The Symbol Of The Green Light In The Great Gatsby
So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back carelessly into the past. Mr. Carraway s
hypothesis about the human condition reflects on humankind s innate desire to strive for their
goals despite the odds. Carraway s parable exemplifies my motives in applying for Advanced
Placement Language and Composition. Despite it being a competitive class to be accepted into, I
am willing to persevere despite the odds; with the current being all other prospective students and
myself being the boat that continues to beat on. The recurring symbol of the green light in The
Great Gatsby also reflects on my aspirations of the course. My personal green light, or aspirations
for the future, involves the acceptance into AP Language as well as... Show more content on

My substantial reading habits and well as my near perfect attendance are just some of the
guidelines I have set for myself. I spend a majority of my leisure time from the trains to and from
school to spare time in class reading. My fascination of classic literature combined with my
interest in various academic subjects, specifically science and history, inspired me join the
school s book club. As a founding member of the book club, acceptance into aforementioned
course would enable me to integrate ideas and novels from the class into club meetings, thus
making for much more interesting discussions. Aside from being a member of book club, I am a
prospective member of both the science and philosophy clubs due to my excessive interest in
science and debates. The integration of ideas and rhetoric from AP Language would also
enhance discussions in philosophy club. To add to my credibility, past experience in Advanced
Placement World History would further render me capable of handling an Advanced course such
as this one. My punctuality and superlative attendance would also prohibit me from falling
behind in class and missing work. Since my attendance is based on my desire for education,
missing class is of my lowest aspects. My eagerness for knowledge succeeds any personal setbacks
or flaws one might have and promises a successful future for

Pg For Children
In order to prevent children from experiencing the negative effects from sexual programming, the
rating system for these programs should be understood. Rating systems are what determines the
audience for the programs and the content involved in each type of rating. Along with the overall,
well known rating system of G, PG, PG 13 and more, sexual content has its own rating system
including a 0, S1, S2 and S3. A 0 on the system refers to no sexual content, no gestures of any kind
and no sexual dialogue or innuendo. Mild sexual content ranks as an S1, which contains a small
number of portrayals and sexual innuendo but no explicit sexual gestures. The S2 rating is graphic
sexual content which means that the intensity and duration are more significant,... Show more

For parents to be having such a large concern over whether children s programming is becoming
to sexually inappropriate demonstrates that times are changing and more of this sexual content
is being found. In 2011, a study was completed that found TV was the medium where youth were
most likely to encounter sexual content, with three quarters of kids saying they had seen sexual
material there, which shows that this is becoming an increasing problem (Saskatchewan
Prevention Institute, 2012, pg. 12). Not only are these scenes being included in adolescent
shows like Gossip Girl or One Tree Hill, they are being found in tween shows like Hannah
Montana as well as a majority of shows and movies for children like The Little Mermaid, The
Lion King, and Animaniacs. Children being exposed to these types of media to early is creating
effects that can either be informational or detrimental to the future of a child s life. The author of a
study completed at Harvard University, John Hughes, said one must ask if that is because the
culture we live in and the media we consume are forcing more mature themes, ideas, and issues
down the throats of children because the media in the world today is creating an environment that
includes sexual content, violent behaviors and offensive language (2006, pg. 1). Children are
unprepared for this type of content

Darwinism And Survival In White Fang, By Jack London
White Fang, written by Jack London, is a wonderful adventure novel that vividly depicts the life of
a wolf by the name of White Fang. Throughout the course of the novel, White Fang goes through
numerous learning experiences as he interacts with humans and other wolves from Alaska around
the turn of the century. Jack Londonuses the events that transpire during White Fangs life to
illustrate that only the cunning, intelligent, and strong will be able to survive. The ideas of
Darwinism and survival are reinforced by almost every action that takes place in the novel. Man is
shown defeating nature through superior intelligence, a wolf cub conquers his puppy hood, and a
young wolf survives despite the hardships placed upon him by man.

He comprehends the eat or be eaten ; structure of animal society and knows that he must eat and
avoid being eaten to guarantee his survival.
This concept of survival is reinforced as White Fang has his first encounter with man. His first
instinct is to attack when he sees his half wolf half dog mother recaptured by Indians, and he acts
on this instinct. The rocks thrown by the Indians, however, remind him that he is a mere pup
fighting against gods. Because of his intelligence, White Fang knows when to submit in order to
keep his life. All of his actions are predicated on the need to live.
White Fang spends the majority of his early life in retreat, but this quickly changes. He soon
grows into a savage and voluminous beast as a direct result of his persecution and mistreatment
by human and dog alike. The concept of eat or be eaten has been so perfectly been ingrained into
his system, that he loses any speck of compassion or kindness that was ever in him and becomes a
terrible killing machine. Whenever he sees he has the advantage over another living thing, he
exploits it and drops the creature dead in its tracks.
White Fang s reign of terror, however, only lasts until he encounters a stronger and more
formidable foe. Weedon Scott, a mining expert during the gold rush, narrowly saves him from the
jaws of a pitbull and teaches him one final lesson. This is that

The Spiritual Practice Of The Labyrinth
Since I was a child I was told to read the Bible, pray, and repeat. Eventually, these few spiritual
practices became empty rituals to me for a time. In the duration of this class thus far, I ve had the
chance to relook at my spiritual practices, learn why I should practice them, and then put them into
practice with a right heart. I ve also had the chance to partake in many other types of spiritual
practices. One in particular interested me, so I decided to try it that is, the spiritual practiceof the
Labyrinth.
There were many spiritual practices that I had never done before on the list, but the Labyrinth
was a formative practice that I hadn t even heard of. I had no experience with the discipline
before the class. However, I decided to try it because I might not have had the chance to practice it
again, unless I first tried it. Also, the fact of a spiritual practice having a labyrinth involved greatly
interested me, and I wanted to study it. When I found out what the Labyrinth was I wanted to try it
even more. A prayerlabyrinth is a labyrinth used to facilitate prayer, meditation, spiritual
transformation, and/or global unity. Walking a prayer labyrinth is seen in 3 stages: Purgation,
Illumination, and Union. Purgation occurs as you first walk into the labyrinth until you reach the
center, the goal is to clear the mind from distractions, and open the heart. Illumination happens at
the center, the goal to pray and meditate and listen to what God has for you. Union,

