Climate Change Is A Real Threat
Climate Change is a Real Threat Climate change is happening, humans are causing it, and I think it
is perhaps the most serious environmental issue facing us. This quote from Bill Nye illustrates the
serious nature of climate change. Climate change is the most serious issue that is plaguing the
world. Global temperatures have been increasing in recent years and it is clear that our climate is
changing. Climate changeis the change of temperature of our environment. A majority of scientists
suspect that humans are causing climate change by emitting CO2 into the atmosphere which
creates a greenhouse effect and warms the planet. The effects of climate change are far reaching,
impacting ocean life and plant life across the globe. It also... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

This could be disastrous for cities that are near the water. Business Insider states, Scientists have
identified 414 towns and cities in the United States that are guaranteed to eventually be
underwater (Sherlock). Climate change will not only be disastrous for people who live above
ground, but also sea life that lives in the ocean. As CO2 concentrations increase in the
atmosphere, larger quantities of CO2 becomes dissolved into the oceans. This creates carbonic
acid in the oceans and makes the ocean more acidic. The increased acidity of the oceans is
known as ocean acidification. According to the Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory, the
pH of surface ocean waters has fallen by 0.1 pH units. Since the pH scale is logarithmic, this
change represents approximately a 30 percent increase in acidity (Pacific Marine Environmental
Laboratory). Shellfish and coral cannot withstand a large increase in acidity and this causes
coral reefs to become bleached. Coral dies when the acidity becomes too high and this causes the
rest of the reef to die along with it. Scientific American states, growth and calcification of
massive Porites in the Great Barrier Reef are already declining and are doing so at a rate
unprecedented in coral records reaching back 400 years (Biello). Coral bleaching continues to
happen in coral reefs and will

A Brief Note On The European Union s Ems Standards Essay
According to Cheremisinoff and Haddadin (2006), EMS is a system that being planned and
implement by organizations to manage the way to interact with the natural environment. EMS did
not intend to focus on the emission or effluent waste, but its focus on the production processes and
general management system that cause wastes and pollution.
EMSs have three basic standards which included British Standard 7750 (BS 7750), European s Eco
Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS) and ISO 14000 whereby BS 7750 is referred as the first
EMS that published in 1992, finalized in 1996 and as the basis for the other two standards
(Cheremisinoff Haddadin, 2006). EMAS is the European Union s EMS standard that first
introduced in July 1993 with the objective of promote a harmonious and balanced of develop
economic activities by having the commitment from organization and continuously improve their
environmental performance (European Commision, March 4, 2015). Lastly, ISO 14000 was
published around 1996 and formed up the standard that focus on environmental management
established by International Standards Organizations after the success of developing quality
management ISO 9000.
Deming cycle or Plan Do Check Act (PDCA) cycle was the base model for EMS in promoting the
concept of continuous improvement. An environmental policy will be formulated to declare a
company s basic environment value and establishes guidelines that comply with environmental law
and regulations during the plan stage.

How Does Levi Characterize Nietzsche s Sickness
In Primo Levi s The Drowned And The Saved, his analysis of the Holocaust had conclusions and
assumptions that resonated with the philosophy of Nietzsche. More precisely, points made by
Levi can be drawn back to Nietzsche s sickness , slave morality and the role of the ascetic priest.
Although Levi is thorough to acknowledge the ideas of Nietzsche in his writing, he fails to fully
grasp how Nietzschean philosophy could view these events.
First, I would like to identify the parallels to Nietzsche s sickness . In chapter 5, Useless Violence ,
Levi concludes that the inhuman Nazi hierarchy spread its inhumanity from the top to all aspects of
its regime (Levi pg 112). Along these lines he acknowledges that this inhumanity spreads
downwards ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, in the case of the Third Reich, Hitler gave his followers the Jewish as a scapegoat to
their problems. To Nietzschean philosophy Hitler is equivalent to the ascetic priest who redirects
the public s ressentiment to the Jewish. It s important to note that ressentiment also built in the
Lagers but through the systemized degradation employed by the Hitler, it was redirected amongst
the prisoners. Nietzsche would see this in the Kapos and SS men, as they redirected the prisoners
ressentiment onto other prisoners due to prisoner on prisoner abuse. Furthermore, the self deceptive
aspect of slave morality can be seen in Levi s work. When Levi comments on the interrogations of
Nazis after the war, he examines the justifications made by the accused (Levi pg 27). This asserts
that the accused relied on self deception as a way to see their acts as just. This parallels to the
self deception in slave morality as the weak see themselves as strong by adjusting their realities
just as the Nazis. Lastly, Levi remarks rather negatively of Nietzsche. He notes that Nietzsche s
philosophy led to his morals becoming removed from the morality common to all time causing him
to lose touch with reality (Levi pg 106, 107). He also reflects on the fact that Nietzsche never
desired the suffering of the

Charter Schools Vs. Public Schools
At the foundation of the American public school system is the belief that every child deserves a
quality education. To this end, the public school system in America has undergone many reforms.
One of which has been charter schools. Charter schools are independent public schools of choice
working under the auspices of a charter and not governed by the board of education. The charter can
be written by parents, teachers, school administrators, community leaders, educational businesses,
etc. It determines the school s guiding principles, management and accountability systems. The
state approves the charter and provides funding for the school. Families choose these schools for
their children. ( Resistance Hinders Success, 2004) Charter schools differ from traditional public
schools on three basic principles: accountability, choice and autonomy. Charter schools are held
accountable for their ability to educate students, management of finances and handle operations. If
they do not meet the guidelines established by the charter they are closed. They give families a
choice as to what school their children will attend. Finally, charter schools have more autonomy
than traditional public schools. They are able to make their own decisions regarding curriculum
and school governance and can focus on academic achievement instead of bureaucracy. (
Resistance Hinders Success, 2004) Ray Budde first introduced the idea of charter schools in the
United States in 1974.

