I Agree With Reservations With The Title
I agree with reservations with the title. For the purposes of this essay, the word describe will be
defined as the active act of either explaining or representing an idea or concept within an area of
knowledge. The word transform will be defined as having a great impact the world . Not to be
confused with change , here, transforming considers a degree of innovation, whilst change
highlights a minor shift. The word seek is key, and will represent the ideathat within the Area of
Knowledge, there can be the active intent to transform or describe.
One event can be interpreted as both transforming and describing, due to the room for subjective
judgement inherent in both of these two ideas. The concepts of description and transformation are
abstract in nature. The idea that one event has the capability of both describing and transforming
the world in different ways is evident in the area of knowledge of history. Here, the description of
the past has the potential to transform the present. The discovery of what happened behind China s
metaphorical walls would forever transform the way Mao and his regime was perceived. A specific
case of this is the French intellectuals involved in The Wind from the East: French Intellectuals, the
Cultural Revolution, and the Legacy of the 1960s which outlines first hand how a group of French
students were seduced by Mao s apparently pure ideology and the perceived cultural and
intellectual impact of the East during the 1960s. This is an

Over the years the Company operated Movies, Rose Garden, and Palace Cinemas. Gaiety and

Death of a Salesman vs. Tragedy and the Common Man
It makes little sense that tragedy should only pertain to those in high ranks. As explained in his
essay Tragedy and the Common Man, Arthur Miller establishes the pattern for his own notion of a
tragedy and the consequent ramifications for the tragic hero. This pattern supports the central idea
that a tragedycan occur for characters who are common men as well as those in high places.
Throughout his paper, Miller demonstrates that it should be possible for every reader to be able to
identify with the tragic hero. Miller redefines tragedy as more common occurrence than what might
happen in tragedies such as portrayed by Shakespeare and other classical writers, thus defining
Death of a Salesmanas a tragedy.
Willy Loman is a tragic hero. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Willy, like traditional tragic heroes, possesses a tragic flaw. The possibility of victory must be
there in tragedy (Miller, Tragedy and the Common Man ). Setting aside Willy s tragic flaw, there
is also a certain amount of hope and optimism that Willy might change. If there is a possibility of
bringing an element of hope into this play, there is also a conceivable possibility of change.
Change is the compelling force without which there would be no hope. And with change comes
a reasonable possibility of victory. Throughout this entire play, Willy lives by the credo be well
liked. Someday I ll have my own business, and I ll never have to leave home any more... bigger
that Uncle Charley! Because Charley is not liked. He s liked, but he s not well liked (Miller,
Death of a Salesman 30) Willy finds this untrue as he increasingly makes less and less money on
business trips. Howard, and now I can t even pay my insurance! You can t eat the orange and
throw away the peel! A man is not a piece of fruit (Miller, Death of a Salesman 82) Willy,
however, refuses to change his view of the world and therefore is destined to continue his struggle
upstream.
What makes this play tragic for me, though, is that Willy does not change. It is sadly his tragic
flaw that brings about this failure. His unwillingness to submit passively to the established order
and values is his demise. He has a set idea in his mind about how he wants to be and

Glenn Close Essay
It is really surprising that these talented actors/actresses have yet to win an Academy Award
(also referred to as an Oscar). I honestly hope Glenn Close wins an Oscar before it s too late,
otherwise the legendary actress will have to settle for the Academy Honorary Award. The award
recognizes exceptional people in film who never received an Oscar.
Number One: Tom Cruise. The actor has been nominated for three Academy Awards, but he has
yet to win the award. Cruise has been nominated twice for Best Actor for Born on the Fourth of
July (1990) and Jerry Maguire (1997). In the year 2000, he was up for the Best Supporting Actor
award for his work in Magnolia.
Number Two: Robert Downey Jr. Even with his extensive film career, Downey Jr. only has two

belonging speech
Belonging speech
Good morning/Afternoon teachers and students today I will be showing you how a sense of
belonging or not belonging greatly influences an individual s identity. A change in identity occurs
when belonging is found through meaningful, intimate relationships, with senses of place,
community, safety and familiarity. The free verse novel, The Simple Gift, composed by Steven
Herrick, the dramatic fairy tale film, Edward Scissor hands, directed and created by Tim Burton
and the novel Matilda composed by Roald Dahl, all explore the concepts of belonging and
relationships through the strong use of literary techniques; and focus on a changing Identity as a
base for belonging. All texts have significantly different perspectives of ... Show more content on

Billy develops another significant relationship with Caitlin, a wealthy girl who is smart enough to
realise none of this means anything , because like Billy, she values a lack of material possessions,
and dislikes the identity associated with being wealthy. Billy s relationship with Caitlin provides
him with a sense of belonging to friendships.
Edward scissor hands tells us a story about an artificial man, Edward Scissor hands , who was
made by a lonely inventor who lived on top of a hill near a small town. Long after his inventor s
death, Edward is brought into society by Meg, a local resident and encounters many new and
interesting things as he attempts to belong in civilisation. This film explores concepts of belonging
to groups or communities and a sense of belonging in relationships shown by Edward s endless
struggle to find clarity and purpose.
A sense of isolation can come from ones difference to others, whether it is physical mental or
spiritual. Edward s hands made out of sharp scissors are iconic of his separation from the rest of
society. They create a physical barrier between him and others which greatly limit the amount of
physical contact Edward can have with others and the rest of the world and in turn creates a sense
of isolation. This is carefully and noticeably communicated by Burton by the use of colour and
contrast, specifically Edward s initial costume is completely black leather, decorated with metal
studs and rings. His hair is

