academy, Pune, was built
in two phases between
1986 to 2004 by Architect
Achyut Kanvinde.
Phase I
Built area : 15000sqm
Time : 1986-1989
Phase II
Built area : 11620sqm
Time : 2001-2004

3. • Achyut Kanvinde was inspired by Walter
Groupius.
• Had the influence of
brutalism/modernism.
• He believed in Vernacular Architecture.
• NIA had the form of octagons which took
care of ventilation and excessive heat.
• Had similar facades.
• Proportionate fenestrations.
• Circulation spaces were exposed.

8. • Campus is zoned into academic and residential uses
at lower level.
• Housing and community facilities at higher level.
• There is level difference and drainage pattern
within the site.
• Institutional area is located at the lower lever in
landscaped setting.

9. Arrival court with a water feature and an elevated
walkway connecting the academic zone and hostels.
Also acts as a landmark.
LEGIBILITY

10. Library and computer center acts as a secondary landmark since
all the places are connected to this block through a bridge.

11. COHESIVE STRATEGY
• Octagonal and quadrilateral forms are only used.
• Two or more octagons connect to form a block.
• Octagons in varying sizes with chamfered corners are used.

12. • Clean horizontal and vertical lines are used.
• Façade is plastered in a repetitive pattern.
• Combination of grey and white stone with aggregate plaster is used for
facades.
• RCC is used for frame structure which is exposed.

13. SHARED SPACES
• Open spaces and courtyard formations act as shared spaces
for social exchange and interaction.
• Academic and hostel areas create a compact community
sharing common courtyard.

16. INTEGRATION AND SEGREGATION
• Covered elevated walkway overlooking the landscape connects
various components as a series of cluster, creating as environment
conducive for training and research.

17. At library ,Four octagons joins to form a double height void
as a courtyard has a skylight, providing diffused light
throughout the day.

18. Similarly, dining and recreation blocks also form cluster
through series of octagons which opens to landscaped
courts, verandahs, terraces and pergolas at different levels.

19. Windows are recessed inside to provide shade and are
framed by aggregate plaster.