ARCF awards Giving Tree and Black Hall of Fame Grants and the Arkansas Delta Endowment

through a gift from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. MMWEC would be a good fit for the
Arkansas Delta Endowment Building Program and the Arkansas Black Hall of Fame Grant.
Because WRF MMWEC plans to launch in several communities in Arkansas with a focus on the
most marginalized, our state s capital, and the Arkansas Delta, we are in a position to apply for
funding through each of the counties we serve for the Arkansas Black Hall of Fame grants. This
will allow us to customize the funding needs based on our needs assessment of each county. The
Arkansas Delta Endowment for Building Community focuses on delta counties in Arkansas, which

The Psychology of The Gambler Essay
The Psychology of The Gambler
In Fyodor Dostoyevsky s The Gambler, we are presented with a novel whose protagonist is what
we would call today a problem gambler. The gambling mania of the story s hero, Alexei Ivanovitch,
is a mirror of Dostoyevsky s own gambling compulsion. The heroine, Polina Alexandrovna,
represents a woman Dostoyevsky had as a real lover. Polina is the stepdaughter of the General, who
Alexei works for as a servant. The General shows paranoia over gambling from the outset of the
story. He censures Alexei with respect to his care of the children, I suppose you would like to take
them to the Casino to play roulette? Well, excuse my speaking so plainly, but I know how addicted
you are to gambling. Though I ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He struggles with moralizing over this but knows a change in his fortunes can be had from
successful gambling, I had long ago made up my mind, that never should I depart from
Roulettenberg until some radical change had taken place in my fortunes...why is gambling a whit
worse than any other method of acquiring money? How, for instance, is it worse than trade? True,
out of a hundred persons, only once can win; yet what business is that of yours or mine?
(Dostoyevsky 8).
When it comes to writers and writing, there is an old maxim that is often repeated, Write what
you know. Dostoyevsky seems to have taken this advice to heart when it comes to his own
writing. For the gambler is based on a real love affair had by the author as well as being a first hand
account of the behaviors and psyches of the addicted gambler (which he was for a period of
time). As Christine McKay (2) points out, The Gambler is based on Dostoyevsky s love affair
with Apollinaria Suslova as well as his frequent casino visits to play roulette, which he began
playing in 1863, at a time when he was extremely poor. He experienced first hand the excesses of
gambling so aptly described in The Gambler.
Alexei is involved in the intrigues of the social climbers who surround the General for whom he
works as a servant. This too is an autobiographical element of the

What Are The Advantages And Disadvantages Of Gas Turbine
A gas turbine by definition is an engine in the centre of a power plant producing electric current
[1]. It is also a rotary engine extracting energy from flow of combustion gas. Gas turbine is
responsible for the conversion of natural gas or any other liquid fuels into mechanical energy. This
energy can therefore be used to drive the generator to produce electrical energy[1 3]. Gas turbineis
made up of components as shown in Figure 1 below. Figure 1: Gas turbineshowing arrangements of

Corrosion is the chemical reaction between the material and the surrounding environment causing it

substances in the fuel from the combustor. Agents of this reaction are contents of the fuels and
contamination present in the fuel and also pollution from the air entering the compressor [4]. There
is a reaction between sodium and sulphur, and oxygen forming sodium sulphate. The reaction

A Crucifixion Outside The City Of Jerusalem
This painting depicts a crucifixion outside the city of Jerusalem, discernible by the centrally
planned church and rounded red rotunda in the background of the city. Rounded structures that
resemble towers align the walls of the city, another definitive element of the biblical city. Although
the painting clearly represents an idealized Jerusalem, it emulates a contemporary European town
of the Northern Renaissance age, with Gothic architecture and what resembles shops at the front of
the city. The painter also depicts the mountainous terrain of Jerusalem, but portrays greenery that
the actual desert city would not have. The contemporary background makes the painting less
abstract and more relatable to the viewer. The overall composition of the painting is naturalistic:
emphasized by the light and shadow on the figures, the use of three dimensions, and the additional
details in the clothes of the figures. The body on the cross demonstrates the most amount of
modeling. The face and legs of the person are covered by shadow, while the light hits the left side
of the body at the chest the most. Also, there is an attention to showcasing three dimensions: the
objects towards the back of the painting get smaller, while the objects in the front are larger. The
three dimensions frame the picture, and create a sense of directly looking into the scene from a
front viewer. Lastly, the folding and drapery of the clothing accentuate the naturalism of the
painting by looking similar to

Mother and Daughter Relationship Exposed in Joyce Carol Oates Short Story, Shopping
The relationship between a mother and a daughter is one of complications, heartaches, and sweet
rewards. This is no exception between Nola and Mrs. Dietrich, characters in Shopping by Joyce
Carol Oates. The tribulations of their relationship are shown during their annual shopping trip. In
the time spent together, Nola is obviously trying to break free from her mother and become her
own woman. This coming of age path is expressed by her private thoughts and answers in
monosyllables (Oates 834). As Nola desperately tries to acquire her own self, her Mrs. Dietrich
desperately tries to hang onto the child in Nola. She tries to stay in her ... Show more content on

