Advantages Of African American Freedom
Freedom is the power to determine action without restraint, and it is the foundation of our lives
today. Every race has the freedom to vote, go to whichever school they choose, take place in office,
sit in any sector of the bus, etc. Around the 1860 s, Northern African Americans had freedom, but
unlike today, their freedom was restricted. In 1850, before the beginning of the civil war, the
population census concluded that fourteen percent of the population was African American. By
1860, 476,000 of them were free from slavery, but only 221,000 lived in the North. After
winning the Revolutionary war the Northern states gradually began to end slavery and it was
officially abolished in 1842. With all factors in mind, the question of just how free blacks were in
the North still lingers in the air. Blacks in the North were only somewhat free in the years just
before the civil war because they endured restrictions in social, political, and educational areas of
society.
To begin with, northern blacks were only somewhat free because they still had to encounter
segregation, discrimination, and prejudice in their social freedom. Although they were free to live,
they had to use restrooms, public areas, schools, etc. that were specifically assigned to their race. An
English Visitor, Charles Mackay, defined his travels by stating, he shall not be free to dine and
drink at our board...to attend us at the bed of sickness and pain to mingle with us in the concert
room, the lecture room, the theatre, or the church, (document B). African Americans were not
given the opportunity to associate with anyone of the white race, nor were they allowed to be in
the same location as them. Since the white race was considered the superior race , and were
heavily discriminant towards the black race, their segregated public facilities were a lot nicer than
those of african americans. Also, prejudice made it harder for black people to attain jobs. In a
graduation speech made by an african american, he proclaimed white boys won t work with me.
Shall I be a merchant? No one will have me in his office (document C). Because of their race,
african americans struggled to get employed. In society, northern blacks had to suffer through

Beck s Hybrids As A Regional Family Owned Seed
Beck s Hybrids
Beck s Hybrids is a regional family owned seed corn company that serves farmers in Indiana,
Illinois, Ohio, Southern Michigan, Western Kentucky, Iowa, Tennessee and Eastern Missouri. The
main headquarters is located in Atlanta, Indiana. Beck s has been in business for over 78 years. The
business started in 1937 with just family planting and harvesting the crops. At the time, Mr. Beck
didn t realize this launch was going to be a huge success for the second and third generations of
the Beck family. Over time, the company expanded to the owner, his wife and a few farm
employees. Beck s Hybrids has become the largest family owned seed corn business in the United
States by recruiting and selecting talented people. In 1990, there were 15 full time employees
and six of them were Beck family members. By 2006, there were 80 full time employees. Today,
there are over 500 full time employees. In the summer that number grows to over 700, that
includes interns and summer help. Beck s Hybrids has become the number one family owned
seeds corn company in the United States by hiring qualified people. Since 1990, their corn and
soybean sales have increased 20% each year. I am going to identify the critical success factors that
have made Beck s Hybrids successful.

Essay On Zero Emissions
Zero Emissions Global warming is a significant issue and the CO2 levels are up in astronomical
proportions; therefore, it does not matter what caused it at this point (Volti, 2014). Scientists can
argue weather man has had a significant influence on the temperature rise all they want; however, it
is a well understood fact that humankind has contributed to the now high levels of CO2 in the air
and humankind cannot continue to pollute the air in such high volume without regard for future
generations. Considering the incredible leap in technology the combustion engine was and the host
of benefits mankind enjoys from it is here to stay, the next leap in technology should revolutionize it
again to perform better and safer without emitting... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
With over 100 thousand trucks and other vehicles in service around the globe, it has more emission
output than many average sized cities (UPS, 2017). A complete reduction in emissions would be
equivalent to an entire city that stopped using combustion engines. The positive social impact
would make UPS the benchmark of social economic environmental consciousness that every
transportation provider would attempt to emulate. Furthermore, the entire planet would benefit
from such an ecofriendly competition, which will lead to many other health benefits and provide
lasting sustainability of our dwindling fossil fuel resources.
Remarkably, UPS has made considerable strides to improve the fuel efficiency of its trucks with
proprietary algorithms such as its package flow technology, which minimize the distance traveled to
deliver goods continues (Watson, 2017). Utilizing innovation theory to consider its environmental
sustainability, UPS also contributes to improving its bottom line. According to Ribeiro and Szabo
Cherobim (2017) There is no doubt that the environment affects dynamic and strategy of
organizations and understanding the external environment is a fundamental condition for the
organizational survival (p. 31). As UPS replaces existing trucks with fuel efficient models, it not
only caters to its ecofriendly reputation, it saves substantial revenue in fuel costs; therefore, it is

How Did Hamilton Affect The Economy
Even though he was not perfect, Hamilton did make many important economic decisions that
would later impact the future of the U.S. Beginning with he returned to New York, Hamilton
finished his studies and worked as a Pro Bono Lawyer, a lawyer who worked without pay, helping
ordinary people with everyday problems, (Fowler, Russell). Following this Hamilton attended the
Constitutional Convention hinting his support for a strong federal government, which would later
lead to the foundation of the Federalist Party, ( Alexander Hamilton. Dictionary of American
Biography). In support of a centralized government, Hamilton worked to change the Articles of
Confederation and was one of the authors of the famous Federalist Papers in which he wrote 51 of

During his time holding the position of Treasury Secretary, Hamilton decreased the nation s
debt by dividing it into two categories, domestic and foreign debt. By 1795, foreign debt was
repaid, and 40 years later domestic debt was also repaid. Furthermore, U.S currency grew to
hold strong economic value worldwide ( Alexander Hamilton Gale Encyclopedia of U.S.
Economic History). Along with repaying debt, Hamilton devised the foundation for a Bank of
New York ( The Bank of New York Company, Inc. ) and a National Bank. The bank held many
critics, including James Madison, however it was passed along with Hamilton s tax and public
credit idea in exchange for Hamilton agreeing to help vote for the capital of the United States being

his duties as Secretary of the Treasury, Hamilton helped write George Washington s Farewell

Research Paper On German Shepherd
Throughout the years, the German Shepherd dog has become well known by many. It has become
one of the most popular dogs in America due to the services that it provides for communities.
According to the American Kennel Club Dog registration statistics, the German Shepherd has
ranked in second among all other dogbreeds since 2012. I believe the domestication and breeding
of this dog played an important in role in the development of mankind. German Shepherds have not
only contributed to multiple services around the country and world, but have made loving
companions for many dog owners across the globe. Through Europe during early 1900s, dogs were
being bred to sustain characteristics that allowed reinforced their jobs of herding animals.

