June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

2. Tao Qian, Also Known As Tao Yuan-Ming, Was A Chinese Poet
Tao Qian, also known as Tao Yuan ming, was a Chinese poet of the Six Dynasties period. Tao
was well versed in the classics of Confucianism and Daoism, which is evident in his poetry.
However, he wasn t known for the extent of his knowledge but for his distinctive voice as a poet
of transition and reclusion. Throughout his life, he held and resigned several minor posts before
his ultimate decision to renounce public life and return to his gardens and fields (Owen 1996,
312). As the founder of the poetry of fields and gardens, Tao s writing revolves around natureas a
philosophy and as a way of life that embodies the simplicity of living in recluse, away from the
chaos of high society. He uses the philosophy of nature not only to retell... Show more content on

Many of Tao Qian s poems illustrate a life of farming and drinking wine, encompassing themes
that urge its audience to remove themselves from official life, move to the countryside, and take
up a cultivated life of drinking wine, writing poetry, and avoiding the complicated aspects of life
such as working in high society. Earlier scholars believed that Tao was neither Confucian nor
this worldly, neither egocentric nor defiant, neither gallant nor stubborn, Tao is contented, free
from the unnatural, he has got all Nature can offer (Lu 2017). It is evident in Tao Qian s poetry
that he utilized nature as a means to escape what reality had to offer, corruption and political
instability, as opposed to his own idea of utopia or a simple, easy life in recluse. Tao s An

history about the discovery of an otherworldly utopia in which the populace led an ideal existence
in harmony with nature, unaware of the outside world. Unlike reality at the time, where the
tension between the state and the individual had developed fully (Owen 1995, 309), Tao s Peach

5. Competition And Predation Play An Important Role
Coexistence has been happening among many species since the beginning of time throughout
nature. The way species exist is of great complexity as many factors such as: competition and
predation play an important role (Chase et al. 2002; Holt 1984; Paine 1966). Ecosystems,
communities and populations all face competition between their species. Studies are constantly
being done to show how different species survive together or die trying and what is it that they are
fighting to survive over. Different habitats, predator, prey, and so many other factors play a role in
the survival of species like protists. Many laboratory studies have been done on two protists,

The prey will go slam down on the ground in seconds and be devoured in minutes by the lion.
The lion is allelopathy at its best because there is competition over survival and territory with
animals of this nature. Territory can be a limited resource depending on the time of year and the
environment as a whole, trees and brush being chopped down pose a problem when it comes to
sneaking up on prey. Gause started experimenting on protists to observe their development and
observe their survival ability together (Gause). Paramecium can be found in many places: wet
areas like lakes and rivers or dry areas such as those of trees and soil. Gause set out to experiment
with Paramecium aurelia and Paramecium caudatum to determine if they fit the competitive
exclusion theory that he came up with (Gause 1935). The class was given both parameciums to
experiment with for the validity of coexistence. The competitive exclusion theory begs the
question, can two species coexist together over a resource or will one of them be driven to
extinction? Gause may have been the leader to start the protists experiment but he wasn t the only
one to question competition. Gill had questioned Gause s theory and decided to do his own
research. Gill experimented on two species pure and mixed cultures of Paramecium aurelia. After
experimenting Gill discovered that Paramecium aurelia did not match up to Gause s theory and did
not compete over a limited resource instead