Dallas Case Study Essay
Dallas is one of the fastest growing cities in America and many people prefer to settle down
there. It is because of various reasons like the good quality of living at costs lower than other
cities and availability of good schools and job opportunities. However finding the perfect
apartment can be a stressful affair especially for those who are new to the city.
First one has to decide the kind of apartment one needs, the location one wants to settle down in
and then decide the price rent that one is comfortable with. One of the best ways to look for
apartments and to know about them is to do an internet search. The online apartment ratings in
Dallas are quite dependable and can help save a lot of money, time and energy. One can select the
parameters and the list of apartments that one gets will meet the specifications.
Online rating can help one to narrow down the search to few of the apartments which can then be
visited physically by the renter. If one wants to search for apartments physically, then it becomes a
bit hectic and problematic especially for those who are new to the area. However, few of the rating
services offers taxi services to take the renter to the different apartments. ... Show more content on

The Holocaust Of The Nazis
The Nazis, who came to power in Germany in January 1933, believed that Germans were racially
superior and that Jews, were inferior and were a threat to the German Racial community: this was
the idea behind the Holocaust, meaning sacrifice by fire . The Jewish population of Europe stood
at over nine million in 1933, most of these Jewslived in countries that the Nazis would soon
occupy. By 1945, the Germans and collaborators killed two out of every three European Jews as
part of the Final Solution .

The Greatest Leader Of Adolf Hitler
Despite one s cruel and inhumane actions toward another, their accomplishments were very
significant. There is one man who is the face of cruelty and inhumanity, his name is Adolf Hitler.
Adolf Hitler is known as one of the most evil leaders in world history but was also the most
successful leader. The achievements accomplished by Hitler makes him the most successful leader
in all of world history. Before he became the man everyone knows of, he was full of failures and a
very troublesome childhood. In the small Austrian town of Braunau, a boy named Adolf Hitlerwas
born on April 20, 1889. Young Adolf was very successful throughout elementary school and he
fit in well. The Austrian boy went on to Realschule, the college preparatory school, and started to
fail. He was forced to transfer to another school and by 1905, he quit preparatory school. The
teenage Hitler became rebellious and refused to start a job. When he started to refuse to live a
normal life, he started to live with the goal of becoming a famous artist. During this hopeless
part of Hitler s life, his mother passed away in 1907. When she died, 18 year old Hitler moved to
Vienna to pursue his artistic career. He attempted to join the Academy of Fine Arts which was a
popular art school at the time. With the notification of the failure of acceptance, Adolf became even
more hopeless. Wandering around Vienna, Hitler barely made enough money to make a living off
of painting and selling postcard. It was this part of

Adaptation of Modern African-American Writers
Adaptation of Modern African American Writers
Modern writers learn from the past by reading works written by authors of that particular era.
Contemporary African American writers gain knowledge and insight into the horrendous and
sometimes harmonious conditions that plagued Africans during slavery and the slave trade. By
reading the actual words, thoughts, and feelings of these enslaved Africans, modern writers receive
information from the perspective of the victimized. Lucille Clifton s slaveship is a vivid example of
a contemporary writer borrowing from the past to depict another account of the slave trade. The
fact that Clifton s father told her stories about her family s struggle and she, herself, traced her
lineage back to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As a result of the kidnapping and brutalization of these Africans, many knew that returning to
their homeland was not an option. In slaveship , the narrator asks someone if ever again can
[his] tongue speak, can [his] bone walkäcan this sin live (lines 19 22). These lines can be
interpreted to mean will he speak his native language again, will he ever get off this boat, and
will he ever live his former life again. Likewise, in Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano, he
saw [himself] deprived of all chance of returning to [his] native country (p 157). Even the idea of
referring to slaves or Africans as a sin is not from Clifton s own experience. Phillis Wheatley
wrote about people viewing Blacks as a walking sin because of the controversy surrounding the
mark placed on Cain by God in On Being Brought from Africa to America . She said that some
view our sable race with scornful eye. Their colour is a diabolic die. Remember Christians,
Negros black as Cain (p 171, lines 5 7). Clifton adapts from Equiano and Wheatley by using her
imagination and creative thoughts to capture the experience of the Middle Passage for many
Africans.
The tone of Clifton s slaveship parallels the works by Equiano and Wheatley. In slaveship , the
narrator expresses despair and disgust about his situation and disgrace for the men who captured
him and the other Africans. He wants to know from Jesus [or] Angel can these be men who vomit
us out from ships called Jesus, Angel, and

At the beginning of 2009, 65 percent of purchases in the music market was still attributed to CD
sales (Whitney, 2009). On the other hand, our other research has shown strong predictions that
CD purchases will continue to steadily decline in the future. This means that Sony needs to find
other ways to sell their music. Sony has had many opportunities to tap into the online music
market, but they don t seem aggressive enough in their attempts to become a strong competitor.
One year ago, Sony partnered up with Wind Up Records with an ambition to stimulate their
online sales with computers and mobile phones (Digital Deal Expands Long term Pertnership,
2009). This would allow them to compete with iTunes and the iPhone made by Apple. It has been
over a year since that partnership was formed, and there is no indication of anything like that
happening anytime soon. Furthermore, HP computers will soon include a European digital music
software and they want to distribute Sony s music since they are one of the largest record labels
in the world. Their computers account for almost twenty percent of the international PC market,
which would be a great digital outlet for Sony s music (HP signs deal to take on iTunes, 2010)

