Do you have an idea you'd like to make real? Are you a person with a mission? At the Melton Foundation's 2013 Global Citizenship Conference "Springboard Sessions", Jyotsna Pattabiraman - a serial entrepreneur - describes her experience with "starting up" businesses, prototyping and using design thinking and strategic communication to transform a lightbulb into a start up.
This document proposes several innovative ideas for new types of alarm clocks. The most practical idea is an alarm clock that wakes users up by telling them their to-do list for the day, read aloud by a digital or recorded voice. This not only wakes users but also helps them remember their plans. The most disruptive idea is an alarm cloth for children with a microphone, allowing parents to record bedtime stories or messages. The author's favorite idea is a novelty alarm clock shaped like an animal that squirts water when the alarm goes off, engaging users' senses beyond just sound to wake them.
1) Participants' scores on the Duolingo English test correlated substantially with their TOEFL total scores, and moderately with TOEFL section scores, providing evidence of the Duolingo test's validity.
2) Participants' scores on the first Duolingo English test correlated highly with their scores on a second test two weeks later, indicating the Duolingo test's scores are reliable.
3) Duolingo English test scores were linked to TOEFL total scores to find comparable scores; a Duolingo score of 5.0 corresponded to the minimum TOEFL cut-off of 80, and a score of 7.2 corresponded to the more selective TOEFL cut-off
This document describes two prototypes for an alarm clock that helps wake the user up. The first prototype was a flying alarm clock with a propeller that would fly around the room making noise until returned to the clock. It successfully woke the user. The second prototype was a weightlifting alarm clock that required the user to lift it 30 times to disable the alarm. It worked to wake the user but needed improvements to be more comfortable and decorative. Both prototypes were tested by Eric and feedback was collected on what worked and improvements needed.

What is Community Economic Develompent? Presentation prepared by the Canadia...Michael Toye
The Canadian CED Network is a national, member-driven organization that promotes community economic development (CED) as an alternative model to address social, economic, and environmental challenges. It has several thousand member organizations across sectors and provides capacity building, research, policy development, and networking support to members. CED involves local communities creating economic opportunities and enhancing social and environmental conditions, particularly for marginalized groups, through a sustainable and inclusive approach.
Community Economic Development and the Social Economy: Alternatives for a New...Michael Toye
An introduction to community economic development and the social economy in Canada, presented at the People's Social Forum, in Ottawa, Aug 21, 2014. For more information, visit http://ccednet-rcdec.ca

The document describes different learning style preferences on four scales:
1) Active vs reflective learners - active learners learn better by doing something active with information while reflective learners prefer to think about it quietly first.
2) Sensing vs intuitive learners - sensing learners prefer learning facts while intuitive learners prefer discovering possibilities and relationships.
3) Visual vs verbal learners - visual learners remember best what they see while verbal learners get more from words.
4) Sequential vs global learners - sequential learners gain understanding in linear steps while global learners learn in large jumps and suddenly "get it."
It provides tips for how learners of different preferences on each scale can help themselves study more

Presentation:
"Mathematics and Computer Sciences in Niger: Role, Difficulties and Prospects"
Abstract:
"Mathematics and Computer Science are of paramount importance in both teaching and scientific research, and the expectations of their applications and implications in other areas of everyday social, political and economic life, are very huge. However, just as in a lot of developing countries, in Niger these disciplines encounter enormous difficulties that are first of pedagogical order due to the lack of well qualified teachers in sufficient numbers, then of adversely order by society for the complexity in learning and especially for the professional market deemed in most
cases demotivating.
In this talk, we present the status of the art of these key disciplines, their role and problems that impede their development in Niger. We also talk about the ways and means undertaken in recent years to overcome the various impediment and thus promote these disciplines to properly contribute to social economic development of the country and even worldwide level."

“The Role of Mathematics and Computer Science in Developing Countries“
Presentation:
"Viewpoint from Bangladesh"
Abstract:
"This presentation reiterates the stand of the academicians in the World Class University Conferences held at Shanghai that success of developing countries in facing challenge and competition of the 21st century will largely depend upon their ability to create world class universities. Now that horizon of every branch of science has been increasing, newer and newer branches are being added to the knowledge, the world needs many more knowledge workers than ever before. There has been an unfortunate trend of good science students continuing education in other branches implying that there will be lesser knowledge workers to push the boundaries of science and technology. This will necessitate popularizing STEM subjects among young students. Many developing countries are yet to appreciate importance of investing the prescribed 6% of GDP in education or 20% of budget allocation. For over populated countries like Bangladesh this may not be possible to increase allocation immediately. However, our initiative of Mathematics, Informatics, Physics, Chemistry and science Olympiads throughout the country, massive participation of students and guardians alike and winning medals from international events by our students do indicate that introduction of healthy Olympiad competitions may encourage young students to continue with science subjects and earn excellence. Academicians should also find ways and means of popularizing science not only among science students and faculty members but also among people of other walks of life through introduction of cost effective events like Olympiads. In fact we are looking for days when IMO, IOI, IPhO, IChO champions will be considered as superstars in a scale of Wimbledon champions or golden boot winners at least by science students and faculty members. Since developing countries are short of resources and infrastructures they must initiate innovative events to mobilize infinite energy and spirit of young people towards learning science and technology, and divert them from trivial pursuits. Ever increasing power of computers has created opportunity for tackling mathematical problems that are yet to be resolved. Revolutionary progress of computer science has created a great opportunity for developing countries to change their fate by harvesting benefits of this versatile technology that can ensure optimal utilization of their scarce resources and minimize wastage."

The document contains a 25 question quiz about King Arthur and his knights. The questions cover details about Arthur's childhood and training, how he pulled the sword from the stone, his rise to becoming king of England, and key events and figures from the early days of his reign such as the introduction of the Lady of the Lake and the code of chivalry. The quiz tests knowledge of the people, places, and events that shaped Arthur's path from a young boy to becoming the fabled leader of the Knights of the Round Table.
Reframing the Middle East: From conflict to conciliationMFGlobalCitizen
Can we find a pathway to peace in the Middle East? And could that unlikely unifier be the environment? At the Melton Foundation's 2013 Global Citizenship Conference, David Lehrer invites us to join him in exploring how the Arava Institute of Environmental Studies brings together Israeli, Palestinian, Jordanian and other students together to build trust and reframe the Middle East from conflict to conciliation.
Wind power plants harness the power of wind to generate electricity. They work by using wind turbine blades to capture the kinetic energy of the wind and convert it into rotational energy to spin a shaft. This shaft spins a generator to produce electricity. India has over 19,000 MW of installed wind power capacity as of 2013, the fifth largest in the world. The state of Tamil Nadu generates the most wind power in India. Wind power is a renewable and clean energy source but suffers from intermittent availability due to fluctuating wind speeds.
