The Cab Rank Rule
Research Essay
Introduction
Australia has taken from English Law in adopting the cab rank rule, encoded in The Victorian Bar
Incorporated Practice Rules 2009 (Vic). This essay will discuss the application of the rule, the
strengths and weaknesses and will conclude to discuss why the rule should remain an integral part
of the Bar despite many calls for its abolition.
What is the cab rank principle ?
The cab rank rule states that a lawyer practicing solely as a barrister must accept a brief in a field
they profess to practice. Barristers are professionally bound by this duty if the brief is in the
barrister s capacity, skill and expertise; the barrister is available to appear and is not committed to
other engagements which may inhibit ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The second rationale behind the cab rank rule is that is protects barristers from adverse
consequences that could arise from accepting a contentious brief. A barrister may be subjected
to public scrutiny or criticism from those who believe the barrister is sympathizing with a
repugnant criminal. Yet, with the existence of the cab rank rule, the obligation to accept the
brief provides the barrister with a justification. In theory, this is an essential strength of the cab
rank rule, however, in practice in may be redundant. This rationale is on the premise that the
layperson is aware of the cab rank rule, a proposition that is far from the truth. In 2010, Brian
Walters, a QC, was running for the Greens and his Labor opponent attacked him for once taking a
brief for a brown coal company. The fact that a politician is not aware of the cab rank rule suggests
that members of the general public would also be unaware of the rule, thereby denying barristers
the protection the rule purports to give.
Lastly, a barrister must refuse to accept a brief if they would be placed in a conflict of interest or
would otherwise be detrimental to the administration of justice. However, the barrister holding
strong moral views inconsistent with the subject matter is not reasonable ground to refuse a brief.
If the client still wishes to proceed despite the barrister s

Being A Cheerleader
My most memorable school experience, revolves around the extracurricular of being a
cheerleader. Being able to have the opportunity to thrive in school spirit and to be able to build
lifelong friendships has allowed me to cherish my high school experience. Even though being a
cheerleader consists of many responsibilities and events; my most favored school experience is
being a part of the schools organized pep rallies. Pep rallies are memorable to me because it is a
couple times out of the school year that each student comes together to support and encourage our
own fellow students. By encouraging students of all ages to be apart of this experience is
important to me, because seeing each student happy in sight of their school is inspiring.

Martin Luther King And The Civil Rights Movement
Martin Luther King remains one of the most controversial historical figures of the 20th century.
Historians and modern politicians alike, challenge his contributions to the Civil Rights Movement
and the legitimacy of his leadership. While King is traditionally presented as a leader of the
movement, Ella Baker, an African AmericanCivil Rights activists, questions this convention and
claims the [Civil Rights] movement made Martin. Furthermore, often portrayed as the decisive
factor of social change, King s leadership and significance in the Civil Rights Movement is largely
overemphasized and his exaggerated historical importance, detracts from the myriad of social
factors and local movements that propelled social change. Although Martin... Show more content on

Moreover, the true start of the Civil Rights Movement began with the Emmett Till Case, as it was a
tipping point for the Civil Rights movement and revealed the discrimination that oppressed African
American. Media was a medium in which African Americans can expose the evil and oppression of
racial discrimination in America, and the media was to which King owed much of his social
influence and publicity.
Martin Luther king played a central role in mobilising African American Communities for national
activism through his leadership in religious communities and activism such as the National Council
of Churches and the Montgomery Improvement Association; however, his leadership in the
movement was largely shaped by local grassroot movements, which played far greater roles in
national protest and activism as demonstrated by Nashville sit ins and boycotts. Similarly to the
events in Montgomery, the Nashville Sit ins were led primarily by students and local activists. The
grassroots leaders and students who founded the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee acted
upon their own initiative, and although the movement often called upon King s leadership and
oratory skills, the movement was primarily guided by self reliant grassroots leaders. Furthermore,
the students had other sources of tactical and ideological inspiration such as Rosa parks and E.D.

Antioxidant and Anti-Inflammatory Properties of Lunasin
Antioxidant and Anti inflammatory Properties of Lunasin:
Experimental, clinical and epidemiological studies have revealed that chronic inflammation is
involved in the development of approximately 15 20% of malignancies worldwide52, being clearly
associated with increased risk of cancer and cancer progression53. It is believed that persistent
inflammatory cells recruitment, repeated generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), pro
inflammatory mediators and continued proliferation of genomically unstable cells contribute to
neoplasic transformation which ultimately result in tumor invasion and metastasis54.
Determination of anti inflammatory and/or antioxidative properties has been proposed as a good
indicator for screening any anticancerous agents55,56. Oxidative stress and inflammation are two of
the most critical factors implicated in carcinogenesis and other degenerative disorders such as
colon cancer and inflammatory bowel diseases respectively. Hernandez Ledesma and co worker
investigated how lunasin, affect these factors. Lunasin inhibits linoleic acid oxidation and acts as 2,
20 azino bis (3 ethylbenzothiazoline 6 sulfonic acid) (ABTS) diammonium salt radical scavenger.
Furthermore, using Lipopolysaccharides (LPS) stimulated RAW 264.7 macrophages, lunasin
reduced the production of ROS by LPS induced macrophages in a significant dose dependent
manner. Lunasin also inhibited the release of pro inflammatory cytokines (tumor necrosis factor a

Running head: DISTINCTIONS BETWEEN CLASSICAL AND OPERANT CONDITIONING
Abstract
There are many differences between classical and operant conditioning that will be discussed in this
paper. These two types of conditioning are often misinterpreted by many individuals; therefore, it is
important to distinguish the two. Learning the different ways animals function and the new
behaviors they adapt to are of interest to both Ivan Pavlov and Edward Thorndike. .Sex differences
are measured and taken in consideration in both kinds of conditioning processes. ... Show more

For instance, a toddler who burns his hand on a cooking stove will be less likely to come near it
next time, remembering how he got burnt from it. Another form of punishment is when a behavior
ends on a desirable event.
An example of this is when a boy pulls his sister s hair and is given a time out, which has lost his
privilege to watch TV. The boy has learnt a lesson because he won t dare to even touch his sister s
hair remembering he had lost his privilege to watch TV.
Classical conditioning deals with involuntary responses, primarily involving emotions, whereas,
operant conditioning deals with voluntary responses that are active behaviors operating within the
environment. Compared to operant conditioning, classical conditioning is more passive because in
operant conditioning, learners are either getting rewarded for something or punished for something,
which keeps the process active. Organisms experience a consequence despite of the fact they have
learned the conditioned response. On the other hand, in operant conditioning, the consequence is
dependent on the likelihood of the organism reacting to the response. Khawaja 5
Running head: DISTINCTIONS BETWEEN CLASSICAL AND OPERANT CONDITIONING
How do you determine the type of conditioning, whether it is classical or operant?
Focusing on the outcome or consequence is the key to determining between the two because if the
outcome occurs regardless of a response to be shown, then the paradigm is

America s Most Important Pastime
America s Most Important Pastime
Today men and women live equal lives. They have the same opportunities when it comes to jobs,
voting, education, and practically any other entitlement that comes to mind. According to the
Constitution, equality for women came about in 1920. That was the year women received the
right to vote, and in their eyes received the right to be seen as an equal instead of a lesser person.
However, to the dismay of many women, that idea was not entirely true. Women were still viewed
differently than men by the public. This difference in perception can be seen by focusing on the job
opportunities for a woman through the 1920s and up until World War II. Before World War II
women were not supposed to work in the factories, instead they were supposed to work at home.
During World War II however, many workingmen were drafted into the army, thus creating the
necessity for women to step in and work in the factories and other higher class jobs. Thrusting
women into the working class emphatically changed the ideology that men and women were not
equal, however, I argue that the greatest change of mind was not created by the women working in
the factories, but by the women who were elected to substitute in to keep the game of baseball
afloat. The female athletes who played baseball during World War II were brought in as a last
resort to save baseball, forced to fulfill stereotypes, and taught how to act, but were still persevered
through all of those strikes

