These presentations were given at the GDDF 2022 Side Session: Farmer co-design of climate change solution, on May 5, 2022. The interactive session introduced the research of the new Agroecological TRANSITIONS Inclusive Digital Tools (ATDT) project. We looked at types of options available and state-of-the-art innovations and explore options for best practices, and consider farmer-to-farmer exchange, information hubs accessible to farmers, and farmer-advisor linkages and trade-offs of non-digital options. Panelists will assess what more can be done digitally and how to sustain efforts through effective business models for co-design resources. Digital Advice with AI in the Context of Smallholder Farming

• Goal: Creating DAS that combines solutions with
coping strategies (WOCAT, growth mindset to
encourage women).
• Co-design: Bottom-up solutions ensure ownership and
commitment (Enterprise4Society).
• Local context: FairForward (GIZ) to train the chatbot
in local languages for India and Uganda (Hindi and
Luganda).
• Technical set up: WOCAT (World Overview of
Conservation Approaches and Technologies) combined
with local knowledge, agnostic chatbot can run in
messenger services, low data usage.

10. • Aim of democratizing access to information in the agricultural sector, working in the
traceability challenges of raw material for meat supply chain and other
commodities.
• Our digital platform and mobile app work together, carrying out the socio-
environmental monitoring of producers and farms that supply large agribusiness
companies (McDonald’s, Carrefour and many others).
• The improvement in the control of the origin of the animal, in the future reaching
the place of birth of the calves, allows more accurate and lower cost inventories for
companies, being able to share with the producer the gains in low-emission beef.

12. • World’s first voluntary sustainability standard for rice - set of 41 standards focused on
environment, climate, health, human rights, & livelihoods
• Global multi‐stakeholder alliance of over 100 institutional members from public, private,
research, civil society and the financial sector
• Market demand for SRP verified rice is higher than supply - farmers have difficulty
reaching full compliance (locally-relevant technical advice and feedback on performance
assessment needed)
• In smallholder rice systems, very few digital tools focus on whole systems sustainability

13. • The SRP standards are globally applicable standards that require localization
“While the Standard offers normative guidance, practitioners need locally-relevant guidance on appropriate
best practice recommendations that support the requirements of the Standard. National Interpretation
Guidelines may therefore be developed to serve as a bridge between the global standard and local field
application.”

• Co-design and inclusion of civil society, public and private sector stakeholders, and
technical experts is necessary for defining practices that are relevant to the local context
• Very few digital tools to enable and support farmers in practicing and achieving SRP
• Need to involve a diversity of farmers early in development and provide multiple types of outputs for
information transfer including printed and audio/visual material
• Pilot - Agrig8 is designed to support farmers to achieve SRP so they can receive low interest rate loans
based on reduced environmental impact.