Analysis Of The Poem Sax Impey
Sax Impey is a Cornish artist, who works out of the Porthmeor studios overlooking the beach, St
Ives. Born in Penzance and trained in Newport, Wales where he studied . The majority of his
work is inspired by the sea. Continuing the tradition set in motion by Ben Nicholson, Patrick
Heron and other recognized Cornish artists. Alongside Francis Bacon as well. His work is drawn
from his own first hand experiences with the ocean and its relentless energy and overwhelming
power and its seeming endlessness. Growing up in Penzance Impey was always exposed to views
out to sea but a lot of the workis actually inspired by navigating around the world s oceans during
his career delivering yachts around the world for TV yacht delivery, travelling thousands of
nautical miles. The particular work of his I have been studying is from his exhibition Storm from
2011 at the Millennium Gallery, St.Ives. His work is technically very impressive with his skill of
semi photographic representation and carefully calculated compositions.
What am I doing here? You idiot .
Interestingly it never before occurred to Impey to make work about the sea. Despite being
surrounded by it his entire life. It wasn t until he was completely immersed by it that he became
captivated and inspired to respond to his experience. Particularly this work Storm which was
inspired by a real life near death experience of being isolated out at sea in unpredictably strong
winds whilst attempting to sail from Ireland through

For fuel injections the overall set up tends be on the higher priced side, and at times can weigh
more than traditional technology. Everything aside this technology makes it less difficult to adjust
the fuel to adapt to factors like, track conditions, or perhaps the rider s preferences. The program
works by pumping fuel into an injector, which then sprays the fuel into the body of the throttle.
Thus sending a signal to inject a calculated amount of fuel, after receiving information from
various sensors. Technology of this type can be extremely beneficial for the average rider, with
sensors to monitor things like crank position, throttle position, engine temperature, air temperature,
and barometric pressure. Fuel injection (FI) has become the preferred way to deliver fuel on four
stroke motocross and off road motorcycles. It provides superior throttle response, aids starting,
allows the engine to run smoother and operate better when temperatures and altitude change, and
even improves gas mileage (Gustafson 1). Now, instead of taking time to haltingly adjust settings
to the best of a rider or mechanics abilities, there are fuel injectors to shorten the work time. Riders
can hook up their ECM (Electronic Control Module), and the computer will do all of the work to
adjust settings, monitor temperatures and positions, and above all set up the bike

Grief In Hamlet
Everyone is going to lose someone they love at some point in life. It is simply the way life
works, and how each individual handles the loss can change everything. If a person doesn t
handle the loss well it can ruin everything, tearing their life apart. On the opposite end of that a
death could just be a small set back in life before moving forward. The griefis too much for some to
bear; they go mad, unable to operate without this person in their life. It all depends on how a
person reacts to the loss, in the case of Hamlet from Shakespeare s tragedy Hamlet, he was
entirely consumed by grief. He slipped into madness because he was unable to let go of his father s
death. Hamlet s problems all begin with the death of his father, King Hamlet,... Show more content

The ghost tells Hamlet that Claudius murdered him and that Hamlet must now kill Claudius in
revenge. This mission becomes Hamlet s only thought and drive, he states that he will wipe

This is where Hamlet takes the turn from bad to worse. Because he never let go of his father s
death Hamlet is a dead man walking, but now he has a drive for revenge that keeps him moving.
It becomes Hamlet s purpose in life. When the ghost visits him again, the ghost tell him Do not
forget this visitation Is but to whet thy almost blunted purpose (3.4.112 113). This is especially
interesting because unlike the first appearance of the ghost where everyone around could see him,
this time only Hamlet could see the ghost. There are two possibilities with this, the first being that
the ghost only appeared to Hamlet. This offers very little and would simply mean the ghost worries
that Hamlet is forgetting his mission, but the second choice is far more entertaining. The other
possibility is that this appearance of the ghost is a figment of Hamlet s crazed mind. This would
mean that crazy Hamlet is forgetting his purpose in life and is using that precious image of his
father, whose death he still mourns, to reignite his

Because it is so close to the equator, Costa Rica has a year round climate giving access to to a

The many fruits in Costa Rica are not just used for eating, that are used in the beverages frescos,

My Personal Strengths
Essay A
Growing up, my parents frequently bombarded me with the celebrated saying: Eat all your food.
Some people in the world do not have any . As a kid, I always shrugged this off as just another
instance of parents exuding typical parental behavior. Yet as I got older, I came to learn how my
parents sayings proved not merely proverbs, but in fact their history.
Having lived and grown up in Vietnam, my parents experienced hardships atypical to the average
American family; food, funds, and fear from their government. They found food a scarcity, and
placing a meal on the table came as an effortful task, so my parents resorted to getting jobs at a
young age. Difficulties from the Vietnamese government during the war also contributed to their
endless struggles. For an example, my dad, upon my grandfather s forced captivity from the
government, became the man of the house, a home with about 500 square feet, for a family of
ten. He took care of the entire family at the age of ten years old. Coupled with all the hardships of
surviving, such factors resulted in an arduous life for my mother and father. Due to their personal
life burdens, they made raising me a priority, thus instilling in me a determination for success and
wholesome traits in my personal character.
In order to guarantee a future filled with great accomplishments, my parents emphasized the
herculean importance of education. At a young age, my parental unit enrolled me in head start,
engaged me in piano