Meursault s Indifference in The Stranger, by Albert Camus
In The Stranger, Albert Camus allows the main character to tell the story in order to give the reader
an experience of his own. Obviously, with a novel also comes language, which Camus incorporates
cleverly as a way to indirectly illustrate Meursault s thoughts about certain situations. Although the
novel represents a postmodern setting, the author shifts the overall meaning. In The Stranger,
Camus applies a unique literary style as a power that deflects blame from Meursault, the antiheroic
character. In order to disclaim the fault of Meursault, Camus incorporates several instances in which
he leaves a greater sense of authority to nonliving objects, while further drawing attention away
from the main character. Based on the implication of... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Furthermore, he covers the Arab s intentions when talking about the same blade that persists in
bringing Meursault pain. He describes the stabbing as a scorching blade [that] slashes at [his]
eyelashes and stabs at [his] stinging eyes (59). The moment that the blade brings itself to Meursault
s face and slashes at his eyelashes, of course, is the point at which Meursault acknowledges that
everything is beginning to reel. Finally, under the influence of the sea s fiery breath and the sun s
scorching attitude, Meursault admits that the trigger gave when reminiscing on the death of the
Arab (59). Not until after he blames the trigger for the mishap does he use first person to describe
the negative actions, as he shoots the Arab four more times. At this point, perhaps, he realizes his
own fault within the situation as he continues to set himself in place for the remainder of part one.
The simple sentences in The Stranger reveal Meursault s emotional detachment from society, while
the more complex sentences are assigned to objects with authority. Throughout the entire novel,
Meursault s simplicity and disinterest in the world can be identified with the incorporation of his
simple statements. Especially in this particular passage, Meursault finds it unimportant to challenge
himself in a way that makes sense. Although Meursault recognizes the sensibility of walking

Informative Speech On Ovarian Cancer
Ovarian cancer is a type of cancer that involves the reproductive glands females only, the ovaries.
Ovaries contain 3 cells: surface epithelium, germ cells, and stromal cells. The surface epithelium
are what cover the outer lining of the ovaries. Germ cells are cells that are bound to form eggs.
Stromal cells are cells that release hormones and connects many different structures of the ovaries.
Each of the cells can develop into different types of tumors. In most cases of ovarian cancerthe
epithelial tumors is the most commonly found in ovarian tumors. When being diagnosed with
ovarian cancer the 3 main organs affected are the intestines, liver, and stomach.

The Independent Record Labels of the 1950’s and 1960’s
The Independent Record Labels of the 1950 s and 1960 s History of Music Production Eric Eller
Throughout the 1950 s and 1960 s, a wave of new musical movements by independent record labels
and new artists emerged in the United States. This movement is captured in the stories of those
label creators and owners, and in the turbulent journey through their successes and failures. The first
emergence was fueled by multiple factors: competitive economic circumstances, up and coming
local musical talent in conjunction with the independent labels and studio owners, and the
commercially viable musical interest and curiosity of consumers in these local artists. An article
poses another causative factor that makes sense: when rock and roll... Show more content on

Philips would take a while to realize that a huge prospect was about to enter his life and studio.
Elvis Presley, a young truck driver, had come in to record two songs at a cost of $8 as a birthday
present for his mother. Philips was actually out of the office so his secretary Marion Keisker
recorded Presley. Foreseeing talent, Keisker put aside a copy of the acetate master. Keisker
continued to advocate to Philips the idea of investing in Presley s commercially promising
musical potential. Philips eventually agreed to give Presley a try and matched him up with
local guitarist Scotty Moore and bass player Bill Black. This group became quite successful, and
together, under the direction of Philips, helped to influence and redefine the rockabilly genre of
music at the time. It shows Sun s success that by 61, Phillips was able to buy a Presto 900 P
recorder. Elvis Presley s presence at the label allowed Philips to once again upgrade his system,
this time opting for a Tube 76 D broadcast console and two new Ampex 350 tape recorders. The
growing sophistication of his studio rig is a testimony to the success that he accomplished with
such sensations as Presley. He delayed one tape head slightly in relation to the other, which made
the signature Sun Sound. While Philips did find success for a while with artist Elvis Presley; Elvis
popularity outgrew the facilities and financial capabilities of Sun

There were boycotts of the malls in Baton Rouge, people were marching even holding up traffic.
This didn t only occur in Baton Rouge, but across the U.S. people were standing up for this
injustice. Alton Sterling was selling cd in front of a convenience store when two officers
approached him, the situation escalated Mr. Sterling was shot several times resulting in his death.
Baton Rouge police did not provide much information about what escalated the incident between
the officers and Sterling or what prompted an officer to fire his weapon. A witness, however,
described police as aggressive and said Sterling was armed but was not holding his gun or
touching his pockets during the incident. The level of force an officer uses varies based on the
situation. Because of this variation, guidelines for the use of force are based on many factors,
including the officer s level of training or experience.

Hurricane Impact On The Hurricane
There are times when I was out in [the rain] that I had to hold my hand over my mouth and nose
just to breath. . . because it was falling at times like being in a waterfall (Halverson, par. 5). Those
are the words of William Whitehead, a sheriff from Lovingston, Virginia in charge of recovery and
rescue from Hurricane Camille. The hurricane affected the lives of everyone living in the area;
however, the hurricane did not only affect the people. The hurricane affected the developed area as
well. The effects of Hurricane Camille began immediately, many people lost solely their homes,
while others lost everything. Without doubt, Hurricane Camille, was a devastating costly event for
the Gulf Coast.
Tropical Storm Camille began forming on August 14, 1969 in the Cayman Islands (45 Years Later:
Remembering Hurricane Camille s Deadly Landfall, Aftermath, par. 5). Before hitting the United
States, Camille passed Cuba as rapidly increasing wind speed. Because of a fast drop in pressure,
tropical storm Camille became Hurricane Camille. The hurricane hit Mississippi on the night of
August 17, 1969 (1969 Hurricane Camille, par. 2). Hitting Cuba caused Camille to weaken when
it returned to the Gulf of Mexico (par. 3). However, that did not stop Camille from hitting
Mississippi with winds as high 200 miles per hour (Pope, par. 4). Hurricanes form during the

Puritan Religious Values
French historian, Alexis de Tocqueville once said, methinks I see the destiny of America embodied
in the first Puritan who landed on those shores. In many ways this statement still remains true. The
Puritans came to the New World in the late 17th century with their unique religion that was founded
to reform the impure nature of the Church of England. Therefore, their culture was one of
simplicity both in their religion and in their lives. The Puritans were particularly God fearing
because of their belief in Predestination and due to this, in fear of leisure and idleness. The Puritans
remained the dominant cultural influence in the New World until the 19th century. Though the
Puritanfaith eventually died out, the legacy of their theological ideals have lived on in the values
that are quintessentially associated with being American today. American culture has inherited
from the Puritans a strong work ethic, an appreciation for education, and a focus on the sins of
others.
The Puritan belief in predestination provoked a perpetual search for outward signs of salvation.
This anxiety in turn inspired a strong work ethic that remains today as characteristically American.
Doing hard work and performing good deeds were signs that someone was one of the few elect,
which creates an internal, strong held correlation between success and salvation. In his sermon, A
Model of Christian Charity, John Winthrop notes that we are entered into covenant with Him for
this work... and will

So the intuitive ability of a Retail Sales Associate to adapt to different shopping preferences is
needed on his/her part to succeed in this job role.
Responsibilities of a Retail Sales Associate include building customer confidence by making their

positive addressing to and solving their problems; making effective use of store displays to attract
the customers; and developing a positive customer relationship.
Moreover, to improve the employees performance I need to modify their behaviors and need to

Information Driven Technique For Extortion
Misrepresentation, waste, and manhandle in the social insurance framework are evaluated at $700
billion yearly. Prescient investigation offers government and private payers the chance to recognize
and avoid or recoup such billings. This paper proposes an information driven technique for extortion
location taking into account similar examination, misrepresentat ion cases, and writing survey.
Unsupervised information mining procedures for example, anomaly discovery are recommended as
compelling indicators for extortion. In view of a multi dimensional information model produced for
Medicaidclaim information, particular measurements for dental suppliers were created and assessed
in investigative examinations utilizing exception identification connected to claim, supplier, and
patient information in a state Medicaid program. The proposed strategy empowered effective
recognizable proof of fake action, with 12 of the main 17 suspicious suppliers (71%) alluded to
authorities for examination with obviously strange and unseemly action. Future examination is in
progress to extend the strategy to different strengths and empower its utilization by extortion
experts.

