How does a Debate Work?

The Classic Debating Format
▪ Simple Structure (Adopted from the British Parliament)
▪ 2 Teams (2 Members upwards) – A Proposition and An
Opposition
▪ Each Speaker presents their case/ Counters the Other
▪ The Leader Sums up at last

Role of Debaters (4 Man team)
▪ 1st Speaker/ Leader (Presents and Sums Up)
▪ 2nd Speaker – Strengthens the Position (80%) + Counters
(20%)
▪ 3rd Speaker – Strengthens (50%) + Counters (50%)
▪ 4th Speaker – Counters (100%)

Preparing for a Debate
▪ Understand the Topic by Defining each key word and
exploring all possibilities well.
▪ Establish Reasons for your Argumentation
▪ Back the Reasons with Proof/ Logic/ Evidences
▪ Predict the Opponents Arguments as much as possible
and practise countering them.

Caution!
Things to watch out for when you
become a Debater?

Watch out for these!
▪ Do not be afraid of making mistakes. A mistake in a
debate is worth a million bucks in the real world. My
Mistakes were the most useful moments in my life.
▪ Practise is Key. And all members must participate in a
Debate.
▪ Do not copy others. Just be you! Being you is the most
suitable approach for you!

Be Careful with these!
▪ Do not get too attached to your position. Be willing to
contribute in any capacity.
▪ Do not become too attached to your Argument. Keep an open
mind (Only then you can practise countering well).
▪ Do not get too Emotional, especially Never get Angry. If you
do, you cannot win the debate.
▪ Do not fall for tactics of your opponent - To rile you up or
distract you. Pay attention closely and calmly throughout.

A Truth

Always Remember This!
▪ Debating is a means for you to Upskill yourself, ONLY!
▪ It is NEVER a Means of Establishing the Truth. (An
eloquent speech doesn’t mean it is the Truth)
▪ So Outside the Debating Forum, Always be Realistic
and Be Connected to the Truth, and stand up for the
Truth.
