  1. UX is not just digital – can also be applied to service design Sought feedback from clients, staff, students to inform the design of the space. We have applied UCD process to Interaction Lab – I will explain how Whilst a lot of this may look and sound straightforward that’s the point of good design. Show of hands - Who has been to the Interaction Lab before? If you haven’t there will be lab tours towards the end of this evenings event. ----- Whilst most people understand how user centred design and user experience related to the design of digital products. It’s not always apparent how the same thinking can be applied to a service. In the 3 years since I began managing City Interaction Lab a lot of thought has gone into the design of the space and the visitor experience. Quite a few people have asked me recently what is needed from a user testing facility. I’d like to talk you through the decisions I’ve made to help you understand what’s needed from a user testing facility. To provide guidance on what to consider when hiring a usability lab. To provide useful insights into the set-up and running of a usability lab.
  2. Introduce the Lab City Interaction Lab are a UX Consultancy based at City University London History – opened in 2003 – lab hire to full consultancy and training offering Elaborate on service offerings Structure of lab Types of projects – Orchard, Virgin, Yotel, CRUK Introduce me 6 years commercial UX experience Managing lab for 3 years. Worked at Newham Council, we are London, System Concepts Worked on projects for BBC, Samsung, O2
  3. More and more UX work is taking place in the field – however labs are still very important Who has hired a user testing facility before? Who has set-up a user testing facility before? This is for you. Dedicated suite of 3 rooms, with up to date technology Will start by focussing on our testing facilities
  4. Elaborate on slide Talk through guerrilla testing and why lab testing is still important Testing Space More than just a PC in a broom cupboard Branding – have banner stand behind participant so our logo is in every session video. Technical set-up Duel monitor / keyboard mouse set-up so facilitator doesn’t have to lean over participant and can troubleshoot Wired network connection Wired AV Set-up (running parallel to recording solution) Have spares!! The trouble with wireless keyboards / mice Screen resolution – wide monitors versus square monitors Desktop is better than laptop as can include HD Capture cards and can be upgraded. Also need to ensure you have the latest versions of accessibility software, plus one version behind.
  5. Elaborate on slides Talk through image Testing Space Can you test mobile? Do they provide wireless mirroring of the device screen? Have chargers near by Ensure you turn off notifications Technical set-up Local wireless network needed for mirroring Password protect mirroring, something short and memorable Recording mobile testing – mirroring plus document camera Use Airserver to mirrior iOS devices – looking into Android alternatives iPevo USB Document camera Use shield to protect from glare on the phone
  6. Testing Space Is there enough room to evaluate immersive applications (e.g. VR) Does the lab provide a domestic set-up for smart TV / console testing Can also be used to test mobile / tablet interactions in a domestic setting Technical set-up Wired AV Set-up (running parallel to recording solution) Split HDMI output from console to go to TV , observation area and HD capture card on a dedicated PC Stream player activity using a GoPro with a wide angle lens VR testing requires space to walk around and barriers to stop participants bumping into things.
  7. Observation spaces are important It’s better if stakeholders attend the sessions. Talk through two spaces and their purpose Observation spaces need to be comfortable Viewing needs to be hard wired, not reliant on software and local network Needs to be out of site from participants Ability to adjust audio would be helpful Phone to call for help
  8. Elaborate on pictures Difference between basic and premium hire Size of space depends on who needs to attend, what needs to be done Useful to be geographically close to testing room as can then give follow up questions Observation Space How many people need to observe? Would you benefit from discussion during the sessions? Do you like to workshop during sessions? Is there space for catering? Is it comfortable? Are one way mirrors worth it? Make sure observers have enough power sockets.
  9. Provide clear directions to your location on your invites Make sure reception know who is coming – both observers and participants – and know who to call If lab is far from reception ensure there is someone on hand to meet and greet Ensure that participants are kept away from the observers and any running sessions Ensure participants are offered drinks and are told where the toilet is Keep doors closed so that participants do not see observers. Make sure that catering is available and replenished throughout the day Use templates for regularly used items, such as wifi password signs and participant lists to speed things up Keep your lab away from passersby / your work space Provide guest wifi so observers can work during sessions
  10. How many people have hired a lab and found that the team have misunderstood their requirements or weren’t around when you needed them? A lab is only as good as it’s team They need to understand your project requirements and propose a suitable solution As we are an academic facility we are used to improvising (testing telepresence robot, testing a syringe, testing VR)
  11. A Lab is only as good as it’s team. Leaders /strategists – who can ensure everything happens on time and that the lab remains current with industry trends (experience lounge / pervasive lab) Every lab needs a technician on call, someone that understands the kit and can improvise if necessary Researchers – should know how to use the kit or make the time to learn it in advance, should be well prepared Also – back office staff to answer phones, meet and greet etc. If you are hiring a lab ensure you have the teams mobile numbers. If you are running the lab then make sure your phone is always charged and the volume is on. Finally You could have the best lab in the world but if the researcher you hire is no good then the equipment won’t help you and your project will have poor results. We can help! Two researchers, myself and a student or 2 students with my oversight
  12. Here is structure of a typical lab user testing project. This can all happen within a month. Timings Deliverables