22 1A management control system is a means of gathering and using information to aid and
coordinate the planning and control decisions throughout the organization and to guide the
behavior of its managers and employees. The goal of the system is to improve the collective
decisions within an organization.
22 2To be effective, management control systems should be (a) closely aligned to an organization

22 12Reasons why a dual pricing approach to transfer pricing is not widely used in practice include:
1.The manager of the supplying division uses a cost based method to record revenues and does not
have sufficient incentives to control costs.
2.This approach does not provide clear signals to division managers about the level of
decentralization top management wants. 3. This approach tends to insulate managers from the
frictions of the marketplace because costs, not market prices, affect the revenues of the supplying
division. 4. It leads to problems in computing the taxable income of subunits located in different tax
jurisdictions.
22 13Disagree. Cost and price information are often useful starting points in the negotiation
process. Costs, particularly variable costs of the selling division, serve as a floor below which
the selling division would be unwilling to sell. Prices that the buying division would pay to
purchase products from the outside market serves as a ceiling above which the buying division
would be unwilling to buy. The price negotiated by the two divisions will, in general, have no
specific relationship to either costs or prices. But the negotiated price will generally fall between
the variable costs based floor and the market price based ceiling.

(1) There are several arguments that support the Government s decision:
1.Protection of people s health. As World Health Organization states that the 3 million deaths in
1990 occurred as a result of smoking and in 1998 it raised to 4.023 million.
2.Preventing the children aged 14 24 years from being smokers. According to internal document
from R J Reynolds (1998) the bright advertising of the cigarettes that had a camel s picture on the
packing was attractive to children and stimulated teenage smoking.
3.Contributions of cigarettes to the budget of India is 0.14% versus the health costs which account
for 0.21%.
4.Provision of employment by the tobacco industry is an illusion because those who will not be
employed in the tobacco field will be employed somewhere else and will be more labor intensive.
5.Complete bans on the tobacco products give a better decrease in tobacco consumption. This is
evident in the investigation of UK s Department of Health (1992) which found out that the banning
of advertising resulted in fall of smoking.
(2) Opposed to the Government there are several arguments from Tobacco companies that

1)THE NEMEAN LION
Heracles was commanded by Eurystheus to bring to him the hide of the Nemean Lion. The lion
had been terrorizing the valley of Nemea. The lion was a monstrous offspring of Echidna and one
of Orthus or Typhoeus, or had plunged from the moon (Selene) to the earth.
Heracles used his bow and arrows to shoot the lion, but he noticed the arrows could not penetrate
its pelt. Thereby, he attacked it with his clubs causing the lion to run into a cave that had two
entrances. Hercules blocked one entrance, he then wrestled with the lion and strangled it.
Following this, he proceeded to skin it and wrapped himself in its skin after offering a sacrifice to
Zeus.

After Heracles successfully chopping off the immortal head and blocking it he dipped his arrows
in its poisonous blood. Anyone wounded by these arrows would die. Furthermore, he buried the

Despite Heracles completing this labor, Eurystheus denied to give him credit due to the fact that he
was helped by Iolaus to accomplish the feat.
3)THE HIND OF CERYNEIA
On Heracles third labor he was ordered to capture the Cerynitian Hind alive. The nymph Taygette
had devoted the hind to the goddess Artemis, the hind lived in the Sanctuary of Artemis on mount
Cerynea.
The hind was a deer with golden antlers and brass hoofs roaming the hills of Cerynea between
Arcadia and Achaea in central Peloponnesus. Heracles had expected to capture it unharmed
because it was sacred. Heracles pursued the hind for almost a year, when he finally managed to
capture the animal on the river banks of Ladon after chasing it as far as the land of Hyperboreans.
Heracles was returning to Tiryns with the deer on his shoulders. He then met Artemis and Apollo.
Artemis rebuked him but let him pass upon insistence that the blame should be placed on
Eurystheus. 4)THE ERYMANTHEAN BOAR
The fourth labor involved Heracles being ordered to capture the boar that lived on Mount
Erymanthus and was ruining the land of Psophis.

Rhetorical Analysis Walden
True to Yourself Henry David Thoreau, an alumni of Harvard University, is considered one of the
greatest authors from the 1800s. Although he worked a variety of professions, writing seemed to
be the one he enjoyed best. Thoreau even isolated himself in the woods for two years and wrote
about it in Walden, which is a text reflecting on simple living. In an excerpt of Walden
called Where
I Lived, and What I Lived For Thoreau argues that every individual should follow the beat of their
own drum.
In the beginning of paragraph seven Thoreau believes we should spend one day as deliberately
as nature (280). To emphasize his point, Thoreau uses anaphora throughout paragraph seven,
repeating the word let several times. Let, a verb, means to not prevent or forbid; allow. By
repeating the verb, Thoreau puts great emphasis on the phrases following let . Thoreau wants
people to know that they are allowed to live life simply. They are allowed to wake and fast or
breakfast, they are allowed to let company come and go, they are allowed to let the bells ring and
the children cry. People should ignore what other people think, or want and focus on what they
think, or want. Thoreau wants people to elude the little things and focus on the bigger, simpler
picture for themselves. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He uses rhetorical questions to highlight this. If the bell rings, why should we run with the
crowd? (280). If people went with the crowd, like birds flying south for the winter, they may
never discover what they want, just what the crowd wants. Running with the crowd, a person will
never reach their individual goals. To believe in your own thought, to believe in your goals, to
believe in yourself, that is going against the crowd. Unable to reach someone else s goals, they
need to strive for their own goals. Swimming against the stream, Thoreau isolated himself from
society, simplified his life, and discovered

What Is Macbeth s Treatment Of Women
Gender inequality has been a dominant and consistent struggle of human culture since its existence.
To this day, women constantly face oppression, unjust treatment, and less opportunities. For
centuries, women have played inferior roles compared to men, especially in marriage. When a man
and a woman would wed, it was understood that the womanwould serve her husband s needs and
demands. Over the centuries of human existence, however, many feminists and progressive
revolutionaries demanded change in the treatment of females. Since genderequality has become
accepted as necessary, women have enjoyed much more rights and freedoms as those given to men
though some may argue their opportunities are not exactly as equal compared to men. Many authors

Linda and Willy struggle with their financial situation and desire to achieve the American Dream.
When discussing their problems, Willy often interrupts Linda. In Act I, after Biff explains his
plans for a new business, Linda begins that maybe things are beginning to change, but Willy
immediately interrupts with stop interrupting! (jb). Contradictorily, Willy demands Linda to stop
interrupting, as if the blame for the inadequate conversation is her fault. Right when she is
optimistic, she is shot down by her rude and careless husband. Throughout the play, she is often
denied to opportunity to express her emotions and comfort her husband. Willy inarguably enjoys
a position of superiority over Linda, and rarely does Willy convey any genuine affection towards
his wife. Linda, however, cares a lot for him and does her best to offer support, despite such unjust
treatment. When talking to her son, she claims that he s a human being, and a terrible thing is
happening to him....so attention to must be paid (##). Her love for Willy blinds her from the
inequality she experiences in her household. Linda continues to support Willy in his pursuit of his
American Dream, no matter how cruel and arrogant he is. Though he is not favorable in the eyes of
the audience like most other tragedies, he is still the tragic hero. Arthur Miller illustrated the life a