In What Way Does The Final Scene of Act 1 Demonstrate Dramatically The
Tensions Between The Characters Which Will Lead to Tragedy?
The final scene of Act 1 in Arthur Miller s A View From The Bridge demonstrates dramatic
tension in a variety of different ways. It is made fairly clear from the final moments of the act
when Alfieri returns to the stage that the play will end in tragedy. Miller shows this through
dialogue between the characters and in the plentiful stage directions with which he liberally
sprinkles the text. There is a range of conflict present in the scene. The central conflict however,
involves Eddie s unacknowledged jealousy towards Rodolfo; this is the strongest.
The above dispute is clearly visible when ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Alfieri s interlude, between
Eddie leaving his office and the lights coming up on the apartment behind, indicates quite
clearly the play will end in tragedy. Alfieri says I could see every step coming, step after step, like a
dark figure walking down a hall toward a certain door . He adds that he even asked an old, wise
woman what she thought he should do. The answer she gave was pray for him . It is obvious that
Eddie is extremely vulnerable.
Alfieri guesses how Eddie feels for Catherine and gently suggests that he needs to let go.
Unfortunately Eddie cannot bring himself to admit that he loves Catherine like Beatrice and
therefore does not benefit from Alfieri s advice. He reacts furiously . He desperately tries to invent
problems in his mind why Rodolfo cannot marry Catherine because deep down he is jealous.
The next section of the scene opens with the family finishing dinner.
Other tensions become more apparent in this scene. A prime example is that between Eddie and
Beatrice. Their conflict is made apparent as
Beatrice desperately tries to keep the conversation going, sensing
Eddie s growing anger. Instead of trying to suppress his annoyance at
Rodolfo he erupts at the cousins and scorns Beatrice.
Sure. How you gonna catch sardines on a hook?

to their very different personalities.

development of young children but also in educating young children.
Philosophies
Maria Montessori approach had respect for children as individuals. She monitored the children s
reaction through their primary senses such as self confidence and independence and their natural
curiosity to learn. She observed in young children the situation she called absorbent mind.
Children learn from their everyday surroundings. The most important period of life is not the age

The products of interest within this experiment are 2 methyl 1 butene and 2 methyl 2 butene
from sulfuric acid and phosphoric acid catalyzed dehydration of 2 methyl 2 butanol. The
reaction mixture was then separated into its separate alkene components by steam distillation
and then analyzed by gas chromatography (GC), Infrared Radiation (IR) spectroscopy, and

that is able to characterize if specific compounds exist in a reaction mixture, even if they are in
low quantities, assess how much of a compound exists within a reaction mixture relative to other
components within the sample, and determine the purity of an isolated product. In the case of

or thought unnecessary. In the book Feminism is for Everybody, the movement of feminism and
why it still exists today is explained. One of the main aspects that keep feminism alive is
sisterhood females bonding together for a like purpose. In chapter three, Sisterhood is Still

A chronologically ordered format gives the audience context of how feminism developed so they
can understand в€’в€’where it stands today. After Hooks discusses the effects of feminism in the
early 70s with the help of an anecdote, she proceeds to write about what happens to the movement
later on. As more women begin to opportunistically lay claim to feminism in the 80s without
undergoing the feminist consciousness raising... (16). In the 80s more divisions between feminists
came up due to differences in class and some walked away from feminism. What happened in the
80s is then connected to present day. Political solidarity between woman which had been the force
putting in place positive change has been and is now consistently undermined and threatened
(17). By giving background information, Hooks is able to explain how sisterhood is still strong
but is endangered by class divisions. Overall, the chapter shows where feminists succeeded and
where it had problems what worked and what did not. The evolution of feminism is explained in a

the colors are not that vivid compare to the advertisement in todays world. Therefore, one can

advertisement seems to be abstract since the proportion of the candy is not very realistic. Candy

individuals from having a bad breath in a formal situation. It also targets the people who are

Yanomamo Paper Assignment
Napoleon Chagnon has spent about 60 months since 1964 studying the foot people of the Amazon
Basin known as the Yanomamo. In his ethnography, Yanomamo, he describes all of the events of
his stay in the Venezuelan jungle. He describes the hideous appearance of the Yanomamo men
when first meeting them, and their never ending demands for Chagnon s foreign goods, including
his food. There are many issues that arise when considering Chagnon s Yanomamo study. The
withholding of genealogical information by the tribesmen, and how Chagnon was able to obtain his
information is an interesting and significant aspect of this study. Why did Chagnon feel that this

He even increased the reward given to villagers who were willing to give genealogical
information and therefore created a rapid craze of helping villagers. This way, they were
competing to give him information for their eventual rewards, not plotting against him. It took
him months to compile his accurate collection of genealogical data, and even after gathering
most of it, he still needed his friend, Rerebawa, to double check most of it for him. He even went
so far as to seek out other villages who had bad relations with Bisaasi teri to break the name taboo
and give away names.
Chagnon felt that the most important aspect of his research in Bisaasi teri was to collect
genealogical information and organize the marriages and relations between the villagers. This
turned out to be his most difficult task, but nonetheless the most useful. He tells in the very
beginning of the ethnography that the Yanomamo are considered a very primitive societal
organization of human beings. The most obvious sign of primitive human life is simply the way the
dress. In addition, their fickle nature, lack of industry, methods of hunting and gathering, and
political organization, contribute to their primitive nature.
As proved by anthropologists, primitive human life is essentially based on genealogy, marriage
practices, kinship, settlement arrangements and political affairs. It was through