Pre-literacy and Modern Vestiges
Pre literacy and Modern Vestiges
For many years, the conventions and existence of epic poetry from the pre literate age were
explained as repositories for information. A well known story, usually involving a hero that
embodied the virtues of the society who told the story, engages in battles, quests, etc. As the epic is
spoken to an audience, the hero s actions and the way they are described impart the audience with
information and teachings. The information the listeners received is thought by some to be
analogous to a modern day textbook lesson, in which students learn mathematics, grammar, and
law, all by the written word. So is the contention of Homeric scholar Eric A. Havelock. As Hobart
and Schiffman state in Orality and the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The specific words sung are more attuned to the metrical nature of the music than they are apt
tools for imparting the singer with specific knowledge about a single battle. The Star Spangled
Banner is an example of modern commemoration. If we were to read it as it was originally
written, as a poem, then we would probably think of it as a series of images describing a naval
assault on an American fort, and as a singular, historical event. The poem s lines would become
information. Yet in song form this is not the case. The point of the song is not for each individual
to remember a certain night in American history; the point is for a group of singers to remember
the notion of a nation, more specifically, the United States.
Hobart and Schiffman theorize that each oral presentation of the Iliad was a different for its
audiences as the situations in which we might hear the national anthem. For instance, we sing the
national anthem at baseball games, but we also heard it after the World Trade Center was attacked
on September 11, 2001; besides being group events, these cases have little in common. The type of
memory that we use when sing the song together is the commemorative type.
Another example describing the differences in the concept of memory that Hobart and Schiffman
refer to can be found in computers. Memory on a computer describes how many tasks a computer

1. WHAT SPARKED YOUR INTEREST IN COMPUTER SCIENCE? HOW DID THIS LEAD
YOU TO MAJOR IN COMPUTER SCIENCE AND WHAT DO YOU HOPE TO ACCOMPLISH
WITH YOUR DEGREE? IN YOUR ANSWER, PLEASE DESCRIBE HOW YOUR
EXPERIENCES HAVE INFLUENCED THE GOALS YOU HAVE FOR YOURSELF.
The world of Computer Science has always been a fascinating field to me. Right from elementary
school when I was taught about the evolution of computers, from the early counting mechanisms
using the abacus to the father of computer s difference machine and down to reinventions of
various concepts, to what we have now in our modern day world as efficiently serving computers.
Also while growing up, I had an Uncle who lived with my family for a while. He was always trying
to solve Computer Science related programs. In fact, his room at the time was like a Computer
laboratory, with lots of gadgets and resources like infrared enhancing equipment, CPU systems all
dismantled into little pieces, lots of books and encyclopaedias on how to be an excellent computer
programmer, to different things I could not comprehend at the time but knew they were out of this
world.
My passion for Computer Science is not just because of its intriguing nature but also because
evidence of reinventions constantly show that anyone can make a difference or contribution no
matter how little that contribution may be, which is why I believe the field of Computer Science
to be continually evolving day after day. All of these helped to not just

America s High Prison Population
America s High Prison Population Since the 1970s, America s prison population rate has risen
700%. Despite the U.S. comprising only 5% of the world s population, it is the largest jailer
with 25% of the world s prison population with one in 99 adults in prison and one in 31 under
some type of correctional control (Mass Incarceration Problems, 2014, p. 1). According to 2013
data, 2.2 million are currently incarcerated in U.S. prisons or jails (Incarceration, 2013, para. 1), a
figure that indicates a rising problem with prisonovercrowding. While prison overcrowding
increases the economic burdens on local and state governments, common factors leading to the high
prison population is linked to the need for improved juvenile programs that deter criminal behavior
and fund for rehabilitation for reentry into mainstream society. With effective programs to deter
juvenile crimeand to aid in offender reentry coupled with sentencing reforms, overcrowding in the
nation s prisons would decline.
Among nearly 100,000 youth under age 18 released from U.S. prisons each year, the majority are
not provided with the critical assistance necessary for successful transition back to their
communities, schools, homes, and peer groups (Youth Reentry, 2012, p. 1). Instead, these youths
return to neighborhoods that tend to lack the support programs necessary to ensure a positive
transition back into mainstream society. Disturbingly, these youths frequently return to
neighborhoods with high crime

threatened him said that if he would not cooperate, his family would be in a lot trouble. Under
so much intense pressure he accepted to lie so that his family could be secure. But later on he
was proved innocent as the FBI realized that he was not the right man they wanted. In the play
The Crucible, the main emotion which led to loss of innocent lives was that of vengence. In this
play, the illicit relationship between Abigail and Proctor became the source of frustration for
Abigail, as seen when she says, She is blackening my name in the village! She is telling lies
about me! She is a cold, sniveling woman, and you bend to her! Let her turn you like a (Millar,

whoever came in it s path. In Death Penalty Disgrace, Davis was put through a lot of emotional
stress so much so that he was almost executed three times before being punished finally for
something for which he claimed he never did. In this case ,the emotion of frustration played a
big role as Davis could not get his due justice of being heard and the law makers became divided on

A Comparison between Madame Bovary and The Awakening Essay
Similarities Between Madame Bovary and The Awakening
Centuries ago, in France, Gustave Flaubert wrote Madame Bovary. In 1899, Kate Chopin wrote
The Awakening. The years cannot separate the books, and the definite similarities that the two
show. Madame Bovary is the story of a woman who is not content with her life, and searches for
ways to get away from the torture she lives everyday. The Awakening
, much like Bovary, features a
woman who is unhappy with her life, and wishes to find new adventures. The two books bear very
strong similarities to each other, and the plots are almost exactly the same, though there are some
subtle differences.

was doing then with the biting conviction that she had been denied that which her impassioned,

to find the lives they think are eluding them.
The women seem to wander through a sort of haze, looking for something. The something that they
both find happens to be a man. Emma stumbles upon her first man in a tavern. He is one of the
first things she comes upon in her new town. They have dinner together, and immediately, the two
form a bond. Unfortunately depending on the standpoint you take the relationship did not work out.
Emma was not yet brazen enough, and Leon, the young gentleman with whom she was
dumbstruck for, did not wish to advance it because she was married. This situation is matched
almost exactly when Edna meets her first fling as it were. The circumstances though, are slightly
different. Emma knows all her life that she wants a romantic sort of life. Edna does not know what
she wants, only that she is bored. Until her awakening she just trips through life with no goal.