Rhetorical Analysis Of President Joe Biden s Unity Through...
Unity Through Equality
In late June of 2016, Vice President Joe Biden had an official visit to his ancestral country,
Ireland. Biden planned his five day visit to meet with Prime Minister Enda Kenny to discuss Irish
American relations, and to address the Irish people about the value of global inclusiveness.
Throughout his speech, Biden uses different rhetorical strategies that aim to unify the Irish and
American people. Biden s arrival to Ireland occurs at a time when immigration is heavily debated,
and right before the world s largest pride parade in Dublin. Strategically, his words express the
similarities between Ireland and America, by connecting the two nations on one shared value of
equality. Biden uses equality as the foundation of a shared sense of resilience that is evidenced in
Irish and American past, present, and future.
Biden argues that both Ireland and America hold the same values at heart when comparing the
Declaration of Independence and the 1916 Proclamation. He states that the phrase We hold these
truths to be self evident that all men are created equal , and the 1916 Proclamation s, all of the
children of the nation equally , are notions founded in equal rights, equal opportunity, and religious
and civil liberties for everyone. Biden mentions that these terms are grounded, and are not empty
words on a page. He is trying to explain the depth of their meaning by noting that they are the
foundation of any political or social organization that aims to

The Emotional Struggles Associated With Raising An...
1.The emotional struggles associated with raising an exceptional child are complex and
innumerable. Many parents describe a pendulum of feelings that are both overwhelming and
intense. Such emotions include shock, denial, grief, guilt, confusion, exhaustion, determination,
frustration, acceptance, and love. Some parents have even expressed gratitude towards their
exceptional child, stating that their child has taught them a new meaning of love and they feel that
they ve become a better person for having gone through the experience of raising and supporting an
exceptional child. It s impossible to fully comprehend these feelings without having been through
them yourself, but, even so, your heart goes out to both these parents and their children, especially
if you are the childs teacher.
The two emotions I would like to discuss are frustration and determination. A frustrated parentmay
be so thoroughly overwhelmed with everything going on in their life that they ve seemingly
given up. Some of these parents have multiple children as well as jobs and other concerns.
Although I m sure they would wish to give their exceptional child their complete and utter
attention/concern that is not always physically possible. In a case like this, as a teacher, I would
try my best to offer whatever support I could. I would gather resources, provide options, and offer
advice on how to best support the child s academic needs. I would make myself available to the

The Problem Of Discrimination Against The Disabled Essay
There are many isms that exist in today s American culture. Because of these discriminations put
on others, there are plenty of ways to stop such hatred. Ableism has been around for a long time
and continues to be an issue today. Because of discrimination against the disabled, there have been
negative impacts on society; for example, society has turned disabilities into inabilities. In fact, it is
society that has stopped the disabled from reaching success.
54 million people suffer from some sort of disability. Whether that is mental, physical, or
emotional. It was believed long ago that people who suffered with disabilities were said to have
been demonic. Due to these beliefs, many children and adults were treated with utter disrespect and
harmed. Many scientific studies were done in order to come up with the reasoning of these mental
illnesses.
Ableism is the discrimination or prejudice against people who have disabilities. This
discrimination dates all the way back to 1981. Ultimately, this means that someone is defined by
his or her disability. Some people who struggle with a disability consider it to be rude when others
do not believe they can accomplish something in which others are able to accomplish.
During the Holocaust, ableism was present. However, back then, no on considered this to be
ableism only because there was so much discrimination during the Holocaust. This was just another
one of Hitler s heinous acts. There, they were also labeled as life unworthy

Virginia Woolf Men s Meals Essay
The differences between men s and women s colleges were considerable in Virginia Woolf s day.
Rather than proclaim this in an ordinary way, Woolf uses the separate meals served at each college
to illustrate the differences between the schools. Woolf makes a far more forceful, thoughtful
distinction between the male and femaleschools through such contrast than if she had simply
numbered their variations. Woolf details the relative poverty of the women s school, and therefore
women s position in society, through varied sentence structure, expression and imagery between the
descriptions of the meals.
Virginia Woolf uses different structures in each passage to portray the judgement within the
educational system to expose this part of society. The luncheon is described as invariably
memorable and was recounted using a series of compound complex sentences. Using these longer
sentences, Woolf attempts to show the sense of superiority that has been given to the men. They

bland. When Woolf states that it is the nature of biscuits to be dry, and these were biscuits to the
core, she suggests that their dinner was not made with care. The women were not served
respectfully as queens. The meal served at the Men s luncheon was delightful while the Women s
College had provided a meal that might as well have been comparable to hospital food. Through her
use of imagery throughout the two passages, Woolf highlights this slight discrimination, not only

Summary Of The Novel O Pioneers ! By Willa Cather
Willa Cather is an author who uses similar aspects and events of her life and puts them into her
novels. This approach allows the reader to know what inspired the events happening throughout the
novel. After reading the novel O Pioneers! by Willa Cather, I began to search for ideas leading me
deeper into the meaning of the novelas a whole. O Pioneers! is a novel in which several of the key
concepts and characterqualities can be better understood by learning more about the life of Willa
Cather. Aspects of O Pioneers! that involve the life of Willa Cather include where the novel is
taking place, the description of Alexandra s disposition, and the dominance Alexandra exhibits in
her family.
Willa Cather decides to have the setting of the novel take place in Hanover, Nebraska. She is
very familiar with Nebraska because after her family moved from Virginia, this is where she
grew up as a young child and attended school (Baughman par. 2). At the start of the novel,
Hanover, Nebraska is, A cluster of low drab buildings huddled on the gray prairie, under a gray
sky (Cather 1.1.1). The town is being given a strong, gloomy, and dark feeling similar to what her
childhood must have been like. We then begin to see glimpses of this appear when we introduce
the main character Alexandra and life in Hanover. Alexandra state s, Three big Bohemians were

Equal Employment Opportunity And Hrm
Introduction As a means to better understand equal employment opportunity and HRM, one can
examine the reasonable accommodations employers must make in regards to religion and disability.
In regards to such, some of the accommodations can be described, the agency responsible for such
enforcement can be examined, and two specific private sector workplace examples of religious and
disability accommodation can be noted. Through the examination of these concepts one can gain a
better understanding of equal employment opportunity and HRM. Accommodation Expectations
When taking into consideration the employment of those with disabilities or that are religious, one
ought to understand that there are several provisions established by the federal government that
stipulates the accommodations necessary to meet their specific needs. In regards to those with
disabilities there are several accommodations that employers must meet to remain within
compliance of the law. According to the EEOC, These include: making existing facilities accessible;
job restructuring; part time or modified work schedules; acquiring or modifying equipment;
changing tests, training materials, or policies; providing qualified readers or interpreters; and
reassignment to a vacant position (para. 2). Through incorporating these concepts into company
policy, an organization will fail to fall out of compliance. In terms of religious accommodation, an
employer is obliged to take into consideration the accommodation