Throughout the six weeks an estimated 300,000 soldiers (Controversial, as there are different

most destructive mass murders in history (staff, 2009). Nanjing, one of China s greatest ancient
capitals located in eastern china is found in Jiangsu, China. Nanjing has a prominent place in
Chinese history and culture having served as the capital of various Chinese dynasties, kingdoms
and republican governments. Zhu Yuanzhang, the first emperor of the Ming Dynasty (1378 1644)

dynastic capital in 1368. Emerging as the political and cultural center of southeastern China at the
time, it ultimately ended in a disaster and stained Chinese history forever (Kuo, 2016). Nanjing at
the time with about a population of approximately a million was a prime target when Japan

16. Colin Ferguson Research Paper
December 7, 1993, Colin Ferguson began to execute passengers randomly on a New York
commuter train (Who is Colin Ferguson, 2017). After killing six passengers and injuring nineteen
others, he was finally subdued by three of the other passengers (Who is Colin Ferguson, 2017).
Colin Ferguson was born January 14, 1959 in Kingston, Jamaica. His father Von Herman was the
managing director for Hercules Agencies, a large pharmaceutical company. Mr. Herman was
highly regarded and recognized as a prominent businessman in Jamaica (Montaldo, 2017).
Ferguson had four brothers and afforded the privileges that wealth offers in an extreme poverty
area. He graduated from Calabar High School in 1969 with a grade average that was ranked in
the top third of his class (Montaldo, 2017). In 1978 his father was killed in a car crash and a
short time later his mother died from cancer. He would then suffer the loss of the family fortune.
At 23 years old Ferguson left Kingston, Jamaica and moved to the U.S. on a Visitor s Visa
(Montaldo, 2017). Jamaican culture is different than American cultures. A study completed in
1997 concerning 225 Jamaican adults, it was found that Jamaican men were considered coarse,
reckless, aggressive, lazy, tough, arrogant, stern, disorderly, robust, rigid, autocratic, courageous,
and hard headed (Carpenter Walters, 2011). The only job Ferguson could get were low paying
and menial. He blamed racist Americans for this problem (Montaldo, 2017). He got married to an
American citizen who was also of Jamaican descent. They soon moved to Long Island but
Ferguson continued to be frustrated with reports of loss of temper and outrage and racial bigotry
toward white people who he felt stood in his way (Montaldo, 2017). In Jamaica he was born into
one of the top families in Kingston. Government and top military members attended his father s
funeral but in America he was not given this honor which appeared to cause him to continue his
hatred toward white people (Montaldo, 2017). His marriage did not last due to his violent nature.
Shortly after his divorce Ferguson was injured at work and he started attending Nassau Community
College with a strong academic performance. However, one

17. Marx Theory Of Reserve Army Of Labour
, rather than reducing migration, economic development increases migration. Marx theory of
reserve army of labour is central to what he has to say about capitalism and workers wages; the
proletariat. Most migrants in society today migrate to the US and end up working in factories
where they manage machinery. Marx theory illustrates how capitalist industries consists of two
parts the machinery and the workers. Capitalist industries expand by sukingin their workers to
operate the machinery, upping their wages and attracting more of them. By doing so the worker is
necessary to satisfy the needs of the machinery, rather than industry existing to satisfy the worker s
need. This process illustrates how capitalismexploits workers for their labour. Yet migration
provides the capitalist industry with a wide array of wage labour. Scholar Jeff Manza explains
how higher pay depends on whether or not the product is profitable for the capitalist who owns the
machinery to employ workers to operate. Marx draws the conclusion that capitalism is the first
economic system in which there can be too many workers, with a large sum coming from migration
as migrants are in search of economic development.
The influx of migrants to the US continues to create a class of uneducated proletarians who remain
unconscious of their role in unpaid labour. Immigrants become the primary source of cheap labour.

