Sensely’s proven, empathy-first patient engagement platform leverages Mayo Clinic symptom triage algorithms to deliver care advice. Natural Language Comprehension: Human Machine Collaboration.
In this talk I am proposing the technique of combining human input with data programing and weak supervision to create a high quality model that evolves with feedback. We apply dark data extraction method: snorkel, developed at Stanford (https://hazyresearch.github.io/snorkel/) to create an honor code violation detector (HCVD). Snorkel is a framework that uses inputs from SME’s and business partners and converts them into heuristic noisy rules. It combines the rules using a generative model to determine high and low quality rules and outputs a high accuracy training data based on combined rules.
HCVD detects key phrases (example: do my online quiz) that indicate honor code violation.
We run this model daily and place the HCVD texts (around 2%) in front of humans, the feedback from the humans is periodically checked and the rules are edited
to change the weak supervision to produce a fresh training set for modeling. This is an ongoing and iterative process that uses interactive machine learning to evolve the Natural Language Comprehension model as new data gets collected.
Democratizing NLP content modeling with transfer learning using GPUs
With 1.6 million subscribers and over a hundred fifty million content views, Chegg is a centralized hub where students come to get help with writing, science, math, and other educational needs.The content generated at Chegg is very unique. It is a combination of academic materials and language used by students along with images which could be handwritten. This data is unstructured and the only way to retrieve information from it is to do detailed NLP modeling for specific problems in search, recommendation systems, content tagging, finding relations between content, normalizing, personalized targeting, fraud detection etc. Deep Learning provides an efficient way to build high performance models without the necessity of feature engineering. However typically deep learning requires a huge amount of training data and is computationally expensive.
Transfer learning provides a path in between, it uses features from a related predictive modeling problems. Pre-trained word vectors or sentence vectors do not represent content at Chegg very well. Hence, we develop embeddings for characters, words and sentences that are optimized for building language models, question answering and text summarization using high performing GPUs. These embeddings are then made available for getting analytical insights and building models with machine learning techniques such as logistics regression to wide range of teams (consumer insights, analytics and ML model building). The advantage of this system is that previously unstructured content is associated with structured information developed using high performing GPU’s. In this talk I will give details of the architecture used to build the embeddings and the different problems that are solved using these embeddings.

Putting Design Thinking to Work with Buck Bard of Canary.Works

Putting Design Thinking to Work with Buck Bard of Canary.Works

My colleague and I managed a team of 5 to 7 writers, using Agile processes to successfully overhaul a Help system for complex genetic sequencing software in just over six months. The approach uses 3 weekly sprints that gets each writer 1) analyzing and identifying gaps in existing content 2) writing and updating content, and then 3) peer editing and revising content. The sprints overlap so that every week each writer is actively writing, peer reviewing and editing content.
Facing deadlines for frequent quarterly releases, we used Excel spreadsheets and OneNote notebooks to record meeting notes, topic TOCs and assignments, rather than a more administrative intensive ticket-based system (such as JIRA). Writers, whose skill levels ranged from junior to senior, learned how to use the software through hour-long question-and-answer group sessions with SMEs.
Attend this session to learn how an agile writing process can help boost collaboration and increase comradeship amongst information developers; decrease the time spent with subject matter experts, and optimize content development.

When Rule-Based Chatbots Hit the Wall - How to Overcome their Limitations wit...Information Development World
Most chatbots are rule-based. A rule defines that if certain keywords occur in the user’s question, a certain piece of content should be displayed. For example, “if the question includes words ‘replace’ and ‘battery,’ show the topic about replacing a battery.”
While this method is easy and relatively cheap to implement, it covers only simple use cases. It may work perfectly well if the amount of content is small and it’s not frequently updated. But what about a case when the procedure of replacing a battery is different for different product models? Or what if it’s different depending on the user’s role, and there are multiple possible roles and their combinations? You’d have to explicitly add rules for each variation and instruct the chatbot about the questions the user should be asked when information required for a precise and relevant answer is missing in the user’s question.
On top of that, every time you add new content, you have to manually add new rules. In the long run, rule-based chatbots are expensive and difficult to maintain, if the amount of content is significant and it’s frequently updated.
Another approach is to build a knowledge map of the subject domain which would automatically guide the chatbot about the questions the user should be asked, automatically identify semantic metadata of the content, and map the metadata to the knowledge map. This approach would make the chatbot smarter while reducing the maintenance efforts and costs.
In this session, Alex talks about both approaches and sees which approach works better in different use cases.

The introduction of DLAU and the CCB & CCX licensing model caused quite a stir in the HCL community. As a Notes and Domino customer, you may have faced challenges with unexpected user counts and license costs. You probably have questions on how this new licensing approach works and how to benefit from it. Most importantly, you likely have budget constraints and want to save money where possible. This event will adopt a hybrid format, allowing participants to join us either through an online Mircosoft Teams session or in person at TU/e located at Den Dolech 2, Eindhoven, Netherlands. The meet-up will be hosted by Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), a research university specializing in engineering science & technology.
Power Grid Model
The global energy transition is placing new and unprecedented demands on Distribution System Operators (DSOs). Alongside upgrades to grid capacity, processes such as digitization, capacity optimization, and congestion management are becoming vital for delivering reliable services.
Power Grid Model is an open source project from Linux Foundation Energy and provides a calculation engine that is increasingly essential for DSOs. It offers a standards-based foundation enabling real-time power systems analysis, simulations of electrical power grids, and sophisticated what-if analysis. In addition, it enables in-depth studies and analysis of the electrical power grid’s behavior and performance. This comprehensive model incorporates essential factors such as power generation capacity, electrical losses, voltage levels, power flows, and system stability.
Power Grid Model is currently being applied in a wide variety of use cases, including grid planning, expansion, reliability, and congestion studies. It can also help in analyzing the impact of renewable energy integration, assessing the effects of disturbances or faults, and developing strategies for grid control and optimization.