Her desire to make Nola happy shows that she is trying, but inside thoughts show that she does not
like the way Nola dresses, or the clothes she picks out, or the restaurant they eat at. Her emotional
attachment and need for her daughter overpowers her knowledge that it is time for Nola to grow up.
She would prefer for Nola to remain young. Despite her mother s desire, Nola is growing up and
becoming her own person.
Nola has embraced the beginning of adulthood and handles it very well. She tries to be an
individual by picking out clothes that are funky and fashionable (Oates 836). She makes an
astute and mature recognition be expressing the fact that she is not worried about the disheveled
woman [ s] affect on the people but the effect the people will have on the women (Oates 836).
She also defiantly smokes a cigarette in front of her mother. The rebellion is trying to show that
she is old enough to not have to follow her mother s rules or that she even cares what her mother
thinks. However, she has not reached full maturation because she is unable to recognize that her
mother only wants to be a part of her life. Her mother has needs too. Her mother only wants to be
loved, but Nola is constantly pushing her mother away.
In a store, Mrs. Dietrich watches her [Nola] covertly, and once Nola notices that she is being
watched, she walks away angrily (Oates 836). She does not see that Mrs. Dietrich may only

Analysis Of An Occurrence At Owl Creek Bridge
An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge by Ambrose Bierce has the audience feeling multiple
emotions such as shocked and on the edge of their seat from start to finish. Peyton Farquhar is a
plantation owner is his mid thirties. Farquhar was up for execution by hanging from an Alabama
railroad bridge the Civil War because a Federal scout betrayed him. Bierce could mislead the
readers thinking that Peyton Farquhar, was escaping from being hung when in fact it was just is
imagination. Bierce engages a great use of characterization in how he describes the characters
throughout the story and timing details, to have the audience sitting on the edge of their seats and
having a twist that no one was expecting. An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridgesucceeds in
misleading the readers by the way Bierce represents the timing between the events that go on. In
section III, there are a lot of details that serve a purpose in having the audience believing that he
is escaping. When reading The water, the banks, the forests, the now distant bridge, fort, and
men, all were commingled and blurred it allows the authors to picture him running far away
from the bridge like he was making his elaborate escape (Bierce). It was as if he finally broke
away from the soldier and that he was going to be saved. Everything in Section III is emphasized
as reality to the audience as if it is really happening, though it is all Peyton s thoughts right before
his death. Bierce characterizes of Peyton

behavior which disrupts the orderly conduct, processes, and functions of the university, or infringes

So, students may not be aware of what they can distribute on campus and what they cannot. I
believe Georgetown University literature policy serves as a notable example of a literature clause
that would be beneficial at Stetson University. They state that, Handbills, pamphlets, flyers and
quarter sheets may be distributed to any location on campus except classrooms or offices in use.
When handbill distribution is associated with a particular event, whether indoor or outdoor, the
location of indoor handbill distribution may be restricted on occasion to preserve safety and
security at events and convocation, but distribution in these cases may not be wholly prevented or
unnecessarily restricted. This policy and information is designed to assist individuals and groups in
the Georgetown University community in effectively sharing information with the rest of campus
in respectful and creative ways. (Georgetown.edu).
Stetson University also lack Political Activity policies. Our school does not explicitly state in our
code of community standards what we are politically allowed to. I provided the link to one that I
think is a good example of this, but it is too long for me to just copy and paste.

Rhetorical Analysis Of Henry Payne s The Political...
Political Cartoon Rhetorical Analysis
The political cartoon I chose was drawn by Henry Payne. The political cartoon depicts President
Obama playing golf. I chose this cartoon for many different reasons and I feel this relates to how I
feel about the current politics. I will show how this cartoon applies to the current situation the
government is facing.
The cartoon depicts President Obama holding a baseball bat trying to putt a golf ball into the hole
marked with a black flag which has the word economy printed on it. There are many balls
surrounding the hole on the green. Behind President Obama is a large golf bag almost larger than
he is. The golf bag carries the title obamanomics and behind the bag in the distance are spectators
watching him.
The reference of president Obama golfing comes after last weekend when he and John Boenher,
the current speaker of the house, went golfing to discuss the current state of the economy and to
work on a bipartisan solution to the problem. The economy has become the most important
political topic in our current culture. In the cartoon we see many people watching as president
Obama putts. This shows the interest in president Obama being able to fix the economy and how
important his solutions to the economy will be to our nation. A common person who works a
regular job can go and play a leisure round of golf on Saturday. Being president all eyes are fixed on
his actions.
The cartoonist shows president Obama putting with a baseball bat and

Analysis Of Esters Lab Report
PREPARING ESTERS
INTRODUCTION
An ester is an organic compound where the hydrogen in the compound s carboxyl group is
replaced with a hydrocarbon group. Esters are derived from carboxylic acids and (usually) an
alcohol (Helmensine A, 2017). The reaction required to produce an esteris called esterification.
Esterification is the reaction in which a Carboxylic acid combines with an alcohol in the presence
of a catalyst (commonly concentrated sulphuric acid) to form an ester (Esterification, 2017). This
is an example of a general class of reactions called condensations.
Esters are common in our everyday lives. Esters are colourless, volatile liquids with pleasant
aromas and create the fragrances and flavours of many flowers and fruits (Organic Chemistry Life,
2013).
Esters are also excellent solvents for organic compounds. Sunburns lotions, nail polish removers,
plasticisers and glues use esters as solvents (Veerenda, 2017).
The aim of this experiment was to investigate different reactions between a range of alcohols and
carboxylic acids to produce a variety of esters of different odours and discover how they can be
used commercially in household products. MATERIALS METHODS
The experiment was divided into three parts. Firstly, to record the aroma of each alcohol and
carboxylic acid that would be used in the experiment. Secondly, to prepare five different esters and
record the results. Finally, reporting the balanced equations for each of the

The Voice of Public Citizen In Texas I could relate to both sides of the Local Control and state

2 The issue of Red Light Cameras has been an ongoing issue for a long time now. It has gotten to
the point where our state government has jumped in. Individuals in our community have
worked hard to ban the red light cameras; while the government has done the opposite. In the
article, Effort to ban red light cameras stopped in Texas House states that effort to ban red light
cameras in Texas died after a House lawmaker called a point of order which is a procedural tactic