Neoliberalism: Effects of Neoliberal Policies on Kenyan Workers
There have been economic transitions across the world, characterized by various changes in
industrialization, trading methods and policies. These changes are normally controlled by political
systems. Capitalism is the most common system in the current world economy. As defined by
Bhattacharya (2015), capitalism is a political and economic system in which the industry and
trade of a country are controlled by private profit oriented owners instead of the state. Prior to
revolution of capitalism, pre capitalist modes of production dominated the economy in most of the
world countries. The pre capitalist modes of production were chattel slavery and feudalism. As
argued by Marx (1867), primitive accumulation led to the transformation of pre capitalist to
capitalist modes of production. According to Bhattacharya (2015), there are two types of
capitalism. They are liberal and neoliberal capitalism. Liberal capitalism is a type of capitalism in
which economic and political policies favor freedom of individuals, governments and non
governmental organizations, social and economic institutions, promoting individual rights and civil
liberties, and unrestricted development in all spheres of human endeavor. Neoliberal capitalism is
a modified form of liberal capitalism in which the political and economic

19. The Role Of The Executive Has Always Remained A...
The role of the executive has always remained a controversial issue. In some countries, the
executive may champion conservative beliefs, pushing his country towards free market economies,
privatization and military spending. In another country, the executive might have been a populist
leader who came to power by mobilizing the masses, championing labor rights and engaging in land
redistribution. As Fukyuyama references to in his piece, Do Institutions Really Matter ,
nevertheless, in developed democracies, the role of institutions, such as low levels of corruption
and accountable government, have ensured these executives will exercise their power within limit.
Another institution such as regular elections provides the people with a fair process of choosing
representation. Consequently, it is assumed that institutions are of the utmost importance to a
society, as they often dictate the political, economic and social ramifications for that country.
Therefore, if institutions do indeed matter, is executive leadership helpful or detrimental to their
role and effectiveness? We will examine presidential democracies, in particular the United States, a
prime example where the Chief of State has much more executive influence than in any other form
of democracy, to determine whether this leadership strengthens or mitigates the effects of
institutions. It is important to understand that not only does the president have significant power in
this system, but also that this nation

22. Creatine Literature Review
Literature Review: Creatine Supplementation
Introduction
Creatine is a natural substance that occurs in the body, it is also a supplement that has been tested
by numerus athletes over the years to see whether it has a positive effect on performance. However,
there is anecdotal evidence that suggests creatine supplementation may be the cause of negative
side effects such as dehydration, the increase of muscle cramping and an increase in blood pressure.
One way the supplementation of creatine can improve performance is by aiding the resynthesise
ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate
) stores within the body in order to produce energy at a quicker rate
therefore the most common athletes to take creatine are high intensity power athletes who are
repeated actions multiple times. Such as those doing long distance events such as cycling,
swimming and running, it may also be used as a way of recovery for sprinters. A study carried out
by Kreider R.B et al. (1998) concluded that there were increases in the performance of isotonic
lifting and sprinting during agility after taking creatine supplements. Although creatine has been
believed to help recovery, research undertaken by Stroud et al. (1994), would suggest that there was
no difference in the recovery periods. This review of literature will examine as to whether creatine
should be recommended to athletes based on current research.

Universal Studios and Rise of Horror Films
Universal s origin can be traced back to 1906 when Carl Laemmle gave up his post as a

of the eight large companies who dominated the industry, though they were not one of the majors.
To be a major , a company had to be vertically integrated, owning a theater chain and having an
international distribution operation. The five majors Paramount, MGM, 20th Century Fox, Warner

still successful during the Great Depression of the 1930s. In 1931 Universal released Dracula
starring Bela Lugosi and directed by Tod Browning, which a huge success and initiated the horror
cycle. Universal also released another successful film Frankenstein (1931) starting Boris Karloff.