Compare And Contrast Dog s Death And The Blue Bowl
As we go through life, we experience countless losses. Those losses include loved ones such as
family members, friends, or both pets. Some individuals covet their furry friends as family, and
when that family pet dies people exhibit the same feelings of loss as they would for a human.
However, some individuals are not as involved with their pets, and do not experience the same
emotional response to their passing. Nonetheless, the loss of a petis a memorable experience for
most people. In John Updike s Dogs Death and Jane Kenyon s The Blue Bowl, the speakers have
just lost a pet; and although their experiences are similar, their attitudes towards their pets
departure do not completely align. This essay will outline the similarities in these poems, as
well distinguish their differences. Both of these poems share the same plot: the loss of a pet
and the speakers play by play of how that day unfolded. These poems are memories and are not
written in the present which means the speakers are sharing their memories through their own
reality of the experience. Clues that indicate past speech are in words that end in ed in the first
sentence of both poems such as kicked or buried (line 1 pg 548 and line 1 pg 636). In Updike s
poem, the speaker refers to a newspaper as an object tied to the dog. Similarly in Kenyon s poem,
the catis tied to a blue bowl, which the pet is buried with. These objects are apart of the pets
everyday lives, and is something that their owners have

America s Slippery Slope Analysis
America s Slippery Slope In The War On Terrorism
Terrorism is a word that strikes fear into many hearts, thus causing immediate panic to many.
Although, the word terrorism is doesn t have a definite meaning. People often give their own
opinion on terrorism. President Obama said, according to an article by Laura Beth Nielsen What Is
terrorism? , source Al Jazeera, Anytime bombs are used to target civilians, it is an act of
terrorism. . While so many people get caught up in who president Obama is, many people forget
that he is also a human. Just like any other human he has his own opinion and he also makes
mistakes. An opinion is a view or judgement formed about something. So this could mean Obama
is incorrect in his assumption on the definition of terrorism. Now, that is also my opinion, therefore
I could be wrong as well, but what how is anyone supposed to be correct when there is no
legitimate interpretation of the word terrorism.

Lakshmi, The Hindu Goddess Of Wealth And Prosperity
Lakshmi, also named Shri, is the Hindu goddess of wealth and prosperity, both materialistically
and spiritually. The word Lakshmi is derived from the Sanskrit word Laksme, meaning goal .
Lakshmi, subsequently, speaks to the objective of life which includes worldly and as spiritual
prosperity.
Goddess Lakshmi, according to Vishnu Parana was the daughter of Sage Bhrigu and Khyati. It is
often disconcerted that Lakshmi was daughter of goddess Durga, protector of all that s good.

SCHUMANN)
Robert Schumann is regarded as one of the most influential and recognized composers and critics
in history. He was born in Zwickau Germany and was most prominent during the romantic era,
writing what many consider some of the greatest but also worst music of his time. He was married
to Clara Wieck and they had eight children. Even though Schumann was able to accomplish plenty
during his music career, his life is considered short lived. Robert Schumann was extremely talented

Robert was very talented, already attending school for piano by the age of six.
Music, writing, and literature were all a consistent and integral part of Schumann s upbringing
and stayed in his life well into his adulthood. His skills as a pianist were growing and he also
started to gain an interest in writing novels as he was getting older. Robert faced his first great
hardship at the age of sixteen when his father and sister both died. His sister tragically ended up
committing suicide. Before his father died he conditioned that in order for Schumann to receive
his inheritance he would have to attend school at a university. He reluctantly accepted and ended
up enrolling in the University of Leipzig to study law under his mother s wishes. Then in 1827 he
became influenced by the Austrian composer Franz Schubert along with the literary influence of
the German poet Jean Paul Richter. He began to compose songs not long after that. Even though
Robert was at Leipzig to study law most of his time was spent composing and thinking about
music. Around this time he also began to take the piano more seriously and started studying with a
celebrated and decorated teacher, Friedrich Wieck. This is when Robert was first introduced to
Wieck s nine year old daughter Clara, his future wife. Clara was an extraordinary pianist who had
just recently begun a successful concert career under her father s teachings. Ironically Robert

The Sucess of the German Company SAP AG and Enterprise...
Introduction According to Leimbach (2008), the success of the German company, SAP AG, leads
to its enterprise creating software called Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP / SAP ERP) that
equips a company with an integrated solution combining the essential business functions of the
company itself. The purpose of this report is to analyse the application of System Analysis and
Program Development hence, known as SAP/ SAP s ERP systems in business organisations,
investigate the challenges and benefits within the SAP s ERP systems environment, also provide
which application suits the SAP s ERP systems. This report will focus on three main scopes, which
are the overview, the challenges, and benefits and recommendation for SAP s ERP systems
application.
Overview of SAP s ERP Systems One of the systems SAP created is the ERP system, which has
been mentioned in the introduction as Enhancing Resource Planning. Most of the business
organisations are using ERP systems, however, little is known about ERP systems origins and its
improvement to become one of the most important segments within the software market (Leimbach,
2008). Soliman and Youssef (1998) stated that ERP systems have assisted the progress of a process
oriented approach to a system development, as its database can be taken parts by several functions
of particular functional units within the same business, and also built around the business
development in order to enable cross functional units. Therefore, ERP

Judith Butler Performative Acts And Gender Constitution...
Judith Butler s essay, Performative Acts and Gender Constitution: An Essay in Phenomenology and
Feminist Theory , argues that gender identity is a performative accomplishment compelled by
social sanction and taboo . In this context, the word performative means that an act is an act simply
because of it happening, she means that an act is an act by the very fact of it happening. In this
context, genderis a construct based on the acts of one s body. Therefore one may understand this
point to mean that performative acts make up and construct, gender. Because of this, gender is not
the primary identification of an individual s identity. This in turn means that gender is rather an
identity which is ever changing in it s nature. This construction is always done through physical
attributes and changes as time goes by. Therefore one may... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

