Machiavelli vs Islamic Political Thought
Machiavelli vs Islamic Political Thought Niccolo Machiavelli was a political realist. He thought
there were certain skills and characteristics needed to become a political ruler. In his work, The
Prince, Machiavelli gives advice on how to be a successful prince, or ruler. Successful is partly
based on how powerful a ruler was during his lifetime (reign), but largely based on how much the
princeaffected the lives, through laws or societal norms, of future generations. Machiavelli was
mainly interested in attaining and keeping political power. He believed people were inherently
selfish and would, by nature, not respect the law or work for the common good, without civic
virtues. The only way to В‘control these human urges was to instill... Show more content on

Regardless of how good a ruler Borgia was though, when the time came to install a new pope and
it wasn t his father, Borgia fell short and was no longer the ruler. While Machiavelli seemed to put
no stock in the role of the citizen in determining a ruler, he thought rulers could protect their power
by evoking the love of their people. But even this isn t enough all the time, because of the question
always asked by citizens of its government, what have you done for me lately. The ruler must
protect the citizens property, prosperity, family, and well being. For people to lead happy, full
lives, they must be allowed to do what they want, within the guidelines of a state. But this is a
cycle easier to maintain, than to begin. For people to do as they wish, there must be guidelines
in place, but for guidelines to be established, people have to know what they want to do and what
they are unable to do. Here is the reason governments were built in the first place. The group of
people chose someone to establish guidelines, because people wanted more than they had. This
is the real purpose of a ruler, to help establish a society. Machiavelli was consumed with rulers
having and keeping power, by whatever force necessary. This seems to contradict what he is
saying about the common good and civic virtues. If the ruler is only interested in power, what care
would he have for the people? None, it seems to me. According to Ian Johnston, The Prince was
more than just a feeble

Gold Rush Negative Effects
Thousands of people migrating west, new opportunities coming their way, heading towards the
gold found in San Francisco. After gold found in the state of California, thousands of people came
over there to mine the gold and get rich, making the Gold Rush largest migration in world history.
So many people came to Californiathat the state became the most diverse state in the United States.
Although there were positive attributes to the Gold Rush, the Gold Rush mostly had a negative
effect on America because of the harsh journey and the ruined landscape.
To begin, the rough journey to migrate west certainly negatively affected the United States of
America. While the american citizens were traveling to the west for gold, an extreme cholera
outbreak developed due to the unsanitary conditions that the migrants had to deal with (Gillon
65). These people were not at their home where they have supplies and cleaning equipment; they
were living in tents where they had no access to anything like a broom to sweep the floor. If
someone got dirty or sick, they couldn t do anything about other than wash up in the river, which
would worsen the cholera outbreak. A Native American described the scene as a solid mass of
wagons and men digging graves on each side of the river; men dying in their wagons, hallooing
and crying and cramping from cholera, women screaming and hallooing and praying (Gillon 65).
Because of the filthy conditions, many people were screaming and dying from cholera. These
people are putting up with so much pain just to get some gold, which they may not live to see.
Hence, because of the long, harsh journey with foul conditions, the Gold Rush undoubtedly
negatively impacted the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Blue Man Group: Creativity, Life and Surviving an
Economic Meltdown
1
Sometimes when we look at where Blue Man Group has gone; we just sort of scratch our heads.
And we think about how we started, basically just the three of us saying, Why don t we get bald
and blue and do stuff? Chris Wink, co founder with friends Matt Goldman and Phil Stanton
Monday evening on July 7, 2008, Chris, Matt and Phil were slumped around a conference table
littered with leftover sushi boxes, and sales and financial reports. Their CFO had just left the

They had begun a journey they never could have foretold, opening shows in Boston, Chicago,
Las Vegas, and Orlando; taking their theatrical show to audiences internationally; making albums
and staging rock concerts. An estimated 17 million people had enjoyed their shows by mid 2008,
paying $43 to $131 for the experience.4 Along the way, CMP became husbands and fathers, and
launched an educational venture called the Blue School that embodied their spirit of creativity and
collaboration.5 And they loved it all.
Before They Were Blue
In 1987, Chris, Phil and Matt found themselves in their mid 20s, sharing an apartment in New
York City, each quite different but all in search of a creative outlet. Matt had once read that life
was a succession of hitting plateaus right when you needed to meet a person or form a relationship
to move to the next level. That was our experience, he said. Phil was the relative newcomer to the
group;
Matt and Chris had a history that extended back to high school.
Matt was born into a fourth generation New York City family, his mother a writer and teacher, and
his father a documentary film maker. He attended public elementary school, which he described as a
big institution with no soul, 6 and then the Fieldston High School, a private institution. He recalled
his high school years:
I was lucky to get into Fieldston at all. My test scores were so so; I later found out I was borderline
dyslexic. But the application

How Does Hrothgar Use Figurative Language In Beowulf
Over time, the individuals within Herot have become aware of the evils and menacing conditions
that have sprung from Grendel s and his mother environment. Unfortunately, Beowulf s boastful
attitude and past war experiences with numerous creatures has led him to undermine dangers of the
lair. During Hrothgar s speech to Beowulf, Hrothgar uses figurative language, vivid imagery, and
displeasing syntax to demonstrate how Grendels environment is filled with treachery, hellish
components, and danger, creating a sense of fear and concern for Beowulf, which will allow him to
develop a humble attitude. The poem provides a description on how creatures that possess superior
qualities, similar to Beowulf, do not survive in Grendel s lair. Hrothgar uses distasteful syntax and
provides vivid examples to assert how creatures that contain superior characteristics and/or qualities
are tarnished by the menacing environment.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
His example suggests that the influx of death, horrifying creatures, and abnormal physical features
consume the superior qualities that these individuals once attained. Also, these vivid examples
depict how the menacing environment alters the mindset of individuals who possess similar
features as Beowulf, implying how strength and superiority may not be adequate enough to
survive. Hrothgar describes the appearance of Grendel s lair to Beowulf, and from his vivid
description the audience learns about unpleasant aspects of the lair. Hrothgar produces a hellish
image of the environment, by describing the location as windy, secret, and dark (Lines 545 and

Moreover, the dominant theme within Frank Herbert s Dune is the theme of ecology. Not only
did Herbert focus on environmental ecology but, he also included social, political, economic, and

Ecology is the study of the structure and dynamics of the biological processes that compose and
sustain the earth s ecosystem (Logan 52). Within the ecology article, Logan orates the basic
premises of an ecological interpretation which include that all forms of life exist in co dependent

There are Messianic symbols, paradise, rituals, and commandments. The Fremen of Arrakis
practiced a religion most commonly related to Hymn to Water which is a direct copy from the
Orange Catholic Liturgical Manual, calling for rain clouds which Arrakis had never seen. There
are five religious beliefs that were dominant within the Imperium and each had major events that
shaped their beliefs. The first was The followers of the Fourteen Sages and whose views are
expressed in the Commentaries and other literature produced by the Commision of Ecumencial
Translators (Dune 811). The second was the Bene Gesserit which denied being a religion but the
entire premise of the Bene Gesserit school was collectively a religion. The third was the agnostic
ruling class which included the Guild. These people though of religion as a mere game to keep
the populations obedient. These same people believed that all phenomena could be diminished
to unconscious explanations. The fourth is the Ancient teachings that have been collectively
gathered. An lastly the fifth being space travel. Space travel gave new ideas to Creation and the
feeling of sacred was touched by the outer dark (Dune 813). The Commentaries had a quote
about religion that is still applicable in modern day Much that was called religion carries an
unconscious attitude of hostility toward life. True religion must teach that life is filled with joys
pleasing to the eye of God, that knowledge without action is empty. All men must see that the
teaching of religion by rules and rote is largely a hoax. The proper teaching is recognized with
ease. You can know it without fail because it awakens within you that sensation that tells you this
is something you ve always known (Dune 818). One of the largest symbols of religion within the

What Is My Favorite Burger Essay
Being the son of a baker, I am constantly trying new foods and recipes. I have had anything from
turkey burgers stuffed with blue cheese, bacon, and onions to a healthy shrimp stir fry. Some
things that I eat, I dislike very much. Other things I try, I have second and even third
helpings.Trying my mom s new recipes always makes me respect good food to a higher extent.
This is why my favorite sandwich is a twist on the true American favorite, the burger. I want you to
know why this burger is the very best there is. The first thingyou need for the perfect burger is a
nicely done bun. What you need for this is a bun without sesame seeds. You also need a little bit of