was the fourth of five kids being raised by their mother and father, Deloris and James Jordan.
The Jordan family moved from Brooklyn, New York to North Carolina, where the young
superstar could make a name for himself. Just as Canadian recording artist Drake expresses in
his popular new single, Michael Jordan actually started from the bottom so far at the bottom that
he got cut from the high school basketball team his sophomore year for not being tall enough.
This motivated Jordan to do great things later in his life; he was quoted in his later years saying

how to climb it, go through it, or work around it . The very next year after a long

33. The Issue Of Paper Mill Closures And A Bad Reputation For...
Paper, Pollutants, Politics, and Precaution
The paper industry here in Maine is struggling with mill closures and a bad reputation for being
wasteful or bad for the environment. The issue of paper mills being an added stress to the
environment is not unique to Maine. Mills in Wisconsin are also very wasteful, producing toxins in
the air, soil, and water. In one river in Wisconsin, two hundred fifty thousand pounds of sediment is
said to have been contaminated with manufactured organic chemicals used by the paper mills
(Environmental Impacts of the Paper Industry, 2016). The Environmental protection agency has
become involved in the issue by estimating the movement of about one hundred sixty thousand
pounds of sediment from that river to adjoining lakes, river, and bays (Environmental Impacts of
the Paper Industry, 2016). Restricting access from these locations would be pointless if a natural
disaster occurred, possibly washing the contaminated soil to populated areas (Environmental
Impacts of the Paper Industry, 2016). Not only does the paper industry s chemical waste enter the
water systems, it also enters the air. The particulate matter entering the air includes carbon dioxide,
nitrous oxides, sulfur dioxides, carbon monoxides and particulates. These contribute to ozone
warnings, acid rain, global warming and respiratory problems (Environmental Impacts of the Paper
Industry, 2016). The paper making process also consumes huge amounts of energy, drawing from

Separated from his mother at a young age, all Jimmy wants to do is to be reunited with his
mother again. Jimmy begins as a mischievous and cheeky young boy who steals food and
desperately wants to be chosen by a white family from Cranby Children s Home. Once his wish
finally comes true, Harrison s script implies that he is abused and beaten by the familyand returns to
the Home silent and mentally scarred. As Jimmy grows to become a man, he hears that his motheris
not dead and still alive out there looking for him, only to be betrayed and discover she is dead.

However, unlike Jimmy, Ruby is the first out of the five children in Stolen to be chosen by a white
family, where her life becomes a constant cycle of sexual and oppressive abuse, manipulated into
staying quiet with gifts. Throughout this, Ruby continually calls out for her mother, as she longs
for the family and love that she lost at a young age. Progressing through the story, Ruby becomes
an unpaid domestic, vulnerable to constant abuse and suffering, whether mental, physical or sexual,
and gradually loses hope and her mind, as she develops a dreadful mental illness that consumes her.
At the plays revolution, she does not recognise her own family and is noticeably broken, as
everything she once had was taken from her, including her sanity.
Ruby conveys that her personality is rather passive, as she is more fragile over the course of the
play. She does not often interact with the other children and stays quiet, due to her abuse and
manipulation keeping her from developing a true personality at such a young age. This
periodically becomes a clear result from these things, as she has forgotten what it feels like to be
loved and cared for from when she lost her mother.
Physicality:
Ruby s movement is frantic and twitchy, with impulsive turns and looks, always fearful and
anxious. When sitting or standing, she will curl up and hold herself or her doll as self protection
mechanism. She is introverted, reflecting how broken she is, even talking to herself instead of
others once she has lost everything.

The athletic programs in schools solely provide children with different ways to learn motor skills,
advance fitness, and gain knowledge about physical activity. The physical benefits acquired from
establishing a pattern of physical activity in a child s life include disease prevention, reduced
morbidity, safety, and increased intellectual health. In a standard United States physical education
program, students learn about the health benefits obtained from participating in physically active
activities, as well as the importance of continuing these practices throughout life. In elementary
school, the athletics program emphasizes the development of fundamental locomotor, non
locomotor, and artful skills through dance, gymnastics, and games. The motor skill basis
established during elementary years can increase children s social, cognitive, and physical
development, and could also increase the individual s interest in physical activities later on in life.
Subsequently, in middle school, the physical activities taught in elementary school are usually
refined, combined, and applied to sport related activities. However, the expeditious growth in
children during this time may affect the student s interests, leading the student to develop diverse