To make clearer sense of it, I attempted to analyse William s article in light of Butler s main point:
Gender is performative. The former is largely focused on race, particularly racial relations and
differences within the feminist discourse. The crux of William s argument is essentially that there
is a misunderstanding between black feminists and their white counterparts. This is of significant
relevance with concerns to the theory created by the white feminists= Williams claims that it is
because of the over shadowing of patriarchy over the theory, it is inherently tinged with previously
established ideas which may fall into the traditional structure of socially constructed gender roles.
William s therefore accuses white feminists of perpetuating white male patriarchy. Whilst she may
be indirectly stating this, she still raises the question of whether or not the feminist movement is
one of a united

Craft and Design Term Paper Josiah Wedgwood s Creamware The history of Wedgwood and
Creamware When people hear the name Josiah Wedgwood they might think of navy blue and
white pottery but in actual fact Wedgwood was the brains behind so much more. Josiah
Wedgwood was born 1730 and was not like the rest of the young children of his generation as
Wedgwood s family was part of a group called the Dissenters. The Dissenters are a collection of
people that do not agree with the ways of the church so in their own way to rebel they have
created their own society. In this society they have created their own church, community and
school. The school of the Dissenters has been home to some of the greatest mind of history. This
includes Albert Einstein, Josiah Wedgwood and Charles Darwin. These schools are heavily
based in sciences and mathematics so it gives the Dissenters a large step up intellectually.
Wedgwood s recipe of cream coloured earthenware known as creamware was so popular in its

it rarity and its innovative, fresh style; it was also a luxurious, expensive item that only the upper

Summary Of The Working Poor
Michael James Ms. Phelps Pols 210 02 The Working Poor Essay The Working Poor is a story of
hard times in our lives, that can vary in times of the poor struggles, middle class struggles, and
just overall all struggles of everyday people whom have difficult times in their lives. In this
reading we found there were difficult things happening to people in this book in different
chapters and nothing really had a positive note from what the basis of the story had led us to
believe. There is some of this story where its chapter talks about money and how it is breaking
down people s lives simply with all aspects that are fairly difficult with money; such as income
tax as its goes into how the people cannot do their tax returns or pay their taxes, people being
scammed out their money, little to no trust in banks, and it even mentions certain tax company
in its efforts to stress the difficulties faced. Another speaks on some people life stories Ms.
Christine, Ms. Debra Hall, and Ms. Caroline Payne. These women faced many difficulties that it
speaks about and it almost becomes a consideration to be a biography in the story in this chapter
really. Later in the chapters it brings on some hardships on the men in the story where some of
these men make difficult decisions and they are not good to be honest they bring hardship to their
families to the next level because these are times where men should have been considered the

Understanding The Educational Gap Between Nevada and...
Understanding the Educational Gap Between Nevada and Wisconsin Statistics is defined as the
science that deals with the collection, classification, analysis, and numerical facts or data
(Dictionary.com,2012). Sometimes it is important to analyze statistical data in order to understand
how something works or doesn t work. In the case of American public education, there is tons of
statistical data being thrown around, but what do all of these numbers really mean? How does this
data help us? Although statistics provide clarity for constant scrutiny to the public education school

They call this test the High School Proficiency Examination or HSPE. According to the Center
on Education Policy (CEP), they administer the reading, math, and science tests together in
grade ten; however, the writing exam is done separately in grade 11 (CEP, 2010, p. 15). Nevada
seems to be the only state that separates the exams into two separate years, but there is no
evidence that this could negatively impact their state test scores. However, Nevada is not a high
scoring state. In fact, the national assessment of education progress conducted by IES (Institute
of Education Sciences), shows that all of the scores for Nevada are significantly lower than the
national average (2011). The tests used to measure academic achievement (not the exit exam) is
conducted in every state to produce information on how each state is performing individually. So,
why is Nevada testing lower than most states? Unfortunately, there is no easy answer to this
question, but it might be helpful to compare Nevada to a state that has seen more success.
Wisconsin is among the nation s best performing states as long as test scores and graduation rates
are considered. The state has higher test scores than the national averages according to IES (2011).
Wisconsin, however, is very different than Nevada. For example, Wisconsin is one of the 22 states
that has not adopted an exit exam for its high schools. Because of the differences in curriculums
and testing, it makes it difficult

How New Zealand Wine As A Catalyst For Economic...

Topic: How New Zealand wine has become a success in global marketplace in such a relatively
short time.
In the global marketplace, wine has always acted as a catalyst for economic development. New
Zealand being responsible for less than 1% of the global production of wines (NZ Wines, 2014),
The New Zealand wines came into global attention in 1980 s with its production of one of the best
quality wine, Sauvignon blanc in no time gained an international reputation of producing quality
and boutique wines (Howland, 2014). Noted for cool climate wines slow ripened, intense and
with fresh acidity (Howland, 2014, p. 1), Central to their success is New Zealand s maritime
climate, temperature and unabated passion of New Zealand wine producers and the highly
distinctive flavour profile and wine styles (NZ Wines, 2014).
This report provides an elaborate view of social, cultural and economic view of New Zealand wine
including its history, grape varieties wine regions and the future of New Zealand wine. Throughout
I will also be making comparisons with the internationally recognized wine regions and competitors
like Bordeaux and Burgundy.
The origin and the early history of wine making in New Zealand is not known. However, it is
known that Marsden introduced the grape vine in 1819, and an English man James Busby produced

enormous complexity that the very mass of facts presented to the public by press and radio make it
exceedingly difficult for the man in the street to reach a clear appraisement of the situation.
Furthermore, the people of this country are distant from the troubled areas of the earth, and it is
hard for them to comprehend the plight and consequent reactions of the long suffering peoples of
Europe and the effect of those reactions on their governments in connection with our efforts to
promote peace in the world.
In considering the requirements for the rehabilitation of Europe, the physical loss of life, the visible
destruction of cities, factories, mines, and railroads was correctly estimated, but it has become