This burger is no exception. The burger must also be topped with a scrumptious smoked ham
and delicious bacon. Both of these should be hot when put on the burger. The ham, since it is
smoked, does not need extensive heating which may ruin the beautiful pink color of ham. The
bacon itself should be cooked in a very specific and delicate way. It must be cooked to the point
where it is no longer flimsy, so which would render it chewy, but not overly crunchy which would
render it nearly unedible. For extra flavor, cook both of them in the same place you cooked the
burger without removing the burger grease. The next part of the burger is one of the most essential
and the easiest part. What you need is a little bit of a smooth, white swiss cheese. However, unlike
what many people like to do you should try to refrain from buying the cheapest cheese you can.
When it comes to cheese, the higher priced cheese is more expensive for a reason, and it s the
way to go. When the cheese is set between the slice of ham and the burger, you want it to melt so it
holds the two together, which is something you are not likely to get with a cheaper

It was amid a midyear break when the inverter at my place required an overhauling which was
expected by organization s arrangement. In any case, the organization lost a track of its past records
that demonstrated the third due administration. After a great deal of bothers and protests the issue
was settled. Notwithstanding, this occurrence made me end with that organization and joining
another. A large number of companies are unable to keep up the track of their administrations which
causes them a big time loss.
Each business plans to build its deal breaking its past records. Furthermore, the best way to do it
is to draw in new clients as well as to keep up them after deals. An organization that prioritizes its
customers will always be referred. The primary purpose behind the decrease of offers in an
organization is its absence of duty to give appropriate administrations to its clients. An enlisted
grumbling is here and there which is sometimes not attended by the organization which prompts
expanded grievances among the shoppers prompting decrease in the sales. Sometimes the
organization is not ready to keep up the record of the administrations of a client which prompts a
more prominent perplexity in the association. Another issue related to less customer satisfaction is
the inability to solve the problem on time.

Marketing Of A Global Economy
The concept of the sharing economy is still relatively new and many still have no clue what
sharing means. While time sharing has been around for quite a while; the sharing economy goes
beyond time sharing houses for vacations. Some have begun to share their vehicles and even
starting friendly taxi type companies that offer cheaper rides than the tradition taxi companies.
Many have embraced the sharing economy as it is found to be a great value to the consumer.
However, companies are seeing it as a serious threat to their business. The debate goes back and
forth as to whether the importance of consumer value is in fact causing the replacement of
traditional business. The biggest concern is that the sharing economy will thrive and traditional
businesses will continue to suffer the loss of customers unless they lower prices and get more
competitive. However, for some businesses sticking it out and being more competitive could
potentially lead to more financial loss than merely closing up shop. Marketing in a Global
Economy Marketing in our economy has become harder and harder as the age of technology
grows and billions of people see and ignore advertisements in every aspect of their life. It is rare
to even drive down the street without seeing some sort of advertisement these days; even if it s a
hand written picket sign offering lawn service. Business is everywhere and everyone wants in.

Killer Whales Argumentative Essay
Killer Whales look so happy when visited at places like sea world, but the question is, are they
really happy? Killer whales have been kept in captivity since 1961, and 55% of those whales
have been kept in United States captivity (Pg. 3). So is it truly possible for something so large to
be kept in a small environment, restricted in their movements, and limited in their ability to do what
nature intends, while still being happy? My answer to this question is no. I do not believe that
Killer Whalesare happy living in captivity on the basis that they are not allowed to swim freely.
They are forced into doing tricks and stunt shows, preforming for crowds and living in such small
environments which seriously decreases their health.

A supermarket like Tesco would use this technique to try and bring more customers into the store
by using smell, sight, sound and taste. They would play music to try and attract people into the

This technique influences customers to buy the products as they are usually by the tills and are
sometimes on special offer. Sales and discounts: Tesco uses this technique because it will
influence more people buy the product as it is cheaper. This is very appealing for the customer
as it provides a quick route for those who are shopping for bargains. This also keeps the
customers looking at different parts of the store as this link leads to the display of many of their
products. Sales and discounts can encourage so called trial and repeat purchases. Retailers can
use special offers such as buy one get one offers. Coupons are another way to encourage
purchases by offering discounts on products. Free gifts with purchase also encourage customers
to purchase products and increase sales. Sales whether advertised in the store, online, in
newspapers or via some other medium will help get customers into the store. Retailers can place
sales signs in window displays as an incentive for customers to shop. Store two Volkswagen car

Anne Sexton Old
In the poem Old by Anne Sexton, the narrator is presumably in a hospital setting as she says she
is afraid of needles and tired of rubber sheets , tubes , and faces that I don t know . This choice
of setting is most likely a result of Sexton s own stays in mental hospitals because of her
depression and addiction troubles. After the setting is established the narrator says that she thinks
death is starting and that is starts like a dream . Dreams are seen as a positive thing where
people experience their inner most desires. By equating death to a dream, Sexton is saying that
she sees death as a place of peace and solace from unhappiness. The suicidal tendencies expressed
in the poem as well as the narrative voice remind me of conversations

feelings of guilt, self esteem. What have I done for mommy not to want to see me? What is

p16INK4a overexpression in HPV infected human cancers and their prognostic values
The RB protein is inactivated by interaction with the high risk HPV oncoprotein E7 (Refs. 131,

releases p16INK4a from its negative feedback control, causing a paradoxical increase in the levels
of this protein, which attempts to inhibit uncontrolled cellular replication. As a consequence,
p16INK4a is overexpressed in HPV expressing tumors such as cervical cancer and head and neck

Aberrant expression of p16INK4a, either high or low, is found frequently in human cancers (Table
1). In colon cancer, two different patterns of p16INK4a overexpression have been reported. The
п¬Ѓrst pattern is related to senescence in serrated adenomas, which have malignant transformation
associated with p16INK4a downregulation (Refs. 138, 139). The second pattern is characterized
by a very low p16INK4a immunostaining in normal mucosa, with a progressively higher
expression in aberrant crypt foci, non serrated adenomas, primary carcinomas and metastatic
tumors (Ref. 87). A similar pattern was observed in skin cancer where p16INK4a expression
increases from relatively low levels in pre malignant lesions to high levels in in situ and
infiltrating carcinomas (Ref. 140). In breast cancer, p16INK4a was negative or low in normal
ductal epithelium, but a progressive increase was found in benign lesions and carcinoma (Refs. 88,
89). Increased nuclear p16INK4a protein expression compared with normal epithelium has been
reported in pre neoplastic and tumor tissues of the gallbladder (Ref. 141). Therefore, inactivation of

Ways in which Lifelong Learning can Contribute towards the...
Introduction:
In this essay, ways in which lifelong learning can contribute towards the new global culture and
new knowledge society, facts about lifelong learning and how the educator deals with the learners
will be discussed.
What is learning?
Learning is defined as obtaining a new ability or knowledge. For example: leaning to ride a bike,
learning to walk, learning a new language, and so on.
What is lifelong learning?
According to the English dictionary, lifelong learning is the use of both formal and informal
learning opportunities throughout people s lives in order to foster the continuous development and
improvement of the knowledge and skills needed for employment and personal fulfilment.
This means that lifelong learning is the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A more disciplinary way to handle a disruptive student would be to keep a list of all the student s
transgressions and then discuss these transgressions with their parents. This forms a dialogue with
the parents so that they can find out what the reason is for their child s disruptive behaviour and
therefore being able to come up with a solution to this issue.
You have to get to the roots of why each individual is acting in such a way. Usually they are
searching for attention must find a way to make sure the student can get attention for positive
behaviour. Poor behaviour should get either no attention or the kind of attention that is so negative
the student won t want it. Brad, Compton, CA
Dealing with exceptional learners (outstanding):
An exceptional learner is defined as a student with both gifts and a learning disability. This means
that the learner is either handicapped, autistic, retarded, or has some other kind of disability that
requires them to be treated and taught differently.
A school or organization is required by the law to make an effort to maintain equality in educational
opportunities and admission. Legislation in Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 forbids
discrimination on the basis of physical/sensory handicap or mental retardation.
When dealing with exceptional learners, it is imperative that the lecturer has the appropriate
educational course that would suit an

Rabbit Novella Carpenter
In Part 2 (Rabbit) Novella Carpenter learns just how precious food really is. Nico (Carpenter s
friend whom lived in a cabin in the woods) asked Carpenter to bunny sit , after her original sitter
flaked out. The idea of the bunnies was like a new drug at a party to Novella, exciting and
thrilling. Overwhelmed with the thought of learning to care for rabbits, Carpenter than hears Nico
say, You know that whatever you breed, you can eat, too, right? (104). While driving home with the
bunnies, Carpenter seemed less enthusiastic about breeding and eating them. Looking on the
brighter side, Carpenter realized the bunnies would be easier to care for than that of turkeys. One