39. Social Inequality In Society
Society is created to be functional, but for whom? In America, there is a lower class, a middle
class, and an upper class. A majority of the lower class are minorities, while the upper class are
mainly white. This is no mistake, society was made to function for rich, white, owning men.
Poverty is one of the greatest assets the upper class has to keep them at their high status. Poverty
allows the upper class to stay on top, while the lower class suffers from a multitude of problems
such as poor education systems, high incarceration rates, and financial troubles that keep them
from moving up the socioeconomic ladder. America was colonized by white men and it was made
specifically for them. In the Constitution, it is declared All men are created equal. When this was
written down, it was only referring to white men. Mean while, they were upholding slavery and the
genocide of Native Americans. In their eyes, all men were not created equal. Over time, minorities
became tired of oppression and fought for their rights. The laws changed to accommodate their
requests, but it merely eased some of the tension. The foundation of America was made to benefit
one group of people; and the system continues to do so by keeping another at the bottom. (Soc 315

Visigoths asked roman emperor Valen for shelter. The Romans were happy with having them there
and they wanted them to assimilate to Roman culture. They ended up settling in an area near

41. The Dumbest Generation Essay
As the years tack on and we embark on new technological advances, the effects of such
technological advances brings on new concerns about what this technology is doing to and for us.
Is it connecting or disconnecting us, pushing the boundaries or crossing the line, helping or hurting
us? Now what s come into question is our intellectual habits; Is new technologymaking us dumber ?
With research making unfair comparisons between the new generations and older generations, those
under the age of thirty cannot be proven to be the dumbest generation , but an improving
generation. The information posed as proof that those under the age of thirty are dumb, isn t equal.
Mark Bauerlein, in his bestselling book The Dumbest Generation, defines those under thirty as
being the dumbest generation based on their lack of general knowledge and slipping reading
habits, or our intellectual habits. Bauerlein bases some of this information off of a Pew survey
on What Americans Know: 1989 2007 , where 56 percent of 18 to 29 year olds possessed low
knowledge levels, while only 22 percent of 50 to 64 year olds did (Source 1). This research
shows that the younger generation lacks knowledge of their media, money, e gadgets, and career
plans (Source 1). When looking at the information, how is this a fair comparison? The research

this. I like to travel (even though I haven t traveled much). It s interesting to see why people

45. Scene Analysis Of Goodfellas
For my scene analysis, I will be talking about the scenes in Martin Scorsese s film, Goodfellas
that take place inside the nightclub. The film portrays the true story of mobster Henry Hill
(played by Ray Liotta) who grows up in the mob and works hard to advance himself through the
ranks. He enjoys his life of money and luxury, but is oblivious to the horror that he causes.
During the film, the mobsters spend a lot of their time enjoying themselves at a nightclub they
frequent called the Copacabana . In Goodfellas, the Copacabana is a high class nightclub littered
with mafia gangsters and low key lighting with a red tint and a Hawaiian theme. The scenes were
shot by cinematographer, Michael Ballhaus. Inside the club, the lighting is primarily dark with a
tint of red which appears to be coming from the practicals seen within the shots. This is clearly to
give off a dark mafia vibe within the setting of the film. The DP wants the audience to have a
sense of slight discomfort within the nightclub and to foreshadow the dark events that take place
throughout the rest of the film. The style of lighting displays the mafia lifestyle as something that
is filled with murder, deception, and constant fear . Bright lighting is only used during happy
events during the film such as Henry and Karen s wedding and to give off positive vibes for that
moment. The scenes inside the nightclub seem to have a lighting ratio of around 8:1, so it s
accurate to say the setting appeared pretty

The complex and interesting optical properties can be shown clearly on Nanostructured metals the
collective oscillations of the conduction electrons termed plasmons lead to most striking
phenomenon encountered in these structures are resonances . Plasmon modes exist in a number of
geometries and in various metals most importantly in noble metals such as gold, copper and silver.
Under certain circumstances plasmons are excited by light, which leads to strong light scattering
and absorption and an enhancement of the local electromagnetic field. In 1989, based upon
calculations, Neeves and Birnboim proposed that a composite spherical particle with a dielectric

The interest in plasmon modes dates back to the beginning of the 20th century, but recent advances
in structuring, manipulating and observing on the nanometer scale have revitalized this field even
though these technological advances were at first driven by the increasing demand for a
semiconductor based integrated electronic components, optical applications are now receiving
increasing attention. Guiding light in an integrated optical system and interfacing with electronic
components remain important challenges for research and development today. Nanostructures
metals are believed to be one of the key ingredients of such future optoelectronic devices.