A healthy natural environment is indispensible to the wellbeing of humans everywhere in the
world. From the provisioning adequate food, clean water and air, to regulating diseases, ecosystem
services and human health depend on conditions of the natural environment.
Links between the natural environment and human livelihood are complex. Human resource and
land use are structured by limits of the environment. Environmental determinism has in the past
been a prominent theory when exploring the relationship between humans and the environment.
The concept is that the evolution and development of humans, culture and society is a direct
response to the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
An example of where this has occurred is in the civilisation that once inhabited Easter Island. The
history of the island has become a symbol of human induced ecological and subsequent cultural
collapse. It was home to the ancient civilisation, of Polynesian decent and is most well known for
the hundreds of Moai stone statues that were erected across the island by the ancient civilisation
(Diamond, 2006) . It is known that the society on Easter Island was a complex society but at the
time that Europeans discovered the island, the population had crashed and was almost decimated
(de la Croix and Dottori, 2008). Ecological collapse is often regarded as the predominant factor,
which caused the societal collapse.
The limits set by Easter Islands geography presented challenges to early human settlers. The
climate is cool, windy and dry compared to other pacific islands. The cooler waters resulted in a
reduced availability of fish and shellfish, one of the main dietary staples for other civilisations in
the pacific at that time(Diamond, 2006). The accessibility to fresh water was also difficult. The
porous volcanic soils caused the water to percolate quickly. There is only one fresh water stream
on the island and few fresh water springs, offshore and ponds in volcanic craters (Diamond, 2006).
Its geographical isolation in the south pacific, 3200km from the coast of Chile and 2000km from
the nearest of the other south pacific island, the Pitcairn

Analysis of Music and the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra
I found out the performance from the enterprise quartet s website.Which is a university based
ensemble featuring members of Music and the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra. The reason why I
choose this performance is because since young, I have developed a strong affection in classical
music. Unlike other people who prefer European piano songs composed by Beethoven and Mozart,
I enjoy musicof both Chinese and European styles and I want to found out the difference between a
traditional Chinese concert and western style concert.
I went to the concert with my friends. The concert is set up at whitemud crossing library. The

The Era Of The Online Status
#Selfie: The Era of the Online Status
The creation of the Internet brought many changes to the human experience. People today use the
web for a variety of different things making the Internet a useful medium in creating and
promoting trends. The rise of digital media has brought a new means of information dissemination
and now provides society with resources such as news portals and social media platforms. Social
media or Web 2.0is a term to describe websites that allow social interaction with the added
functions of sharing and the creation of their own content. Web 2.0 sites like YouTube, Twitter and
Facebook have impacted the lives of millions of users worldwide and are now embedded into
popular culture. The emergence of Web 2.0 and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Social media platforms encourage competition for social benefits and have sparked the selfie
revolution in today s society. Individuals are now adopting a consciously self constructed persona
that is similar to brands or celebrities and is presented to an audience. Social media platforms are
dominating the web and have transformed it into a network of personal brands competing to
achieve an online status.
What is Branding?
Branding is most commonly known as a form of marketing practice that links a company s
product and services to cultural meanings. According to Rashid (2012), brands have become one
of the most discussed phenomena of marketing research in recent years. Brands are not simply a
symbol on a product or a mere graphic but a company s signature on constantly renewed creative
process that yields various products. While products can live and disappear, the brand remains alive.
The consistency of this creative process is what gives a brand its meaning and characters. Logos
have also become an increasingly important element of a brand in today s mass market economy
as a means of differentiation. Logos are the first step for any marketing as it is the face of the
brand. According to Stahle (2002), logos help companies distinguish themselves from their
competitors when there are so many product choices for consumers as they

Star Spangled Banner And Star Spangled Banner, By...
Bloodshed and the tyranny of battle has inspired art since the beginning of recorded history. In
essence though, the main purpose of war is to protect or enhance the liberties of the people and
their families fighting. Due to the complex and utter horrific experiences that happen during battle,
naturally people want to dedicate a long standing piece of work to honor those who have endured
those traumatic experiences for the greater good. Two examples of art being centered around war
are the Star Spangled Banner, by Francis Scott Key, and a sculpture entitled The Fountain of
Eternal Life, by Marshall Fredericks. When these two works are broken down into their key
elements it is apparent that there are key similarities between the images these works create, and
the reasons they were created; in addition to their connection to civil liberties. One must consider
the differences between the works as well, such as the mediums in which they were created, the
theme of the works, and what they were dedicated to. To be concise, both Key and Fredericks
created two extremely different works of art that have overlapping ideals, and have a strong
connection to civil liberties. Civil liberties are the basic human rightsguaranteed to every person.
Those rights include ideas like the freedom of speech, press, and assembly, freedom of religion,
and the open pursuit of happiness. A more personal definition of civil liberties is the ability to be
able to live whatever life one wants

The Internet Is The Leading Means Of Communication Worldwide
Malcolm spent his life on the Internet. Sara was tired of hearing the tap, tap of his computer. She
wanted to feel loved, to feel needed, but she wasn t going to get his attention while he was locked
away in the office with that dang computer. There was only one thing for Sara to do, and that was
to get a computer herself. She desire to find someone online that would loveher, need her, give her
attention and who would listen to her. There were plenty of websites for finding love.
Sara posted her bio, she was happy with the old photo she had cut out of a magazine. She has
come to the point in her life where she was ready to search for love. The picture didn t look like
her so no one would know. Primary technology rules the world today and many these days relies on
the computers for finding love. Because so many relies on the Internet, the Internet has become the
leading means of communication worldwide. This can be an enormous convenience and a huge
problem.
Searching for love on the Internet doesn t always work because many put on a false front and
conceal their true identities. I am not saying that searching for love on the Internet is entirely
wrong, but dating on the web is limited to only the Internet. Meeting a guy face to face also have
things that you have to look out for. Some people turn to the Internet because meeting a guy face
to face for some reason things just keeping going wrong. Many are searching for any form of

Feminist Feminism In Frankenstein
Born to Mary Wollstonecraft in August of 1797, Mary Shelley joined a lineage rich with feministic
pursuits. Undoubtedly inspired by her mother s famed Vindication on the Rights of Woman, Mary
Shelley portrayed feminist ideals throughout her own literature. Her most acclaimed work,
Frankenstein, emphasizes the patriarchy through its depiction of Victor Frankensteins nineteenth
century Genevan society. Both the overwhelming maledominance and lack of female presence
exhibited throughout Frankenstein highlights the importance of females among society.
When Victor Frankenstein seeks to fulfill his divine desire to become the creator of new life A
new species would bless me as its creator and source; many happy and excellent natures would
owe their being to me (33) he eliminates the inherent need for a feminine presence among society.
By granting himself the title of sole creator of human life, Victor strips females of their primary
role in the reproduction process a role which females have historically derived cultural power
from. In his pursuit to create life that owes its existence entirely to himself, Victor also endeavors
to steal this cultural power from females by eliminating its source. Without the power that their role
in the reproduction process affords them, the need for a feminine presence among society ceases to
exist thus making way for what Victor truly desires: a male exclusive society.
This definitive lack of feminine presence in the novel is further

Graphene And Its Effects On Our Environment
ABSTRACT
Graphene is pure carbon in the form of a very thin, nearly transparent sheet, one at6om thick. It has
been hailed as a miracle material because of its low weight, high strength and high electrical and
heat conductivity. Since 2004, the graphene market has risen and with the potential for future
application could be a multibillion dollar business. Graphene has been planned to replace
conductors and also replace catalysts in enzyme immobilisation. Graphene can be manufactured in
ways that are low cost and high return.

