With the increasing complexity that comes with adopting distributed architectures like Kafka, it is difficult to identify and triage performance anomalies. Implementing Distributed Tracing technologies like OpenTelemetry can add context to the messages flowing through your system, allowing us to visualize the data flow to pinpoint bottlenecks, bugs, and other performance issues. However, implementing end-to-end distributed tracing can be challenging for multi-request and asynchronous processes built on Kafka. This talk will walk through how to use OpenTelemetry to tell the full story of a request as it travels through your Kafka producer, queue, and consumer. First, we will learn how context propagation works in OpenTelemetry with W3C and B3 protocols. Then, we will go through the problems faced when instrumenting asynchronous requests. Finally, we will go through the context propagation implementation of the OpenTelemetry Kafka exporter, tracing multi-request and asynchronous processes.

As the adoption of Kubernetes continues to grow, so does the need for securing containerized applications and their data. One effective security model that has gained popularity is Zero Trust Networking, which assumes that all resources, devices and users are untrusted, and access to resources is granted only after proper authentication and authorization. However, implementing Zero Trust Networking in Kubernetes can be challenging, given the dynamic nature of containerized workloads and the complexity of network policies. In this presentation, we will explore how to implement Zero Trust Networking in Kubernetes using Cilium, Hubble & Grafana. We will start by setting up Cilium on a Kubernetes cluster, which provides network security by enforcing identity-based access control policies using eBPF. Next, we will export Network Policy Verdict metrics using Hubble, which allows us to visualize network policies and track security events in real-time. Finally, we will use a Grafana dashboard to visualize these metrics and demonstrate how to secure a Kubernetes namespace without affecting existing traffic in the namespace. By the end of this presentation, attendees will have a good understanding of the importance of Zero Trust Networking in Kubernetes and how to implement it using Cilium, Hubble & Grafana. They will also learn how to secure a Kubernetes namespace and monitor network policies using a Grafana dashboard.

At Intuit, we have adopted k8s as our new saas platform and re-invented our CI/CD pipeline to take full advantage of k8s. In this presentation, we will discuss our journey from Spinnaker to Argo CD. 1. Reduce CI/CD time from 60 minutes to 10 minutes. 2. Reduce production release (or rollback) from 10 minutes to 2 minutes. 3. Enable concurrent deployment using spinnaker and argo cd as HA/DR to safely adopt the new platform with no downtime. 4. Be compatible with the existing application monitoring toolset.

Most software engineers loathe and fear debugging dependency update issues. They are common challenges in the modern enterprise environment. The proliferation of git repositories, the sharing of reusable code and rise of the microservice all conspire to make organization-wide binary integration a nightmare. At Netflix, engineers are not immune to the cost of dependency updates. Library owners publish new versions of their code without a comprehensive understanding of the organizational impact. Application owners ingest new library versions that can fail in obvious or subtle ways, leading to decreased confidence and slower organizational velocity. But these are problems we understand, and tooling can help.

API have capabilities, features, and instructions. Things that differentiate it, and bring value. They have needs that are critical to its success – just like any other product. The success of your Product(API) is determined by the pace developers are adopting it. If the word “API” is in your landscape as the answer to growing your organization’s profitability, this session is dedicated to helping you. In this talk you’ll understand the importance for bringing Developer Experience to the start of your product development, and bringing developers to the front of decision making. We’ll highlight the “Dos and Don’ts” of adopting a successful API strategy at large scale Enterprises. Finally, we’ll review successful ways of talking about APIs as Products.

Getting started on AWS is easy, but building a scalable, reliable, and performant product in the cloud can be a challenge for startups and enterprises alike. Netflix has famously migrated all our services to the cloud. Along the way, we have open-sourced large portions of our platform that helped make this a reality. In this talk, Mike McGarr (Manager – Netflix Developer Productivity) will provide a survey of the Netflix OSS products available. Mike will also share patterns and lessons Netflix learned migrating to the cloud. This talk will cover tools such as Nebula, Aminator and Spinnaker. Lastly, Mike will leave you with a roadmap for how to get started with Netflix OSS on your cloud today.

Shepherding change: leading your DevOps transformation