Australian Sports In The 1950s
Sport in Australia has grown increasingly important from 1945 to the present day as more
traditional sports soon expanded into a wider variety of sports with many factors contributing to this
change. As a result of the war, many men wanted membership opportunities to sporting clubs to
reinforce the bonding of mateship they gained during the war. As well as Australian men getting
more involved in sports, migrants from European countries started arriving in Australia, they also
brought with them an interest in sports and in particular soccer. As the growing popularity of soccer
was introduced it increased interest in more cultures to build clubs originating from their own
country impacting on Australia s multicultural upbringing. From the 1970s... Show more content on

This includes factors such as sporting competitions and television expansion. This has left a
positive impact on Australia as a nation because of the way our lifestyle has changed in the
ways of pop culture as we are now a country which is connected to others throughout the world.
The increase in growth of popularity in sports throughout the years has lead to an increase of
Australian viewers of sports making our national identity stronger in the terms of being a sports
mad country. Many clubs throughout Australia have been built by migrants from across the
globe which helped build our culture of sports and a multicultural society therefore leaving a
positive impact on the Australian people. The negative impacts that the increase of popular
culture had on sports was it drew it big television companies to pay large sums of money to
sponsor certain players, teams or competition leaving some of the many role models of the
sporting industry to let down there fans. Television is also have left negative impact on sports as
it allowed the companies to dictate when the games would be played to allow maximum audience.
Many people would argue that this is a bad decision because the times may not be best suited to
play that type of game and could injure the players because it could be too hot or too cold at the
time. Another negative impact of television is it lead to Australians becoming increasing unfit

A Rose For Emily Modernism
Throughout the short story A Rose for Emily , by William Faulkner, the new generation tries to
enforce modern standards on Miss Emily and her contemporaries. Despite their best efforts, the
older generation remains cemented in traditional values. The older generation faces a slow, tragic,
rotting death similar to Miss Emily s if they continue to adhere to tradition in a modern age.
Miss Emily is a contemporary of the older generation and her refusal to pay taxes demonstrates
how the adherence to tradition in the face of modern change leads to a slow death. The older
generation and by extension Miss Emily refuse to conform to modern standards because they are
bound by history and tradition. Social rank and and status heavily influence ... Show more content

Her entire life has been based on southern tradition implemented by the old generation, all of her
decisions in life have been made in order to correctly conform to that tradition. If she conforms

not conform, she gets rid of the new generation in order to keep herself sequested away from
modern change. She protects herself from them so she can continue to live in denial that any
change is necessary. For Miss Emily modern chage is unwanted and tradition is used to justify
her denial. Miss Emily allows southern tradition to fester within herself, She looked bloated,
like a body long submerged in motionless water, and of that pallied hue (220). She is barely

The Pros And Cons Of Nuclear Power Plants
For many decades, Nuclear Power Plants have become a growing argument between the educated
and uneducated. Some have grown towards the growth of these plants for their technological
innovations and environmental benefits. Others have walked away from the deal, repeatedly
exclaiming the risks and money that builds up over time. Though these problems remain open for
everyone to see, those arguments are outdated and overstated. In addition, there are far more
positives than the eyes can see, the negatives, however, are an eyesore. Nuclear powerplants will
benefit towns for the strict safety standards, the pricing of a nuclear power plant, promotional
factors, and land requirements.
Since the Obninsk Nuclear Power Plant opened in 1954, scientists and engineers have improved the

World War 1 Research Paper
World War I, which lasted from 1914 to 1918, was one of the bloodiest wars in the history of the
world, its horrors surpassed only by World War II. The start of the war can be traced back to the
assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria Hungary in June 1918 by Gavrilo Princip,
a member of a Bosnian Serb rebel group wishing to liberate ethnically Serbian parts of Bosnia
from the Austro Hungarian Empire and integrate them with the neighboring Kingdom of Serbia.
The assassination led to a cascade of events which ended in full scale conflict in Europe and other
parts of the world between the Allied Powers, consisting of most notably France, the United
Kingdom, Russia, Japan, Italy and later in the war, the United States, and the Central Powers:
Germany, Austria Hungary and the Ottoman Empire. The war ended four years later with the
defeat of the Central Powers. The Treaty of Versaillesdrafted in 1919, was one of the numerous
attempts by the Allied Powers to achieve revenge on Germany and dismantle its economy. The
treaty caused great unrest in Germany and dissatisfaction with the nascent postwar German
government, the Weimar Republic. The unrest and dissatisfaction led to the rise of the National
Socialist German Workers Party (NSDAP or Nazi Party) and its intent to destroy and replace the
Weimar Republic. The aftermath of World War I
, including the treatment of Germans by the Allied
Powers through the Treaty of Versailles led to a rise in radical German nationalism

Evaluation Of A Clinical Supervision Project
After completing my clinical supervision project, I can reflect on multiple things I have learned
about myself as a supervisor, including my approach to clinical supervision, my conference skills,
and my strengths and weaknesses. I now recognize more than ever that effective supervisors must
consistently self assess their practice and make adjustments as necessary for continuous
improvement, just as effective teachers do.
Throughout the clinical supervision process, it became apparent that I have strengths and
weaknesses that relate to each step of the process. My most notable strengths were related to my
conference skills. For example, I am comfortable working with people, and believe I make
others feel comfortable working with me. I listen well, and genuinely want to help teachers to
improve, which I believe comes across in my communication with teachers. Working with
teachers collaboratively seems to yield effective results, and I was able to develop strong ideas
for each teacher, both in terms of goals for their observations, and their action plans moving
forward after their post conferences. During the observation portion of the project, I believe I
showed some strength in collecting data about each teacher and their classes. I was able to collect a
large amount of data in only one class. In theory, I believe supervisors have the responsibility of
getting to know each teacher individually, including their unique teaching styles and individual