GLOBAL MARKET
Even though graphene has only been on the market for a few short years, the global market for
graphene and its products has risen steadily since graphene was first isolated in 2004 by
Novoselov. With new products and uses being created the net worth of graphene has reached an
approximate $10 million dollars with most of the sales being concentrated into semiconductors, it is
expected to increase exponentially to 180 million by 2018 and even further if adapting graphene
into the silicon market. The great demand for graphene and future applications has encouraged
more manufacturers and suppliers throughout USA, Europe, and China.
SUPPLY
According to a US geologic survey in 2012, found that China had over half of the world s
graphite supply located in their mines. The leading governments of the world have become aware
of the technological importance of graphite was transformed recently from an academic material to
an important material. China has acted upon this by raising the tax on exported graphite leading to
an increase in graphite cost worldwide. Due to graphene being only one layer of carbon atoms, most
graphene products can be created with a fraction of a gram of graphite therefore one single graphite
mine could provide the world with graphene.
RESEARCH
Many big name technology companies have already started to experiment with graphene such as
IBM, Samsung, and Sandisk only small sections of their businesses have to do with graphene while

The textbooks need to set out many more classroom activities and exercises. The greatest need is
for the teachers books to be in Swahili. This would be in line with most other countries where the
teachers materials are in the native language, or L1. For instance, in England teachers who teach
French have all their teachers materials in English. This is essential if they are to understand the
instructions and explanations. It is pretentious and suicidal in Tanzania to continue to give the
teachers materials in English when Swahili is the commonly understood language. 2
Another problem is the lack of differentiation between the pupils and the allocation of teachers.
There is urgent need to differentiate between the younger pupils and the older pupils; partly
because of the pupils developmental stages but also because of the allocation of teachers. Thus
pre primary, Standard I and Standard II pupils have teachers who are with them all day long and
the teachers allocated to those pupils tend to have lesser subject skills than those teachers allocated
to older pupils. The older pupils are taught English by teachers who have some subject knowledge,
but who only teach for time tabled 40 minute periods. These two categories deserve urgent, separate
attention. Pre primary, Standard I and Standard II pupils are only just beginning to gain literacy and
numeracy skills in

Examples Of Racism In America Today
Racism Live!
How could an individual describe racism in America today? One could describe it as systematic.
The process brought on by hundreds of years of oppression because of a superiority complex. It is
the removal of basic rights and enslavement. It is the forced labor of a race to build a country that
would not acknowledge them as people, only property. That was America in its most unethical
form; it is the reason there are still problems today. Without out fully acknowledging the history of
America s past, the country cannot fully understand the racism that is going on today, such as the
mass incarceration of the African Americanpopulation and the killing of innocent black lives.
Those are facets of racism in America today. To... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Pros And Cons Of Political Movements
We tend to think of politics as very contentious. Of course, most controversies we hear about on the
news are mainly focused on politics. Political life can actually be defined by saying that it consists
more of ceremonies, consultations, bureaucratic process, attending associational meetings, and
reading and publishing newspapers, asking officials for favors... (Tilly and Tarrow 2006: 437).
Movements have some similarities with contentious politicsand tend to be mistaken for it. But if
we look for the definition of social movements in its historical and social context, we would find
that they are defined as persistent and organized effort on the par of a relatively large number of
people either to bring about or to resist social change (Defronzo,... Show more content on

The citizens. Those citizens need to be unsatisfied about the situation, this frustration is what will
lead them to take the decision to put words into action and look for a change. This lack of
satisfaction will lead to the popular uprising in a country. Then come the dissident elite political
movements, which are the groups that lead that unsatisfied population. These political movements
are the results of the gathering of some people who are against the political situation, especially in
authoritarian regimes. One of the most important factors for a political movement to be successful is
that it should have a unified goal. Having only one purpose that everyone striving for can make a
change. Otherwise, if the population itself isn t sure about what it wants, how can they make it
happen? Also, if there is no political crisis, there is no room for a political movement. Therefore, a
severe political crisis will make the movement act surely and rapidly. And finally, for the political
movement to be able to bring about any change in a country, there must be a permissive world
context. International actors can easily influence an on going

The Development Of Mathematical Psychology
Psychology established into a mathematical discipline through a series of events during history.
This establishment led to the development of mathematical psychology; a field encompassing
empirical methodology (Benjafield, 2015). Furthermore, through the implementation of math in
psychology, findings from previous and current studies of psychologyinfluenced the plethora of
knowledge available today directly impacting society s understanding and application of
psychological phenomena. This is articulated through mathematical ideas originating from the
ancient Greeks, which inspired further research in the field abundantly, throughout the past three
centuries(18th to 21st) (Benjafield, 2015). Specifically, ideas from Euclid in ancient Greece inspired
Gustav Fechner to develop mathematical concepts in his formation of psychophysics (Zudini,
2011). In the 18th century, arguments regarding the implementation of math in sciencewere
becoming a common query. The field of psychometrics began during this period and early
psychologists like Ernst Weber began developing relationships between mathematical concepts
(Benjafield, 2015). During the 19th century, Gustav Fechner developed his field of psychophysics
and inspired several future psychologists to continue his work and develop their own ideas of
mathematical psychology (Benjafield, 2015; Robinson, 2010). Developments in this field
instigated the notion of using experimental psychology during World War I, and the 1950s 1970s

King Jr Dream
Martin Luther King Jr.: Who Was He? If you can t fly, then run, if you can t run, then walk, if
you can t walk, then crawl, but whatever you do, you have to keep moving forward. ( King )
This quote is true because if we never move forward and only go back or stay put, then we never
achieve our goals in life. I believe that we need to live out this quote of Martin Luther King. He
had a dream and his dream inspired many, encouraged peace, and we, as students, teachers, and
parents, still play a role in living out his dream in our lives today. There comes a time when one
must take a position that is neither safe, nor political, nor popular, but he must take it because
his conscious tells him it s right. is a quote I believe Dr. King lived by most of his life. He was
bullied as a kid because of his race and skin color, but he always pulled through. As he got older,
he became an inspiration in the colored community. He stood up for what he believed in and never
backed down. He opened the eyes... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

