Description of task 41:

• Task 41 is the successor to Task 38 (Power-To-Hydrogen and
Hydrogen-To-X) and Task 30 (Global Hydrogen Systems Analysis)
• The task has four subtasks, each contributing to the overall goal of
providing updated parameters describing Hydrogen technologies,
as well as to develop knowledge of how to model Hydrogen in the
value chain
• Establish a closer collaboration between the Hydrogen TCP and the
ETSAP analysis community
• The project period is until the end of 2021

• To provide an updated database on Hydrogen technologies
• Improved knowledge of how to model Hydrogen in the value chain
• Establish a closer collaboration between the Hydrogen TCP and the
ETSAP analysis community

• Sub-task a) Data consolidation of parameters describing hydrogen technologies
• This task complements subtask b as it aims at establishing the data structure and the acquisition
process supporting a sustainable database to fuel the relevant models for Hydrogen in the value
chain

• Sub-task b) Develop knowledge of how to model Hydrogen in the value chain and
improve current methods
• The objective of this subtask is to obtain knowledge regarding the features of an ideal hydrogen
modeling tool
• Sub-task leader: Rob Dickinson (Hydricity Systems)
• Sub-task c) Collaboration with analysts in IEA HQ Analytics and the ETSAP community
• Sub-task leader: Paul Dodds (UCL)

Subtask description

a) Data consolidation of parameters describing Hydrogen technologies
• This task complements subtask b as it aims at establishing the data structure
and the acquisition process supporting a sustainable database to fuel the
relevant models for Hydrogen in the value chain:
• Establishing a database and its underlying infrastructure
• Enable the techno-economic description of the different process steps of a supply chain as
well as the market/end-use for hydrogen
• Populating the database with up-to-date data sets and, in parallel, structuring a
sustainable acquisition process
• Will rely on a structured methodology (validation of data)
Subtask description

a) Data consolidation of parameters describing Hydrogen technologies
• Will cover various hydrogen value chains focusing on generation/processing, storage,
distribution and market/end-use
• Both conventional and renewable sources will be covered
• Data from task 30 and task 38 will be used and dialogue with other TCP tasks will
carried out
• The following prerequisites will be thoroughly addressed as a part of the subtask:
• Which data are needed for TIMES models? Under which format?
• What are the Spatial and temporal resolution needed?
• How do we qualify data sources?
• How do we handle confidential data, or how can we anonymize it?
• How do we ensure representative data of hydrogen technologies/markets?
• How do we define boundary conditions for the provided data, and ensure alignment with
other data sources?

Subtask description

b) Develop knowledge of how to model Hydrogen in the value chain
and improve current methods
• Obtain knowledge regarding the features of an ideal hydrogen modeling tool
• Study how to appropriately represent technologies and inter-sectoral
connectivity in the optimal way
• Study how various groups model hydrogen technologies
• Main focus will be on TIMES models, but other model approaches are included
• Advantages/disadvantages with various model approaches will be described
• Study what components of the “ideal” framework that can realistically be
included in TIMES (and other model approaches)
• Will focus on temporal and spatial resolution, technologies and inter-sectoral
connectivity, consumer behavior, model transparency and user-friendliness

Improved data and modelling
The objective of the project:
• To propose TIMES modelling improvements
• To cooperate with IEA Hydrogen TCP on data & modelling
Why?
• IEA Hydrogen are now establishing a new task “Data and modelling” (Task 41) and
they want to cooperate with ETSAP
• National TIMES teams model hydrogen differently (or do not model hydrogen at all)
• Scenario analysis: Hydrogen is rarely part of the solution
• TIMES modelers need access to reliable data (costs, efficiencies etc)

