GRP RAILWAY SOLUTIONS
Railway Stations
•  Platform construction hasn’t
changed much over the last 100
years.
•  Concrete, asphalt and steel are
proven and have great strength
and longevity.
•  Granite, vitrified tiles, etc have
been the only new introductions.
•  Other new materials have come
along but often have
drawbacks.
So what’s the problem?
•  Currently, many concrete
platforms now require
replacement as they have
reached the end of their service
life.
•  All platforms require regular
maintenance which can sap
resource and cause passenger
disruption.
•  Ignoring this need for
maintenance leads to hazardous
situations and uneven surfaces
that can cause accidents.
The stepping distance
•  Many platforms require stepping
distance re-gauging to improve
safety. This is due to change of
rolling stock, long term deflection
or in some cases even
subsidence.
Can’t we just use concrete and tiles
to update old platforms?
•  Concrete works are easy, just as
long as there aren’t any trains,
electricity or passengers around.
•  Works can require long
possession time.
•  Creates passenger movement
disruption.
•  Labour intensive and sometimes
requires machinery for material
handling.
•  No easy way to fix stepping
distances.
•  Regular maintenance continues.

What are Composites?
•  Composites are engineered products made from
two or more materials which have significantly
different characteristics to those of the individual
components.
•  Composites are used to raise performance levels,
address traditional material design limitations, and
enable the rapid development of new product
solutions.
What are they used for?
Industry
•  Composites are widely used in applications that require
chemical-resistance service such as ducts, grating, chemical
processing, oil and gas, and water/wastewater treatment.
Infrastructure

Slip Resistance – Meets BS 7976-2
The Pendulum DCoF test. The method is based on a swinging,
imitation heel (using a standardised rubber soling sample), which
sweeps over a set area of flooring in a controlled manner. The
slipperiness of the flooring has a direct and measurable effect on the
pendulum test value (PTV) given.
Research has confirmed the pendulum to be the most reliable and
accurate test, so The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has adopted
it as its standard test method for assessing floor slipperiness in both dry
and contaminated conditions.

Other features of GRP Platform - Heating
•  Snow and ice can cause serious problems in
cold areas. Drifting snow can coat
electrified rails, preventing trains from
drawing power and blocking lines, and snow
and ice on platforms can delay passengers
and cause accidents. Traditional methods of
snow and ice removal by station operators
such as manual sweeping and salting or
chemical de-icing cause accelerated
corrosion and deterioration of the platform.
•  Dura Platform can be specified with an
integral heating system to keep platforms
free of snow and ice in extreme weather
conditions.
Other features of GRP Platform – Lighting
•  Dura Platform can be fitted with
energy efficient LEDs to the front
edge of the caper unit, adjacent to
the white nosing, to help improve
visibility of the platform edge and
passenger safety.
•  The LEDs are available in both
single or double lighting strips in
white, blue or other colours and are
fully recessed so no trip hazard is
presented.
•  Other benefits include
maintenance savings, low overall
running costs and the instant
aesthetic impact, with platforms
appearing lighter and brighter

Stairs & Foot over bridges
What’s the problem?
•  Across the country, pedestrian
footbridges are in need of essential
works to ensure their safe use by foot
traffic.
•  Landings and treads need periodic
maintenance and replacement due
to the inherent issues with traditional
materials, such as degradation of
concrete and tiles; rusting of metal;
surfaces becoming slippery due to
build-up of organic material or lack of
compliance with updated legislation.
Solution: GRP Access systems
•  Dura Slab Structural Stair Treads are a new
concept developed in conjunction with
Abellio Greater Anglia (AGA) for
Wymondham Rail Station footbridge in
2015.
•  Dura Slab Structural Stair Treads are made
from FRP (Fibre Reinforced Plastic), and
incorporate a number of ground-breaking
features designed to reduce project costs
and installation times, thereby limiting
disruption to end users.

Case Study: Wymondham
•  The footbridge at Wymondham which serves as
an entry and exit point to the station, and as an
access route between the platforms, was badly in
need of refurbishment, with rotting timber and a
compromised structure providing potential “slip or
trip” risks for pedestrians.
•  AGA decided to embark on a project to refurbish
and upgrade the existing structure to provide a
better thoroughfare for pedestrians.
•  Not only was money saved by using Dura Slab
Structural Stair Treads due to lower labour costs,
fewer possessions and easier handling, but there
was less disruption for the consumer versus
traditional timber systems – and better still, the
new footbridge is designed for the future with a
life expectancy in excess of 60 years.