Contrary to popular belief the origin of The Art of War is unknown. Written in the age of knights
and gentleman Sun Tzu has written a timeless classic in the basic roots of military strategy and
war. The thirteen chapters of knowledge can relate to anything from modern warfare to personal
development. 1. The Analects and origin of a timeless classic in military strategy A. The Analects

From respecting your enemy to understanding your own weaknesses the author provides the reader
a strategy to succeed on any battlefield.
Historians estimate that the Art of Warwas written in China in around the fourth century.
Although the book was written over 2,000 years ago it currently sits atop every critical reading
list for both the military and civilian world. Sun Tzu was a General so the book is geared more
towards the military, much like the tools you learn as a service member the strategies used in
this book can be employed within all walks of life. It has had an impact on today s modern
society by offering a methodical way of thinking that is applicable in just about any
circumstance. The Art of War teaches a form of critical thinking which is essential to mission
success. Critical thinking is reasoned thinking, a disciplined thinking that is clear, rational, open
minded, and informed by evidence (dictionary.com). Great leaders have been known to employ
this strategy as part of their decision making process. By clearly defining your intentions you can
begin to view the path towards your desired goal. The first of thirteen chapters entitled Laying
Plans explores the fundamentals of leadership. Moral law according to Sun Tzu causes people to
be in complete accord with their ruler, so they will follow him regardless of their lives,

How Technology Has Become Increasingly Globalized And Is...
Technology has become increasingly globalized and is now a key utility that is both easily
accessible and convenient in daily life. With the added perpetual use of the Internet, many people
blindly trust their familiar devices and have little to no reluctance about exposing their personal
information online. What many fail to recognize is that tech companies such as Facebook and
Google track their online activity and are incessantly storing and selling their information. A user
may also willingly offer their information to these companies when they ask for it under the guise
of personalizing the user s experience. Often times the user s information is sold to feature

University Of Florida s Online Program
University of Florida s Online Program The University of Florida s (UoF) realization that brick and
mortar schools no longer serve as the only means to attaining a higher education established an
institutional paradigm shift (Kuhn, 2012) on education delivery. The university s evolution of an
online educationdeveloped alongside the growth of technology (Blocher, DeMontes, Willis, Tucker,
2002) and the needs of the community (Universityof Florida, Distance Learning, 2016). For the
UoF, online programs began transforming as early as 1947 when challenged to adapt during
world events such as the need to deliver GED home study courses to nearly 6,000 immigrants
(University of Florida, History, 2016). In years that followed, an increasingly competitive
environment (Volery Lord, 2000) led to the video taping of lectures in 1991 and to the online
courses and Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) that initiated in 2013. In its early
development MOOCs were housed under the Coursera website since it provided an opportunity to
test online courses (Coursera.com, 2016; CollegeFactual, 2016). Today, the UoF houses both
MOOCs and online programs within the Division of Continuing Education (DCE), which the
university established in 2009 and dedicated full time faculty to it due to the steady growth of

Telluric Screw Research Paper
In the 18th, century many elements were starting to be discovered so scientists faced the problem
of trying to arrange them. At this time the actual masses of the elements could not be measured so
instead they compared them with the mass of hydrogen, or the relative atomic mass. Firstly in 1862
Alexandre Beguyer de Chancoutois arranged the elements into a three dimensional form of
classification called the telluric screw. The telluric screw plotted the elements on the outside of a
cylinder where one complete turn corresponded to an atomic weight increase of 16. This resulted in
curtain elements appearing on the same vertical line as other element after one full turn of the
cylinder. These elements were elements that had similar properties to other elements. This was very
helpful in the development of the periodic table because it was the first known time that the

The periodic table is important for scientists today because it is an easy way to order elements
based on trends and because of this we can quickly identify the trends and properties of an
element just by looking at its position on the table. The table is useful for students and scientists
because it helps predict the types of chemical reactions that are likely for an element. Rather than
memorise facts and figures for each element, a quick glance at the table reveals a lot about the
reactivity of an element, whether it is likely to conduct electricity, whether it is hard or soft, and
many other characteristics. Not only does the table enable us to find out properties of known
elements, but it can predict the properties of elements not yet discovered. Mendeleev was the first
person to leave gaps in the periodic table for elements not yet discovered, so we can predict in
much detail the properties of the element that would fit in the gaps that have been left

The Iran Contra Affair Involving Ronald Reagan
In class, we discussed the Iran Contra Affair involving Ronald Reagan. However, we did not go in
depth about public opinion, George H.W. Bush s involvement, or how people feel about it today.
This paper will seek to continue this topic. For example, the Iran Contra polls showed that most
Americans did not believe Regan s cover stories, yet there was never a push for him to pay the
political price, which would ultimately have been impeachment. Thus this paper will further
attempt to understand the mindset of people that allowed these events to occur with little penalty.
The Public Opinion
To begin, Congress, by fair vote, decided in the 1980s that the United States should not assist the
contras fighting the socialist Sandinista government of Nicaragua (Corn 2006). Yet, the Reagan
White House concocted several imaginative ways to pull an end run around democracy (Corn
2006). Reagan s decisions such as selling weapons to Iran were made with the knowledge that he
would not suffer a decline in presidential approval. Thus, Reagan took various steps that were
violations of law that not only involved himself, but members of the CIA. By 1986, two big
revelations happened that caused this scandal to abrupt publically. The first was the shoot down of
a cargo plane over Nicaragua and the admission by the sole survivor that the plane had been
delivering arms to the Contras against congressional restrictions (Kornbluh 2011). The second,
revelation was the news story of Lebanon that stated

and Pete, there is a lot to do with poverty, loss of family and independence. Only in different
ways. Ishmael is on his own and has to find his own food, water and shelter along with a few
friends. The boys are all young but were thrown into the real world very quickly and
unexpectedly. Mister and Pete have their mothers, but it does not matter as of the mothers do not
seem to care for their children as much as they should. Mister and Pete come home to rarely any
food at all, no money and are scared of one day, no shelter. Mister has to take charge in his home
as a result of his motherbeing a drug addict and does not try to help, just like Ishmael had to be
his own person by reason of the believed loss of his family. In the film, police came to search the
apartment. Mister and Pete hid as they do not want to depart to Riverview, the children s home.
Every day, the two boys are avoiding the police or running from them. They must buy their own
food, take care of their home and one another. Mister steps up and tries his best to provide and
care for Pete, although being thirteen years of age, he cannot yet acquire a job. In the memoir,