2017 many bills have been filed to limit or disallow the use of red light cameras in many cities.
Individuals of communities have tried to compromise with higher ups with the exemptions of
tollways and police officers only using cameras. Many people in cities are tired of going to war

eliminating Red Light Cameras, majority of the community support the thought of having red light

Models of the Kingdom Essay
In the book Models of the Kingdom Snyder (2001) presents eight models which Christians have
used to define the kingdom of God. Snyder (2011) explains these models can clarify theological
issues and help obtain truth of the kingdom of God. However, the author also indicates, each model
has strengths and weaknesses thus one should consider three criteria when selecting a model
(Snyder, 2011). The requirements to examine when choosing a model are: is the model solidly
grounded on Scripture, is the model faithful to the character of Jesus Christ as witnessed in
Scripture, and whether the model is relevant to present age (Snyder, 2011). Moreover, as I

Teaching English As A Language Essay
INTRODUCTION
English seems to have joined this list of basic skills. Quite simply, its function and place in the
curriculum is no longer that of foreign language and this is bringing about profound changes in
who is learning English, their motives for learning it and their needs as learners. (Graddol, D, page
72)
If a command of English is almost normal, the value of speaking traditional languages is increasing
in particular for native speakers of English.
The slogan English is not enough applies as strongly to native speakers of English as for those
who speak it as a second language. We are now nearing the end of the period where native speakers
can bask in their privileged knowledge of the global lingua franca (Graddol 2006:118)
English is used extremely widely today among speakers who have acquired it as a language for use
with foreigner, rather than in their own schools, government bodies and so on.
The role of education in school is now seen as to provide the generic skills needed to acquire new
knowledge and specialist skills in the future: learning how to learn. It is true that mandarin Chinese
and Spanish have more native speakers, but at the present they have neither the global sway nor the
multifunctional use that characterizes English today.
Graddol (2006:62) also states that English is no longer the only show in town . It is convenient for
many learners have few grammatical endings and vocabulary derived from both Romance and
Germanic root, but it is

Insulin is a hormone that allows the body to store glucose. Diabetes is a disease state that results
from the body not able to use insulin or the body cannot produce enough insulin. Since there is
lack of insulin in a diabetic, glucose is not able to be stored. This means that glucose remains in
the body and draws water out of cells causing dehydration. Additionally, the kidneys cannot
reabsorb excess glucose and it spills into urine causing an osmotic effect. The above problems
mentioned lead to excessive thirst and excessive urination. In a diabetic, glucose is not able to be
used as a fuel source so fatty acids and proteins are used instead. This leads to weight loss, hunger,
and a loss of energy. Biochemistry did a great job at teaching us very relevant material about
pharmacy. As pharmacists, we dispense a lot of vitamins so it is important to know why patients
are taking them. It is also important to be able to educate them if they have any questions. This
goes for diabetic patients as well. Knowing how the disease works and being able to explain it to
patients is something that we have to know as pharmacists. We must be able to answer a patient s
questions about their diabetes and symptoms if they have any.

Expenses that both gas and electric cars have are tires, brakes, and windshield wipes. However,
vehicle maintenance costs can rack up over the lifespan of a car, especially with ICEs (internal

car. Add in changing oil, engine coolant, and other miscellaneous fluids the money can add up
very quickly over time. As for electric vehicles, they don t have these expenses. Although, they
are not without expenses. For example, a new battery could cost a significant amount of money to
replace, but with these cars mostly being very new and under warranty this would not be an issue
the owner would have to worry about paying for. Electric cars, even with the proposed risk of

DEFLATION, AND BY COMPARING THEIR ECONOMIC EFFECTS CONSIDER HOW BOTH
CAN AFFECT THE CORPORATE SECTOR.
The essay will describe causes of inflation and deflation and explain how they can affect the
corporate sector.
1. INTRODUCTION DEFINITION OF INFLATIONAND DEFLATION
Inflation is a process in which the price level is rising and money is losing value. (Parkin, Powell,
Matthews p654)
Inflation tends to rise when at the current price level, demand for goods and services in the
economy are greater than economy s ability to produce goods and services.

As a respond to that workers demand pay increase and with higher cost business need to increase
its prices again В–that is called cost push inflation spiral.
Cost push inflation usually leads to a slower growth of company profits which can then feed
through into business investment decisions.
An increase in output prices, such as rise in wage rates or the cost of raw materials, increases firm
s costs. With higher costs, firms are less able to make profit. Some firms exit the market and, as a
result, aggregate supply is less and shifts to the left. The macroeconomic equilibrium changes, with
input prices push up inflation across the economy.
Cost push inflation usually leads to a slower growth of company profits which can then feed
through into business investment decisions.
THE ECONOMICS EFFECTS OF INFLATION AND DEFLATION
Inflation is costly when it is unanticipated because it redistributes income and wealth and creates
inefficiency in the economy.
(Parkin,Powell,Matthews p676)
There is widespread agreement that high and volatile inflation can be damaging both to individual
businesses and consumers and also to the economy as a whole.
However, economists disagree about the relative seriousness of inflation. The revision notes below
cover some of the main economic and social costs associated with persistent inflation in goods and

In government with all different religions on the leaders table, many arguments will come to, as
with different religions come different values. For example, the Muslims would more than
likely suggest that having more than one wife is not considered bigamy and would make it law
that one could have more than one. The Christians would go against that, as they believe that
only one wife is godly, and it would be extremely hard for a compromise to be made. As a single
religion would be ideal for an amalgamation of countries to cooperate, and it would be impossible
to convert everyone to any one religion, then religion is one big obstacle in the way of national
unity.
Another issue, which is present, is the fact that in the different countries, different languages and
dialects of languages are spoken. A language barrier is a serious impediment to the success of
national unity. If proper communication cannot go on, then proper conclusions cannot be made,
and any progress politically is extremely slow. Also, the people will not feel a sense of Caribbean
unity, if they cannot understand or relate to their other Caribbean residents. Lots of segregation of
language will occur if national unity was achieved, and that would deceive the whole idea of unity.
With many different cultures and religions, come many different festivals and bank

