Mental health has been in the news quite a bit lately. Dozens of U.S. states are currently suing Meta for contributing to the youth mental health crisis by inserting addictive features into their products, while the U.S. Surgeon General is touring the nation to bring awareness to the growing epidemic of loneliness and isolation. The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits.
To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups.
Technology
For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did.
While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis.
Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad.
Age and Gender
When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying it’s good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same.
Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation that’s least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state they’re comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers.
Race Affects Attitudes
As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).

El sábado 11 de julio de 2009, en el auditorio del Archivo Histórico del
Guayas, se llevó a cabo el curso para profesores de economía, en base al libro,
Economía: Descubriendo la Escuela Austriaca de Economía Política, de autoría
de los Dres. Martín Krause, Adrian Ravier y Gabriel Zanotti.
Al curso asistieron más de 45 profesores de economía de diferentes colegios y
universidades de Guayaquil, los mismos que recibieron de forma gratuita un ejemplar del
libro.
La introduccíon y explicación del primer capitulo (La escasez) estuvo a cargo de la Econ. Dora de
Ampuero, Directora Ejecutiva del IEEP y editora del libro.
Los capitulo 2 y 3 del libro que tratan sobre la acción humana y el intercambio respectivamente,
fueron abordados por el Econ. Roberto Villacreses, Investigador Asociado al IEEP y catedrático
universitario.
Luego Pedro Romero Ph.D., explicó la importancia del comercio internacional, el origen
del dinero y el sistema bancario.
Por último el Econ. Joselo Andrade, expuso sobre empresarialidad y cuál debería ser el rol del
Estado según la concepción austriaca.

Por quinto año consecutivo, este espacio convoca desde el C.B.C. de la U.B.A. a la
participación activa, al intercambio de experiencias didácticas y al debate de ideas y
proyectos acerca de la Enseñanza Superior. Nos proponemos abordar, desde una
concepción plural y transdisciplinaria, el análisis de estrategias y herramientas para
optimizar los procesos de enseñanza y aprendizaje, como un desafío para la renovación de

Presentación de Trabajos: Se invita a quienes quieran participar con ponencias a enviarlas

del trabajo se comunicará vía correo electrónico, a quien haya enviado el trabajo.
Las trabajos deberán enviarse vía e-mail a jornadamd2009@gmail.com conteniendo:
- Un resumen con no más de 350 palabras (incluyendo autores e institución, domicilio y
correo electrónico), en el que consten:

Póster : deberá tener un tamaño de 90 cm x 110 cm y consignar Título, Autores,
Institución, Introducción, Objetivos, Metodología de Trabajo, Resultados y Conclusiones.
Comunicación Oral: tendrá una duración máxima de 10 minutos más 5 minutos para
preguntas y comentarios. Se podrá acompañar con material digital (Power Point, CD
interactivo, DVD, etc.) o diapositivas y retroproyector.
Las ponencias aceptadas se publicarán en las Memorias de la Jornada, en formato
electrónico.

2-Contar historias en clave TIC
A través de una metodología práctica, la propuesta busca promover el desarrollo de
competencias metodológicas y operativas sobre algunas herramientas tecnológicas para la
elaboración, edición y publicación de historias en la web a través de diversos lenguajes y
soportes.
De este modo, se explorarán las condiciones necesarias para la expresión de mensajes a
través de fotografías, sonidos y texto; así como la manera de combinarlos para optimizar su
potencial comunicativo. Como herramienta de publicación y socialización en la web, se
propone la exploración del freeware “Microsoft Photo story”.

3-La aplicación de Blogs en Escuelas Hospitalarias
El uso y aplicación de los blogs en las escuelas hospitalarias cobra un valor relevante y
significativo para toda la comunidad educativa. El curso apunta a que cada escuela
hospitalaria pueda tener presencia vitual a través de su blog y utilizar como recurso para sus
10. alumnos.
Esta capacitación cuya base es el curso virtual "El uso de los Blogs en educación" aporta
sugerencias concretas, usos posibles y enlaces a propuestas que permiten pensar
didácticamente en el uso de esta herramienta, en un contexto de análisis, reflexión e
intercambio entre los participantes y docentes.
