Forming a ‘Mindbank’, modelling informed community in education

It aims to help precarious workers self-organize using peer-to-peer tools and hack existing systems that exploit worker data and knowledge for emancipation from wage labor. A collective, grassroots leadership is needed to build a moral vision of classless societies and integrate modules of value chains and refuge spaces that dismantle current systems of property, trade, production and capital based on data commodification.

Deuze sees cultures existing alongside each other with overlapping values that have different meanings across media, and that there is no single digital culture as it is constantly evolving through human participation.

This short presentation was given on July 16, 2010 by Lee Wright and Adam Duston as part of MassChallenge 2010 judging.
grantcloud was envisioned as a web-based tool that would bring together current information from thousands of sources, along with historical data and community insight to help organizations identify, track, manage, and secure grants that provide new sources of funding for their initiatives.
This project did not advance in MassChallenge and we chose not to pursue it.
Lee's current projects include The History List (www.TheHistoryList.com), a platform for publicizing history-related sites and organizations across the country, and eventicize (www.eventicize.com), a tool for leveraging your social network to raise awareness of your events.

This paper was developed as a discussion guide for a "professional interaction" at teh 2010 Museums and The Web conference, http://www.archimuse.com/mw2010/index.html
There has been an exciting surge of interest in the museum sector in expanding access to museum data through the classic idea of creating a commons. A Web-based multi-institutional museum commons could open up public access to collections, deepening contextual knowledge of objects and helping museum professionals recognize the unseen value of their own collections. For example, collections items that seem orphaned or fragmentary in one institution may enjoy a rich life on-line, once reunited with relevant collections and data from other institutions in an on-line commons environment. Commons-oriented intellectual property policies should also enable content sharing for educational and other non-commercial uses, or they may be used to facilitate new innovations or for-profit businesses beyond the scope of traditional rights-and-reproductions activities.
The Smithsonian Institution and the Balboa Park on-line Collaborative (BPOC) are both large, multi-part organizations with diverse research and outreach missions: together they provide a unique opportunity to explore the potential of the commons model.

Michael Edson: Ten Patterns for Organizational Change

To address this, the Smithsonian used an open, transparent and participatory process to develop a new web strategy using workshops, wikis and public feedback to engage internal and external stakeholders.

National Geographic - Omniture Cafe 6/11/09
The document discusses analyzing social media traffic and visitor behavior on the National Geographic website using their web analytics tool, Omniture SiteCatalyst. It describes how they categorized social media referrers into meaningful groups like social news sites, social networking, social media sharing, and social bookmarking. Analysis of the data showed that while social media drives a lot of traffic, visitors from these sites tend to be less engaged than average visitors and account for a small portion of total page views and conversions. Scholarly Social Machines Essay
Despite many attempts to perturb a scholarly publishing system that is over 350 years old, it feels pretty much like business as usual. I argue that we have become trapped inside the machine, and if we want to change it in an informed way we need to step outside and take a look. First I describe my lens—what I mean by a social machine, and the scholarly social machines ecosystem.
I close with a list of questions that could be workshop discussion points. Presented at the ESWC 2017 Workshop on Enabling Decentralised Scholarly Communication, Portorož - Portorose, May 2017.

The Web We Want: Dealing with the dark side of social media (work in progress)
The document discusses some of the negative impacts of social media platforms, including manipulation of civic messages by third parties during elections, promotion of conspiracy theories and incendiary content, predatory targeting of vulnerable groups, and undermining of regulatory oversight. It argues that as the nature of the web and technologies have changed, those working in the field need to update their skills and knowledge to address issues like protecting audiences and mitigating online harms. Cutting the Gordian Knot — Michael Peter Edson, We Are Museums 2019
This document contains the script for a 15 minute talk on cutting the Gordian knot as a metaphor for solving difficult problems through direct action. It discusses three main defects in museum practice: being too cautious, overestimating indirect action, and being too slow. It argues that museums have tools like institutions, reputation, and convening power but rarely use them convincingly to achieve civic goals. To address issues like climate change, poverty and extremism, museums need to take bolder, more direct action and spend the trust they have earned on important causes, rather than remaining cautious.

The Tortoise and the Hare, Netherlands Museum Congres
Michael Edson was scheduled to give a keynote address at the Netherlands Museum Congress, but was unable to due to the government shutdown in the US. In his remarks, he discusses how the world is changing rapidly, with population growth, internet and mobile connectivity increasing dramatically. He argues that the traditional fable of the Tortoise and the Hare, where slow and steady wins the race, may no longer apply in a world that is changing so quickly. Museums and other institutions need to work faster to keep up with the pace of change and meet the needs of more people around the world seeking access to education and culture.

Ideas about what museums are, who they serve, and the role they play in society are changing with dramatic speed, driven largely by social media and the participatory culture of global networks.
Denmark supports world-class museums, with remarkable collections, expert staff, and beautiful architecture. But how can museum leaders balance the traditional concepts of organizational mission and outcomes with the disruptive possibilities being demonstrated by those who love and use museums in new ways?

Building Production Ready Search Pipelines with Spark and Milvus
Spark is the widely used ETL tool for processing, indexing and ingesting data to serving stack for search. Milvus is the production-ready open-source vector database. In this talk we will show how to use Spark to process unstructured data to extract vector representations, and push the vectors to Milvus vector database for search serving.

The meet-up will be hosted by Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), a research university specializing in engineering science & technology.
Power Grid Model
The global energy transition is placing new and unprecedented demands on Distribution System Operators (DSOs). Alongside upgrades to grid capacity, processes such as digitization, capacity optimization, and congestion management are becoming vital for delivering reliable services.
Power Grid Model is an open source project from Linux Foundation Energy and provides a calculation engine that is increasingly essential for DSOs. It offers a standards-based foundation enabling real-time power systems analysis, simulations of electrical power grids, and sophisticated what-if analysis. In addition, it enables in-depth studies and analysis of the electrical power grid’s behavior and performance. This comprehensive model incorporates essential factors such as power generation capacity, electrical losses, voltage levels, power flows, and system stability.
Power Grid Model is currently being applied in a wide variety of use cases, including grid planning, expansion, reliability, and congestion studies. It can also help in analyzing the impact of renewable energy integration, assessing the effects of disturbances or faults, and developing strategies for grid control and optimization.