In the wake of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, former President George W. Bush gave a
speech that resonated with millions of people. America was targeted for attack because we re
the brightest beacon for freedom and opportunity in the world, said Bush. This rhetoric became
a popular opinion which still lasts today. However, it is misleading. The true events that
produced the 9/11 attacks are not realized by most Americans. In reality, the September 11th
terrorist attacks were a product of the history of U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East,
particularly regarding the covert operations enacted during the Soviet occupation of
Afghanistan. To understand the complicated sequence of events that led to 9/11, one first must
understand how United States foreign policy is made and enacted. U.S. foreign policy is largely
made by a very select group of officials, including the President. This is referred to as the deep
state . The deep state is the idea of a government within the government that enforces federal
actions and has the ability to override public policy. No one is elected for the position, and there
are certainly no checks and balances. These actions include covert operations, which are secret
operations that may even be illegal. The illegality of these operations and the entire organization

Many of the mid status non prisoner doctors conducted research to benefit the Nazi military
effort. Research on altitude, sea water, and mustard gas was conducted to help increase the

required to either suspend, or redefine their moral code, to serve their higher purpose of careerism.
The first group of these experiments, the high altitude experiments, were done under the
supervision of Dr. Sigmund Rascher, an SS doctor at the Dachau camp. High altitude research
duplicated the atmospheric conditions a German pilot might encounter in combat when falling
great distances through space without a parachute and source of oxygen. Altitude experiments
were carried out by locking the prisoner in an airtight, low pressure chamber, then simulating high

Emergency Medicine Personal Statement
Throughout the majority of my life, I had dreams of becoming an attorney and did not consider
medicine as a profession until much later in my academic career. I had previously pictured
myself pursuing a career in intellectual property rights and hoped to become a patent attorney,
given my interest in the scientific field. My interest in patent law led me to take science courses
that piqued my curiosity. I soon found myself involved in undergraduate laboratory research,
focused on discovering new drugs to treat chronic pain syndromes while preventing drug
tolerance and limiting the side effects of conventionally used narcotic pain medications. During
my last year of college, I was accepted into law school, however I ultimately did not feel that I
was truly pursuing my passion and decided to withdraw my acceptance. I then found myself with
a college degree and an unclear direction in life, unsure of what new career I wanted to pursue.
Shortly after graduating, I discovered a medical scribe vacancy in my hometown s Emergency

Striving For a More Peaceful World
I found this week s readings interesting and very thought provoking, although I was particularly
disturbed by Original Child Bomb by Thomas Merton. I believe this was probably Merton s
intended response to this poem. If nothing else, it certainly gets the reader thinking and hopefully
questioning our actions as a nation.
I think Haidt s definition of moral systems is an interesting one and one which I believe would help
reconcile conflicts between religious morality and secular morality, at least on the surface. If, as a
human group, people viewed morality in this way (values, practices, institutions, psychological
mechanisms used to make social life possible), I believe we might recognize the commonalities

Another idea presented in this week s readings which I found compelling was the brief
discussions on technology and the impact this has on our sense of morality. Merton obviously
speaks about technology to great lengths in his poem about the atomic bomb. In this piece
Merton seems to take the position that technological advances are not always a good thing. In
many ways, I would agree with Merton, especially when it comes to technological advances in
weaponry. I believe, as I think Merton does as well, that many of these advances allow us as a
species to dehumanize various groups and therefore enable us to destroy them with little conscious
thought to the moral implications this destruction has. On the other hand, Haidt takes a different
approach at the end of his article, The New Synthesis in Moral Psychology. He states that with
technological advances we become more aware of people in the rest of the world, not only aware
of their achievements but also of their tragedies. As this happens, our concern for others expands
and we increasingly want peace, decency, and cooperation to prevail in other groups, and in the
human group as well. (Haidt, pg. 1001) I found this statement particularly interesting because, like
many others, I often assume that rather than uniting us as a human species, technology often
isolates us and we become more disconnected from our immediate groups as well as our wider
groups. I often,

Burial Rituals of Native American Culture
At some point in our lives, we all come to realize that death is a part of life. Cultural diversity
provides a wide variety of lifestyles and traditions for each of the unique groups of people in our
world. Within these different cultures, the rituals associated with death and burial can also be
uniquely diverse. Many consider ritualistic traditions that differ from their own to be somewhat
strange and often perceive them as unnatural. A prime example would be the burial rituals of the
Native American people. Leslie Marmon Silko s story entitled The Man to Send Rain Clouds

The feather tied to his hair is a prayer feather and the painting of the face is to ensure that he will

said to provide the dead with nourishment on their journey to the next world. The pollen is
representative of the earth s renewal from the rainclouds that will be sent back by the spirit of

the body of the deceased and is thought to provide a way for the spirit to be released into the

of reaching the next life may vary from tribe to tribe. They traditionally believe that death is a
part of a natural cycle in which their spirits are transported back and forth between this world and
the spirit world so that they can bring renewal and new life when they return. Most consider this
transition to be an honor or privilege since it will ensure the survival of their people. In Native
American culture, it is believed that neglect of tribal rituals can result in death and sickness, because

The next part of the digestive system is the __small intestine__, which is a long, windy and thin
tube that snakes its way around the lower part of your belly. Here the food is mixed with bile
and other enzymes, which are created by the liver and pancreas, to break down the molecules in
the food even further. Once the food has been turned into glucose, those molecules are absorbed

