Vai es conocido principalmente por sus composiciones, actuaciones y producciones de música instrumental de guitarra, pero además ha participado en grabaciones de otros muchos artistas del rock. Es considerado uno de los principales guitarristas eléctricos, y un revolucionario dentro del rock instrumental. Es para muchos, el mejor virtuoso del mástil.