Description of task 41: 2 • Task 41 is the successor to Task 38 (Power-To-Hydrogen and Hydrogen-To-X) and Task 30 (Global Hydrogen Systems Analysis) • The task has four subtasks, each contributing to the overall goal of providing updated parameters describing Hydrogen technologies, as well as to develop knowledge of how to model Hydrogen in the value chain • Establish a closer collaboration between the Hydrogen TCP and the ETSAP analysis community • The project period is until the end of 2021

  • 4. Main objectives of task 41 4 • To provide an updated database on Hydrogen technologies • Improved knowledge of how to model Hydrogen in the value chain • Establish a closer collaboration between the Hydrogen TCP and the ETSAP analysis community

Sub-tasks 5 • Sub-task a) Data consolidation of parameters describing hydrogen technologies • This task complements subtask b as it aims at establishing the data structure and the acquisition process supporting a sustainable database to fuel the relevant models for Hydrogen in the value chain • Sub-task leader: Laurence Grand-Clement (Persee) • Sub-task b) Develop knowledge of how to model Hydrogen in the value chain and improve current methods • The objective of this subtask is to obtain knowledge regarding the features of an ideal hydrogen modeling tool • Sub-task leader: Rob Dickinson (Hydricity Systems) • Sub-task c) Collaboration with analysts in IEA HQ Analytics and the ETSAP community • Sub-task leader: Paul Dodds (UCL)

Subtask description 7 a) Data consolidation of parameters describing Hydrogen technologies • This task complements subtask b as it aims at establishing the data structure and the acquisition process supporting a sustainable database to fuel the relevant models for Hydrogen in the value chain: • Establishing a database and its underlying infrastructure • Enable the techno-economic description of the different process steps of a supply chain as well as the market/end-use for hydrogen • Populating the database with up-to-date data sets and, in parallel, structuring a sustainable acquisition process • Will rely on a structured methodology (validation of data)

Subtask description 8 a) Data consolidation of parameters describing Hydrogen technologies • Will cover various hydrogen value chains focusing on generation/processing, storage, distribution and market/end-use • Both conventional and renewable sources will be covered • Data from task 30 and task 38 will be used and dialogue with other TCP tasks will carried out • The following prerequisites will be thoroughly addressed as a part of the subtask: • Which data are needed for TIMES models? Under which format? • What are the Spatial and temporal resolution needed? • How do we qualify data sources? • How do we handle confidential data, or how can we anonymize it? • How do we ensure representative data of hydrogen technologies/markets? • How do we define boundary conditions for the provided data, and ensure alignment with other data sources?

This involves tools, systems, processes, people organisation (roles and responsibilities),... -> D3a: Definition of desired data sets to support improved approaches to modelling hydrogen in energy systems and corresponding data management practices -> D4a: Data sets to support improved approaches to modelling hydrogen in energy systems and corresponding data management practices -> D5a: Data sets to support the evaluation of the impact of electrolyser participation in system security markets on the consumption prices

Subtask description 14 b) Develop knowledge of how to model Hydrogen in the value chain and improve current methods • Obtain knowledge regarding the features of an ideal hydrogen modeling tool • Study how to appropriately represent technologies and inter-sectoral connectivity in the optimal way • Study how various groups model hydrogen technologies • Main focus will be on TIMES models, but other model approaches are included • Advantages/disadvantages with various model approaches will be described • Study what components of the “ideal” framework that can realistically be included in TIMES (and other model approaches) • Will focus on temporal and spatial resolution, technologies and inter-sectoral connectivity, consumer behavior, model transparency and user-friendliness

ETSAP Modelling of hydrogen Improved data and modelling The objective of the project: • To propose TIMES modelling improvements • To cooperate with IEA Hydrogen TCP on data & modelling Why? • IEA Hydrogen are now establishing a new task “Data and modelling” (Task 41) and they want to cooperate with ETSAP • National TIMES teams model hydrogen differently (or do not model hydrogen at all) • Scenario analysis: Hydrogen is rarely part of the solution • TIMES modelers need access to reliable data (costs, efficiencies etc) 17 Status, task 41, sub-task c