Mythology has had extensive influence on today and many years to come because there are
many things that people research and want to know more about. Many people had to tell stories
and talk about what they heard or what they were told because they did not have computers,
printing and many other things that we have today. Many of the myths are told today that are
interesting and still today makes people want to learn more which is exactly what myths are
suppose to do, want to learn and believe in certain things. Today there are a lot of books paintings
and many other inspirational things that makes everyone want to know what happened, along with
all of us making our own myths today to pass down to future generations to come. The human

they are true or not but the whole time they are testing the myths they have fun doing so, along

expressed by nonlinguistic means . (Adler et al 431) so that you may understand that verbal
communication is just a small part of the communication process and that through nonverbal
communication you can communicate without even using words or by the way you say the words.
Let me warn you that you need to be very careful when trying to interpret nonverbal communication

While watching The Big Bang Theory, one of the channels of nonverbal communication I
noticed was facial displays. When Leonard and Penny were discussing the upcoming Comic Con
convention they were planning on attending, Leonard was showing Penny places they were
going to stay and sleep. He was smiling and you could definitely tell it was a fake smile. Penny
was also wearing a fake smile the whole time. I interpreted this as Leonard really trying to get
Penny not to go to the convention with him by showing her she would have a terrible time. I
believe Penny was using the fake smile to show Leonard that she was excited about the trip,
although she really didn t want to go. The fake smiles they were both wearing are an example of
the sub content of the facial display channel.
The second channel of nonverbal communication I noticed was gestures. This was when Leonard
was skyping his mother Beverly and she was suggesting that Leonard and Penny where having
marital problems because they were inviting Raj to come live with them. Leonard puts his hand on
his forehead and slumped over his desk. The act of placing his hand on his forehead and slumping

From our research, we identified three different perspectives on workforce diversity that people
embrace, each with different implications for a work group s ability to realize the benefits of its
cultural diversity. We use these observations here to examine critically some of the themes and
basic assumptions of previous research and to propose new directions for both researchers and
practitioners interested in diversity (Ely Thomas, 2001). When organizations have a diverse
economy, it makes the company strong. Once our nation has embrace the changes from the
demographics that reap the economic benefits of a diverse and inclusive workforce. Burns et al.

Here, we find everybody living and making rules for their own interest, participating in many evil
activities, and encouraging the rule of injustice. However, we can also find some a few people,
like Thoreau, trying to resist this race in order to stop evil practices and rules. In the essay Civil

injustices of American government. He divides the essay into three parts;... Show more content on

or a little theater in providence. Lee besides being known for sets in New York City, Lee has
designed the sets for Trinity Repertory Theater in Providence, since the 1960 s. Many of Lee s
coworkers, describe him as a dedicated, imaginative designer. Lee seemingly never repeats a set,
when you step into one of his sets you are transported to somewhere else. Richard Jenkins (a
former actor at Trinity) recalls a time when, Lee went out on the stage during an intermission
and torched away a cab because it blocked the view of the actors. Lee s reputation has given him
jobs all over. Lee has never sent out a resume and he doesn t even have a PR person, being so well
known people line up to hire him. Lee though has never let this fame go to his head, he still
works equally hard on each set. He doesn t even know how much he gets paid. Lee s wife Brooke

Imperialism in Europe
During the nineteenth century, imperialism developed and shaped the country of Europe. Europe s
global expansion begun in the fifteenth century, but the it grew rapidly suddenly in the nineteenth
century due to industrialization, creating an exceptionally powerful country. Imperialism is when a
country extends their power into another country or state for it s resources. Europe expansion
mostly took place in Africa. In 1880, Europe ruled about 10% of Africa, but in 1914 they ruled all
of Africa expect Libya. Africa had declining empires, and local wars and slavery had left the
continent weakened, making it easy for Europe to take over. Some of the causes for Imperialism
were due to economic, political and military, society, and science and invention reasons. When
Imperialism occurs, adoption and adaptation also occurs. The idea of the more powerful country is
adopted, but during the process it is also changed. This is seen in Shooting an Elephantby George
Orwell, A Meeting in the Dark by Ngugi wa thiong o, and Water, directed by Deepa Mehta.
Imperialism impacted the characters in the story, and changed their lifestyle. In Shooting an
Elephant, George Orwell had to kill an elephant that was on the loose, destroying the village and
huts. The villagers called for his help, hoping that he would stop the elephant from causing any
more destruction. However, George realized that they wanted him to kill it. He had a tough
decision to make. He didn t want to shoot the elephant

Summary Of Philip Larkin s Fiesta 1980
The way parents raise children may affect them while growing up and this will be transferred
over generations and it s most likely to never end. Being punished as a young child, life seemed
harsh and uneasy. The way parents would yell at you, tell you what to do, what not to do, and
they always seemed to have gotten in the way of doing what us children wanted to do but it
emotionally affects the personality of children while growing up for good or bad. In the poem
This Be The Verse by Philip Larkin, Larkin expresses his emotions in a strong and direct
lenguage towards his parents and the way they judge and blame him for it s mistakes. His strong
lenguage demonstrates with no doubt us that parents have a negative effect on their children and it
affects them drastically. Junot Diaz s short story Fiesta, 1980 gives an insight into the everyday
life of a lower class family, a family with a troubled young boy, Yunior and a strong, abusive father,
Papi. Bad parentchild relationships could lead to depression, low self steem and children could be
more prone to criminal behavior. Jamaica Kincaid s short story Girl illustrates gender
discrimination, receiving the instructions from her motheron how to behave and act to not be

environment instead of a more judgmental or stricter environment that sometimes comes from
tutoring from a professor.
Secondly, is the possibility of creating a new friendship from the program.