Composite (GRP) Railway Stations & Solutions

  • 2. Railway Stations •  Platform construction hasn’t changed much over the last 100 years. •  Concrete, asphalt and steel are proven and have great strength and longevity. •  Granite, vitrified tiles, etc have been the only new introductions. •  Other new materials have come along but often have drawbacks.
  • 3. So what’s the problem? •  Currently, many concrete platforms now require replacement as they have reached the end of their service life. •  All platforms require regular maintenance which can sap resource and cause passenger disruption. •  Ignoring this need for maintenance leads to hazardous situations and uneven surfaces that can cause accidents.
  • 4. The stepping distance •  Many platforms require stepping distance re-gauging to improve safety. This is due to change of rolling stock, long term deflection or in some cases even subsidence.
  • 5. Can’t we just use concrete and tiles to update old platforms? •  Concrete works are easy, just as long as there aren’t any trains, electricity or passengers around. •  Works can require long possession time. •  Creates passenger movement disruption. •  Labour intensive and sometimes requires machinery for material handling. •  No easy way to fix stepping distances. •  Regular maintenance continues.
  • 6. Solution Composite (GRP) Platform Composite products and structures including Station Platforms, Ballast Retention, Walkways, Raised Access Solutions and many more. Safe, durable and cost effective solutions designed to replace wood, metal and concrete. It overcomes all the challenges faced while using traditional materials. FASTER DEVELOPMENT. PUBLIC APPRECIATION.
  • 7. What are Composites? •  Composites are engineered products made from two or more materials which have significantly different characteristics to those of the individual components. •  Composites are used to raise performance levels, address traditional material design limitations, and enable the rapid development of new product solutions.
  • 8. What are they used for? Industry •  Composites are widely used in applications that require chemical-resistance service such as ducts, grating, chemical processing, oil and gas, and water/wastewater treatment. Infrastructure •  Composites are used all over the world to help construct and repair a wide variety of infrastructure applications, from buildings and bridges to roads and railways. Architecture •  The moulding freedom of composites has contributed to their popularity in decorative architectural applications, including cladding and building facades
  • 9. Range of GRP Resin Systems Isophthalic Polyester •  A high quality industrial grade which is standard on the vast majority of our product range. It features high levels of chemical resistance and fire retardancy. Orthophthalic Polyester •  A general purpose economic resin with good corrosion and chemical resistance that is standard for Grating mini mesh range to suit less harsh environments. Vinylester •  Enhanced chemical resistance, higher operating temperature and increased fatigue resistance. Available to special order only. Phenolic •  Enhanced fire and smoke properties for use in areas where fire resistance, low smoke and toxicity are important factors, such as rail tunnels and offshore platforms. Available to special order only.
  • 10. Emerging Trends for GRP •  GRP is well-proven construction material that has been in use for over 50 years in a variety of architectural and industrial environments to replace traditional building materials. •  The lightweight, high strength, corrosion resistant and low maintenance properties of GRP offer far more design freedom to Architects and Developers. •  Applications for GRP are huge – from Service Riser Grating to Walkways, Structures, Custom Fabrications and Trench Covers.
  • 11. Characteristics of GRP: GRP is an amazingly versatile material which has phenomenal potential across a wide spectrum of applications. Key properties include: Some other benefits: EXTREME LOAD CAPACITY POSSIBILITY OF COLOUR CODING EASY HANDLING ANTI THEFT LOCKING PRECISION FINISH

  • 13. Slip Resistance – Meets BS 7976-2 The Pendulum DCoF test. The method is based on a swinging, imitation heel (using a standardised rubber soling sample), which sweeps over a set area of flooring in a controlled manner. The slipperiness of the flooring has a direct and measurable effect on the pendulum test value (PTV) given. Research has confirmed the pendulum to be the most reliable and accurate test, so The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has adopted it as its standard test method for assessing floor slipperiness in both dry and contaminated conditions.

  • 28. Other features of GRP Platform - Heating •  Snow and ice can cause serious problems in cold areas. Drifting snow can coat electrified rails, preventing trains from drawing power and blocking lines, and snow and ice on platforms can delay passengers and cause accidents. Traditional methods of snow and ice removal by station operators such as manual sweeping and salting or chemical de-icing cause accelerated corrosion and deterioration of the platform. •  Dura Platform can be specified with an integral heating system to keep platforms free of snow and ice in extreme weather conditions.
  • 29. Other features of GRP Platform – Lighting •  Dura Platform can be fitted with energy efficient LEDs to the front edge of the caper unit, adjacent to the white nosing, to help improve visibility of the platform edge and passenger safety. •  The LEDs are available in both single or double lighting strips in white, blue or other colours and are fully recessed so no trip hazard is presented. •  Other benefits include maintenance savings, low overall running costs and the instant aesthetic impact, with platforms appearing lighter and brighter

  • 33. Case study 4: East Croydon
  • 34. Stairs & Foot over bridges What’s the problem? •  Across the country, pedestrian footbridges are in need of essential works to ensure their safe use by foot traffic. •  Landings and treads need periodic maintenance and replacement due to the inherent issues with traditional materials, such as degradation of concrete and tiles; rusting of metal; surfaces becoming slippery due to build-up of organic material or lack of compliance with updated legislation.
  • 35. Solution: GRP Access systems •  Dura Slab Structural Stair Treads are a new concept developed in conjunction with Abellio Greater Anglia (AGA) for Wymondham Rail Station footbridge in 2015. •  Dura Slab Structural Stair Treads are made from FRP (Fibre Reinforced Plastic), and incorporate a number of ground-breaking features designed to reduce project costs and installation times, thereby limiting disruption to end users.
  • 36. GRP Structural Stair Treads Built-in riser detail Anti-slip surface Lightweight GRP construction GRP Slab Structural Tread 90 GRP Slab Structural Tread 65 DDA compliant contrasting nosings Built-in fall to assist drainage
  • 37. Case Study: Wymondham •  The footbridge at Wymondham which serves as an entry and exit point to the station, and as an access route between the platforms, was badly in need of refurbishment, with rotting timber and a compromised structure providing potential “slip or trip” risks for pedestrians. •  AGA decided to embark on a project to refurbish and upgrade the existing structure to provide a better thoroughfare for pedestrians. •  Not only was money saved by using Dura Slab Structural Stair Treads due to lower labour costs, fewer possessions and easier handling, but there was less disruption for the consumer versus traditional timber systems – and better still, the new footbridge is designed for the future with a life expectancy in excess of 60 years.