In other words, she allowed herself to only eat natural local foods. This plan for self improvement
faced many difficulties as Carpenter under went bad breath, America s version of starvation, and
another loss of birds due to dogs. Before starting this diet, Carpenter ate everything in sight.
Enjoying all the foods she knew she wouldn t eat in a long time. By the end of the diet, Carpenter
would kill for a bag of chips. The diet showed Carpenter how hard it can be to grow all of your
food. With every rabbit she ate and every crop that failed, Carpenter realized she would have less
food to eat. Like Gollum s ring, Carpenter cared for her garden with importance. The biggest
hurdle with her diet was carbs. Carpenter had potatoes, but due to pest the plant failed to
produce. She improvised by turning dried decorative corn into cornmeal. This shows the
desperate creativity people can have when starving. Starvation also makes people preform bold
tasks. An example of Carpenter s bold behavior came when she reached over a neighbor s fence to
sell bees. The diet adventure was not always bad. Carpenter enjoyed making and bottling her own
wine, which she stomped with her own feet. The bad times weren t always about eating. Her
relationship with Bill was starting to suffer. Carpenter was not the happiest

Analysis Of Twelve Angry Men By Reginald Rose
Extended Analysis Twelve Angry Men
Justice is a concept that is crucial to a fair and just society. For hundreds of years, countries have
developed constitutions and other documents in place to form justice for those within the country.
In Twelve Angry Men by Reginald Rose, the idea of justice is bounced around by twelve men on a
jury. These men have the unthinkable decisions of whether a suspected murderer is given the
death penalty or able to walk free. The jury in Twelve Angry Men made the most just decision
they could. To understand how the decision they made was just and to explain some background,
this essay will cover a few major ideas. It will talk about how Reginald Rose included the ideas of:
reasonable doubt, being innocent until proven guilty, the jury system, and public defenders.
Twelve Angry Men touches on one of the key principles of the American criminal justicesystem.
This is the belief of the defendant being innocent until proven guilty. The idea is to give every
person a fair trial that follows the rules set forth in the constitution. In Twelve Angry Men, a
young man is on trial for the murder of his father. Many of the jurors jump to conclusions about
the defendant s guilt because of his lack of wealth and his ethnicity. Several of jurors make
comments similar to these people and kids like this are always up to no good (Rose 24). This
shows an assumption based not on the person, but on a very broad, vague, and stereotypical view.

Social Movement Literature Review
Introduction:
Throughout history, social movement organizations (SMOs) or small groups, loosely connected
by a shared purpose have created transformational change. Charles Tilly defines social movements
as a series of contentious performances, displays and campaigns, by which ordinary people make
collective claims on others (Tilly 2004:3). Examples of these movements are the Women s suffrage,
civil rights and the LGBTQ movement. Similar forces are transforming businesses, military affairs
and religion. SMOs have become an important part of society because these movements provide a
forum for grievances and demands to be heard. These movements also provide citizens an
institution outside of the traditional political system.
The purpose of this paper is twofold: 1) to better understand the potential connection between the
old and new movements and 2) determine if a certain theory, strategy, method or goal makes a
social movement more or less successful compared to others as it takes more than feelings of
frustration to persuade an individual to sacrifice time, money, relationships on these grievances. As
will be indicated in the literature review, there are several arguments concerning the success of
social movements.
Literature review:
This literature review provides an overview of the major ideas represented in the literature of social
movement theory. McAdam, McCarthy and Zald (1996) offer a framework intended to explain

Gummy Bear Hypothesis For Osmosis
Introduction:
Osmosis is a natural occurrence constantly happening within the cells of all living things. For
osmosis to occur, water molecules must move across a semipermeable membrane from an area of
low concentration to an are of high concentration. In order to understand osmosis, people must
understand the different types of concentrations that can be present within solution. One of them is
an Isotonic solution where the concentration of dissolved particles is equal to that of a cell s.
Another is a hypertonic solution where there is a higher concentration of dissolved particles then
inside the cell. And lastly there is a hypotonic solution where there are less dissolved particles
than inside the cell. As dissolved particles move to a region of lower concentration, water moves
the opposite direction as a result of there being less water in the highly concentrated region. In this
experiment, gummy bears were placed in salt water, sugar water, and tap water to find the measure
of osmosis between the solution and gummy bear.
Hypothesis:
If the gummy bear is added to the solution, then it will lose its coloring and expand.
Materials:
The materials used during the experiment included three plastic cups, three gummy bears, masking
tape, marker, balance, calculator, tray, one plastic spoon, a measurement tray, and a ruler. The
three plastic cups were used to hold the tap water, salt water, and sugar water. The masking tape
and marker were used to label each cup with the

Assimilation And The Dominant Culture
The process whereby individuals or groups of differing ethnic heritage are absorbed into the
dominant culture of a society.
As the definition states, Assimilation can be seen as a process in which ethnic groups from
different backgrounds start absorbing the dominant culture of the new country they are residing on.
This is commonly seen in any ethnic group that starts living in a new country for a long period of
time. One that I relate to is the Mexican heritage. Both my parents and family members migrated
here from Mexico. Even though they have lived here for many years, their culture and traditions
have not fully changed, however, they have change in a way that our family in Mexico view it as
different. For example, Christmas for us means

The Causes of Migraines
Migraines
Migraine, Medical condition that many people have to deal with. This is how to identify the
signs of a migraine, what a migraine simply is, what happens during a migraine attack, triggers
and how to diagnose it. The cause of a migraine could be many different things. This research
paper could help out a lot pf people who may have not yet experienced a migraine attack. A
migraine attack is one of the hardest illnesses to diagnose but a migraine could also lead to other
things more severe.
A migraine? Migraines, severe painful headaches often proceeded or accompanied by sensory
warning signs such as flashes of light, blind spots, tingling in the arms and legs, nausea, vomiting,
and increased sensitivity to light and sound. Migraine headaches result from a combination of blood
vessel enlargement and the release of chemicals from nerve fibers that coil around the blood vessel.
This then causes the sympathetic nervous system to respond with nausea, diarrhea, and vomiting.
These migraine headaches are commonly misdiagnosed as tension type headaches or sinus
headaches. During the headache, an artery enlarges that is located on the outside of the skull just
under the skin of the temple. This causes a release of chemicals that cause inflammation, pain, and
further enlargement of the artery. (http://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Migraine)
What triggers a migraine? A person physically or emotionally under stress can trigger a migraine.

Liberal, Conservative, and Socialist Ideals vs. Feminism before the 20th Century
Tales from the beyond, story one: a parent binds his baby girl s feet in China, so it will not grow
more than five to six inches because small feet in women are a sign of elegance; story two: a wife
is burned alive in India, so she can accompany her husband in death. Are these stories? No, things
like this really happened in the past. They are part of the reason that contributed to the birth of the
Women s Movement in the 19th century. This movement was also known as the Feminist
movement because its foundation came from feminism, an ideology that developed in the 19th
century, and whose main goal was to gain equality for women. The goals of the Women s... Show

They valued the stability of the political, and social structure, and therefore believed that changes
that could affect it should be gradual, and very well thought. For the feminist, this made them the
enemy since they were trying to preserve the very structure that had placed women, in the
traditional role, the feminist movement was trying to change. Feminist wanted radical change,
changes to match the progress that was going on in the world, and that was creating new roles for
women. Conservatives opposed progress; they said that if something was not broken, and it had
work fine until now, it should not be change, it should be respected, and preserve.
Religion was another aspect that created great difficulties for feminist in conservative countries.
Conservatives were very religious. They believe that man where sinful creatures, so whatever
they did could only cause harm, people that proposed any kind of big change, even if it was for
the better of the people it was the representation of the devil himself. The tradition of the church
has always placed women in the role of caretaker. Women were meant to be at home, and their
main purpose is to have children, and take care of them, so their fear of feminist was inevitable,
and there for any conservative country would make it very difficult for the women s movement to
develop.