Upheaval and Renewal in Egypt and Syria
According to Cleveland, the concept of upheval and renewal can be considered a common feature

Fever 1793 Compared To Modern Times
Time Period in Fever 1793 Compared to Modern Times Fever 1793 is a historical fiction novel
written by Laurie Halse Anderson that describes how Yellow Fever affected lives of everybody
during the three months of sickness and panic in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Life today is more
straightforward than it was in 1793 because of the technology. Fever 1793 is a story about a
young girl, Matilda Mattie Cook, who faces challenges surviving in a Yellow Fever struck city
(Philadelphia). Mattie loses her grandfather on her journey of survival and her mother is
nowhere to be seen, leaving Mattie to grow up and survive her journey alone. If the story was
taking place in modern times, Mattie and the rest of Philadelphia would not struggle as much as
they did in the story. The modern day technology that is here today allows this generation to
progress through life smoother. Today s technology would have a significant, positive impact on
the community during 1793. If the people of Philadelphia had the knowledge of symptoms and

The Pros And Cons Of Prisons In Prison
Throughout mankind, the ideas of power and greed have pushed people to work harder, although
sometimes this can come at a cost. An example of greed hurting other human lives can be
commonly known as the prison complex. This idea establishes that inmate work for a fraction of
the average wage of a civilian. In fact, since America must house the inmates they build one prison
per week (Franklin). One of the reasons contributing to the construction of the prisons were the
drastically increasing amount of criminals. Many people became incarcerated in jail for minor
offenses. The Prison Industrial Complex pushed companies profits, thus then leading to the
company to push for more people becoming imprisoned for more labor.
In American prisons, inmates have the opportunity allowing them to work a job behind bars, this
helps the prisoner sustain their lives while being imprisoned. Many people believe that prisoners
are adequately paid for their work. Furthermore, the prison industrial complex is filled with
government officials, who profit from the work of the prisoners and the number of prisons (
Prison Industrial Complex ). Industries who employ inmates try to create the maximum profits by
paying prisoners a fraction of the annual wage for a civilian. Although, having a majority of a
company s products created in prisons can also result in an unsteady flow of merchandise.
Manufacturing occurs within prisons, and if a tool or merchandise from the company becomes lost

Unions And Collective Bargaining Rights
Union and collective bargaining rights are important for improvement as well as maintaining labor
conditions and employment relations and are most certainly essential in international labor. Unions
and collective bargaining rights are designed to promote and ensure our human rights are protected.
This certainly doesn t mean there aren t flaws in the system, however, the intention of unions and
collective bargaining is to safeguard workers, employers as well as the government to make it
harmonious.
Since the National Labor Relations Act was passed in 1935, unions have been in existence. The

The Importance Of Rehabilitation Needs In Oncology
Occupational therapy has the ability to potentially limit and reverse cancer related disabilities
amongst oncology patients, yet it remains extraordinarily underused within adult oncology

activities of living, coping with stress, difficulties with employment, and the need for future care by
healthcare professionals after leaving the hospital (Hwang, 2015).
It is known that physical impairments resulting from cancer and the cancer treatment are best

Therefore, it is necessary for rehabilitative services to be in place to allow for optimal occupational
performance after treatment (Movsas et. al., 2003). We suggest that although there have been
studies that recognize the effectiveness of OT interventions with oncology patients, more research
is needed to validate the importance of including OT practitioners within oncology treatment.
Implications for Occupational Therapy Practice
Occupational therapy practitioners have the knowledge and skills for producing the best quality of
life for cancer patients by focusing on their occupational performance issues. Evaluation of a client
should begin with an occupational profile that highlights their strengths and weaknesses and
managing approaches in various occupations within the context of the client s lifestyle. A holistic

Kate Chopin s An Hour
Author Kate Chopin is famous for some of the most influential feminist stories and novels in the
Western canon. The Story of an Hour is one such text. In this story, Chopin tackles many of the
concerns that are essential to feminism, including the willpower and expression of a woman s
distinctive identity separate from the identity of her husband and the right of a woman to identify
and experience her own interests. While there is an aspect of this story that is provocative, namely,
that Mrs. Mallard feels excited after learning that her husband has died, the reader can empathize
with Mrs. Mallard s feelings and support her.
Critics on Kate Chopin seem to focus their criticism on her themes and particular text than her
overall writing skills. One popular book for critics seems to be her novel The Awakening. The
book is now herald as her greatest work, yet when it was written reviewers rejected it for its
improper and vulgar subject matter (Stripe). One critic deems it not a healthy book, and another
determine that it leaves one sick of human nature. One writer even said the language to describe
the story was not fit for publication (Stripe). But today The Awakening is widely embraced, and
one critic in embracing the book said, Mrs. Kate Chopin s The Awakening, seems to me to be the
finest novel of its sort written by an American, and to rank among the world s masterpieces of short
fiction (Cantwell).

Macbeth Act 1.7 Soliloquy Essay
Macbeth s second soliloquy in Act 1.7 reveals the emotional and mental turmoil he suffers while
contemplating the act of murdering King Duncan. It is here that Shakespeare first offers his
judgement on the harsh effect rampant ambition has on even the most virtuous of characters. The
beginning of the play depicts brave Macbeth(1.2) as a valiant general and devoted subject of the
king, all words that were spoken about Macbeth characterise him as only an honourable man and
nothing less. However, is it because of his vaulting ambition (1.7) that Macbeth abandons his morals

Similarities Between Patriotism And Nationalism
The terminology patriotism and nationalism are two similar terms; both referring to the love
towards one country, however, patriotism is a subtopic under the concept of nationalism, because
nationalism is not solely the love of a country or the hate of all other country, suggesting there are
different forms of nationalism. Patriotism and nationalism are often mistaken as synonyms.
Patriotism is the unconditional love towards a country. It is individual connection between an
individual and a country. It could be caused by many factors of nationalism. Nationalism is the
connection individuals felt between one another regarding one or more notion of the many aspects
of nationalism geographical, social, cultural, political, religious, and economically related.
Connections link directly to collective identity, and it can be formed by religious beliefs, for
instance, Indonesia is a Muslim country, and majority of Indonesians are Muslims, this connects
people in Indonesia religiously to one another, in other words, citizens forms a collective cultural

