Acid base balance refers to the homeostasis between acids and bases in extracellular fluids, with a normal pH value between 7.36-7.42. The lungs, kidneys, and buffer systems work together to control blood acid base balance. There are two main types of acid base disorders - acidosis when blood pH decreases, and alkalosis when it increases. Metabolic acidosis or alkalosis occur due to imbalances in acid or base production and excretion by the kidneys, while respiratory issues arise from changes in carbon dioxide exhalation by the lungs.