Essay about Standardized Tests Are Insufficient
Standardized Tests Are Insufficient
*No Works Cited
Anyone involved in education should be concerned about how overemphasis on the SAT is
distorting educational priorities and practices, how the test is perceived by many as unfair, and
how it can have a devastating impact on the self esteem and aspirations of young students, said
University of California President Richard C. Atkinson in a speech he gives to the American
Council on Education in Washington, D.C.
I really didn t enjoy taking the SATs. SATI cannot represent the individual knowledge of one

We should consider testing students on a broader range of topics, lending more insight to a student
s versatility. To base one student s potential solely based on one standardized testis both wrong and
lazy. Colleges should be willing to examine applicants closely. They need to understand that if a
high school senior has a 4.0 GPA and happened to get a 1050 on their SAT, they re not necessarily
incapable of learning. Looking at both class rank and GPA provides a more balanced picture, hence
it would increase the diversity of students entering college.
Doing away with SAT scores could increase opportunities for those students who do not score well
on formal tests to get into colleges, that they would not have normally.
The University of California regents are in the process of trying to decide whether or not to drop
the SAT as an admission requirement. Atkinson, whose field of expertise is testing and cognitive
science, is putting his support behind the idea of doing away with the test as a gauge of whether or
not students should be able to get into one of California s state colleges.
Atkinson feels the universities should adopt a more holistic way of judging incoming students. The
idea comes from the long standing belief that the SAT is unfair to minority students. Right now,
about 90 percent of the nation s colleges use the SAT as a means to make admissions decisions,

Milk and Viable Salmonella Essay example
Salmonella
Salmonella is a prokaryotic, rod shaped, bacterial organism. It is nonsporeforming and Gram
negative.(1) Salmonella is responsible for almost 60 percent of reported cases of bacterial food
borne illness and 40 percent of all food borne illness of any kind. Salmonella survives digestion and
reproduces in the small intestine, making people sick. Salmonella has hundreds of different types,
all of which cause much the same illness in humans. Eating food containing live salmonella bacteria
causes salmonellosis. (2)
Anyone can get Salmonella, but it is most common in children under 5 (and in the elderly).
Millions of cases occur each year in the United States, and at least half of them are in children.

Salmonella can cause enteric fever (typhoid fever). Some children have a salmon colored rash
(rose spots). When Salmonella bacteria get into the bloodstream, they can travel and cause
infection throughout the body. Children with sickle cell disease, HIV, and certain other causes
of anemia are among those at risk for complications from Salmonella. Salmonella can be spread
from person to person by the fecal oral route. Salmonella symptoms usually begin about 24 hours
after exposure (from 6 to 72 hours). Enteric fever can occur up to 60 days after exposure. The
symptoms usually go away within a week in otherwise healthy children. (2) It is estimated that
from 2 to 4 million cases of salmonellosis occur in the U.S. annually. (4)
Many different kinds of illnesses can cause diarrhea, fever or abdominal cramps.
Determining that Salmonella is the cause of the illness depends on laboratory tests which identify
Salmonella in the stool of an infected person. (1) Other tests, such as blood tests or spinal fluid
tests may be performed if there is reason to suspect that Salmonella is there. Salmonella may be
suspected based on the history and physical exam. (2) Salmonella bacteria is discovered in stool
cultures. Although blood cultures are rarely positive, bacteremia does occur in 5% of adults with
Salmonella gastroenteritis and can result in hematogenous spread to the heart (endocarditis), spleen,
bone (osteomyelitis), and joints (reactive arthritis). (3) Salmonella

The 1981 Nobel Prize Of Physiology And Medicine
The 1981 Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine
In the year of 1981 three gentlemen were awarded The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine
where the prize was divided and then shared amongst the three men. At the time of awarding, the
three gentlemen specialized in the field of neurophysiology while two also specialized in the field
of ocular physiology. One half of the prize was awarded to Roger W. Sperry for his discoveries
involving the cerebral hemispheres whereas the other half was awarded and split between David H.
Hubel and Torsten N. Wiesel for their findings on the visual system. Therefore, together their
research altered how people originally thought the brain processed information by verifying how the
brain functions and why information is perceived in such a manner. The research conducted by
Roger W. Sperry began in the 1960 s and dealt solely with the cerebrum. Before this time, society
only understood the left hemisphere of the brain to be dominant over the right hemisphere. In this
understanding, the cerebrum was composed of two halves, which were referred to as the
hemispheres. The cerebrum consisted of the two hemispheres and millions of nerve fibers that
allowed each hemisphere to distinguish what occurred in the other hemisphere. In the same sense, it
was understood that although both the left and right hemisphere were the same in structure, their
functions differed.

Return From The Inn
Part of the Permanent Collection at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, Pieter Brueghel the
Younger s painting Return from the Inn made around 1620, illustrates an outdoor winter landscape
of rural peasant life in early seventeenth century Belgium. Born in 1564 or 1565 in Brussels,
Belgium, Pieter Brueghel the Younger was a Flemish painter best known for being the oldest son of
the famous sixteenth century Netherlandish painter Pieter Brueghel the Elder and Mayken Coecke