The Negative Effects Of Fast Food Obesity And Its Effects...
In recent years companies have begun to target children in advertising more and more frequently.
There is a controversy surrounding the topic of whether or not children are critical consumers who
can defend themselves; or whether they are too innocent and impressionable to understand the
subliminal messages in advertising. Companies defend their roles in influencing children on the
ground that they personally believe that children can differentiate the truth of reality compared to
fantasy in advertising. That if that is not the case then it is up to parents to properly teach the
understanding of advertising; that it is not the advertiser s job. However substantial research
reveals evidence that states children are negatively affected by the influence of advertising and
media. They learn about the kind of food to eat through food advertisements, the image society want
them to have though clothing ads, and the genderroles they will partake in from the distinguishing
traits of toys. In the last decade the rate of obesity has risen drastically, many believe this is due to
the increase in fast food advertisements infiltrated worldwide to children of a young age. Obesity in
preschool children has risen, with approximately 20% of children today overweight. In today s
society children spend a substantial amount of time on computers, on their phones, and watching
television. While there are indeed some healthy food advertisements, Rose Gregory in the article

The case study by Hasson et al. (2007) advises that employees could contact their supervisor or
manager without censor or retaliation (p.3). The additions of the hotline and ethics officer were
supposed to be encouraged. However, employees bypassing the hotline and reporting process
showed evidence of passive group traits. Engleberg and Wynn state that when group members lack
confidence, they will follow directions regardless of whether they go against their own judgment,
and they also experience high stress levels with group communication (p. 68). Harry Mart,
Galvatrens COO who was first informed about the possible misconducts, didn t act as a
responsible leader. Instead of taking Mike Fields message seriously, he ignored his message.
According to Engleberg and Wynn (2007), effective leaders who are proactive listeners don t wait
for disputes to escalate into destructive conflict; they intervene at the slightest hint of hostility
(p.195). Harry Mart s reaction to Mike Fields message also indicates that the changes brought under
new management to advance the company s procedures and to prevent misconducts and conflicts
didn t transmit effectively to the company s leadership. the new leadership, the company was
transforming to adopt an open door system that encouraged employees to raise their concerns to
their superiors. However, Harry Mart s disregard for Mike Fields concern indicates that the

Red Scarf Girl Analysis
What would happen if defying the government could result in death? In the memoir Red Scarf Girl,
Ji li describes how everybody had dutifully followed Chairman Mao and took action in helping the
Communist Party. On the other hand, others flouted the Party. During the events of the Cultural
Revolution, Ji li Jianghas self conflicts about her true beliefs. Ji li once believed in the kindness of
the Communist Party and had confidence that the Cultural Revolutionwould benefit the fate of
China. However, Ji li s beliefs soon change from following the footsteps of Chairman Mao to going
against the Cultural Revolution for the sake of others.
Ji li, similar to the rest of the world, believed in the kindness of the Communist Party. She
believed that it would summon everlasting peace in the world. In fact, Ji li was one of many
proud supporters. Heaven and earth are great, but greater still is the kindness of the Communist
Party; father and mother are dear, but dearer still is Chairman Mao. (p4) When Ji li says this, it
conveys that she was in agreement with the Party and considered Chairman Mao to be more
cherished than her parents. Because of this, it also hints that she is more likely to take Chairman s
Mao side and not her own parents side.
As the story goes along, Ji li is verbally attacked due to her class status in the Cultural Revolution.
Ji li begins to doubt the kindness of the Communist Party. If he hadn t been a landlord, none of this
would have

Similarities Between Ancient Greece And China Essay
1. Using three civilizations as examples, describe the concept of the Axial Age The concept of
axial age was introduced into the sphere of philosophical knowledge by German existentialist
philosopher Karl Jaspers for characterizing the period of ancient history during about the 8th to the
3rd century BC. In this period of time we have developed a fundamentally new religious beliefs and
doctrines that promoted human and cultural values of the era. Jaspers described the Axial Age as
an interregnum between two ages of great empire, a pause for liberty, a deep breath bringing the
most lucid consciousness. Jaspers argued that during the Axial Age, the spiritual foundations of
humanity were laid simultaneously and independently in China, India, Persia, Judea and Greece.
And these are the foundations upon which humanity still subsists today. Consider, for example
Greece, India and China. Ancient Greece up to the 6th century BC was on a par with other
civilizations by the level of spiritual development. Hellenic culture range was one of those, whose
coordinate system covers the problems of family, God, nature and Eros. As a general rule, the
mentality of this culture consisted the two vectors Apollonian and Dionysian. Dionysian beginning
was aimed at the satisfaction of the instinctual needs, as opposed to the Apollonian, whose essence
consisted of creative and scientific elements. The widespread fall of the monarchy and the
actualization role of the nation brought Hellenic