Not only did they flourish, but the parents, especially the father, used every obstacle and every

When on the island, they thanked God for the provisions that existed on the island. God was the

Kosovo has been coveted because it is in a good location with many mountains guarding it and has

Film makers use many historical events to spark up and idea for a movie. One historical event that
is commonly used is war. One advantage a film maker has when using war as a movie plot is that
there is already a lot of drama in war. This may seem like a good advantage for the film maker,
however focusing on all of the drama of warleaves much of the actual info. When watching a war
movie, you may feel like you have an understanding about the war, but when you really compare a

I read the section about the battles that took place during WWII. It brought to my minds that in
real life. There are more important things during a war than finding a private Ryan. War is a huge
event and the little things like finding a person to keep the family name going is too small to
include in war history. This is what separates the movies from the real life. Another difference is
they don t show the actual planning it takes to start an attack or the inelegance that is needed to
set up the perfect defense barrier to prevent the advancement of the enemy soldiers. A real battle
can last days, weeks, months, or years, compared to movie war that lasts not even a day and has
one guy or one platoon take on the entire other side. The casualties of real war is tremendous,
rather than movies where you see almost the same characters in the whole movie accomplishing
some of the most intense tasks with only one or two dying. Also, in movie war you don t see the
other side s horror. You think all the opponents are bad horrible people that deserve to die, when
they are just soldiers doing their job and the only reason we are fighting them is because of a bad

The Importance Of Instruction For Reading Comprehension
Review of Literature Now that we have the background of the five components I want to hone in on
the topic of differentiating instruction for reading comprehension. Children have always come to
school with a wide variety of literacy experiences and abilities. Teachers have struggled for years to
meet the needs of all of their learners. Historically, teachers have grouped their students in attempts
to arrange their instruction to meet the different needs of individuals. They have attempted various
types of grouping arrangements during the literacy block, including needs based homogeneous
groups, interest based groups, or individualized instruction. However, it has become clear that it is
not the grouping arrangement that matters; it is what the teacher does with each group of children
that makes the difference. (Taylor, 2000) Differentiated instruction can only occur if the teacher
possesses a deep knowledge of the readingprocess, an understanding of the strengths and needs of
her students, and the ability to adapt their teaching to the students needs. I feel that differentiated
instruction is needed to close the ever growing achievement gap of student s reading comprehension
. No one way will work for all students. Differentiation strategies applied to reading can be designed
to help students learn a range of skills including, phonics, comprehension, fluency, word recognition
and prediction. In the decades before it was noted that whole group instruction was the most

Pine Wilt Essay
Pine wilt is a disease of pine trees caused by Pinewood nematodes, a microscopic roundworm.
Though all species of pines found east of the Rocky Mountains in the United States are hosts,
Pinewood nematode is most commonly found on Scotch pine. Native pine tree species are
resistant, with the nematodes being more of a problem on introduced species of pines. Most
often the first sign of pine wilt is the sudden decline and death of an entire pine tree, usually
from the warmest part of the summer through the fall. The dead tree could retain its needles for
as long as one year. Because the dead wood is dry it becomes very brittle. Pinewood nematode is
transmitted from tree to tree by pine sawyer beetles which overwinter as larvae in dead pines or
pine logs which still have the bark attached. After pupating, the adult pine sawyer beetles, carrying
nematodes in their tracheae, fly to healthy host pine trees where the nematodes enter through
feeding wounds. Pinewood nematodes migrate to resin canals where they feed and rapidly
reproduce. The resin canal system is damaged and water movement in the tree is disrupted. Once
the pine tree dies the nematodes continue to feed and reproduce on blue stain fungus which infects
the tree. In summer, female pine sawyer beetles carry nematodes as they fly back to dead pine
wood where they lay their eggs. Eggs... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Essay on Theme of Death in White Noise
White Noise
Death is probably the most feared word in the English language. Its undesired uncertainty threatens
society s desire to believe that life never ends. Don DeLillo s novel White Noise tells the bizarre
story of how Jack Gladney and his family illustrate the postmodern ideas of religion, death, and
popular culture. The theme of death s influence over the character mentality, consumer lifestyle, and
media manipulation is used often throughout DeLillo s story. Perhaps, the character most
responsive to death is Jack Gladney. In fact, he is so consumed by his fear of death that his ordinary
thought processes are often interrupted by the question: Who will die first (DeLillo 15)? In Jack s

Duvall notes that forms of credit...are crucial to Jack s function as a consumer, and Jack stops
thinking about death by thinking of it in terms of a credit card: a way to delay the payment
process(136). Furthermore, Jack uses his credit to create a sense of power over his fear of
death. I sent clerks into their fabric books and pattern books to search for elusive designs. I
began to grow in value and self regard. I filled myself out, found new aspects of myself, located
a person I d forgotten existed....The more money I spent, the less important it seemed. I was
bigger than these sums (DeLillo 83 84). According to Mark Conroy, author of From Tombstone
to Tabloid: Authority Figured in White Noise, this illustrates what one could call DeLillo s Law
of Consumption: that people expend money in direct proportion to their fear of death or
dishonor (102). Again, Jack would hide the idea of death through shopping by purchasing items
that gave him a fresh, new look; a look that death would not give because death is old and bland.