At first contact with the painting, my eyes were immediately drawn to the center of the painting
where a dominant figure of a man is highlighted not only by his large size, but also by his bright
red jacket which invokes a strong presence in the painting. In contrast, the other peasant like
characters wear muted, dark colors while the child s clothing in the far bottom left of the painting
is almost indecipherable among the dark tree trunk. The use of the primary color red at the center
of the painting emphasizes a sense of tension, urgency and motion (Herberholz, Herberholz, 2002,
p. 29). However, I also observed the emanating warm palette of colors associated with this Flemish
renaissance era (Pastro, 2005, p. 51). The colors are cozy and reassuring. In truth, the blue sky,
light ochre buildings and the terracotta colored church, all covered with crisp white snow gives the
painting its arresting quality, presenting a peaceful winter country scene. Overall, the painting
presents a wide range of values and tones of colours. For instance, shades of yellow and gray are
strategically painted onto the snow to represent the shoe prints of the characters. Interestingly,
unlike his father, Pieter Brueghel the Youngerdepicted detailed objects in the painting through the
use of representational shapes. In these artwork, the emphasis is on the realistic presentation of
the subject matter. The people, objects, or landscape look very real and may be considered an
imitation of nature (Herberholz, Herberholz, 2002c, p. 90). In fact, artists frequently use realistic
shapes in a two dimensional artwork to represent three dimensional object forms that they see in
the natural world (Herberholz, Herberholz, 2002b, p. 34). In addition, the actions of the prominent
figures give the painting a series of clear lines that are sharp and even perhaps violent. In the book

Airfreight Industry Analysis
1. During the 1980s, the air express industry was a medium to attractive industry to already be a
major player in, but not a very attractive industry to try and break into. The industry can be
characterized by high rivalry from competitors who compete on the same services with very little
differentiation, medium power from suppliers who supply the resources necessary to run the
business, high buyer power because customers can basically find an equal service from any firm in
the industry, low substitution threat from other means of shipping transportation, and low threat of

Thus, threat of substitutes is low because air express still dominated the shipping scene and
electronic transmission was not yet perfected. Threat of entry is low because it requires large
capital investments for a firm to startup and thus it can impede the entry of new firms into the
industry. Lastly, it would be hard to break into the industry because the other firms already have
economies to scale, are further along learning curve, and may have certain airspace leases that
blocks out the new company from potential routes.
Therefore this industry is a pretty good one to already be in, but would be very tough to try and
break into. Since established firms do not have to worry about threat of entrants or substitution,
they can focus on making their core business practices cost efficient and profitable. Although
firms have to deal with high buyer and supplier power, every firm has to deal with these issues.
Therefore this leaves only rivalry to compete on, which forces firms to stay sharp, observe the
competition, and provide excellent service to the firm s customers to generate profit. Industry
competition intensified from 1988 to 1989 because there was a significant slowdown of the growth
rate of the air express industry due to increasing geographic saturation, the acceptance of electronic

ORIGINAL SOURCE: The major daily operating costs relate to the gasoline and oil consumed
for the water taxi operation. The cost of preparing food for customers when requested is
incurred by some operators. Few operators could give an accurate account of how much they
spend. Many could however estimate the cost of gasoline and oil for daily operation and in
some cases for a trip to the Tobago Cays (Appendix 6). According to one operator from

insurance for wooden boats. Two operators do however have their boats insured. One is among
the largest boats which has passed the inspections of the Grenada Port Authority. The premium is

result to false interpretation of bowel sounds (Jarvis, 2012). When I proceed to the patient s
abdominal examination, it is important to know the anatomy of the abdomen where each organ
is located. I would percuss M.M s abdomen and check for abnormal fluid and masses. According
to Jarvis (2012), flank dullness upon percussion may indicate fluid in the abdomen or ascites. I
would do palpation last if not contraindicated. Palpation is used for detection of masses and
tenderness, but because of the pain that palpation may trigger, it should be done in a careful
manner. In M.M s case, I would still... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I would listen for abdominal bowel sounds to listen for air or fluid activity eliminating bowel
obstruction in my assessment. It is common for someone who has a ascites to have a normal
bowel sounds, but diminished bowel sound over the ascitic area (Jarvis, 2012). I would do
percussion to a patient who have ascites and listen for dull sound. I would do a light palpation of
the abdomen if the patient tolerates. It is important that I check his mental status, because the
buildup of toxins in the brain is common to someone who has a history of alcohol abuse. I would
watch the patient for hepatic encephalopathy. Since the liver is unable to remove toxins from the
blood and accumulates in the blood resulting in confusion or decreased mental function. I would
also look for signs of ascites, because liver failure can cause fluid buildup and

Essay about Twelve Angry Men Juror 3
12 Angry Men Essay Juror#3 In a crowded jury room in downtown New York, opinions collide
as discussion about the innocence of a young boy is decided. The dark and foreboding storm
clouds that hang over the heads of the jurors are beginning to lift as time progresses and new
facts are presented. One juror is not happy about this stay of execution and is holding fast his
opinion of guilty. Juror three, the president of his business, refuses to alter his vote or opinion in
any way. Still haunted by his own son, juror three verbally assaults the group with a forceful tone
and a taciturn attitude. One of twelve, Reginald Rose created them all from the same pen and ink,
and they could all be no more different. Juror three is angry,... Show more content on

Seeing his chance, he is firmly set on this boys guilt, seeing his own son s guilt in the accused.
But it does not stop there. Throughout the play, juror three interrupts others in mid sentence and
attacks their opinions hoping to quash them quickly before they pollute his own flawless
opinion and doubt has a chance to creep into the dark crevices of his mind. For instance, when
juror eight surprises the group with a second knife, juror three is already angry, too angry. His
voice rises and shakes with an animal like ferocity. You pulled a real bright trick here. Now
supposing you tell us what you proved here. Maybe there are ten knives like that one. So what?
Not thinking that this put a dent in his case, juror eights brains have overcome the emotions of
juror three. With a very short temper to go along with his all powerful attitude, juror three is not a
nice person. Already he has threatened death towards one of the other jurors and would have made
good the threat had it not been for the decisive actions of the other jurors who jumped up to hold
him back.. An acrimonious and blind sighted executioner, juror #3 is one of many that an innocent
victim would not want to decide their fate. Unfortunately, democracy does not only apply to the fair
and just, and undoubtedly innocent men and women have fallen prey to the unwavering wrath of
men