Kafka s In The Penal Colony
Throughout this course, we have analyzed multiple legal systems in texts that involve a trial or
some form of leniency, such as the Trial of Jesus and The Apology. The texts that don t involve this,
such as the Old Testament, include some form of absolute divine punishment that defeats the need
for a judicial system altogether. With In the Penal Colony, Kafka gives us an opportunity to explore
a society in which the legal system involves absolute punishment without divine intervention, and
challenges us to think normatively about it and the effects it has on society. In the society where In
the Penal Colony is set, a unique system of justiceand punishment is used. Following the principle
that guilt is always beyond doubt, individuals accused of a crimeare not given any opportunity to
defend themselves, and are instead put to death using a torture machine (Kafka 155). This brings
up important normative questions: what does this say about the judicial system and its
effectiveness, and is this system just? On one hand, it can be perceived as unjust, as people are not
given leniency and more importantly may be convicted of crimes they did not commit. As Professor
Weiler says, The worst thing you can do is convict an innocent man. On the other hand, however, it
can be seen as the highest form of justice, as the guilty will always be purged and given no chance
at redemption. Furthermore, the nature of the punishment, a brutal public execution that steadily

Emily Dickinsons View On Religion
Everybody has a different view on religion and its existence. Emily Dickinson, an objective poet
acting as a detached observer, describes what she has seen or heard and brings her own
reflections on the things she has experienced. Objective poetry is impersonal, which allows
readers to be open to different interpretations; it allows the facts to represent themselves and not be
impacted by the individual values and predispositions of the poet. Dickinson s poem, Prayer is the
Little Implement , exemplifies a true objective piece. Emily asks how someone could reach the
heavens when Godhas denied his presence. Because God hides himself from human presence, men
fling their prayers. They fling their despairs and request into God s ear, on the

Utopia In The Truman Show
Utopia is said to be a place where a good society is created, where one can live a good life and
where power is not abused. But throughout George Orwell s Animal Farm, the reader learns that a
utopian society is in fact impossible. The reader learns this when Old Major tells of a dream he has
where everything is perfect and no humans are involved, however when the revolution occurs and
the humans are chased off the farm, the pigs become in charge and start to manipulate their power
and the other animals, proving that no matter how hard the animals try, they will never have the
good life that they want. Furthermore, in Peter Weirs the Truman Show, we see that your own utopia
can not be shaped by another being, because although being in power, Christof makes everything
as perfect as he can for Truman, Christof can never give Truman the good life he actually wants
which then leaves Truman finding his life unsatisfactory. The good life is determined by freedom
and to be able to go where you want and do what you want to do, thus proving that a utopian
society can not actually be made because if everyone could do what they want, there s no
guarantee that people would do the right thing which is why we have people in power.
Power is having the capability or qualification to do something or control something. The idea of
power is often analyzed in the Truman Show and Animal farm. In the Truman Show, Peter Weir
suggests that power can be bad and that people shouldn t have power

Cognitive Control And Social Control Essay
Adolescence is categorized by psychological changes in relation to identity, self consciousness,
and relationships with others (Sebastian, C., Burnett, Blakemore, S. J., 2008). There are two
major aspects when it comes to adolescence: cognitive control and social control. The cognitive
control focuses more on supervisory functions such as our working memory, decision making,
self consciousness, and attention distribution; while, the social control supports the individual
being more sociable, forming more complex relationships and becoming more sensitive to
acceptance and rejection by others (Steinberg, L. Morris, A. S., 2001). The adolescence period
of development begins with the onset of physiologically normal puberty, and ends when an adult
identity and behavior are accepted. According to the World Health Organization (2006), this
developmental period occurs roughly between the ages of 10 and 19 years old. For my subject, I
observed adolescent seventeen year old, Caucasian male, Dalton. Our interviews were conducted

William Wordsworth s The World Is Too Much With Us
Completely unaware? Do you notice the things that surrounds us, and the life that lives within us?
Care to much or not at all?, want it all? Or have you no love within your heart. Do you dream? Or
create? Do you see the nature all around us? Those were many of the thoughts and questions that
ran through my head when reading the poem The World Is Too Much With Us , by William
Wordsworth. Throughout the story there were three messages that stood out the most in
Wordsworth s poem, which involve love, the power to not care and be greedy, and creation within
the mind.
In the poem the writing can be taken and understood many different ways, but one thing that
stood out to me was the message of love. Now not necessarily love for one another but love for
nature was expressed throughout the poem through various ways. We have given our hearts
away, a Sordid boon! (Wordsworth, Line, 5). What William was trying to explain in just that
line was we would give our hearts away to nature at any point, because it s the love for the way
that nature is and all its beauty and peace. It can so easily capture our hearts to love nature and
all it has to offer. Furthermore, Wordsworth, talks a lot and describes a lot about what nature does.
For instance. He talks about how the sea is at night time, how the wind has a sort of howl to it, and
that also really shows the love for nature that is expressed in this poem. And even the love that the
narrator has for nature and its beauty.

Essay on Gran Torino and The Right Stuff
Getting old and aging are things that have become difficult points for many and despite the
negative representation of the elderly in film, they do serve a purpose. On the big screen we
continue to see many underpinnings of ageist assumptions when in fact many of the characters are
strong figures that Still have the Right Stuff . Clint Eastwood dispels that myth and several
significant scenes epitomize this concept in the movie hit Gran Torino (2008). Gran Torino (2008)

of racism and bigotry. We see an older man, Walt Kowalski (Eastwood) who has lost his wife and

The physical signs of aging include a decline in flexibility and endurance in the first incident
described below. In the second meeting with Sue, his heroism and powerful strength and
persona is appreciated. He is no longer seen as a feeble old man. As an initiation, Thao is asked
to steal Walt s prized 1972 Ford Gran Torino. He botches the attempt, as Walt, rather stumblingly,
chases his out of his garage with his M1 rifle. Later, Thao s sister, Sue (Ahney Her) is set upon
by some stereotypically predatory young black man and Walt, brandishing a pistol, rescues her.
Another scene in which the character of Walt deals with the prejudices of ageist yet remains in
control is when his son and daughter in law gift him a telephone for old people with giant
buttons and numbers on it for his birthday. They also present him with a gopher to help him pick
up things on the ground more easily and retirement brochures. These gifts would make things
easier because he worked hard his whole life. This was the last straw and he throws them out.
This reaction shows Walt had the right stuff. He was not feeble or afraid to talk back to his
children. As people age, they often accept the emotional abuse but Walt would not. Another
concept where we see Walt fighting the concept of ageist is his role to man Thao up a bit. The
elderly are often seen as no longer being valuable members of society yet they

of this action, a very tense atmosphere was generated. Jimmy under Hugh s influence, treated
Alison as a hostage from the upper social class.
Alison was utterly disgusted with such barbaric behavior. She found it outrageous to believe that
two literate people like Jimmy and Hugh, could be so ruthless, savage. Hugh decided to go
abroad. Both Jimmy and Hugh s mother came to view that Alison was responsible for Hugh s
departure. As a result, Jimmy flares to dislike his wife. He also felt that she adopted an indifferent
attitude to his concerns and convictions; needs and necessities. He became obsessed with a sense of
betrayal.
After Hugh s migration, Jimmy and Alison took another flat. Cliff Lewis, another friend of Jimmy
came to live near them. Fortunately for them, Alison and Cliff became genuinely fond of each
other. Cliff tried his best to minimize the conflict between the married couple. But, in spite of Cliff
s determined efforts to prevent the conflict from the burst, Jimmy s insults deliberately become
more and more unbearable. Whatever the subject under

Essay about Early American Literature
Early American Literature (1620 1820)
In the first half of the 17th century the New World found two groups of people
colonizing. The first group, the Puritans, had left England after years of exile due to
their lack of faith in the Church of England. With the reading and understanding of the
Bible almost completely laid in the hands of the preacher, the congregation was forced
to believe all the words that the preacher said. This all came to an end with John
Calvin.
His ideas were that God likes certain people better than others and those chosen
ones would get more land and more money. This idea took off with the Puritans as they
seeked religious freedom, a chance to start new churches ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

All education was basedon religion and through that there was no questioning of God.
Along with this, their faith was based of that of the super natural world. They could
not see God, but saw him through thingslike a prosperous harvest or a winter blizzard,
both of these in reaction to actions taken by the Puritans.
With this lack of deductive reasoning the Puritans would find themselves thinking
about things done wrong if there was a life threatening winter blizzard or reflect the
things that were done right in the event of a bountiful harvest. In my eyes the Putians
were did not just leave England in search of religious freedom, they were casually asked
to leave the country and were used to colonize land that England was interested in.
Much like religious cults of today, they were against major religious beliefs of the
church and looked upon as radicals in their beliefs. Then, coming out, beheld a
space the flame consume my dwelling place. And when I could no longer look, I blest His
name that gave and took. A quote of this nature in modern day society would be
followed by the thought of radical nature in the person saying it. Things may have
changed as far as social acceptance goes, but I see the Puritans as outcasts of the
society in England.