Plasma is a distinct phase of matter, separate from the traditional solids, liquids, and gases. It is a
collection of charged particles that respond strongly and collectively to electromagnetic fields,
taking the form of gas like clouds or ion beams. Since the particles in plasma are electrically

William Paley s argument for the existence of God is an important aspect of the Design argument,
which argues that the universe is being directed towards an end purpose due to the a posteriori
(subject to experience) evidence of an intelligent designer, who is God. This is because it is perhaps
arguably the most famous version, and the theory which modern day theories for the Design
argument are built upon. The first version of the Design argument came from Plato, a Greek

It has often been a long running debate between scholars over whether or not the universe has no
purpose. I personally believe it does not, for a variety of reasons. One reason is in regards to
Paley s argument, which is that it depends on having one view of the world, whereas it
realistically is more subjective. If you perceive the world as having order and happiness within
this order then there is no issue. However, if you have been greatly effected by the evil and
suffering in the world of are a pessimist, you would be more inclined to believe the world to be
flawed, or as the 18th century philosopher David Hume put forward, the idea that it was the first
flawed work of some infant deity. Also, as the 18th century philosopher Immanuel Kant put
forward, it is possible that there is no order in the world at all, and that we humans have simply
imposed order on our surroundings due to our minds categorizing it as such. Another reason I do
not believe that the universe has a purpose is due to the brutality of nature, rather than peaceful
harmony. As put forward by Herbert Spencer, a 19th century

51. The Importance Of Friendship In The School Stories
The school story is an important, recurring sub genre of children s literature, and is specifically
rooted in British culture, where boarding school are more common and provide an enclosed,
secular setting to the characters adventures, often becoming a character in its own right, and
acting as a stage for the protagonists to grow, learn, fit in or stand out, deal with and challenge
authority. The hero is rarely alone; surrounded by the opposing and balancing forces of
responsible adults and mischievous peers. From Tyke Tyler s Danny Price to Harry Potter s
Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley, friends in the school story are the centre of the protagonist
s world, providers of balance, perspective, conflict and support. For the young reader, these
friendships suggest the need for company and intimacy in order to succeed at school and in life,
and can even be seen as guidelines showing children how to fit in and strike their own
friendships. While this effect on the reader s life can be seen as positive, providing them with
positive role models and examples of kindness and sharing, literary friendships often reveal, upon
closer analysis, some darker and somewhat unhealthy dynamics. For young readers, stories act as a
window to the world, and often an example to follow. The struggles and successes their characters
go through become a way to identify, empathize and learn. The school story, with its strong
representation of friendship and early social life, can thus help their

Explored in detail, Under Armour s strategy through examination of the company s history,
mission, influences, and capabilities along with recommendations, based on a study by Arthur A.
Thompson, to achieve their long term objectives.
Review of Case Study
Under Armour History
Founded in 1996, Under Armour was the brainchild of Kevin Plank, a former University of
Maryland football player. Kevin Plank understood that today s athletes required performance
apparel beyond the ordinary cotton T shirt, a performance shirt that would allow them to remain
cool, dry, and light during long workouts and games. Kevin s plan was to develop a T shirt that
provided a tight, comfortable fit and transferred perspiration and moisture away from the athlete s
body to evaporate quickly, thus regulating the wearer s body temperature. After developing a
prototype T shirt, with the newly obtainable polyester blend, moisture wicking fabric, Mr. Plank
formed an S corporation in Maryland named KP Sports (Thompson A. A., 2014).