Metacognition and Transfer of Learning
Suppose that a student learns a mathematical procedure such as how to find the area of a
parallelogram. Later, when the student is given a parallelogram problem like the one he or she has

well on a retention test. However, when this student is asked to find the area of an unusually shaped

In contrast, backward reaching transfer occurs when one is faced with a problem and looks back
on what he or she has learned in other situations to help in this new situation.
Factors that contribute to transfer of learning
Initial Learning
Without an adequate level of initial learning, transfer cannot be expected (Mestre, 2002). The
importance of initial learning was illustrated by a series of studies designed to access the effects of
learning to program in the computer language LOGO. When initial learning was accessed, it was
found that students often had not learned enough about LOGO to provide a basis for transfer
(Bransford, Brown, and Cocking, 1999). Many studies that have failed to produce transfer have
resulted from insufficient opportunities for students to learn efficiently in the first place (Mestre,
2002). Understanding
Transfer is also affected by the degree to which people learn with understanding rather than merely
memorizing. Judd s classic studies of learning to throw darts at underwater targets would be a
perfect exampled of how understanding is positively correlated with transfer. In sum, Judd s studies
demonstrated the value of learning with understanding rather than simply mimicking a set of fixed
procedures (Bransford

Jewellery Box Essay
PARTS OF A WHOLE HISTORY
Jewellery has been around since the stone age, after the Neanderthals had gained the knowledge
of cutting and molding, accordingly the origin of jewellery box can be traced for over the
centuries, however the exact reference to the first ever made jewellery box is not easily available.
Throughout history a jewellery box was at times considered as a casket and also treated as
miniature treasure chests. People would typically craft them from the high quality and
exceptional materials. They were once regarded as a symbol of wealth and luxury and hence were
originally designed for royalty and priests, who could afford to own valuables and were designed
by local craftsmen and artisans.
Keeping jewellery safe and in a good condition is the primary motive of a jewellery box. Initially
they made trinket boxes which were smaller in size as compared to a multicompartmental
jewellery box. Some had myriad compartments, drawers, trays, and velvet slots for rings which

Summary Of Jeannette Walls The Silver Star
In the novel, The Silver Star, by Jeannette Walls, a conflicted mother, named Charlotte, struggles
with taking care of her two kids named, Liz and Jean. Jean is a twelve year old girl who goes by
the name Bean. She is very responsible and good at taking care of herself. Liz is fifteen years old
and she takes care of Bean and herself. The girls try hard to figure out where to stay whenever their
motherunexpectedly leaves for a couple days.
In the beginning of the novel, Liz and Bean did not mind their mother leaving them home alone
without any supervision. The girls did not mind it at all. I wasn t worried that Mom had been
gone for four days. I was more worried about the chicken pot pies. (Walls 1 2). Here it shows how
the narrator, Bean, does not mind her mother ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Bean loves living in Byler, Virginia with her uncle. Mom had me a little worried, but to be
honest, I was relieved to be back in Byler. (Walls 82). Bean was a little worried about her mother,
even though she enjoyed living with Uncle Tinsley, but Liz knew that their mom just needed
some time for herself. How long do you think it will take mom to get settled in? I asked Liz .
There s getting settled in, Liz said, and then there s getting a grip on things. (Walls 82). After a
little while Charlotte began calling the girls once a week and talked to them about future plans.
Lots of kids in New York went to private schools, but they way beyond our budget. Liz and I
rightly belonged in one of those special public schools for gifted students, she explained, but it
was too late to apply this year, so what we needed to do was start the school year in Byler. (Walls
114). Charlotte seems to still be trying to settle in. The girls just end up staying with Uncle Tinsley
for the rest of the time, as their mother tries to settle

Influence Of John Locke s Second Treatise On Government
Political organization is the framework for a government s operation. It is generally highly varied
between different governments, but often takes one of several standard forms, which tend to be
categorized as tending toward democratic or an authoritarian. However, whatever its structure may
be, a government must have political legitimacy in order to function and maintain a monopoly over
its subjects and affairs. Governmentis perceived to be legitimate by those it rules when its political
organization operates unequivocally within certain parameters deemed appropriate by its subjects,
and when punishment and law is executed equitably. Given that the parameters for government
affairs are based on public perception, which is built off of societal... Show more content on

Contemporary scholars have built off John Locke s ideas on legitimacy to conclude several factors
that weigh into whether or not the people perceive government as legitimate, such as whether or
not the state s actions can be morally defended. In plain terms, the people must view having the
government as a preferable alternative to not having the government. There is no consent if the
people resent the government s existence or feel that the government s existence is unjustified.
Another important factor of legitimacy is the extent to which the people feel obligated to obey
government edict without coercive measures. If the people do not feel obligated to follow the state
s commands, the government then obviously lacks legitimacy. Any obligation a state s subjects feel
stems from the government s justifiability and moral defensibility. These two factors must be strong
enough to compel the subjects into following government order instead of following alternative
pursuits to accomplish individual goals. Legitimate government actually has this ability, while
illegitimate authority merely purports it. However, even legitimate governments have parameters
that limit what the state may ask of its subjects. These parameters are derived from the subjects,
based on what they feel is appropriate for the government to do and what they will allow the
government to do without

