Strategic Intervention Material: Gene Therapy
Gene therapy is a technique for correcting defective genes responsible for disease. There are four approaches: inserting a normal gene to compensate for a nonfunctional one, replacing an abnormal gene with a normal one, repairing an abnormal gene through reverse mutation, or changing gene regulation. The first gene therapy treated Ashanti DeSilva for SCID in 1990 by removing white blood cells, inserting the missing gene, and returning the cells. Viruses like retroviruses and adenoviruses are used as vectors to deliver therapeutic genes. While promising, gene therapy faces challenges like short gene duration, immune responses, viral vector safety, and treating multigene disorders. The first death in 1999 slowed progress but research continues toward FDA approval.

There are two main types: quid pro quo harassment, where sexual favors are demanded in exchange for job benefits, and hostile work environment harassment, where unwelcome sexual conduct interferes with work performance or creates an intimidating environment. Sexual harassment has negative effects and can be committed by those in positions of power over victims.

- Photosynthesis is a two-stage process where light energy is converted to chemical energy. The light reaction uses light energy to produce ATP and NADPH. The dark reaction uses these products to fix carbon and produce glucose.

The meet-up will be hosted by Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), a research university specializing in engineering science & technology.
Power Grid Model
The global energy transition is placing new and unprecedented demands on Distribution System Operators (DSOs). Alongside upgrades to grid capacity, processes such as digitization, capacity optimization, and congestion management are becoming vital for delivering reliable services.
Power Grid Model is an open source project from Linux Foundation Energy and provides a calculation engine that is increasingly essential for DSOs. It offers a standards-based foundation enabling real-time power systems analysis, simulations of electrical power grids, and sophisticated what-if analysis. In addition, it enables in-depth studies and analysis of the electrical power grid’s behavior and performance. This comprehensive model incorporates essential factors such as power generation capacity, electrical losses, voltage levels, power flows, and system stability.
Power Grid Model is currently being applied in a wide variety of use cases, including grid planning, expansion, reliability, and congestion studies. It can also help in analyzing the impact of renewable energy integration, assessing the effects of disturbances or faults, and developing strategies for grid control and optimization.