cases are the MGM Studios, Inc. v. Grokster case and the A M Records, Inc. v. Napster case.
Both cases differ in many ways however they also have similarities. A lot of music and other sorts
of entertainment are being distributed for free all over the internet. What some people do not
think of are the consequences that will be faced if they get caught. Not only is the distributor at
risk for getting caught but those of us that download the software illegally can be charged. Both
Grokster and Napster distributed free software that allowed computer users to share electronic files
through peer to peer networks (Oyez). In the Napster case The recording association asserts Napster
is guilty of contributory copyrightinfringement (The Guardian). According to Slate Grokster is, of
course, the sequel to Napster . Mindsets were very similar in certain aspects. Grokster and Napster
both thought they weren t breaking any laws due to Acts and finding ways to cheat the system.
Even though either one won in court, both played a major role in leaving a footprint when it comes
to violating copyright laws.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Most people in Shawn s shoes would more than likely continue to do what he was doing. At the
age of 19 he was making so much money and he did not think he was committing a crime.
...Napster claims that the online trading of MP3 music files falls within the parameters of the
1992 Audio Home Recording Act which permits copying music for personal use (The guardian).
Grokster also claimed that copyright laws were not broken. However instead of going off of the
1992 Audio Home Recording Act, Grokster did not have files passed through their computers.
Other computers were used as root super nodes that acted as music hubs for their

55. Qualities And Values That Made Jeff Skilling An Effective...
A few traits and values that made Jeff Skilling an effective leader were charisma, intelligence, and
inspiration. Although there were many more traits and values that helped Skilling to be an
effective leader, it is these three that I believe contributed the most to his effectiveness as the CEO
and leader of Enron. One of the single most important traits to possess in order to be an effective
leader is charisma. Jeff Skilling exuding charisma and was able to convince the media, shareholders,
employees, and everyone in between that he was acting in their interest and running a company
with integrity and honesty. Skilling s charisma can be seen in many instances during his career at
Enron, but one of his more striking instances of charismatic leadershipwas how he was able to
influence all of the workers at Portland General Electric to convert their 401k s into company stock
(Gibney, 2005). Though this may sound like a relatively commonplace act, it took massive amounts
of charisma to gain the trust and confidence of an entire company s employees. Another trait that
Jeff Skilling possessed in order to be an effective leader was intelligence. Skilling was a highly
intelligent man and used that intelligence to build Enron into the seventh largest corporation in the
United States until its eventual downfall. According to Biography.com, Skilling received a B.S. in
applied science from Southern Methodist University and later an M.B.A. from Harvard Business
School (Jeffrey,

56. Identity Work s Relevance For Understanding Contemporary Work
Identity Work s relevance for understanding contemporary work and organising:
Shifting towards a modern organisational identity:
In order to understand identity work, we need to understand the changing role of organisational
identity in contemporary organisation. Marx, Weber Durkheim observed a shift from
agricultural and craftwork to factory and office based work (Barley Kunda, 2001). A shift from a
more physical blue collar labour to an office based white collar took place. Whilst computers and
other technologies have eliminated different kinds of work, they have also created new ones and
have transformed a significant portion of others, for example in IT industry (Barley 1988, Adler
1992). There are new struggles in the workplace¬, such as new identity intensive issues such as
feminisation of managerial roles, the shifting meaning of professionalism and internationalisation
of business activity. The increased number of women occupying managerial and professional
positions, traditionally taken by men, has changed the former taken for granted meaning of
managerial identity (Alvesson Willmott, 2002). Taking all of these identity changes in account,
Barley and Kunda suggest that the nature of work and organisation studies are interdependent
(Barley Kunda 2001), therefore, contemporary organisational theorists are forced to adapt to the
change in the nature of work.
Defining and Conceptualising Identity Work:
Identity work is the process of forming,

57. California Earthquake Analysis
On October six a small earthquake shook part of southern California. It started along the Newport
Inglewood Fault near Long Beach, California. The quake itself was weak and not cause any
damage to the local. However the significant part about this earthquake is that it originated from ten
kilometers underground, or about 6.2 miles. Which was interesting because seismologists report on
October seventh. That Rocks at that depth should be too hot and malleable to snag and break.
Which is a key cause of earthquakes. This implies that there is some unknown process at the root of
the fault. That caused this quack to happen says study coauthor Asaf Inbal, a seismologist at
Caltech. It was also said that these earthquakes shouldn t be in direct threat