Establishment Of The Environmental Protection Agency
Zoe Brown Mrs. Helms English III Honors 7 November 2014 Establishment of the
Environmental Protection Agency Environmental disasters during the 1960s in the United States
had significant impacts on both the human and sea life populations. During the New York
weather inversion of 1965, over 80 people died from the man made smog over the four day
period. In the Santa Barbara oil spill of 1969, over 3,700 sea birds were killed, along with
countless other forms of marine life. The nuclear reactor meltdown in Idaho in 1961 was the only
United States incident by that time that resulted in immediate fatalities, in which three operators
were killed ( Learn the Issues ). Cleveland, Ohio s Cuyahoga River sustained 13 reported fires,

On April 22nd, 1970, the American public gathered in the streets to celebrate clean air, water, and
land. Congressmen in Washington D.C. halted their activities to be their constituents; however, the
Nixon administration was laboring at what would become the capstone of environmental policy, the
EPA. While Earth Day was the launch of environmentalism in the modern sense, individuals had
been combating natural resource degradation for centuries. In 1849, Henry David Thoreau
published a compilation of lectures, Walden, that would become the standard by which all
subsequent nature writings are judged. John Muir, father of the American preservationist
movement, cofounded the Sierra Club, which preserved California wild lands. Both Theodore
Roosevelt and Franklin Delano Roosevelt worked during their tenure as presidents to save the
National Park System ( Environmentalism ). After World War II, the United States birthrate
skyrocketed, and people found themselves living on the edge of parks and nature. The public began
to question whether the government was working to preserve untouched land for future
generations. When Rachel Carson published Silent Spring in 1962, the era of environmentalism
was born. This movement demanded the state not only preserve the Earth, but act to regulate and
punish those who polluted it (Farrah). The work on the pesticide poisoning of man sparked a

Jackie Robinson Hero
The world of baseball is a different place because of one brave man who fought for equality. Jack
Roosevelt Robinson is known as a hero to many people because of his bravery and courage to
fight for what s right. Because of his courage to fight for equal rights, the challenges he faced, and
his legacy and lasting impact on the world of baseball, Jackie Robinsonis a very heroic figure.
Equal rights for baseball was a fight that Jackie fought. Accepting Rickey s offer to play with the
Royals at first, then the Dodgers, he was accepting the challenge to fight for equal rights. Branch

Many awards were given to him for his accomplishments. For example, he was the first to be
awarded rookie of the year for all of baseball, not just the National League. Therefore, the rookie
of the year award was named after Jackie in 1987. (Maddux Zito 482) This evidence suggests
that what he did to the world of baseball made a big enough impact to have an award named after
him. Next, many people were inspired by Jackie. His popularity grew with everyone. About half
of the Major League players were black by the 1970 s. Also, songs were written because of him,
a comic book was made, and a movie was created called Jackie Robinson. (Graf 3) This logically
implies that Jackie became a heroic figure and inspired everyone. Last of all, Robinson impacted
so many people that he has his own day celebrated by many. 42 is the number he wore. Today it
has been retired so nobody else in the Major Leagues can wear it except on Jackie Robinson Day.
The man who helped change the course of the game and more importunity, our country. was what
Jackie was known as. (Graf 3,4) This example demonstrates how he made a major impact on
everyone off and on the baseball field. Because of Robinson s courage, he has a lasting impact to

The Ancient Mariner
All humans have the ability to imagine anything, regardless of whether it s realistic or not. As a
result, the human imagination can go beyond one s own horizon and expand indefinitely. Samuel
Taylor Coleridge emphasizes the importance of the imagination in his poems. Therefore, in his
poem, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, he uses supernatural forces to describe the vividness of
the human imagination. When the Ancient Mariner stops the Wedding, he holds him with his
glittering eye and the wedding guest listens like a three years child. (line 15) The way the Mariner
look at the Wedding guest can conclude that the Mariner has some type of mysterious and magnetic
power that attracts people to listen to his tale. The Mariner s glittering eye also symbolizes that the
story he is about to tell is phenomenal.

that a Death? And are there two? (line 181 187) The arrival of Death and Life in Death is an
important supernatural events in the story. A ship with tattered sails that moves without wind or
tide and harbors strange skeletal figures is more than enough reason for the sailors to be perplex at
the predicament. The fear and bewilderment the sailors feel when the soul takers appear on the
ghost ship conveys that a bad omen is about to unfold.
The supernatural forces that govern the atmosphere of the story helped the Mariner survive and tell

Theme Of The Tell Tale Heart And The Monkey Paw
The night waned, and I worked hastily, but in silence. First of all I dismembered the corpse. I cut
off the head and the arms and the legs. The common theme of death is obvious in the stories, The
Tell Tale Heart, and The Monkeys Paw, but this explains just a bit of the stories. The people
involved are dealing with death for very different reasons, which capture the reader s attention. The
Tell Tale Heart and Monkey Paw stories build suspense for the audience because the stories are
based around murder and death, which the feelings of fear, reasoning, insanity, sadness, guilt and
coping are the effects.
A child s parents have made a dire mistake with wishes given to them that cause a tragedy and loss.
When two parents are given three wishes from a monkey paw, their first wish was to ask for money,
which they got what they wanted, but it cost them their only son. The mistake tore the mother
apart, So she wished her son back to life with a second wish, but when the son was at the front
door the father wished him to his grave. The death of the son is sad, but the truly suspenseful
part is when the son comes back to life with the horrific injuries all because of the wishes made
with the monkey paw. If he could only find it before the thing outside got in. A perfect fusillade
of knocks reverberated through the house, and he heard the scraping of a chair as his wife put it
down in the passage against the door. He heard the creaking of the bolt as it came slowly back,

Personal Statement Of Environmentalism In An Equivalent To...
In my opinion Environmentalism in many ways is equivalent to Feminism . Both the subjects
have been overlooked in the past by policy makers and corporations, have suffered injustice and
are fighting for their rights. Just as the world cannot progress entirely and achieve its true
potential by leaving one gender behind, in the same way we cannot achieve sustainable
development by ignoring our environment. As a young kid I didn t know what I and billion
other Indians were missing in life until I visited Singapore. I was awe struck by the efficient
public transport, less reliance on private cars for movement, vertical development, cleanliness
and high quality of life. One of the starkest differences that I noticed was how I could not tell the
rich from the poor which is so evident in India. Other thing that I observed was how the entire
city was connected seamlessly. Print media and internet have been a great influence in my life
since my childhood. Since childhood my habit of reading newspaper and magazines have widened
my world from the small space of my room. The second page of the daily newspaper highlighted the

Education benefits individual mentally, emotionally and physically by placing them in better place
than they were previously before. Everybody would agree that learning something new would take
place throughout the life. Learning style defined as A term that describes the variations among
learners in using one or more senses to understand, organize, and retain experience (Reid, 1987, p.
89). Furthermore, Felder and Henriques (1995, p. 21) explained learning styles as the ways in
which an individual characteristically acquires, retains and retrieves information . However,
different learners possess different characteristics and different preferred learning styles to perceive,
process, take in and understand information.
This paper will examine the learning style of the writer and professional teaching philosophy,
apply theories of learning to my philosophy, and provide an example of how my values and
beliefs related to teaching and learning affect my role as a health care professional.
Personal Learning style There are four main types of learning styles: auditory, kinaesthetic, reading
and writing, and visual. Each of these theories describes how learning occurs and has its own
terminology, perceptions on learning and generalities about teaching and learning. My personal
learning style uses a combination of visual, reading, writing and auditory. I prefer using pictures,

which had lyrics containing an emotional resonance that produced the best results and this was
more important than tempo and rhythm. For mental health, in Pete Cashmore s article, he says rap

Thankfully, Dr. Brookter caught the error and I fixed it. While the rest see Hip Hop/Rap music
as a black music genre that talks about money and women. But through the eyes of Rap fans and
artists alike, Rap stands for Rhythm and Poetry. It craved a tapestry of exposing social issues that
America would never shed light on. This will ensure everybody that Hip Hop/Rap is for everyone.
Throughout this survey, my educated guess on the students is whenever they listen to Hip Hop
/Rap music, it is based on how they perceive and interpret the music because most students find
ways to use Rap to express themselves. Whether the students use the music for relaxation,
workouts, or school, Rap music is for everyone who wants to hear it. But, in the survey, WCU
student surveyors say collegians listen to Rap through popularity. I realized that at WCU, college
students that listen to Rap music are split into two listening categories: lyrically and musically.
Those that listen to Rap are interested in it for the sound while the others listen to the music itself.
Rap reinvented the world of music through its exponential rhymes and explosive beats. During its
emergence in the 1980s, Rap began to evolve from party songs to socially conscious songs.
Through the 90s, Rap reached commercial status through the movies, clothes, and television. Yet,
the music has faced obscurity for having

Human Rights in EnderВґs Game by Orson Scott Card Essays
Ender s Game by Orson Scott Card is a novel that shows what would happen if the government
had too much power and has a powerful angle on inequality and child labor. My novel has taught
me a lot about inequality, as did my research. But I found out a lot about my main point; child
labor. Child labor effects everyone without them even knowing. I m sure you ve unknowingly
bought something that aids people who do these things to people. America is full of stores that
have clothing made by children, but it s not only us... maybe the things going on in Africa, where
most of the cases are coming from, need a little light shed on them. In Africa they are using kids to
cut down large trees, or in sweatshops... in actuality it s any job that could help... Show more

