Each year, the international Open Access Week is held with activities across the globe to highlight issues around open access to scientific publications. The theme of this year is “Community over Commercialization”. On Wednesday October 25th Karlstad University Library welcomes you to a set of seminars and panels on open access and open science building on the theme. When? 09:00–14:15, Wednesday October 25th, 2023 Where? The University Library I used this slidedeck to open the day with a reminder of the "WHY" question. #OAweek

The Rise of Citizen-Scientists in the Eversmarter World
Knowledge may be expanding exponentially, but the current rate of civilizational learning and institutional upgrading is still far too slow in the century of peak oil, peak uranium, and "peak everything". Humanity needs to gather vastly more data as part of ever larger and more widespread scientific experiments, and make science and technology flourish in streets, fields, and homes as well as in university and corporate laboratories. In this talk, H+ Executive Director Alex Lightman will give an introduction and overview of the big picture of H+ the organization, the magazine, and the conference, and how the participants can make the most of their experience and relationships at the conference. The case for ending embargoes and other beaver dams in the rivers of potentially global knowledge will be made. Lightman will offer a vision of a properly functioning Eversmarter world, ending with a call to action to become a citizen-scientist, and a recruiter of other citizen-scientists.
Alex Lightman is the Executive Director of Humanity+ and the chair of the H+ Summit @ Harvard and of the inaugural H+ Summit held December 2009 in Irvine, California. He is a director of Fortune Nest Corporation (Bahrain, Beijing and Beverly Hills, CA) and of Inova Technology. He is an award-winning educator, an inventor with several US patents issued or pending and the author of over 800,000 words, including 12 articles in h+ magazine, and Brave New Unwired World: The Digital Big Bang and The Infinite Internet, the first book on 4G wireless. He has advised NATO, the US Dept. of Defense, and a number of governments on Internet Protocol version 6, the 128-bit successor to the current Internet, IPv4. Lightman's advocacy led to the only Congressional hearings held on US Internet Leadership, conducted by The Government Reform Committee and at which Lightman testified, leading to implementation of Lightman's recommendations to mandate IPv6 for the US government and require IPv6 as part of government information technology contracts. Lightman studied Civil and Environmental Engineering, and graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1983 (Course I-A), and attended graduate school at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government. He lives in Santa Monica, California, where he runs marathons, and attempts his first Ironman triathlon, in the UK, on August 1, 2010.

The Rise of Citizen-Scientists in the Eversmarter World
Knowledge may be expanding exponentially, but the current rate of civilizational learning and institutional upgrading is still far too slow in the century of peak oil, peak uranium, and "peak everything". Humanity needs to gather vastly more data as part of ever larger and more widespread scientific experiments, and make science and technology flourish in streets, fields, and homes as well as in university and corporate laboratories. In this talk, H+ Executive Director Alex Lightman will give an introduction and overview of the big picture of H+ the organization, the magazine, and the conference, and how the participants can make the most of their experience and relationships at the conference. The case for ending embargoes and other beaver dams in the rivers of potentially global knowledge will be made. Lightman will offer a vision of a properly functioning Eversmarter world, ending with a call to action to become a citizen-scientist, and a recruiter of other citizen-scientists.
Alex Lightman is the Executive Director of Humanity+ and the chair of the H+ Summit @ Harvard and of the inaugural H+ Summit held December 2009 in Irvine, California. He is a director of Fortune Nest Corporation (Bahrain, Beijing and Beverly Hills, CA) and of Inova Technology. He is an award-winning educator, an inventor with several US patents issued or pending and the author of over 800,000 words, including 12 articles in h+ magazine, and Brave New Unwired World: The Digital Big Bang and The Infinite Internet, the first book on 4G wireless. He has advised NATO, the US Dept. of Defense, and a number of governments on Internet Protocol version 6, the 128-bit successor to the current Internet, IPv4. Lightman's advocacy led to the only Congressional hearings held on US Internet Leadership, conducted by The Government Reform Committee and at which Lightman testified, leading to implementation of Lightman's recommendations to mandate IPv6 for the US government and require IPv6 as part of government information technology contracts. Lightman studied Civil and Environmental Engineering, and graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1983 (Course I-A), and attended graduate school at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government. He lives in Santa Monica, California, where he runs marathons, and attempts his first Ironman triathlon, in the UK, on August 1, 2010.