Transcontinental Railroad Dbq Essay
Similar to the light bulb s legacy of ideas, the transcontinental railroad paved the way for new
transportation. The transcontinental railroad act is the first step in creating a continental
common market. This quote by, Charles R. Morris, defines the wide spread uprising in the
American Economy after establishing a railroad that would last a lifetime. The Transcontinental
Railroad economically transformed America because of the trade and commerce it brought.
Now capable of fast communication, we could quickly and cheaply of transport goods and
ourselves. t s wide impact developed a independent country were we could efficiently practice a
free enterprise. Bringing in trade, shipping and new exports/imports, it elevated our economy to
a higher level of technology. Once railroads were built, shipping by them became increasingly
popular. Shipping domestically became cheaper and quicker, which elevated the U.S. economy.
In Document E, the cost to ship by wagon is recorded to be twenty times the cost by railroad.
Furthermore, the article describes wagon shipping was $1.77, while by rail it was less than a
tenth of that amount. Before the invention of the Transcontinental Railroad, trade was limited to
wagons being driven for days on end. Few people considered the drive, so the price was high to
ship. Besides high prices, canals were... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
We grew domestically, but we were also able to supply the market with new materials. A 2014
study represents major imports and exports. The data portrayed by Document F, suggests 329
million tons of exports and 171 million tons of imports. As manufacturing increased, railroads
were an opportunity to transport these materials more efficiently. By exporting goods by railroad,
we were able to share materials found in America with countries across the world. Farmers also
benefited from railroads because they could could ship raw materials at a low

Personal Identity Is A Choice Not Dna
Personal Identity Is a Choice Not DNA In the quest for acceptance into the world many people
discover it difficult to put aside cultural difference to obtain, a better medium on social issues
surrounding racial derive tension. Equally, culture is a determining element in the average
household, on how a person should live out their life. The puzzling factor for many people is
finding a way out of the bias reasoning for why a person should only function as peers from their
own community. Comparatively, Langston Hughesa historical Harlem Renaissancepoet, is
addressing the topic base on personal identity in the poem Theme for English B. The time period
surrounds the Harlem Renaissance is not so different from the world of today on cultural
difference, that dividing people from being whom they want to be and reject by others on the color
of their skin. The reference of this poem is critical when analyzing issues of personal identity from
cultureto similarity in common interest in everyday people; the need for self identity. Thus, Culture
should not be an issue when attempting to find acceptance amongst others when advocating self
identity for personal acceptance in spirit. Pressure for change when identifying the need to move
away from origin in cultural up bring is a hard battle for anyone to win when family tides hold the
link in change. For instance, people undergo a lifetime of cultural awareness from birth with
knowledge of struggle and scarify instilled in the mind

The Constitution For New Zealand Essay
What should be included or excluded in a written constitution for New Zealand?
Moore (2016) emphasises the statement time for a 40 page New Zealand constitution declared by
constitutional law expert and former prime minister, Sir Geoffrey Palmer, in his article on
Stuff.co.nz. Palmer stresses that the present constitution is dangerously incomplete, obscure,
fragmentary and far too flexible (Hagen, 2016).
While there is a huge debate whether New Zealand should have a written constitution or not, it is
evident to some that the nation can benefit from forming one. With a precise and complete written
constitution, subjects and aspects crucial to New Zealand can be protected efficiently, while
simultaneously relishing the importance of existing constitutional acts in governing New Zealand.
New Zealand s resolution to examine the significance of replacing its unwritten constitution with a
written one may lead to a better managerial of important constitutional acts by highlighting the
differences between both written and unwritten constitutions.
According to TheFreeDictionary.com, constitution means fundamental law, either written or
unwritten, that explains the nature of a government by clarifying the basic principles which a
society must comply with; by describing the organisation of the government and regulation, and
limitations on the functions of government bodies; and by specifying the extent and manner of the
exercise of its sovereign powers (Farlex, 2003).