Christmas Eve
Christmas is magical in the eyes of a child. At least, that s how it was for me. Every year, as the
month of December rolled around, the lights were strung and the trees were set up, I sent my
letter out with a hopeful heart that Santa would make an appearance on my doorstep on
Christmas Eve. The December of 2008 was the year that I wished for an electric scooter. I
mailed my wish list to Santa, knowing he would prevail and deliver that Razor electric scooter
with a hand brake and fat tires. Christmas morning was perfect! Santa had brought me a plum
colored, shiny, and fully charged electric scooter and my younger sister, Olivia, a hot pink one.
They were perched on their small silver kickstands in front of our eight foot tree that was
weighed down with years worth of homemade and souvenir ornaments. The scooters were free of
a box or wrapping, just how Santa always brought the gifts. As soon as the all of the presents
were ripped open and breakfast eaten, I pranced outside to test out my new ride. It was a crisp,
wintry morning with gray skies. I cruised back and forth on the scooter in front of my house for
hours, accelerating on the uphills and coasting on the downhills with the cold wind blowing
through my tangled hair and my nose turning pink from the low temperatures. It was my absolute

Irish Potato Famine Essay
In the early 1800s life in Ireland wasn t easy, Irish citizens got by day to day by farming and

The Irish Potato Famine was the worst tragedy in the history of Ireland. The outcome of the famine
would result in hundreds of thousands dead, an failure of the economy in Ireland, and millions of

Eventually the federal government imported Indian corn from America to be distributed to the

difficult to digest, and it was not very filling, leaving many Irish hungry. It eventually became

In 1846 due to no effort to rid the infected potatoes of the previous year the new season provided

Comparing Beowulf And Dante s Inferno
A hero from classical Greek mythology and ancient Greek history can be defined as A man (or
occas. a woman) of superhuman strength, courage, or ability, favored by the gods; especially
regarded as semi divine and immortal, and a Christian is defined as Believing, professing, or
belonging to the religion of Christ. To be a Christian hero, one must derive from both these
characteristics and live life through them. Beowulf and Dante from there different stories
comparably does this. They both can be looked as great heroes in each story, but one shows there
God given faith and abilities more. Through being a hero through Christ, undying faithfulness
towards the lord, and being regarded as immortal through god s protection, Beowulf is the better
example of a Christian hero.
A major attribute of a Christian hero is being a hero through Christ. Beowulf never lets his
glorious triumphs go unannounced without attributing his blessing to god. He sees god as the
reason he is great and never misses a chance to profess it. Even after Beowulf defeated Grendel in

The Fifteenth Amendment And Women s Suffrage Movement
Introduction The Women s Suffrage Movement was a political struggle, in which women
protested and assembled to vote and run for office. The idea that women could not vote, run for
office, be represented in the workplace, nor serve on juries contradicted early ideas that the
American woman was a protector of the concepts of freedom and righteousness. The American
suffrage movement originated from the Seneca Falls Convention of 1848 (history.com). At this
convention, women alongside a few men worked to write the Declaration of Sentiments, which
would start the initial idea to fight for the rights of women and provide a list of grievances in
reference to the rights of women such as: voting rights, property rights, and educational rights
(Snider 2016). However, women would not receive suffrage until the post Civil War era. Several
leaders as well as movements would have to amalgamate over the course of several decades for
the voice of women to be heard and changes to be made in accordance to law and society. The
Fifteenth Amendment and Women s Rights The concept of women s suffrage was first questioned
under the clauses of the Fifteenth Amendment. Under this amelioration, the denial of suffrage by
the states to any citizen on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude was
prohibited. However, radical Republicans did not want to handle the plank of women s suffrage as
it was feared that the goal of black enfranchisement would be delayed, as the amendment

The Pros And Cons Of Firefighter Grieving
On average there are there are 70 on duty firefighter fatalities in the United States every year. (
Firefighter Fatalities in the United States ). This means that an on duty firefighter dies about
every 5 days. Firefighters have enough stress with their everyday job, then you add losing a
fellow member it puts another level to that stress. Imagine two siblings go out to play basketball
like they do multiple times everyday and one of them end up dying in a freak accident. Horrible
right? It is the same thing with firefighters. They go out on a call. There is a freak accident and
there is not a great outcome. The death of a fellow firefighter is like losing a brother or sister
because you are living with them for almost one third of your life. (Johnson). Firefighters are one
big family. There has always been firefighter fatalities. The questions has always been: How to deal
with one when it happens. What is the right amount of time off for grieving? Should there be
mandatory counseling? Who do we bring in to support the firefighters? The problem is that every
fatal incident... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Grieving is a large part of the healing process. When there is any death anyone who is close with
the person grieves. The closer someone is to the person the longer it may take for them to finish the
grieving process. Giving firefighters mandatory time off for grieving is another way to deal with
firefighter fatalities. Failure to provide emotional and psychological support may result in the
resurgence of emotions during stressful situations, which may have a detrimental impact on safe
operations. (Theil, 19). Providing time for grieving is important. The problem is that the fire
department has to run and it cannot run without the firefighters. Giving mandatory grieving works
in theory but in reality there would not be anyone to run the fire

Issues Among Today s Latent Fingerprint Detection Techniques
Issues Among Today s Latent Fingerprint Detection Techniques
Zachary Fisher
Even with the advanced state of forensic sciences some surfaces and circumstances prove difficult
to successfully lift, or even detect, fingerprints from. There are now several methods of enhancing
latent fingerprints for collection. These methods use chemicals, light sources and other techniques
to enhance latent ridge marks on materials that prove difficult to successfully identify and lift prints
from. These surfaces include certain types of metals, porous surfaces, and certain kinds of paper.
We will discuss three types of latent finger print enhancement that are relatively new or still in the
beginning stages of testing, two chemical, elctrochromism and yellow ... Show more content on