In over twenty five countries, many children are abducted and beaten into submission to be used
in real life wars. A very famous viral video called Kony 2012 was trying to get people to help catch
the Ugandan warlord Joseph Kony, who has kidnapped thousands of children over the past
twenty years. Child soldiers are defined as: children under the age of 18 who are recruited by state
or non state armed groups and used as fighters, cooks, suicide bombers, human shields, messengers,
spies, or even for sexual purposes. Most of the children that do get wound up in the world of child
labor, (the ones not forced or kidnapped) are doing it for family or their education. In Enders Game,
he is doing it for the world. Ender is being used as a child soldier to stop an alien race and at only
age eleven, he is a commander of his own fleet and commits genocide. This is obviously wrong on
so many levels, in real life and in the book. Someone at a young age that should be happy and
smiling is making a choice whether or not to end someone s life. The up side is there is a lot of
people trying to end this and people like the International Labor Organization are working very
hard to end all forms of child labor. There was also a walk to raise money for the benefit of child
labor. Africa is most of the organizations main focus from what I could tell. Children are supposed
to be able to be free and happy

Economic Performance And Its Impact On Financial Performance
Economic performance is whether the company strategy and its execution have contributed to the
ultimate performance. Economic performance is mainly reflected in four aspects: profitability,
operating capacity, solvency and ability to resist risks. Economic performance can be shown in the
impact of managing cost, the effect of property management, the influence of the distribution of
capitals, and the composing of the shareholders equity return rate. The standpoint of profitability
evaluation is economic added value and the rate of rise (profit). Choosing EVA in the net assets
income rate, the return on total capitals and income per share index, this evaluation of enterprise
profitability can reflect the condition of capital net income and capital gains, this is also the
development trend of enterprise performance evaluation index. Besides, sales revenue (profit)
growth rate index is used to measure enterprise growth. Operation ability can promote firms to
enhance capital management, increase the service efficiency of property and improve profitability.
The primary evaluation indexes are: stock turnover, debt receivable turnover and permanent assets
turnover. The strength of the debt paying ability is the economic and fiscal status of a company .
Moreover, it is a significant measure of business control. Primary indicators are worth debt ratio,
liquidity ratio and acid test ratio. Anti risk capacity is the ability to prevent the adverse effects of

Roe V. Wade Pros And Cons
In January of 1972, the Supreme Court made the decision to legalize abortion in the first
trimester of a pregnancy. This new decision extended the constitutional right of privacy to a
woman s right to her body. Prior to this new law, back alley illegal abortions were on the rise and
were responsible for one sixth of all pregnancy and childbirth deaths (Planned Parenthood). After
abortions became legal, safe clinics were created and women are able to safely receive the
procedures. However, the debate of overturning the court decision has been widely discussed with
a new year and new president. Pro life conservatives and pro choice liberals, both argue whether or
not a woman should have access to abortions. The Supreme Court should not overturn... Show more

Many of these states have created harder restrictions for the process of receiving an abortion. States
have tried to change the law that, requires women to receive state mandated counseling and an
ultrasound at least 18 hours before the procedure, forcing women to make two separate trips to the
clinic. It also prohibits women from choosing abortion if the fetus is diagnosed with a genetic
anomaly, and mandates that fetal tissue be cremated or buried (Huffington Post). These restrictions
not only complicate the process of an abortion but also painfully affects the women trying to obtain
them in these states. Many clinics have been forced to shut down in conservative states, forcing
many women to travel far to undergo the procedures. With harder restrictions the government
receives more control over a woman s body which again, violates the fourth amendment. In order to
protect the current ruling of Roe v Wade, the states and federal governments must continue to block
these pending laws and rule them

Analysis Of Wilfred Owen s The Soldier On The Front Line
Wilfred Owen a soldier on the front line in World war one who composes his emotions and
experiences on the battlefield into poetry. He in his writing shines a light on suffering of the
soldiers in the unpleasant environment. The poem, Dulce et decorum est starts off with giving
us an upsetting image of the troops and their conditions. They are described as Bent double, like
old beggars under sacks . Use of simile in the first line of the poem compares young men to old
beggars and reminds us of how helpless they were. Their expectations of their appearance in
clean uniforms and excitement of the war, as suggested by the propaganda, were shattered.
Distorted by the conflict, these soldiers once strong and healthy had no strength left in them.
Being labelled old beggars indicates they had nothing to live for and were in a wait to get out of
misery. Furthermore, the description of the soldiers and their unlikely comparisons in similes
does not improve. Owen writes Knock kneed, coughing like hags which suggests that the health
of these men or hags as they were being called was extremely challenged and illnesses were
taking over them. This is very effective as it shows how the men were aged and coughing like
witches. Being compared to hags which would have been very powerful back in the days meant
they were no less than women. Women at the time were considered very weak with not many
rights. They were restricted to certain jobs. Soldiers on the front line

In 1969, Davis came back the America and joined several radical civil rights organizations. She

  • 2. Machiavelli vs Islamic Political Thought Machiavelli vs Islamic Political Thought Niccolo Machiavelli was a political realist. He thought there were certain skills and characteristics needed to become a political ruler. In his work, The Prince, Machiavelli gives advice on how to be a successful prince, or ruler. Successful is partly based on how powerful a ruler was during his lifetime (reign), but largely based on how much the princeaffected the lives, through laws or societal norms, of future generations. Machiavelli was mainly interested in attaining and keeping political power. He believed people were inherently selfish and would, by nature, not respect the law or work for the common good, without civic virtues. The only way to В‘control these human urges was to instill... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Regardless of how good a ruler Borgia was though, when the time came to install a new pope and it wasn t his father, Borgia fell short and was no longer the ruler. While Machiavelli seemed to put no stock in the role of the citizen in determining a ruler, he thought rulers could protect their power by evoking the love of their people. But even this isn t enough all the time, because of the question always asked by citizens of its government, what have you done for me lately. The ruler must protect the citizens property, prosperity, family, and well being. For people to lead happy, full lives, they must be allowed to do what they want, within the guidelines of a state. But this is a cycle easier to maintain, than to begin. For people to do as they wish, there must be guidelines in place, but for guidelines to be established, people have to know what they want to do and what they are unable to do. Here is the reason governments were built in the first place. The group of people chose someone to establish guidelines, because people wanted more than they had. This is the real purpose of a ruler, to help establish a society. Machiavelli was consumed with rulers having and keeping power, by whatever force necessary. This seems to contradict what he is saying about the common good and civic virtues. If the ruler is only interested in power, what care would he have for the people? None, it seems to me. According to Ian Johnston, The Prince was more than just a feeble ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Gold Rush Negative Effects Thousands of people migrating west, new opportunities coming their way, heading towards the gold found in San Francisco. After gold found in the state of California, thousands of people came over there to mine the gold and get rich, making the Gold Rush largest migration in world history. So many people came to Californiathat the state became the most diverse state in the United States. Although there were positive attributes to the Gold Rush, the Gold Rush mostly had a negative effect on America because of the harsh journey and the ruined landscape. To begin, the rough journey to migrate west certainly negatively affected the United States of America. While the american citizens were traveling to the west for gold, an extreme cholera outbreak developed due to the unsanitary conditions that the migrants had to deal with (Gillon 65). These people were not at their home where they have supplies and cleaning equipment; they were living in tents where they had no access to anything like a broom to sweep the floor. If someone got dirty or sick, they couldn t do anything about other than wash up in the river, which would worsen the cholera outbreak. A Native American described the scene as a solid mass of wagons and men digging graves on each side of the river; men dying in their wagons, hallooing and crying and cramping from cholera, women screaming and hallooing and praying (Gillon 65). Because of the filthy conditions, many people were screaming and dying from cholera. These people are putting up with so much pain just to get some gold, which they may not live to see. Hence, because of the long, harsh journey with foul conditions, the Gold Rush undoubtedly negatively impacted the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... And we think about how we started, basically just the three of us saying, Why don t we get bald and blue and do stuff? Chris Wink, co founder with friends Matt Goldman and Phil Stanton Monday evening on July 7, 2008, Chris, Matt and Phil were slumped around a conference table littered with leftover sushi boxes, and sales and financial reports. They had begun a journey they never could have foretold, opening shows in Boston, Chicago, Las Vegas, and Orlando; taking their theatrical show to audiences internationally; making albums and staging rock concerts. An estimated 17 million people had enjoyed their shows by mid 2008, paying $43 to $131 for the experience.4 Along the way, CMP became husbands and fathers, and launched an educational venture called the Blue School that embodied their spirit of creativity and collaboration.5 And they loved it all. Before They Were Blue In 1987, Chris, Phil and Matt found themselves in their mid 20s, sharing an apartment in New York City, each quite different but all in search of a creative outlet. Matt had once read that life was a succession of hitting plateaus right when you needed to meet a person or form a relationship to move to the next level. That was our experience, he said. Phil was the relative newcomer to the group; Matt and Chris had a history that extended back to high school. Matt was born into a fourth generation New York City family, his mother a writer and teacher, and his father a documentary film maker. He attended public elementary school, which he described as a big institution with no soul, 6 and then the Fieldston High School, a private institution. He recalled his high school years: I was lucky to get into Fieldston at all. My test scores were so so; I later found out I was borderline dyslexic. But the application

