Security is a central concern in the study of international relations (IR). Yet despite being the focus
of considerable scrutiny, few agreed conceptions of security exist (Buzan, 1991; Huysmans, 2006;
Terriff et al., 1991; McSweeney, 1999; Morgan, 1992). Buzan even goes as far to posit that the
very conception of security is essentially contested and thus poses an unsolvable debate (Buzan,
People, states and fear; Little, ideology and change, p35). These disagreements have created rifts in
the security community over what can be threatened and indeed what can even be considered a
threat. Part of the complexity to the subject is derived from the numerous opposing and often
contradicting theoretical perspectives within international relations itself, of which security is a sub
field (Terrif et al. 1991 Security studies today). This paper thereby seeks the trace the various
theoretical strands of security studies with the hope of elucidating how and why Muslims have
been increasingly portrayed as a threat and Otherised in Britain.

artists to spread propaganda to publish a false version of the war. In response to that, artists
worldwide fought the censorship by creating their personal representations of the war. This was the
true battle during World War One not the exploding shots traded from each side or bombs
cascading down from the sky but the stand taken by each and every artist against the glorification...
They refused to sit idly by as censorship and false ideal took over the public, in response they
created new forms of art to fully display the brutality of war. These new styles, blossomed into
Futurism, Cubism, and more, and was crucial in the stand artists took against the censorship of
the time. CRW Nevinson and other artists depicted soldiers at their most vulnerable and real
moments, Nevinson especially emphasizing the overwhelming, completely alien, and utterly
un heroic aspects of the war in his painting of soldiers resting (Appendix B). Here he shows the
men as they are: human and often un heroic, not fighting for any cause or fearlessly defeating
the enemy. Nevinson even makes the men appear as a war machine with little power of their
own. Ironically, many artists were forced to take part in this very machine when they were
commissioned to paint pieces to support the system. William Orpen was hired to paint a piece
honoring the victory of the Allied powers, yet as he became aware of the political deceit he

It is becoming increasingly common nowadays in China that students go to cram
schools frequently instead of attending the official school every time when some important
examinations are coming. This phenomenon happens a lot around me. Many good
friends of mine, no matter whether they are good at studying or not, will chose to go to cram
schools for
further study. Their goals are to triumph over challenges and difficulties in study and make
higher marks. However, to my surprise, having spent a lot of time and money, they made
lower marks sometimes. They study very hard every time in cram schools, nevertheless,