Ny modell för lärares kompetensutveckling och behörighetsprövning

En ny modell för lärares kompetensutveckling och behörighetsprövning infördes vid Karlstads universitet under 2020. Förändringen syftar till att göra lärares kompetensutveckling mer flexibel över tid, individuellt anpassad efter enskilda lärares behov, öppna för andra utbildningsformer än traditionella kurser och att uppmuntra till kontinuerlig kompetensutveckling genom hela yrkeskarriären. Modellen omfattar också ett nytt sätt att validera lärares behörighetsgivande högskolepedagogiska utbildning.
Den tidigare modellen baserades på två obligatoriska interna kurser om vardera 200 timmar. Att en lärare uppfyllt behörighetskraven manifesterades genom obligatoriskt deltagande och godkända inlämningsuppgifter. Upplägget tog inte hänsyn till lärares olika bakgrund och olika undervisningssituationer. Dessutom gjorde omfattningen av kurserna det svåra att passa in i lärares tjänsteplanering. Många lärare deltog därför inte i kurserna förrän formella krav för fortsatt
anställning gjorde det akut. Svagheterna bidrog till att deltagarnas studiemotivation försköts i riktning mot ytlärande och mot att delta med minsta möjliga ansträngning med målet att klara de formella kraven.
Den nya modellen innebär två genomgripande förändringar: Ansvaret för kompetensutveckling flyttas till läraren själv och kompetensutveckling separeras från bedömningen av om läraren uppfyller krav för behörighet enligt SUHFs nationella rekommendation. UPE, den universitetspedagogiska enheten vid Karlstads universitet som hanterar interna utbildningar och annat lärarstöd, tillhandahåller nu ett internt kursutbud med mindre, mer fokuserade och målgruppsanpassade kurser som
lärare själva kan välja efter behov, liksom att de är fria att välja externa kurser.
Validering av lärarens behörighetsgivande högskolepedagogiska utbildning görs nu genom att lärarens kunskaper, färdigheter och förhållningssätt demonstreras i en påbörjad pedagogisk meritportfölj. Portföljens innehåll ska illustrera hur läraren omsätter sin kompetens i praktiskt arbete med utveckling och genomförande av utbildning, ska innehålla utdrag från löpande förda självreflektioner och en självvärdering. Läraren utvecklar portföljen i samspel med andra lärare i en process där fokus är på kollegialt lärande, snarare än på kritik och försvar. Valideringsprocessen är utformad för att i sig utgöra kompetensutveckling för deltagarna.
Att modellen lägger ansvaret för kompetensutveckling på den enskilde har visat sig utmana en del av den traditionella universitetsutbildningskulturen. Det egna ansvaret skapar oro. Men erfarenheterna hittills handlar övervägande om lättnad över att kunna välja tidpunkt, takt och utbildningsinnehåll själv. Också valideringsprocessen upplevs som utvecklande, även för lärare som genomför den efter många år i yrket. UPE upplevs nu mer som relevant stöd än som kontrollorgan. Det kollegiala utbytet lärare emellan har ökat.

This Dissertation explores the particular circumstances of Mirzapur, a region located in the
core of India. Mirzapur, with its varied terrains and abundant biodiversity, offers an optimal
environment for investigating the changes in vegetation cover dynamics. Our study utilizes
advanced technologies such as GIS (Geographic Information Systems) and Remote sensing to
analyze the transformations that have taken place over the course of a decade.
The complex relationship between human activities and the environment has been the focus
of extensive research and worry. As the global community grapples with swift urbanization,
population expansion, and economic progress, the effects on natural ecosystems are becoming
more evident. A crucial element of this impact is the alteration of vegetation cover, which plays a
significant role in maintaining the ecological equilibrium of our planet.Land serves as the foundation for all human activities and provides the necessary materials for
these activities. As the most crucial natural resource, its utilization by humans results in different
'Land uses,' which are determined by both human activities and the physical characteristics of the
land.
The utilization of land is impacted by human needs and environmental factors. In countries
like India, rapid population growth and the emphasis on extensive resource exploitation can lead
to significant land degradation, adversely affecting the region's land cover.
Therefore, human intervention has significantly influenced land use patterns over many
centuries, evolving its structure over time and space. In the present era, these changes have
accelerated due to factors such as agriculture and urbanization. Information regarding land use and
cover is essential for various planning and management tasks related to the Earth's surface,
providing crucial environmental data for scientific, resource management, policy purposes, and
diverse human activities.
Accurate understanding of land use and cover is imperative for the development planning
of any area. Consequently, a wide range of professionals, including earth system scientists, land
and water managers, and urban planners, are interested in obtaining data on land use and cover
changes, conversion trends, and other related patterns. The spatial dimensions of land use and
cover support policymakers and scientists in making well-informed decisions, as alterations in
these patterns indicate shifts in economic and social conditions. Monitoring such changes with the
help of Advanced technologies like Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems is