Lastly, reliable print lifting and identifying are necessary because fingerprints are often the only
way to tie a perpetrator to the crime itself.
Electrochromism is a relatively newly discovered method that allows for the capturing of a
negative image of a fingerprint on a metal surface. The material poly(3,4 ethylenedioxythiophene)
is applied to the area that is being searched, once applied a charge is applied to the material that
causes a shift in color that allows for the print to be identified with great detail. (Brodie)
Curcumin, yellow 3, can be used to develop latent prints that are otherwise difficult to lift useful
prints from using other traditional methods, particularly metal and hard plastics. Currently basic
violet 3 and solvent black 3 are used but pose issues as solvent black 3 is a carcinogen and must
be used in laboratory conditions and basic violet can be difficult to see on many surfaces. Yellow
3 naturally occurs in the popular Indian spice turmeric and is commonly used as a natural food
coloring. When used as a reagent in fingerprint collection it targets the non water soluble material
with the fingerprint residue, and can be used on dark surfaces in place of solvent black 3 due to its
naturally bright color. Due to the fact that it targets the non water soluble material it can even be
used to retrieve prints

Victim Blaming Sociology
The phenomenon of victim blaming is a multifaceted topic with far reaching consequences. The
tendency to blame innocent victims stems from a need to cope with threats to our concept of
reality. People generally prefer to consider the world to be just a concept that indicates that people
get what they deserve. This just world view is very integral to the worldview of most people, so
when it is threatened, individuals employ defensive strategies to reestablish a sense of justice in the
world (Hafer, 2000). Blaming the victimin some capacity for misfortunes that befall them is a
convenient way to reestablish a just world view. Such misattribution of blame institutes the
possibility that victims of crimes or disease will be mistreated and... Show more content on

It is more likely that a person will engage in victim blaming when the victim in question is an in
group member in some capacity. When a person whom is perceived as belonging to one s in
group is victimized, one s perception of the just world is more likely to be threatened (Correia
Vala, 2003). This is because observers wish to believe themselves as invincible to the same types of
misfortune as those who are victimized, and the more similarities between the observer and the
victim, the more the observer may question this perception of invincibility (Goldenberg Forgas,
2012).
Mood Induction When an individual engages in victim blaming practices, they are attempting to
alleviate psychological discomfort. It is reasonable to suggest, then, that pre existing states of
mood may influence the likelihood of blaming the victim. Mood as resource theory indicates that
a positive mood acts as a resource, which individuals may draw upon when presented with
situations that threaten their world view (Raghunathan Trope, 2002). Because of this, a person in
a positive mood is less likely to engage in victim blaming, while a person in a negative mood is
more likely to engage in victim blaming.

Tolkien s Gender Roles
Many of J.R.R. Tolkien s major works, such as The Silmarillion and The Lord of the Rings have
been criticized for their absence of major female characters, in addition to the stereotypical nature
of those females. This essay discusses that these assumptions are erroneous, the female characters in
Tolkien s works are independent, resilient, and imperative to the central plots of each novel. J.R.R.
Tolkien s characters LГєthien, Galadriel, Arwen, and Г‰owyn are good examples of strong
females. Tolkien heavily influenced his characters with old Germanic and Norse mythology, and

Some people may believe that power comes from physical strength, or the skill of controlling
others. Throughout The Silmarillion and The Lord of the Rings, strength comes from conquering
evil and not force. Spirituality and sacrifice are just a few of the examples of the inner strength
that helps Middle earth to strive and to prosper. Arwen, Г‰owyn, Galadriel, and LГєthien are
models of how personal sacrifice for the benefits of others is vital to the redemption of Middle
earth. In the book, Galadriel is one of the characters who generously offers the Ring to Frodo.
This shows that the power of Galadriel is righteous and her ability to resist the power of the Ring
is astounding. Many men have been weak when in presence of the Ring, such as Boromir and
Denethor. This power is not only accomplished by Arwen, Г‰owyn, Galadriel, and LГєthien, but
also by Frodo, Sam, Gandalf and Faramir hand over the power of the Ring for the greater good of
Middle earth. Their humbleness and sacrifice is what makes these women strong and powerful.
Galadriel s hardship with power is moreover repeated in her mental brawl with Sauron, which she

