forced to retreat. In 1864, Lincoln promoted Grant to lead the Union armies. Grant maneuvered the Confederate General Lee's troops and finally accepted Lee's surrender in 1865, ending the Civil War.
