family members and neighbors selflessly help and be in community with people in
need. It is therefore no surprise that I discovered my passion for service and

Street Children and Orphans in Kenya in 2003 and the 2007 Brookside Freedom

Discussion:
The purpose behind this lab was to find out whether fresh or canned pineapple is
best suitable for making jelly. The hypothesis made at the beginning of this lab was
that fresh pineapple is better for jelly making since the fresh pineapple contains a
protease enzyme called bromelain. Enzymes are known for speeding up biological
reactions by breaking substances down or building new substance (SBE Activity,
n.d.). The bromelain in the fresh pineapple catalyzes the breakdown of collagen.
Collagen is found in jelly, more specifically gelatin (UCSB Science Line, n.d.). The
assumption that fresh pineapple was better for jelly was made because it was thought
that since fresh pineapples have more protease, which is an enzyme it will help ...
The physical property for fresh pineapple was that it was sweet, raw, and shaped
like a triangular prism. The canned pineapple on the other hand were sweet and
were cut in to very small and short thin slices. Fresh pineapples are much healthier
than canned pineapples. Fresh pineapple contains bromelain, vitamin C,
antioxidants, and carbohydrates and they help defend the immune system.
Bromelain helps with the digestive processes such as breaking down food, it
catalyzes the breakdown of collagen and that is why fresh pineapple prevents jelly
from forming. Canned pineapple is not as nutritious as fresh pineapple (NYU
Langone Medical Center, n.d.). Canned pineapple can be used with jelly or any
gelatin based type desert because during the canning process the pineapple is heated
up in order to kill all bacteria so that the pineapple does not rot and it can last very
long periods of time (The World s Healthiest Foods, n.d.). Therefore, the heat used on
the pineapples breaks down the collagen protein triple helix chains denaturing them,
changing their structure which means that it changes their function. After, the

3.1. DYES AND CHEMICALS
Six reactive azo dyes namely, Reactive Violet 5, Reactive Red 2, Reactive Orange 16,
Reactive Blue 4, Reactive Black 5 and Reactive Green 19A were generous gifts from
Colors India Inc. Pvt. Ltd. Ahmedabad, India. All these dyes were of industrial grade
and are widely used in textile industries. Reactive Violet 5 (vinyl sulfone as a reactive
group) and Reactive Red 2 (triazin as a reactive group) were used as model azo dyes
in this study. All required chemicals and solvents used in the study were of
analytical grade and were procured from popular chemical firms (SRL and S.D. Fine
Chemicals, Mumbai, India). Biochemical and physiological test kits were obtained
from Hi media, Mumbai, India. The TLC plates were purchased from Merck India
limited.
3.2. PREPARATION OF MEDIA AND REAGENTS
The Mineral Salts Medium (MSM) was prepared as per Brilon et al., (1981) with
some modifications. The MSM contained of following constituents (g/l):
Na2HPO4.2H2O (12.0), KH2PO4 (2.0), NH4NO3 (0.50), MgCl2.6H2O (0.10),
Ca(NO3)2.4H20 (0.050), FeCl2.4H20 (0.0075) with 10 ml of trace element
solution per liter. The trace element solution was prepared as follows (mg/l):
ZnSO4.7H2O (10.0), MnCl2.4H2O (3.0), CoCl2.6H2O (1.0), NiCl2.6H2O (2.0),
Na2MoO4.2H2O (3.0), H3BO3 (30.0), CuCl2.2H2O (1.0). Further, MSM was
blended with different concentrations of Reactive Violet 5 (100 mg/l) and Reactive
Red 2 (300 mg/l) and used throughout the study as a test medium and uninoculated

Courage . This program is a way for women to get together with others who have
gone through the same thing they have, and to be out in the wilderness to go through
different task like, rock climbing, canoeing, and simply just making their own
meals. All of these task will help the women learn the importance of their
responsibility for their self and can share with others in the group. All of these
women work together to overcome the violence that they have been a part of in new
ways, besides sitting in an office with a counselor. This can help them learn that you
do not always have to go and talk everything through, you can simply just go out into
the wilderness and work together to overcome this.