  • 3. The Cab Rank Rule Research Essay Introduction Australia has taken from English Law in adopting the cab rank rule, encoded in The Victorian Bar Incorporated Practice Rules 2009 (Vic). This essay will discuss the application of the rule, the strengths and weaknesses and will conclude to discuss why the rule should remain an integral part of the Bar despite many calls for its abolition. What is the cab rank principle ? The cab rank rule states that a lawyer practicing solely as a barrister must accept a brief in a field they profess to practice. Barristers are professionally bound by this duty if the brief is in the barrister s capacity, skill and expertise; the barrister is available to appear and is not committed to other engagements which may inhibit ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The second rationale behind the cab rank rule is that is protects barristers from adverse consequences that could arise from accepting a contentious brief. A barrister may be subjected to public scrutiny or criticism from those who believe the barrister is sympathizing with a repugnant criminal. Yet, with the existence of the cab rank rule, the obligation to accept the brief provides the barrister with a justification. In theory, this is an essential strength of the cab rank rule, however, in practice in may be redundant. This rationale is on the premise that the layperson is aware of the cab rank rule, a proposition that is far from the truth. In 2010, Brian Walters, a QC, was running for the Greens and his Labor opponent attacked him for once taking a brief for a brown coal company. The fact that a politician is not aware of the cab rank rule suggests that members of the general public would also be unaware of the rule, thereby denying barristers the protection the rule purports to give. Lastly, a barrister must refuse to accept a brief if they would be placed in a conflict of interest or would otherwise be detrimental to the administration of justice. However, the barrister holding strong moral views inconsistent with the subject matter is not reasonable ground to refuse a brief. If the client still wishes to proceed despite the barrister s ... Being able to have the opportunity to thrive in school spirit and to be able to build lifelong friendships has allowed me to cherish my high school experience. Even though being a cheerleader consists of many responsibilities and events; my most favored school experience is being a part of the schools organized pep rallies. Pep rallies are memorable to me because it is a couple times out of the school year that each student comes together to support and encourage our own fellow students. By encouraging students of all ages to be apart of this experience is important to me, because seeing each student happy in sight of their school is inspiring. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Martin Luther King And The Civil Rights Movement Martin Luther King remains one of the most controversial historical figures of the 20th century. Historians and modern politicians alike, challenge his contributions to the Civil Rights Movement and the legitimacy of his leadership. While King is traditionally presented as a leader of the movement, Ella Baker, an African AmericanCivil Rights activists, questions this convention and claims the [Civil Rights] movement made Martin. Furthermore, often portrayed as the decisive factor of social change, King s leadership and significance in the Civil Rights Movement is largely overemphasized and his exaggerated historical importance, detracts from the myriad of social factors and local movements that propelled social change. Although Martin... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Moreover, the true start of the Civil Rights Movement began with the Emmett Till Case, as it was a tipping point for the Civil Rights movement and revealed the discrimination that oppressed African American. Media was a medium in which African Americans can expose the evil and oppression of racial discrimination in America, and the media was to which King owed much of his social influence and publicity. Martin Luther king played a central role in mobilising African American Communities for national activism through his leadership in religious communities and activism such as the National Council of Churches and the Montgomery Improvement Association; however, his leadership in the movement was largely shaped by local grassroot movements, which played far greater roles in national protest and activism as demonstrated by Nashville sit ins and boycotts. Similarly to the events in Montgomery, the Nashville Sit ins were led primarily by students and local activists. The grassroots leaders and students who founded the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee acted upon their own initiative, and although the movement often called upon King s leadership and oratory skills, the movement was primarily guided by self reliant grassroots leaders. Furthermore, the students had other sources of tactical and ideological inspiration such as Rosa parks and E.D. Nixon. King used ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Antioxidant and Anti-Inflammatory Properties of Lunasin Antioxidant and Anti inflammatory Properties of Lunasin: Experimental, clinical and epidemiological studies have revealed that chronic inflammation is involved in the development of approximately 15 20% of malignancies worldwide52, being clearly associated with increased risk of cancer and cancer progression53. It is believed that persistent inflammatory cells recruitment, repeated generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), pro inflammatory mediators and continued proliferation of genomically unstable cells contribute to neoplasic transformation which ultimately result in tumor invasion and metastasis54. Determination of anti inflammatory and/or antioxidative properties has been proposed as a good indicator for screening any anticancerous agents55,56. Oxidative stress and inflammation are two of the most critical factors implicated in carcinogenesis and other degenerative disorders such as colon cancer and inflammatory bowel diseases respectively. Hernandez Ledesma and co worker investigated how lunasin, affect these factors. Lunasin inhibits linoleic acid oxidation and acts as 2, 20 azino bis (3 ethylbenzothiazoline 6 sulfonic acid) (ABTS) diammonium salt radical scavenger. Furthermore, using Lipopolysaccharides (LPS) stimulated RAW 264.7 macrophages, lunasin reduced the production of ROS by LPS induced macrophages in a significant dose dependent manner. Learning Final Integrative Paper Aisha Khawaja 12 Khawaja 1 Running head: DISTINCTIONS BETWEEN CLASSICAL AND OPERANT CONDITIONING Distinctions between classical and operant conditioning Aisha Khawaja New Jersey City University Khawaja 2 Running head: DISTINCTIONS BETWEEN CLASSICAL AND OPERANT CONDITIONING Abstract There are many differences between classical and operant conditioning that will be discussed in this paper. These two types of conditioning are often misinterpreted by many individuals; therefore, it is important to distinguish the two. Learning the different ways animals function and the new behaviors they adapt to are of interest to both Ivan Pavlov and Edward Thorndike. .Sex differences are measured and taken in consideration in both kinds of conditioning processes. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For instance, a toddler who burns his hand on a cooking stove will be less likely to come near it next time, remembering how he got burnt from it. Another form of punishment is when a behavior ends on a desirable event. An example of this is when a boy pulls his sister s hair and is given a time out, which has lost his privilege to watch TV. The boy has learnt a lesson because he won t dare to even touch his sister s hair remembering he had lost his privilege to watch TV. Classical conditioning deals with involuntary responses, primarily involving emotions, whereas, operant conditioning deals with voluntary responses that are active behaviors operating within the environment. Compared to operant conditioning, classical conditioning is more passive because in operant conditioning, learners are either getting rewarded for something or punished for something, which keeps the process active. Organisms experience a consequence despite of the fact they have learned the conditioned response. On the other hand, in operant conditioning, the consequence is dependent on the likelihood of the organism reacting to the response. Khawaja 5 Running head: DISTINCTIONS BETWEEN CLASSICAL AND OPERANT CONDITIONING How do you determine the type of conditioning, whether it is classical or operant? Focusing on the outcome or consequence is the key to determining between the two because if the outcome occurs regardless of a response to be shown, then the paradigm is ... • 8. America s Most Important Pastime America s Most Important Pastime Today men and women live equal lives. They have the same opportunities when it comes to jobs, voting, education, and practically any other entitlement that comes to mind. According to the Constitution, equality for women came about in 1920. That was the year women received the right to vote, and in their eyes received the right to be seen as an equal instead of a lesser person. However, to the dismay of many women, that idea was not entirely true. Women were still viewed differently than men by the public. This difference in perception can be seen by focusing on the job opportunities for a woman through the 1920s and up until World War II. Before World War II women were not supposed to work in the factories, instead they were supposed to work at home. During World War II however, many workingmen were drafted into the army, thus creating the necessity for women to step in and work in the factories and other higher class jobs. Thrusting women into the working class emphatically changed the ideology that men and women were not equal, however, I argue that the greatest change of mind was not created by the women working in the factories, but by the women who were elected to substitute in to keep the game of baseball afloat. The female athletes who played baseball during World War II were brought in as a last resort to save baseball, forced to fulfill stereotypes, and taught how to act, but were still persevered through all of those strikes ... • 9. Meursault s Indifference in The Stranger, by Albert Camus In The Stranger, Albert Camus allows the main character to tell the story in order to give the reader an experience of his own. Obviously, with a novel also comes language, which Camus incorporates cleverly as a way to indirectly illustrate Meursault s thoughts about certain situations. Although the novel represents a postmodern setting, the author shifts the overall meaning. In The Stranger, Camus applies a unique literary style as a power that deflects blame from Meursault, the antiheroic character. In order to disclaim the fault of Meursault, Camus incorporates several instances in which he leaves a greater sense of authority to nonliving objects, while further drawing attention away from the main character. Based on the implication of... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Furthermore, he covers the Arab s intentions when talking about the same blade that persists in bringing Meursault pain. He describes the stabbing as a scorching blade [that] slashes at [his] eyelashes and stabs at [his] stinging eyes (59). The moment that the blade brings itself to Meursault s face and slashes at his eyelashes, of course, is the point at which Meursault acknowledges that everything is beginning to reel. Finally, under the influence of the sea s fiery breath and the sun s scorching attitude, Meursault admits that the trigger gave when reminiscing on the death of the Arab (59). Not until after he blames the trigger for the mishap does he use first person to describe the negative actions, as he shoots the Arab four more times. At this point, perhaps, he realizes his own fault within the situation as he continues to set himself in place for the remainder of part one. The simple sentences in The Stranger reveal Meursault s emotional detachment from society, while the more complex sentences are assigned to objects with authority. Throughout the entire novel, Meursault s simplicity and disinterest in the world can be identified with the incorporation of his simple statements. Especially in this particular passage, Meursault finds it unimportant to challenge himself in a way that makes sense. Although Meursault recognizes the sensibility of walking ... The Independent Record Labels of the 1950’s and 1960’s The Independent Record Labels of the 1950 s and 1960 s History of Music Production Eric Eller Throughout the 1950 s and 1960 s, a wave of new musical movements by independent record labels and new artists emerged in the United States. This movement is captured in the stories of those label creators and owners, and in the turbulent journey through their successes and failures. The first emergence was fueled by multiple factors: competitive economic circumstances, up and coming local musical talent in conjunction with the independent labels and studio owners, and the commercially viable musical interest and curiosity of consumers in these local artists. An article poses another causative factor that makes sense: when rock and roll... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Philips would take a while to realize that a huge prospect was about to enter his life and studio. Elvis Presley, a young truck driver, had come in to record two songs at a cost of $8 as a birthday present for his mother. Philips was actually out of the office so his secretary Marion Keisker recorded Presley. Foreseeing talent, Keisker put aside a copy of the acetate master. Keisker continued to advocate to Philips the idea of investing in Presley s commercially promising musical potential. Philips eventually agreed to give Presley a try and matched him up with local guitarist Scotty Moore and bass player Bill Black. This group became quite successful, and together, under the direction of Philips, helped to influence and redefine the rockabilly genre of music at the time. It shows Sun s success that by 61, Phillips was able to buy a Presto 900 P recorder. Elvis Presley s presence at the label allowed Philips to once again upgrade his system, this time opting for a Tube 76 D broadcast console and two new Ampex 350 tape recorders. The growing sophistication of his studio rig is a testimony to the success that he accomplished with such sensations as Presley. Hurricane Impact On The Hurricane There are times when I was out in [the rain] that I had to hold my hand over my mouth and nose just to breath. . . because it was falling at times like being in a waterfall (Halverson, par. 5). Those are the words of William Whitehead, a sheriff from Lovingston, Virginia in charge of recovery and rescue from Hurricane Camille. The hurricane affected the lives of everyone living in the area; however, the hurricane did not only affect the people. The hurricane affected the developed area as well. The effects of Hurricane Camille began immediately, many people lost solely their homes, while others lost everything. Without doubt, Hurricane Camille, was a devastating costly event for the Gulf Coast. Tropical Storm Camille began forming on August 14, 1969 in the Cayman Islands (45 Years Later: Remembering Hurricane Camille s Deadly Landfall, Aftermath, par. 5). Before hitting the United States, Camille passed Cuba as rapidly increasing wind speed. Because of a fast drop in pressure, tropical storm Camille became Hurricane Camille. The hurricane hit Mississippi on the night of August 17, 1969 (1969 Hurricane Camille, par. 2). Hitting Cuba caused Camille to weaken when it returned to the Gulf of Mexico (par. 3). • 15. Puritan Religious Values French historian, Alexis de Tocqueville once said, methinks I see the destiny of America embodied in the first Puritan who landed on those shores. In many ways this statement still remains true. The Puritans came to the New World in the late 17th century with their unique religion that was founded to reform the impure nature of the Church of England. Therefore, their culture was one of simplicity both in their religion and in their lives. The Puritans were particularly God fearing because of their belief in Predestination and due to this, in fear of leisure and idleness. The Puritans remained the dominant cultural influence in the New World until the 19th century. Though the Puritanfaith eventually died out, the legacy of their theological ideals have lived on in the values that are quintessentially associated with being American today. American culture has inherited from the Puritans a strong work ethic, an appreciation for education, and a focus on the sins of others. The Puritan belief in predestination provoked a perpetual search for outward signs of salvation. This anxiety in turn inspired a strong work ethic that remains today as characteristically American. Doing hard work and performing good deeds were signs that someone was one of the few elect, which creates an internal, strong held correlation between success and salvation. This approach tends to insulate managers from the frictions of the marketplace because costs, not market prices, affect the revenues of the supplying division. 4. Cost and price information are often useful starting points in the negotiation process. Prices that the buying division would pay to purchase products from the outside market serves as a ceiling above which the buying division would be unwilling to buy. This essay is a case study analysis that uses the case Ban on Tobacco Ads and talks about the conflict of interests between tobacco producers and the Government of India. In Feb 2001 the Government of India published the news on tabling a bill that bans Tobacco companies on advertising cigarettes and sponsoring the sports and other cultural events. (1) There are several arguments that support the Government s decision: 1.Protection of people s health. As World Health Organization states that the 3 million deaths in 1990 occurred as a result of smoking and in 1998 it raised to 4.023 million. 2.Preventing the children aged 14 24 years from being smokers. According to internal document from R J Reynolds (1998) the bright advertising of the cigarettes that had a camel s picture on the packing was attractive to children and stimulated teenage smoking. 3.Contributions of cigarettes to the budget of India is 0.14% versus the health costs which account for 0.21%. 4.Provision of employment by the tobacco industry is an illusion because those who will not be employed in the tobacco field will be employed somewhere else and will be more labor intensive. 5.Complete bans on the tobacco products give a better decrease in tobacco consumption. This is evident in the investigation of UK s Department of Health (1992) which found out that the banning of advertising resulted in fall of smoking. Although he worked a variety of professions, writing seemed to be the one he enjoyed best. Thoreau even isolated himself in the woods for two years and wrote about it in Walden, which is a text reflecting on simple living. In an excerpt of Walden called Where I Lived, and What I Lived For Thoreau argues that every individual should follow the beat of their own drum. In the beginning of paragraph seven Thoreau believes we should spend one day as deliberately as nature (280). To emphasize his point, Thoreau uses anaphora throughout paragraph seven, repeating the word let several times. Let, a verb, means to not prevent or forbid; allow. By repeating the verb, Thoreau puts great emphasis on the phrases following let . Thoreau wants people to know that they are allowed to live life simply. They are allowed to wake and fast or breakfast, they are allowed to let company come and go, they are allowed to let the bells ring and the children cry. People should ignore what other people think, or want and focus on what they think, or want. Biden planned his five day visit to meet with Prime Minister Enda Kenny to discuss Irish American relations, and to address the Irish people about the value of global inclusiveness. Throughout his speech, Biden uses different rhetorical strategies that aim to unify the Irish and American people. Biden s arrival to Ireland occurs at a time when immigration is heavily debated, and right before the world s largest pride parade in Dublin. Strategically, his words express the similarities between Ireland and America, by connecting the two nations on one shared value of equality. In fact, it is society that has stopped the disabled from reaching success. 54 million people suffer from some sort of disability. Whether that is mental, physical, or emotional. It was believed long ago that people who suffered with disabilities were said to have been demonic. Due to these beliefs, many children and adults were treated with utter disrespect and harmed. This discrimination dates all the way back to 1981. Ultimately, this means that someone is defined by his or her disability. Some people who struggle with a disability consider it to be rude when others do not believe they can accomplish something in which others are able to accomplish. In essence though, the main purpose of war is to protect or enhance the liberties of the people and their families fighting. Due to the complex and utter horrific experiences that happen during battle, naturally people want to dedicate a long standing piece of work to honor those who have endured those traumatic experiences for the greater good. Two examples of art being centered around war are the Star Spangled Banner, by Francis Scott Key, and a sculpture entitled The Fountain of Eternal Life, by Marshall Fredericks. When these two works are broken down into their key elements it is apparent that there are key similarities between the images these works create, and the reasons they were created; in addition to their connection to civil liberties. One must consider the differences between the works as well, such as the mediums in which they were created, the theme of the works, and what they were dedicated to. To be concise, both Key and Fredericks created two extremely different works of art that have overlapping ideals, and have a strong connection to civil liberties. Civil liberties are the basic human rightsguaranteed to every person. When Victor Frankenstein seeks to fulfill his divine desire to become the creator of new life A new species would bless me as its creator and source; many happy and excellent natures would owe their being to me (33) he eliminates the inherent need for a feminine presence among society. By granting himself the title of sole creator of human life, Victor strips females of their primary role in the reproduction process a role which females have historically derived cultural power from. In his pursuit to create life that owes its existence entirely to himself, Victor also endeavors to steal this cultural power from females by eliminating its source. This establishment led to the development of mathematical psychology; a field encompassing empirical methodology (Benjafield, 2015). Furthermore, through the implementation of math in psychology, findings from previous and current studies of psychologyinfluenced the plethora of knowledge available today directly impacting society s understanding and application of psychological phenomena. This is articulated through mathematical ideas originating from the ancient Greeks, which inspired further research in the field abundantly, throughout the past three centuries(18th to 21st) (Benjafield, 2015). Specifically, ideas from Euclid in ancient Greece inspired Gustav Fechner to develop mathematical concepts in his formation of psychophysics (Zudini, 2011). In the 18th century, arguments regarding the implementation of math in sciencewere becoming a common query. The field of psychometrics began during this period and early psychologists like Ernst Weber began developing relationships between mathematical concepts (Benjafield, 2015). During the 19th century, Gustav Fechner developed his field of psychophysics and inspired several future psychologists to continue his work and develop their own ideas of mathematical psychology (Benjafield, 2015; Robinson, 2010).