  • 2. Advantages Of African American Freedom Freedom is the power to determine action without restraint, and it is the foundation of our lives today. Every race has the freedom to vote, go to whichever school they choose, take place in office, sit in any sector of the bus, etc. Around the 1860 s, Northern African Americans had freedom, but unlike today, their freedom was restricted. In 1850, before the beginning of the civil war, the population census concluded that fourteen percent of the population was African American. By 1860, 476,000 of them were free from slavery, but only 221,000 lived in the North. After winning the Revolutionary war the Northern states gradually began to end slavery and it was officially abolished in 1842. With all factors in mind, the question of just how free blacks were in the North still lingers in the air. Blacks in the North were only somewhat free in the years just before the civil war because they endured restrictions in social, political, and educational areas of society. To begin with, northern blacks were only somewhat free because they still had to encounter segregation, discrimination, and prejudice in their social freedom. Although they were free to live, they had to use restrooms, public areas, schools, etc. that were specifically assigned to their race. An English Visitor, Charles Mackay, defined his travels by stating, he shall not be free to dine and drink at our board...to attend us at the bed of sickness and pain to mingle with us in the concert room, the lecture room, the theatre, or the church, (document B). African Americans were not given the opportunity to associate with anyone of the white race, nor were they allowed to be in the same location as them. Since the white race was considered the superior race , and were heavily discriminant towards the black race, their segregated public facilities were a lot nicer than those of african americans. Also, prejudice made it harder for black people to attain jobs. In a graduation speech made by an african american, he proclaimed white boys won t work with me. Shall I be a merchant? No one will have me in his office (document C). Because of their race, african americans struggled to get employed. In society, northern blacks had to suffer through ... Essay On Zero Emissions Zero Emissions Global warming is a significant issue and the CO2 levels are up in astronomical proportions; therefore, it does not matter what caused it at this point (Volti, 2014). Scientists can argue weather man has had a significant influence on the temperature rise all they want; however, it is a well understood fact that humankind has contributed to the now high levels of CO2 in the air and humankind cannot continue to pollute the air in such high volume without regard for future generations. Considering the incredible leap in technology the combustion engine was and the host of benefits mankind enjoys from it is here to stay, the next leap in technology should revolutionize it again to perform better and safer without emitting... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... With over 100 thousand trucks and other vehicles in service around the globe, it has more emission output than many average sized cities (UPS, 2017). A complete reduction in emissions would be equivalent to an entire city that stopped using combustion engines. The positive social impact would make UPS the benchmark of social economic environmental consciousness that every transportation provider would attempt to emulate. Furthermore, the entire planet would benefit from such an ecofriendly competition, which will lead to many other health benefits and provide lasting sustainability of our dwindling fossil fuel resources. Remarkably, UPS has made considerable strides to improve the fuel efficiency of its trucks with proprietary algorithms such as its package flow technology, which minimize the distance traveled to deliver goods continues (Watson, 2017). Utilizing innovation theory to consider its environmental sustainability, UPS also contributes to improving its bottom line. According to Ribeiro and Szabo Cherobim (2017) There is no doubt that the environment affects dynamic and strategy of organizations and understanding the external environment is a fundamental condition for the organizational survival (p. 31). As UPS replaces existing trucks with fuel efficient models, it not only caters to its ecofriendly reputation, it saves substantial revenue in fuel costs; therefore, it is ... Following this Hamilton attended the Constitutional Convention hinting his support for a strong federal government, which would later lead to the foundation of the Federalist Party, ( Alexander Hamilton. • 8. Pre-literacy and Modern Vestiges Pre literacy and Modern Vestiges For many years, the conventions and existence of epic poetry from the pre literate age were explained as repositories for information. A well known story, usually involving a hero that embodied the virtues of the society who told the story, engages in battles, quests, etc. As the epic is spoken to an audience, the hero s actions and the way they are described impart the audience with information and teachings. The information the listeners received is thought by some to be analogous to a modern day textbook lesson, in which students learn mathematics, grammar, and law, all by the written word. So is the contention of Homeric scholar Eric A. Havelock. As Hobart and Schiffman state in Orality and the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The specific words sung are more attuned to the metrical nature of the music than they are apt tools for imparting the singer with specific knowledge about a single battle. The Star Spangled Banner is an example of modern commemoration. If we were to read it as it was originally written, as a poem, then we would probably think of it as a series of images describing a naval assault on an American fort, and as a singular, historical event. The poem s lines would become information. Yet in song form this is not the case. The point of the song is not for each individual to remember a certain night in American history; the point is for a group of singers to remember the notion of a nation, more specifically, the United States. Hobart and Schiffman theorize that each oral presentation of the Iliad was a different for its audiences as the situations in which we might hear the national anthem. For instance, we sing the national anthem at baseball games, but we also heard it after the World Trade Center was attacked on September 11, 2001; besides being group events, these cases have little in common. The type of memory that we use when sing the song together is the commemorative type. Another example describing the differences in the concept of memory that Hobart and Schiffman refer to can be found in computers. HOW DID THIS LEAD YOU TO MAJOR IN COMPUTER SCIENCE AND WHAT DO YOU HOPE TO ACCOMPLISH WITH YOUR DEGREE? IN YOUR ANSWER, PLEASE DESCRIBE HOW YOUR EXPERIENCES HAVE INFLUENCED THE GOALS YOU HAVE FOR YOURSELF. The world of Computer Science has always been a fascinating field to me. Right from elementary school when I was taught about the evolution of computers, from the early counting mechanisms using the abacus to the father of computer s difference machine and down to reinventions of various concepts, to what we have now in our modern day world as efficiently serving computers. Also while growing up, I had an Uncle who lived with my family for a while. He was always trying to solve Computer Science related programs. In fact, his room at the time was like a Computer laboratory, with lots of gadgets and resources like infrared enhancing equipment, CPU systems all dismantled into little pieces, lots of books and encyclopaedias on how to be an excellent computer programmer, to different things I could not comprehend at the time but knew they were out of this world. My passion for Computer Science is not just because of its intriguing nature but also because evidence of reinventions constantly show that anyone can make a difference or contribution no matter how little that contribution may be, which is why I believe the field of Computer Science to be continually evolving day after day. Despite the U.S. comprising only 5% of the world s population, it is the largest jailer with 25% of the world s prison population with one in 99 adults in prison and one in 31 under some type of correctional control (Mass Incarceration Problems, 2014, p. 1). According to 2013 data, 2.2 million are currently incarcerated in U.S. prisons or jails (Incarceration, 2013, para. 1), a figure that indicates a rising problem with prisonovercrowding. While prison overcrowding increases the economic burdens on local and state governments, common factors leading to the high prison population is linked to the need for improved juvenile programs that deter criminal behavior and fund for rehabilitation for reentry into mainstream society. With effective programs to deter juvenile crimeand to aid in offender reentry coupled with sentencing reforms, overcrowding in the nation s prisons would decline. Among nearly 100,000 youth under age 18 released from U.S. prisons each year, the majority are not provided with the critical assistance necessary for successful transition back to their communities, schools, homes, and peer groups (Youth Reentry, 2012, p. 1). Under so much intense pressure he accepted to lie so that his family could be secure. But later on he was