This quote from Bill Nye illustrates the serious nature of climate change. Climate change is the most serious issue that is plaguing the world. Global temperatures have been increasing in recent years and it is clear that our climate is changing. Climate changeis the change of temperature of our environment. A majority of scientists suspect that humans are causing climate change by emitting CO2 into the atmosphere which creates a greenhouse effect and warms the planet. This could be disastrous for cities that are near the water. Business Insider states, Scientists have identified 414 towns and cities in the United States that are guaranteed to eventually be underwater (Sherlock). Climate change will not only be disastrous for people who live above ground, but also sea life that lives in the ocean. As CO2 concentrations increase in the atmosphere, larger quantities of CO2 becomes dissolved into the oceans. This creates carbonic acid in the oceans and makes the ocean more acidic. The increased acidity of the oceans is known as ocean acidification. According to the Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory, the pH of surface ocean waters has fallen by 0.1 pH units. Since the pH scale is logarithmic, this change represents approximately a 30 percent increase in acidity (Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory). Shellfish and coral cannot withstand a large increase in acidity and this causes coral reefs to become bleached. Coral dies when the acidity becomes too high and this causes the rest of the reef to die along with it. Scientific American states, growth and calcification of massive Porites in the Great Barrier Reef are already declining and are doing so at a rate unprecedented in coral records reaching back 400 years (Biello). • 6. How Does Levi Characterize Nietzsche s Sickness In Primo Levi s The Drowned And The Saved, his analysis of the Holocaust had conclusions and assumptions that resonated with the philosophy of Nietzsche. More precisely, points made by Levi can be drawn back to Nietzsche s sickness , slave morality and the role of the ascetic priest. Although Levi is thorough to acknowledge the ideas of Nietzsche in his writing, he fails to fully grasp how Nietzschean philosophy could view these events. First, I would like to identify the parallels to Nietzsche s sickness . In chapter 5, Useless Violence , Levi concludes that the inhuman Nazi hierarchy spread its inhumanity from the top to all aspects of its regime (Levi pg 112). Along these lines he acknowledges that this inhumanity spreads downwards ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, in the case of the Third Reich, Hitler gave his followers the Jewish as a scapegoat to their problems. To Nietzschean philosophy Hitler is equivalent to the ascetic priest who redirects the public s ressentiment to the Jewish. It s important to note that ressentiment also built in the Lagers but through the systemized degradation employed by the Hitler, it was redirected amongst the prisoners. Nietzsche would see this in the Kapos and SS men, as they redirected the prisoners ressentiment onto other prisoners due to prisoner on prisoner abuse. Furthermore, the self deceptive aspect of slave morality can be seen in Levi s work. When Levi comments on the interrogations of Nazis after the war, he examines the justifications made by the accused (Levi pg 27). This asserts that the accused relied on self deception as a way to see their acts as just. This parallels to the self deception in slave morality as the weak see themselves as strong by adjusting their realities just as the Nazis. Lastly, Levi remarks rather negatively of Nietzsche. He notes that Nietzsche s philosophy led to his morals becoming removed from the morality common to all time causing him to lose touch with reality (Levi pg 106, 107). He also reflects on the fact that Nietzsche never desired the suffering of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Charter Schools Vs. Public Schools At the foundation of the American public school system is the belief that every child deserves a quality education. To this end, the public school system in America has undergone many reforms. One of which has been charter schools. Charter schools are independent public schools of choice working under the auspices of a charter and not governed by the board of education. The charter can be written by parents, teachers, school administrators, community leaders, educational businesses, etc. It determines the school s guiding principles, management and accountability systems. The state approves the charter and provides funding for the school. Families choose these schools for their children. ( Resistance Hinders Success, 2004) Charter schools differ from traditional public schools on three basic principles: accountability, choice and autonomy. Charter schools are held accountable for their ability to educate students, management of finances and handle operations. If they do not meet the guidelines established by the charter they are closed. They give families a choice as to what school their children will attend. Finally, charter schools have more autonomy than traditional public schools. They are able to make their own decisions regarding curriculum and school governance and can focus on academic achievement instead of bureaucracy. ( Resistance Hinders Success, 2004) Ray Budde first introduced the idea of charter schools in the United States in 1974. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. The Psychology of The Gambler Essay The Psychology of The Gambler In Fyodor Dostoyevsky s The Gambler, we are presented with a novel whose protagonist is what we would call today a problem gambler. The gambling mania of the story s hero, Alexei Ivanovitch, is a mirror of Dostoyevsky s own gambling compulsion. The heroine, Polina Alexandrovna, represents a woman Dostoyevsky had as a real lover. Polina is the stepdaughter of the General, who Alexei works for as a servant. The General shows paranoia over gambling from the outset of the story. He censures Alexei with respect to his care of the children, I suppose you would like to take them to the Casino to play roulette? How, for instance, is it worse than trade? True, out of a hundred persons, only once can win; yet what business is that of yours or mine? (Dostoyevsky 8). When it comes to writers and writing, there is an old maxim that is often repeated, Write what you know. Dostoyevsky seems to have taken this advice to heart when it comes to his own writing. For the gambler is based on a real love affair had by the author as well as being a first hand account of the behaviors and psyches of the addicted gambler (which he was for a period of time). As Christine McKay (2) points out, The Gambler is based on Dostoyevsky s love affair with Apollinaria Suslova as well as his frequent casino visits to play roulette, which he began playing in 1863, at a time when he was extremely poor. He experienced first hand the excesses of gambling so aptly described in The Gambler. • 11. A Crucifixion Outside The City Of Jerusalem This painting depicts a crucifixion outside the city of Jerusalem, discernible by the centrally planned church and rounded red rotunda in the background of the city. Rounded structures that resemble towers align the walls of the city, another definitive element of the biblical city. Although the painting clearly represents an idealized Jerusalem, it emulates a contemporary European town of the Northern Renaissance age, with Gothic architecture and what resembles shops at the front of the city. The painter also depicts the mountainous terrain of Jerusalem, but portrays greenery that the actual desert city would not have. The contemporary background makes the painting less abstract and more relatable to the viewer. The overall composition of the painting is naturalistic: emphasized by the light and shadow on the figures, the use of three dimensions, and the additional details in the clothes of the figures. The body on the cross demonstrates the most amount of modeling. The face and legs of the person are covered by shadow, while the light hits the left side of the body at the chest the most. Also, there is an attention to showcasing three dimensions: the objects towards the back of the painting get smaller, while the objects in the front are larger. The three dimensions frame the picture, and create a sense of directly looking into the scene from a front viewer. Lastly, the folding and drapery of the clothing accentuate the naturalism of the painting by looking similar to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Analysis Of An Occurrence At Owl Creek Bridge An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge by Ambrose Bierce has the audience feeling multiple emotions such as shocked and on the edge of their seat from start to finish. Peyton Farquhar is a plantation owner is his mid thirties. Farquhar was up for execution by hanging from an Alabama railroad bridge the Civil War because a Federal scout betrayed him. Bierce could mislead the readers thinking that Peyton Farquhar, was escaping from being hung when in fact it was just is imagination. Bierce engages a great use of characterization in how he describes the characters throughout the story and timing details, to have the audience sitting on the edge of their seats and having a twist that no one was expecting. An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridgesucceeds in misleading the readers by the way Bierce represents the timing between the events that go on. In section III, there are a lot of details that serve a purpose in having the audience believing that he is escaping. When reading The water, the banks, the forests, the now distant bridge, fort, and men, all were commingled and blurred it allows the authors to picture him running far away from the bridge like he was making his elaborate escape (Bierce). It was as if he finally broke away from the soldier and that he was going to be saved. The political cartoon depicts President Obama playing golf. I chose this cartoon for many different reasons and I feel this relates to how I feel about the current politics. I will show how this cartoon applies to the current situation the government is facing. The cartoon depicts President Obama holding a baseball bat trying to putt a golf ball into the hole marked with a black flag which has the word economy printed on it. There are many balls surrounding the hole on the green. Behind President Obama is a large golf bag almost larger than he is. The golf bag carries the title obamanomics and behind the bag in the distance are spectators watching him. The reference of president Obama golfing comes after last weekend when he and John Boenher, the current speaker of the house, went golfing to discuss the current state of the economy and to work on a bipartisan solution to the problem. The economy has become the most important political topic in our current culture. In the cartoon we see many people watching as president Obama putts. This shows the interest in president Obama being able to fix the economy and how important his solutions to the economy will be to our nation. • 23. Analysis Of Esters Lab Report PREPARING ESTERS INTRODUCTION An ester is an organic compound where the hydrogen in the compound s carboxyl group is replaced with a hydrocarbon group. Esters are derived from carboxylic acids and (usually) an alcohol (Helmensine A, 2017). The reaction required to produce an esteris called esterification. Esterification is the reaction in which a Carboxylic acid combines with an alcohol in the presence of a catalyst (commonly concentrated sulphuric acid) to form an ester (Esterification, 2017). This is an example of a general class of reactions called condensations. Esters are common in our everyday lives. Esters are colourless, volatile liquids with pleasant aromas and create the fragrances and flavours of many flowers and fruits (Organic Chemistry Life, 2013). Esters are also excellent solvents for organic compounds. Sunburns lotions, nail polish removers, plasticisers and glues use esters as solvents (Veerenda, 2017). The aim of this experiment was to investigate different reactions between a range of alcohols and carboxylic acids to produce a variety of esters of different odours and discover how they can be used commercially in household products. MATERIALS METHODS The experiment was divided into three parts. Firstly, to record the aroma of each alcohol and carboxylic acid that would be used in the experiment. Secondly, to prepare five different esters and record the results. Finally, reporting the balanced equations for each of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