African American Males and the World
The world has come a very long way since segregation was demolished with the help of Dr.
Martin Luther King Jr. This has opened a lot of doors for African Americans in the United States.
Better job opportunities and better chances at managing a stable family life. Sadly as time has
passed and we have rolled into the 21st century things aren t looking so great for the African
males in school. This rate changes from time to time, yet we don t know why or what it really is.
So, what is the average graduation rate for African Americanmales and why? Statistics, the one
source of information that almost everyone turns to in order to determine how often something
happens. With statistics we can see just what are the chances of a African male graduating against
compared to others. Apparently, 54% of most Africans males actually graduate from high school,
that s not bad. The other 46% show little to no effort then or drop out, which explains why their
scores would be below counterparts in other racial and ethnic groups in the school. Let us not
forget though, these are only statistics. Dropouts, plays another role in the game of graduation.
Now there are times where we all just want to quit or think that we ve reaches our limits , but it
seems that is mostly common in the African community. Now I m not saying all Africans, just
some who grew up in that type of environment where reaching limits is okay and that they shouldn
t try to surpass it. Now in order to actually tell

  • 2. I Agree With Reservations With The Title I agree with reservations with the title. For the purposes of this essay, the word describe will be defined as the active act of either explaining or representing an idea or concept within an area of knowledge. The word transform will be defined as having a great impact the world . Not to be confused with change , here, transforming considers a degree of innovation, whilst change highlights a minor shift. The word seek is key, and will represent the ideathat within the Area of Knowledge, there can be the active intent to transform or describe. One event can be interpreted as both transforming and describing, due to the room for subjective judgement inherent in both of these two ideas. The concepts of description and transformation are abstract in nature. The idea that one event has the capability of both describing and transforming the world in different ways is evident in the area of knowledge of history. Here, the description of the past has the potential to transform the present. The discovery of what happened behind China s metaphorical walls would forever transform the way Mao and his regime was perceived. A specific case of this is the French intellectuals involved in The Wind from the East: French Intellectuals, the Cultural Revolution, and the Legacy of the 1960s which outlines first hand how a group of French students were seduced by Mao s apparently pure ideology and the perceived cultural and intellectual impact of the East during the 1960s. • 4. Death of a Salesman vs. Tragedy and the Common Man It makes little sense that tragedy should only pertain to those in high ranks. As explained in his essay Tragedy and the Common Man, Arthur Miller establishes the pattern for his own notion of a tragedy and the consequent ramifications for the tragic hero. This pattern supports the central idea that a tragedycan occur for characters who are common men as well as those in high places. Throughout his paper, Miller demonstrates that it should be possible for every reader to be able to identify with the tragic hero. Miller redefines tragedy as more common occurrence than what might happen in tragedies such as portrayed by Shakespeare and other classical writers, thus defining Death of a Salesmanas a tragedy. The possibility of victory must be there in tragedy (Miller, Tragedy and the Common Man ). Setting aside Willy s tragic flaw, there is also a certain amount of hope and optimism that Willy might change. If there is a possibility of bringing an element of hope into this play, there is also a conceivable possibility of change. Change is the compelling force without which there would be no hope. And with change comes a reasonable possibility of victory. Throughout this entire play, Willy lives by the credo be well liked. Someday I ll have my own business, and I ll never have to leave home any more... bigger that Uncle Charley! Because Charley is not liked. He s liked, but he s not well liked (Miller, Death of a Salesman 30) Willy finds this untrue as he increasingly makes less and less money on business trips. Howard, and now I can t even pay my insurance! You can t eat the orange and throw away the peel! A man is not a piece of fruit (Miller, Death of a Salesman 82) Willy, however, refuses to change his view of the world and therefore is destined to continue his struggle upstream. What makes this play tragic for me, though, is that Willy does not change. It is sadly his tragic flaw that brings about this failure. A sense of isolation can come from ones difference to others, whether it is physical mental or spiritual. Edward s hands made out of sharp scissors are iconic of his separation from the rest of society. Judith Butler s essay, Performative Acts and Gender Constitution: An Essay in Phenomenology and Feminist Theory , argues that gender identity is a performative accomplishment compelled by social sanction and taboo . In this context, the word performative means that an act is an act simply because of it happening, she means that an act is an act by the very fact of it happening. In this context, genderis a construct based on the acts of one s body. Therefore one may understand this point to mean that performative acts make up and construct, gender. This is of significant relevance with concerns to the theory created by the white feminists= Williams claims that it is because of the over shadowing of patriarchy over the theory, it is inherently tinged with previously established ideas which may fall into the traditional structure of socially constructed gender roles. The university s evolution of an online educationdeveloped alongside the growth of technology (Blocher, DeMontes, Willis, Tucker, 2002) and the needs of the community (Universityof Florida, Distance Learning, 2016). For the UoF, online programs began transforming as early as 1947 when challenged to adapt during world events such as the need to deliver GED home study courses to nearly 6,000 immigrants (University of Florida, History, 2016). In years that followed, an increasingly competitive environment (Volery Lord, 2000) led to the video taping of lectures in 1991 and to the online courses and Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) that initiated in 2013. In its early development MOOCs were housed under the Coursera website since it provided an opportunity to test online courses (Coursera.com, 2016; CollegeFactual, 2016). Today, the UoF houses both MOOCs and online programs within the Division of Continuing Education (DCE), which the university established in 2009 and dedicated full time faculty to it due to the steady growth of online education (University of Florida, Distance and Continuing Education, 2016). • 26. Telluric Screw Research Paper In the 18th, century many elements were starting to be discovered so scientists faced the problem of trying to arrange them. At this time the actual masses of the elements could not be measured so instead they compared them with the mass of hydrogen, or the relative atomic mass. Firstly in 1862 Alexandre Beguyer de Chancoutois arranged the elements into a three dimensional form of classification called the telluric screw. The telluric screw plotted the elements on the outside of a cylinder where one complete turn corresponded to an atomic weight increase of 16. This resulted in curtain elements appearing