  • 6. How Does Hrothgar Use Figurative Language In Beowulf Over time, the individuals within Herot have become aware of the evils and menacing conditions that have sprung from Grendel s and his mother environment. Unfortunately, Beowulf s boastful attitude and past war experiences with numerous creatures has led him to undermine dangers of the lair. During Hrothgar s speech to Beowulf, Hrothgar uses figurative language, vivid imagery, and displeasing syntax to demonstrate how Grendels environment is filled with treachery, hellish components, and danger, creating a sense of fear and concern for Beowulf, which will allow him to develop a humble attitude. The poem provides a description on how creatures that possess superior qualities, similar to Beowulf, do not survive in Grendel s lair. Hrothgar uses distasteful syntax and provides vivid examples to assert how creatures that contain superior characteristics and/or qualities are tarnished by the menacing environment.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... His example suggests that the influx of death, horrifying creatures, and abnormal physical features consume the superior qualities that these individuals once attained. Also, these vivid examples depict how the menacing environment alters the mindset of individuals who possess similar features as Beowulf, implying how strength and superiority may not be adequate enough to survive. Hrothgar describes the appearance of Grendel s lair to Beowulf, and from his vivid description the audience learns about unpleasant aspects of the lair. Other things I try, I have second and even third helpings.Trying my mom s new recipes always makes me respect good food to a higher extent. This is why my favorite sandwich is a twist on the true American favorite, the burger. I want you to know why this burger is the very best there is. First, you need take the butter and melt it down... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This burger is no exception. The burger must also be topped with a scrumptious smoked ham and delicious bacon. Both of these should be hot when put on the burger. The ham, since it is smoked, does not need extensive heating which may ruin the beautiful pink color of ham. The bacon itself should be cooked in a very specific and delicate way. It must be cooked to the point where it is no longer flimsy, so which would render it chewy, but not overly crunchy which would render it nearly unedible. For extra flavor, cook both of them in the same place you cooked the burger without removing the burger grease. The next part of the burger is one of the most essential and the easiest part. What you need is a little bit of a smooth, white swiss cheese. However, unlike what many people like to do you should try to refrain from buying the cheapest cheese you can. When it comes to cheese, the higher priced cheese is more expensive for a reason, and it s the way to go. When the cheese is set between the slice of ham and the burger, you want it to melt so it holds the two together, which is something you are not likely to get with a cheaper ... In any case, the organization lost a track of its past records that demonstrated the third due administration. After a great deal of bothers and protests the issue was settled. Notwithstanding, this occurrence made me end with that organization and joining another. A large number of companies are unable to keep up the track of their administrations which causes them a big time loss. Each business plans to build its deal breaking its past records. Furthermore, the best way to do it is to draw in new clients as well as to keep up them after deals. An organization that prioritizes its customers will always be referred. The primary purpose behind the decrease of offers in an organization is its absence of duty to give appropriate administrations to its clients. An enlisted grumbling is here and there which is sometimes not attended by the organization which prompts expanded grievances among the shoppers prompting decrease in the sales. • 10. Marketing Of A Global Economy The concept of the sharing economy is still relatively new and many still have no clue what sharing means. While time sharing has been around for quite a while; the sharing economy goes beyond time sharing houses for vacations. Some have begun to share their vehicles and even starting friendly taxi type companies that offer cheaper rides than the tradition taxi companies. Many have embraced the sharing economy as it is found to be a great value to the consumer. However, companies are seeing it as a serious threat to their business. The debate goes back and forth as to whether the importance of consumer value is in fact causing the replacement of traditional business. The biggest concern is that the sharing economy will thrive and traditional businesses will continue to suffer the loss of customers unless they lower prices and get more competitive. However, for some businesses sticking it out and being more competitive could potentially lead to more financial loss than merely closing up shop. Marketing in a Global Economy Marketing in our economy has become harder and harder as the age of technology grows and billions of people see and ignore advertisements in every aspect of their life. Killer whales have been kept in captivity since 1961, and 55% of those whales have been kept in United States captivity (Pg. 3). So is it truly possible for something so large to be kept in a small environment, restricted in their movements, and limited in their ability to do what nature intends, while still being happy? My answer to this question is no. I do not believe that Killer Whalesare happy living in captivity on the basis that they are not allowed to swim freely. Visual Merchandising in Retail Visual Merchandising in Retail For this assignment I have been asked to describe how visual merchandising is applied to the three selected retail outlets to an identified range of goods. Store one Tesco Merchandising techniques In Tesco the merchandising techniques they use are: Senses. A supermarket like Tesco would use this technique to try and bring more customers into the store by using smell, sight, sound and taste. They would play music to try and attract people into the store, and they would also have staff at the front of the store offering free samples to customers to try to try and persuade them to buy the product. This is very appealing for the customer as it provides a quick route for those who are shopping for bargains. This also keeps the customers looking at different parts of the store as this link leads to the display of many of their products. Sales and discounts can encourage so called trial and repeat purchases. Retailers can use special offers such as buy one get one offers. Coupons are another way to encourage purchases by offering discounts on products. Free gifts with purchase also encourage customers to purchase products and increase sales. Sales whether advertised in the store, online, in newspapers or via some other medium will help get customers into the store. Retailers can place sales signs in window displays as an incentive for customers to shop. • 14. Anne Sexton Old In the poem Old by Anne Sexton, the narrator is presumably in a hospital setting as she says she is afraid of needles and tired of rubber sheets , tubes , and faces that I don t know . This choice of setting is most likely a result of Sexton s own stays in mental hospitals because of her depression and addiction troubles. After the setting is established the narrator says that she thinks death is starting and that is starts like a dream . Essay On P16ink4a Overexpression p16INK4a overexpression in HPV infected human cancers and their prognostic values The RB protein is inactivated by interaction with the high risk HPV oncoprotein E7 (Refs. 131, 132), and oncoprotein E6 induces degradation of the tumor suppressor p53. RB inactivation releases p16INK4a from its negative feedback control, causing a paradoxical increase in the levels of this protein, which attempts to inhibit uncontrolled cellular replication. As a consequence, p16INK4a is overexpressed in HPV expressing tumors such as cervical cancer and head and neck tumors (Refs. 133 135; Table 1). In colon cancer, two different patterns of p16INK4a overexpression have been reported. The п¬Ѓrst pattern is related to senescence in serrated adenomas, which have malignant transformation associated with p16INK4a downregulation (Refs. 138, 139). Before starting this diet, Carpenter ate everything in sight. Enjoying all the foods she knew she wouldn t eat in a long time. By the end of the diet, Carpenter would kill for a bag of chips. For hundreds of years, countries have developed constitutions and other documents in place to form justice for those within the country. In Twelve Angry Men by Reginald Rose, the idea of justice is bounced around by twelve men on a jury. These men have the unthinkable decisions of whether a suspected murderer is given the death penalty or able to walk free. The jury in Twelve Angry Men made the most just decision they could. To understand how the decision they made was just and to explain some background, this essay will cover a few major ideas. It will talk about how Reginald Rose included the ideas of: reasonable doubt, being innocent until proven guilty, the jury system, and public defenders. Twelve Angry Men touches on one of the key principles of the American criminal justicesystem. This is the belief of the defendant being innocent until proven guilty. The idea is to give every person a fair trial that follows the rules set forth in the constitution. In Twelve Angry Men, a young man is on trial for the murder of his father. Many of the jurors jump to conclusions about the defendant s guilt because of his lack of wealth and his ethnicity. Several of jurors make comments similar to these people and kids like this are always up to no good (Rose 24). This shows an assumption based not on the person, but on a very broad, vague, and stereotypical view. The biggest ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 24. Social Movement Literature Review Introduction: Throughout history, social movement organizations (SMOs) or small groups, loosely connected by a shared purpose have created transformational change. Charles Tilly defines social movements as a series of contentious performances, displays and campaigns, by which ordinary people make collective claims on others (Tilly 2004:3). Examples of these movements are the Women s suffrage, civil rights and the LGBTQ movement. Similar forces are transforming businesses, military affairs and religion. SMOs have become an important part of society because these movements provide a forum for grievances and demands to be heard. These movements also provide citizens an institution outside of the traditional political system. The purpose of this paper is twofold: 1) to better understand the potential connection between the old and new movements and 2) determine if a certain theory, strategy, method