- My name is Pieter Zander Johannes. And I was born in the year 1955, in a wealthy Afrikaner family. I lived with my grandmother and grandfather in a house far far away from the city.
- My Grandmother and My Grandfather raised me since I was born all by themselves in their house. They told me that My mother died right after she gave birth to me. And they told me that my Father died in an accident when I was about 2 or 3 years old.
- My Grandparents had a very big farm where they grow their crops and sell them to the merchants. The farm belonged to my family since a very long time ago, since my great great great great grandparents moved from Europe to South Africa.
- There are many workers in my family’s farm. All of them are South African natives, and they work for my family’s farm because my grandparents pay good money to them. My Grandfather is very strict but the workers still work with him. He paid them good money only because he wanted the workers to stay with my family. He whips some of the workers sometimes if they don’t work.
- In my school years, I wake up early in the morning, go to school, come back, and look after my family’s farm with my grandparents. I keep an eye on the workers to see if they actually work or not. All of the workers work hard to earn the money that they earned from their laboring.
- The Native Laborers who were working for my grandparents did not look very pleased with their job. They looked very tired and did not look like they enjoyed having my grandfather as their boss, but as I said before, My grandfather is very strict. He never gave them breaks , unless it is really necessary.
- A couple of years later Both of My Grandparents died. My grandfather died because of old age, and my grandmother freaked out and had a heart attack. My Grandmother’s last word was that she told me to become a good person, and take care of the farm better than grandfather. Both of my grandparents were buried behind my house in front of the farm.
- I was living alone in my huge house, and my farm was losing money as the workers weren’t working at all times. I had thought about it over and over again that I would sell my house and my property just to settle somewhere else in the city to find a good job and build my own family. But then, the thought of my grandmother came up to me to stay at the house and take care of the farm that my family owned for generations.
- I realized what my grandmother meant when she said that I should take care of the farm better than grandfather. I had to appreciate the workers who worked for me, and make my family’s name big again.
- I then started making friends with the workers who worked inside my farmland. They told me that my grandfather was very cruel to them and the only thing that kept them here was the money. They were very nice people and they had families, so I used the money that I had to build a house on my farmland just for the workers to work. I had to keep this a secret, and when the people came to inspect the house, I would tell them it’s a storage room.
- They were very appreciative and they started working more because they are energetic, because their families are in the worker house inside. This has caused me to earn twice as much money. I was so happy that I even gave the workers more pay.
- A lot of people are starting to know about my farm, and it has been showed on the newspaper as one of the most productive farms in the area. As more people are starting to know about my farm, a lot of trouble comes through. They almost found out about the secret that my farm had.
- As a lot more people know about my farm, some poor Afrikaners begged me secretly to work in my farm. They knew that the workers had a good pay, and had a place to live. I accepted them as my new worker, but with a condition that if any inspector person comes, tell them that they are just guests.. I knew that whites and blacks aren’t suppose to get the same pay and live together.
- It was a very long time until someone found out about my farmland’s secret. But then one day, A police snucked in to my farm and seen everything. He beat every worker I had and put handcuffs on me, and called his police buddies.
- I was taken to a court and the court said that I broke many laws. The whites and the blacks were suppose to work, get paid differently, and to live at separated places. I couldn’t do anything, and I felt treated unequally, because everyone should be treated the same, and should be allowed to have the same job.
- I was sent to jail for many years after the session with the court. This is where I meet the love of my life. Her name is Andrea, and she was white and came from a rich afrikaner like me. The reason that she ended up in prison was the same as me, giving both whites and blacks the same chance to be equal, and work in the same job. I loved her because she supported equality like me, and wanted to end aparthied.
- We both got out 10 years later from when we were put in jail because of good behavior. When I came back and take a look at my farm and my house, there was nothing left to see, as I promised my loved one that I would show her my farm. I asked the people around, and they said that since there were no one in the area for years, the government claimed the farmland as theirs.
- I promised my Grandmother that I would take care of her farm, but I failed my goal in life. Then, Andrea said that they could buy land from all the money that they had and start all over again from scratch. I thought it would be a good Idea, so we both put our money together and bought a piece of land, where we would consider it our home .
- Once we bought this land, we farmed the land our selves very hard for many many years, and bought more connected land to extend our farmland. Once our farm was big again, we built a house together, just like the old one.
- I am now 40 years old and so is Andrea. Aparthied ended and We both worked in our farm for a very long time with our 2 children and now, there are many workers working on our land, both black and white both equal, and both have the power to vote for the rights. We have waited for a very long time for equality and now I have achieved the goal of my life, which is to make my farm better than my grand father.
