Productive routines allow students to develop their own sense of organization and structure in their
lives. I will have subjects color coded and organized throughout my classroom. After every lesson, I
will have students get out their assignment notebooks and write homework assignments and important
dates in it. This routine is a recap for students and reminds them what to take home, complete, or relay
any information to their parents. Other effective routines would consist of how students signal to get
attention, time allotted for quiet reading and reflection, when to go to the restroom or elsewhere, and
how they line up when leaving the classroom. I also believe students get a little off track over the
weekend, and I would set up a routine Monday morning to go over what we have learned and what is
to be expected in the classroom for the week. Students like consistency because they feel safe and
know what to expect each day. I would have a daily agenda, and how we move from one activity to

around him see the hat as an indication of his spirituality. This frustrates him, as he rejects any title
that one may give him concerning religion. In Nervous Shadow Walking Backwards, the author
describes the reason why this affects Haze so much by saying, In literature, a character s hat often
symbolizes identity, the selfhood of the character. Haze s hat is mistaken throughout the book as a
preacher s hat, an identity that he rejects (Bolton 91). Because of his desperation to escape this
reputation, Haze purchases a new hat that, counterintuitively, attracts the same comments as before. O
Connor uses this hat to symbolize the inability of Haze to escape the image he so intensely despises.

in Cry, The Beloved Country experiences many hardships and periods of confusion; yet, God
manifests himself in these situations by challenging him to stay faithful. As a religious leader in his
town, Kumalo feels the need to exhibit his strong faith and embody the life of a Christian. As he
encounters problem after problem, Kumalo begins to feel doubt and uncertainty about God s presence.