or goal makes a social movement more or less successful compared to others as it takes more than feelings of frustration to persuade an individual to sacrifice time, money, relationships on these grievances. As will be indicated in the literature review, there are several arguments concerning the success of social movements. • 25. Gummy Bear Hypothesis For Osmosis Introduction: Osmosis is a natural occurrence constantly happening within the cells of all living things. For osmosis to occur, water molecules must move across a semipermeable membrane from an area of low concentration to an are of high concentration. In order to understand osmosis, people must understand the different types of concentrations that can be present within solution. One of them is an Isotonic solution where the concentration of dissolved particles is equal to that of a cell s. Another is a hypertonic solution where there is a higher concentration of dissolved particles then inside the cell. And lastly there is a hypotonic solution where there are less dissolved particles than inside the cell. As dissolved particles move to a region of lower concentration, water moves the opposite direction as a result of there being less water in the highly concentrated region. In this experiment, gummy bears were placed in salt water, sugar water, and tap water to find the measure of osmosis between the solution and gummy bear. Hypothesis: If the gummy bear is added to the solution, then it will lose its coloring and expand. Materials: The materials used during the experiment included three plastic cups, three gummy bears, masking tape, marker, balance, calculator, tray, one plastic spoon, a measurement tray, and a ruler. The cause of a migraine could be many different things. This research paper could help out a lot pf people who may have not yet experienced a migraine attack. A migraine attack is one of the hardest illnesses to diagnose but a migraine could also lead to other things more severe. A migraine? Migraines, severe painful headaches often proceeded or accompanied by sensory warning signs such as flashes of light, blind spots, tingling in the arms and legs, nausea, vomiting, and increased sensitivity to light and sound. Migraine headaches result from a combination of blood vessel enlargement and the release of chemicals from nerve fibers that coil around the blood vessel. This then causes the sympathetic nervous system to respond with nausea, diarrhea, and vomiting. These migraine headaches are commonly misdiagnosed as tension type headaches or sinus headaches. During the headache, an artery enlarges that is located on the outside of the skull just under the skin of the temple. This causes a release of chemicals that cause inflammation, pain, and further enlargement of the artery. (http://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Migraine) What triggers a migraine? Feminist wanted radical change, changes to match the progress that was going on in the world, and that was creating new roles for women. Conservatives opposed progress; they said that if something was not broken, and it had work fine until now, it should not be change, it should be respected, and preserve. The texts that don t involve this, such as the Old Testament, include some form of absolute divine punishment that defeats the need for a judicial system altogether. With In the Penal Colony, Kafka gives us an opportunity to explore a society in which the legal system involves absolute punishment without divine intervention, and challenges us to think normatively about it and the effects it has on society. In the society where In the Penal Colony is set, a unique system of justiceand punishment is used. Following the principle that guilt is always beyond doubt, individuals accused of a crimeare not given any opportunity to defend themselves, and are instead put to death using a torture machine (Kafka 155). This brings up important normative questions: what does this say about the judicial system and its effectiveness, and is this system just? On one hand, it can be perceived as unjust, as people are not given leniency and more importantly may be convicted of crimes they did not commit. As Professor Weiler says, The worst thing you can do is convict an innocent man. But throughout George Orwell s Animal Farm, the reader learns that a utopian society is in fact impossible. The reader learns this when Old Major tells of a dream he has where everything is perfect and no humans are involved, however when the revolution occurs and the humans are chased off the farm, the pigs become in charge and start to manipulate their power and the other animals, proving that no matter how hard the animals try, they will never have the good life that they want. Furthermore, in Peter Weirs the Truman Show, we see that your own utopia can not be shaped by another being, because although being in power, Christof makes everything as perfect as he can for Truman, Christof can never give Truman the good life he actually wants which then leaves Truman finding his life unsatisfactory. The good life is determined by freedom and to be able to go where you want and do what you want to do, thus proving that a utopian society can not actually be made because if everyone could do what they want, there s no guarantee that people would do the right thing which is why we have people in power. • 33. Cognitive Control And Social Control Essay Adolescence is categorized by psychological changes in relation to identity, self consciousness, and relationships with others (Sebastian, C., Burnett, Blakemore, S. The cognitive control focuses more on supervisory functions such as our working memory, decision making, self consciousness, and attention distribution; while, the social control supports the individual being more sociable, forming more complex relationships and becoming more sensitive to acceptance and rejection by others (Steinberg, L. Morris, A. S., 2001). The adolescence period of development begins with the onset of physiologically normal puberty, and ends when an adult identity and behavior are accepted. Or have you no love within your heart. Do you dream? Or create? Do you see the nature all around us? Those were many of the thoughts and questions that ran through my head when reading the poem The World Is Too Much With Us , by William Wordsworth. Throughout the story there were three messages that stood out the most in Wordsworth s poem, which involve love, the power to not care and be greedy, and creation within the mind. In the poem the writing can be taken and understood many different ways, but one thing that stood out to me was the message of love. Now not necessarily love for one another but love for nature was expressed throughout the poem through various ways. We have given our hearts away, a Sordid boon! (Wordsworth, Line, 5). What William was trying to explain in just that line was we would give our hearts away to nature at any point, because it s the love for the way that nature is and all its beauty and peace. It can so easily capture our hearts to love nature and all it has to offer. Furthermore, Wordsworth, talks a lot and describes a lot about what nature does. For instance. He talks about how the sea is at night time, how the wind has a sort of howl to it, and that also really shows the love for nature that is expressed in this poem. And even the love that the narrator has for nature and its beauty. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Essay on Gran Torino and The Right Stuff Getting old and aging are things that have become difficult points for many and despite the negative representation of the elderly in film, they do serve a purpose. On the big screen we continue to see many underpinnings of ageist assumptions when in fact many of the characters are strong figures that Still have the Right Stuff . Clint Eastwood dispels that myth and several significant scenes epitomize this concept in the movie hit Gran Torino (2008). Gran Torino (2008) exposes and defends against ageist assumptions although many believe the underlying theme is that of racism and bigotry. The physical signs of aging include a decline in flexibility and endurance in the first incident described below. In the second meeting with Sue, his heroism and powerful strength and persona is appreciated. He is no longer seen as a feeble old man. As an initiation, Thao is asked to steal Walt s prized 1972 Ford Gran Torino. He botches the attempt, as Walt, rather stumblingly, chases his out of his garage with his M1 rifle. Later, Thao s sister, Sue (Ahney Her) is set upon by some stereotypically predatory young black man and Walt, brandishing a pistol, rescues her. Another scene in which the character of Walt deals with the prejudices of ageist yet remains in control is when his son and daughter in law gift him a telephone for old people with giant buttons and numbers on it for his birthday. They also present him with a gopher to help him pick up things on the ground more easily and retirement brochures. These gifts would make things easier because he worked hard his whole life. This was the last straw and he throws them out. This reaction shows Walt had the right stuff. He was not feeble or afraid to talk back to his children. As people age, they often accept the emotional abuse but Walt would not. Another concept where we see Walt fighting the concept of ageist is his role to man Thao up a bit. With the reading and understanding of the Bible almost completely laid in the hands of the preacher, the congregation was forced to believe all the words that the preacher said. With this lack of deductive reasoning the Puritans would find themselves thinking about things done wrong if there was a life threatening winter blizzard or reflect the things that were done right in the event of a bountiful harvest. He in his writing shines a light on suffering of the soldiers in the unpleasant environment. The poem, Dulce et decorum est starts off with giving us an upsetting image of the troops and their conditions. They are described as Bent double, like old beggars under sacks . Use of simile in the first line of the poem compares young men to old beggars and reminds us of how helpless they were. Their expectations of their appearance in clean uniforms and excitement of the war, as suggested by the propaganda, were shattered. Distorted by the conflict, these soldiers once strong and healthy had no strength left in them. Being labelled old beggars indicates they had nothing to live for and were in a wait to get out of misery. Furthermore, the description of the soldiers and their unlikely comparisons in similes does not improve. Owen writes Knock kneed, coughing like hags which suggests that the health of these men or hags as they were being called was extremely challenged and illnesses were taking over them. This is very effective as it shows how the men were aged and coughing like witches. Being compared to hags which would have been very powerful back in the days meant they were no less than women.