However, the author also indicates, each model has strengths and weaknesses thus one should consider three criteria when selecting a model (Snyder, 2011). • 26. Teaching English As A Language Essay INTRODUCTION English seems to have joined this list of basic skills. Quite simply, its function and place in the curriculum is no longer that of foreign language and this is bringing about profound changes in who is learning English, their motives for learning it and their needs as learners. (Graddol, D, page 72) If a command of English is almost normal, the value of speaking traditional languages is increasing in particular for native speakers of English. The slogan English is not enough applies as strongly to native speakers of English as for those who speak it as a second language. We are now nearing the end of the period where native speakers can bask in their privileged knowledge of the global lingua franca (Graddol 2006:118) English is used extremely widely today among speakers who have acquired it as a language for use with foreigner, rather than in their own schools, government bodies and so on. The role of education in school is now seen as to provide the generic skills needed to acquire new knowledge and specialist skills in the future: learning how to learn. It is true that mandarin Chinese and Spanish have more native speakers, but at the present they have neither the global sway nor the multifunctional use that characterizes English today. Diabetes is a disease state that results from the body not able to use insulin or the body cannot produce enough insulin. Since there is lack of insulin in a diabetic, glucose is not able to be stored. This means that glucose remains in the body and draws water out of cells causing dehydration. Additionally, the kidneys cannot reabsorb excess glucose and it spills into urine causing an osmotic effect. The above problems mentioned lead to excessive thirst and excessive urination. In a diabetic, glucose is not able to be used as a fuel source so fatty acids and proteins are used instead. This leads to weight loss, hunger, and a loss of energy. As a single religion would be ideal for an amalgamation of countries to cooperate, and it would be impossible to convert everyone to any one religion, then religion is one big obstacle in the way of national unity. Another issue, which is present, is the fact that in the different countries, different languages and dialects of languages are spoken. I believe this was probably Merton s intended response to this poem. If nothing else, it certainly gets the reader thinking and hopefully questioning our actions as a nation. I think Haidt s definition of moral systems is an interesting one and one which I believe would help reconcile conflicts between religious morality and secular morality, at least on the surface. Another idea presented in this week s readings which I found compelling was the brief discussions on technology and the impact this has on our sense of morality. Merton obviously speaks about technology to great lengths in his poem about the atomic bomb. In this piece Merton seems to take the position that technological advances are not always a good thing. In many ways, I would agree with Merton, especially when it comes to technological advances in weaponry. I believe, as I think Merton does as well, that many of these advances allow us as a species to dehumanize various groups and therefore enable us to destroy them with little conscious thought to the moral implications this destruction has. On the other hand, Haidt takes a different approach at the end of his article, The New Synthesis in Moral Psychology. He states that with technological advances we become more aware of people in the rest of the world, not only aware of their achievements but also of their tragedies. As this happens, our concern for others expands and we increasingly want peace, decency, and cooperation to prevail in other groups, and in the human group as well.