proved innocent as the FBI realized that he was not the right man they wanted. In the play The Crucible, the main emotion which led to loss of innocent lives was that of vengence. (Adler et al 431) so that you may understand that verbal communication is just a small part of the communication process and that through nonverbal communication you can communicate without even using words or by the way you say the words. Let me warn you that you need to be very careful when trying to interpret nonverbal communication , because nonverbal communicationcan be ambiguous. He was smiling and you could definitely tell it was a fake smile. Penny was also wearing a fake smile the whole time. I interpreted this as Leonard really trying to get Penny not to go to the convention with him by showing her she would have a terrible time. I believe Penny was using the fake smile to show Leonard that she was excited about the trip, although she really didn t want to go. The fake smiles they were both wearing are an example of the sub content of the facial display channel. The second channel of nonverbal communication I noticed was gestures. This was when Leonard was skyping his mother Beverly and she was suggesting that Leonard and Penny where having marital problems because they were inviting Raj to come live with them. In general, Asian immigrant and refugee families often face difficulties that relate to their migration experience and the ongoing adjustment to the American lifestyle and culture. Often times, children in immigration and refugee families learn the language and acculturate faster than their parents, and their adoption of American values and behaviors may conflict with those of their parents (Xia, Do, Xie, 2013). • 35. Christmas Eve Christmas is magical in the eyes of a child. At least, that s how it was for me. Every year, as the month of December rolled around, the lights were strung and the trees were set up, I sent my letter out with a hopeful heart that Santa would make an appearance on my doorstep on Christmas Eve. The December of 2008 was the year that I wished for an electric scooter. I mailed my wish list to Santa, knowing he would prevail and deliver that Razor electric scooter with a hand brake and fat tires. Christmas morning was perfect! Santa had brought me a plum colored, shiny, and fully charged electric scooter and my younger sister, Olivia, a hot pink one. They were perched on their small silver kickstands in front of our eight foot tree that was weighed down with years worth of homemade and souvenir ornaments. The scooters were free of a box or wrapping, just how Santa always brought the gifts. As soon as the all of the presents were ripped open and breakfast eaten, I pranced outside to test out my new ride. It was a crisp, wintry morning with gray skies. I cruised back and forth on the scooter in front of my house for hours, accelerating on the uphills and coasting on the downhills with the cold wind blowing through my tangled hair and my nose turning pink from the low temperatures. It was my absolute favorite present. Fast forward a few days, the Saturday following Christmas, and I was hiking up the red clay hill that began to incline as soon as you stepped off of our back ... It eventually became accepted and the Irish learned to deal with it. In 1846 due to no effort to rid the infected potatoes of the previous year the new season provided enough food to feed the country for only one month. This caused people to eat what ever they could get their hands on. People ate dogs, horses, birds, mushrooms, roots, flowers, and anything that was believed to have a nutritional value. Fish was a food that involved a risk to obtain due to the rough Irish seas and rocky coast. Shellfish and seaweed were eaten but after many people died from eating poisonous varieties of both. • 37. Comparing Beowulf And Dante s Inferno A hero from classical Greek mythology and ancient Greek history can be defined as A man (or occas. a woman) of superhuman strength, courage, or ability, favored by the gods; especially regarded as semi divine and immortal, and a Christian is defined as Believing, professing, or belonging to the religion of Christ. To be a Christian hero, one must derive from both these characteristics and live life through them. Beowulf and Dante from there different stories comparably does this. They both can be looked as great heroes in each story, but one shows there God given faith and abilities more. Through being a hero through Christ, undying faithfulness towards the lord, and being regarded as immortal through god s protection, Beowulf is the better example of a Christian hero. A major attribute of a Christian hero is being a hero through Christ. Beowulf never lets his glorious triumphs go unannounced without attributing his blessing to god. • 39. The Fifteenth Amendment And Women s Suffrage Movement Introduction The Women s Suffrage Movement was a political struggle, in which women protested and assembled to vote and run for office. The idea that women could not vote, run for office, be represented in the workplace, nor serve on juries contradicted early ideas that the American woman was a protector of the concepts of freedom and righteousness. The American suffrage movement originated from the Seneca Falls Convention of 1848 (history.com). At this convention, women alongside a few men worked to write the Declaration of Sentiments, which would start the initial idea to fight for the rights of women and provide a list of grievances in reference to the rights of women such as: voting rights, property rights, and educational rights (Snider 2016). However, women would not receive suffrage until the post Civil War era. Several leaders as well as movements would have to amalgamate over the course of several decades for the voice of women to be heard and changes to be made in accordance to law and society. The Fifteenth Amendment and Women s Rights The concept of women s suffrage was first questioned under the clauses of the Fifteenth Amendment. Under this amelioration, the denial of suffrage by the states to any citizen on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude was prohibited. However, radical Republicans did not want to handle the plank of women s suffrage as it was feared that the goal of black enfranchisement would be delayed, as the amendment ... Electrochromism is a relatively newly discovered method that allows for the capturing of a negative image of a fingerprint on a metal surface. The material poly(3,4 ethylenedioxythiophene) is applied to the area that is being searched, once applied a charge is applied to the material that causes a shift in color that allows for the print to be identified with great detail. (Brodie) Curcumin, yellow 3, can be used to develop latent prints that are otherwise difficult to lift useful prints from using other traditional methods, particularly metal and hard plastics. Currently basic violet 3 and solvent black 3 are used but pose issues as solvent black 3 is a carcinogen and must be used in laboratory conditions and basic violet can be difficult to see on many surfaces. Yellow 3 naturally occurs in the popular Indian spice turmeric and is commonly used as a natural food coloring. When used as a reagent in fingerprint collection it targets the non water soluble material with the fingerprint residue, and can be used on dark surfaces in place of solvent black 3 due to its naturally bright color. • 43. Victim Blaming Sociology The phenomenon of victim blaming is a multifaceted topic with far reaching consequences. The tendency to blame innocent victims stems from a need to cope with threats to our concept of reality. People generally prefer to consider the world to be just a concept that indicates that people get what they deserve. This just world view is very integral to the worldview of most people, so when it is threatened, individuals employ defensive strategies to reestablish a sense of justice in the world (Hafer, 2000). Blaming the victimin some capacity for misfortunes that befall them is a convenient way to reestablish a just world view. Such misattribution of blame institutes the possibility that victims of crimes or disease will be mistreated and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is more likely that a person will engage in victim blaming when the victim in question is an in group member in some capacity. When a person whom is perceived as belonging to one s in group is victimized, one s perception of the just world is more likely to be threatened (Correia Vala, 2003). This is because observers wish to believe themselves as invincible to the same types of misfortune as those who are victimized, and the more similarities between the observer and the victim, the more the observer may question this perception of invincibility (Goldenberg Forgas, 2012). Mood Induction When an individual engages in victim blaming practices, they are attempting to alleviate psychological discomfort. It is reasonable to suggest, then, that pre existing states of mood may influence the likelihood of blaming the victim. Mood as resource theory indicates that a positive mood acts as a resource, which individuals may draw upon when presented with situations that threaten their world view (Raghunathan Trope, 2002). Because of this, a person in a positive mood is less likely to engage in victim blaming, while a person in a negative mood is more likely to engage in victim blaming. Specific Aims/Research ...