on the same vertical line as other element after one full turn of the cylinder. These elements were elements that had similar properties to other elements. The periodic table is important for scientists today because it is an easy way to order elements based on trends and because of this we can quickly identify the trends and properties of an element just by looking at its position on the table. The table is useful for students and scientists because it helps predict the types of chemical reactions that are likely for an element. Rather than memorise facts and figures for each element, a quick glance at the table reveals a lot about the reactivity of an element, whether it is likely to conduct electricity, whether it is hard or soft, and many other characteristics. Not only does the table enable us to find out properties of known elements, but it can predict the properties of elements not yet discovered. • 27. The Iran Contra Affair Involving Ronald Reagan In class, we discussed the Iran Contra Affair involving Ronald Reagan. However, we did not go in depth about public opinion, George H.W. Bush s involvement, or how people feel about it today. This paper will seek to continue this topic. For example, the Iran Contra polls showed that most Americans did not believe Regan s cover stories, yet there was never a push for him to pay the political price, which would ultimately have been impeachment. Thus this paper will further attempt to understand the mindset of people that allowed these events to occur with little penalty. The Public Opinion To begin, Congress, by fair vote, decided in the 1980s that the United States should not assist the contras fighting the socialist Sandinista government of Nicaragua (Corn 2006). Yet, the Reagan White House concocted several imaginative ways to pull an end run around democracy (Corn 2006). Reagan s decisions such as selling weapons to Iran were made with the knowledge that he would not suffer a decline in presidential approval. Thus, Reagan took various steps that were violations of law that not only involved himself, but members of the CIA. By 1986, two big revelations happened that caused this scandal to abrupt publically. The first was the shoot down of a cargo plane over Nicaragua and the admission by the sole survivor that the plane had been delivering arms to the Contras against congressional restrictions (Kornbluh 2011). When watching a war movie, you may feel like you have an understanding about the war, but when you really compare a war movie to an actual war you find that there is a lot of factual information left out. There are more important things during a war than finding a private Ryan. War is a huge event and the little things like finding a person to keep the family name going is too small to include in war history. This is what separates the movies from the real life. Another difference is they don t show the actual planning it takes to start an attack or the inelegance that is needed to set up the perfect defense barrier to prevent the advancement of the enemy soldiers. • 33. The Importance Of Instruction For Reading Comprehension Review of Literature Now that we have the background of the five components I want to hone in on the topic of differentiating instruction for reading comprehension. Children have always come to school with a wide variety of literacy experiences and abilities. Teachers have struggled for years to meet the needs of all of their learners. Historically, teachers have grouped their students in attempts to arrange their instruction to meet the different needs of individuals. They have attempted various types of grouping arrangements during the literacy block, including needs based homogeneous groups, interest based groups, or individualized instruction. However, it has become clear that it is not the grouping arrangement that matters; it is what the teacher does with each group of children that makes the difference. (Taylor, 2000) Differentiated instruction can only occur if the teacher possesses a deep knowledge of the readingprocess, an understanding of the strengths and needs of her students, and the ability to adapt their teaching to the students needs. I feel that differentiated instruction is needed to close the ever growing achievement gap of student s reading comprehension . No one way will work for all students. Differentiation strategies applied to reading can be designed to help students learn a range of skills including, phonics, comprehension, fluency, word recognition and prediction. • 36. Pine Wilt Essay Pine wilt is a disease of pine trees caused by Pinewood nematodes, a microscopic roundworm. Though all species of pines found east of the Rocky Mountains in the United States are hosts, Pinewood nematode is most commonly found on Scotch pine. Native pine tree species are resistant, with the nematodes being more of a problem on introduced species of pines. Most often the first sign of pine wilt is the sudden decline and death of an entire pine tree, usually from the warmest part of the summer through the fall. The dead tree could retain its needles for as long as one year. Because the dead wood is dry it becomes very brittle. Pinewood nematode is transmitted from tree to tree by pine sawyer beetles which overwinter as larvae in dead pines or pine logs which still have the bark attached. After pupating, the adult pine sawyer beetles, carrying nematodes in their tracheae, fly to healthy host pine trees where the nematodes enter through feeding wounds. Pinewood nematodes migrate to resin canals where they feed and rapidly reproduce. The resin canal system is damaged and water movement in the tree is disrupted. Once the pine tree dies the nematodes continue to feed and reproduce on blue stain fungus which infects the tree. Don DeLillo s novel White Noise tells the bizarre story of how Jack Gladney and his family illustrate the postmodern ideas of religion, death, and popular culture. The theme of death s influence over the character mentality, consumer lifestyle, and media manipulation is used often throughout DeLillo s story. The importance of initial learning was illustrated by a series of studies designed to access the effects of learning to program in the computer language LOGO. When initial learning was accessed, it was found that students often had not learned enough about LOGO to provide a basis for transfer (Bransford, Brown, and Cocking, 1999). Many studies that have failed to produce transfer have resulted from insufficient opportunities for students to learn efficiently in the first place (Mestre, 2002). It is generally highly varied between different governments, but often takes one of several standard forms, which tend to be categorized as tending toward democratic or an authoritarian. Contemporary scholars have built off John Locke s ideas on legitimacy to conclude several factors that weigh into whether or not the people perceive government as legitimate, such as whether or not the state s actions can be morally defended. In plain terms, the people must view having the government as a preferable alternative to not having the government. There is no consent if the people resent the government s existence or feel that the government s existence is unjustified. Another important factor of legitimacy is the extent to which the people feel obligated to obey government edict without coercive measures. If the people do not feel obligated to follow the state s commands, the government then obviously lacks legitimacy. Any obligation a state s subjects feel stems from the government s justifiability and moral defensibility. These two factors must be strong enough to compel the subjects into following government order instead of following alternative pursuits to accomplish individual goals. Legitimate government actually has this ability, while illegitimate authority merely purports it.
