the resolution of a 10-year period of violence
that did not extend any power to guerrilla fac-
tions, the FARC was born. The guerrilla group
was formed of militant communists and peasants, and in collab-
oration with the ELN (otherwise known as the National Libera-
tion Army), they aimed to instigate a communist revolution.
Violence and Kidnappings
Violence, kidnappings and assassinations have been the hall-
marks of the conflict and ways for the FARC to raise money for
its campaign. It is estimated that 25,000 people were kidnapped
between 1970 and 2010. The use of landmines has killed or in-
jured more than 10,000 people.
The drug trafficking trade has also provided the FARC with sig-
nificant revenue, representing another complex issue. Invest-
ment in rural areas has been highlighted as essential in order
to provide suitable alternatives for citizens to generate their
own incomes.
A Move Towards Peace
The 2002 presidential election saw the appointment of Alvaro
Uribe, who sought to address the violence and crack down on
the rebel groups. His work brought about a dramatic reduc-
tion in the incidences of violence and members of the guerril-
la groups, and while a peace treaty was eventually negotiated,
there remains work to be done in demobilization.