Mr. Carraway s hypothesis about the human condition reflects on humankind s innate desire to strive for their goals despite the odds. Carraway s parable exemplifies my motives in applying for Advanced Placement Language and Composition. Despite it being a competitive class to be accepted into, I am willing to persevere despite the odds; with the current being all other prospective students and myself being the boat that continues to beat on. For parents to be having such a large concern over whether children s programming is becoming to sexually inappropriate demonstrates that times are changing and more of this sexual content is being found. In 2011, a study was completed that found TV was the medium where youth were most likely to encounter sexual content, with three quarters of kids saying they had seen sexual material there, which shows that this is becoming an increasing problem (Saskatchewan Prevention Institute, 2012, pg. 12). Not only are these scenes being included in adolescent shows like Gossip Girl or One Tree Hill, they are being found in tween shows like Hannah Montana as well as a majority of shows and movies for children like The Little Mermaid, The Lion King, and Animaniacs. Children being exposed to these types of media to early is creating effects that can either be informational or detrimental to the future of a child s life. The author of a study completed at Harvard University, John Hughes, said one must ask if that is because the culture we live in and the media we consume are forcing more mature themes, ideas, and issues down the throats of children because the media in the world today is creating an environment that includes sexual content, violent behaviors and offensive language (2006, pg. 1). The rocks thrown by the Indians, however, remind him that he is a mere pup fighting against gods. Because of his intelligence, White Fang knows when to submit in order to keep his life. Contemporary African American writers gain knowledge and insight into the horrendous and sometimes harmonious conditions that plagued Africans during slavery and the slave trade. These lines can be interpreted to mean will he speak his native language again, will he ever get off this boat, and will he ever live his former life again. Likewise, in Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano, he saw [himself] deprived of all chance of returning to [his] native country (p 157). The start of the war can be traced back to the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria Hungary in June 1918 by Gavrilo Princip, a member of a Bosnian Serb rebel group wishing to liberate ethnically Serbian parts of Bosnia from the Austro Hungarian Empire and integrate them with the neighboring Kingdom of Serbia. The assassination led to a cascade of events which ended in full scale conflict in Europe and other parts of the world between the Allied Powers, consisting of most notably France, the United Kingdom, Russia, Japan, Italy and later in the war, the United States, and the Central Powers: Germany, Austria Hungary and the Ottoman Empire. The war ended four years later with the defeat of the Central Powers. The Treaty of Versaillesdrafted in 1919, was one of the numerous attempts by the Allied Powers to achieve revenge on Germany and dismantle its economy. The treaty caused great unrest in Germany and dissatisfaction with the nascent postwar German government, the Weimar Republic. The unrest and dissatisfaction led to the rise of the National Socialist German Workers Party (NSDAP or Nazi Party) and its intent to destroy and replace the Weimar Republic. Throughout the clinical supervision process, it became apparent that I have strengths and weaknesses that relate to each step of the process. My most notable strengths were related to my conference skills. For example, I am comfortable working with people, and believe I make others feel comfortable working with me. I listen well, and genuinely want to help teachers to improve, which I believe comes across in my communication with teachers. Working with teachers collaboratively seems to yield effective results, and I was able to develop strong ideas for each teacher, both in terms of goals for their observations, and their action plans moving forward after their post conferences. Looking at both class rank and GPA provides a more balanced picture, hence it would increase the diversity of students entering college. Doing away with SAT scores could increase opportunities for those students who do not score well on formal tests to get into colleges, that they would not have normally. The University of California regents are in the process of trying to decide whether or not to drop the SAT as an admission requirement. Atkinson, whose field of expertise is testing and cognitive science, is putting his support behind the idea of doing away with the test as a gauge of whether or not students should be able to get into one of California s state colleges. At the time of awarding, the three gentlemen specialized in the field of neurophysiology while two also specialized in the field of ocular physiology. One half of the prize was awarded to Roger W. Sperry for his discoveries involving the cerebral hemispheres whereas the other half was awarded and split between David H. Hubel and Torsten N. Wiesel for their findings on the visual system. Therefore, together their research altered how people originally thought the brain processed information by verifying how the brain functions and why information is perceived in such a manner. The research conducted by Roger W. Sperry began in the 1960 s and dealt solely with the cerebrum. Before this time, society only understood the left hemisphere of the brain to be dominant over the right hemisphere. In this understanding, the cerebrum was composed of two halves, which were referred to as the hemispheres. The cerebrum consisted of the two hemispheres and millions of nerve fibers that allowed each hemisphere to distinguish what occurred in the other hemisphere. In the same sense, it was understood that although both the left and right hemisphere were the same in structure, their functions differed. Born in 1564 or 1565 in Brussels, Belgium, Pieter Brueghel the Younger was a Flemish painter best known for being the oldest son of the famous sixteenth century Netherlandish painter Pieter Brueghel the Elder and Mayken Coecke van Aelstv (Artnet, 2016). At first contact with the painting, my eyes were immediately drawn to the center of the painting where a dominant figure of a man is highlighted not only by his large size, but also by his bright red jacket which invokes a strong presence in the painting. In contrast, the other peasant like characters wear muted, dark colors while the child s clothing in the far bottom left of the painting is almost indecipherable among the dark tree trunk. The use of the primary color red at the center of the painting emphasizes a sense of tension, urgency and motion (Herberholz, Herberholz, 2002, p. 29). However, I also observed the emanating warm palette of colors associated with this Flemish renaissance era (Pastro, 2005, p. 51). The colors are cozy and reassuring. In truth, the blue sky, light ochre buildings and the terracotta colored church, all covered with crisp white snow gives the painting its arresting quality, presenting a peaceful winter country scene. Overall, the painting presents a wide range of values and tones of colours. For instance, shades of yellow and gray are strategically painted onto the snow to represent the shoe prints of the characters. Interestingly, unlike his father, Pieter Brueghel the Youngerdepicted detailed objects in the painting through the use of representational shapes. In these artwork, the emphasis is on the realistic presentation of the subject matter. The people, objects, or landscape look very real and may be considered an imitation of nature (Herberholz, Herberholz, 2002c, p. 90). In fact, artists frequently use realistic shapes in a two dimensional artwork to represent three dimensional object forms that they see in the natural world (Herberholz, Herberholz, 2002b, p. 34). The industry can be characterized by high rivalry from competitors who compete on the same services with very little differentiation, medium power from suppliers who supply the resources necessary to run the business, high buyer power because customers can basically find an equal service from any firm in the industry, low substitution threat from other means of shipping transportation, and low threat of new entrants due to the high initial capital outlay and need of management ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Thus, threat of substitutes is low because air express still dominated the shipping scene and electronic transmission was not yet perfected. Threat of entry is low because it requires large capital investments for a firm to startup and thus it can impede the entry of new firms into the industry. Lastly, it would be hard to break into the industry because the other firms already have economies to scale, are further along learning curve, and may have certain airspace leases that blocks out the new company from potential routes. Therefore this industry is a pretty good one to already be in, but would be very tough to try and break into. Since established firms do not have to worry about threat of entrants or substitution, they can focus on making their core business practices cost efficient and profitable.
