He was the founder of the Hospitaller Order of San Juan de Dios. He was the initiator of the modern hospital and is the patron saint of the sick, nurses, hospitals and firefighters, co-patron of Granada.
2. He was born in 1495 in the Toledo town of Casarrubios del Monte,
3. His mother was Christian and his father was Jewish;
He spent his childhood in Portugal, at the age of 12 he
settled in Torralba de Oropesa (Toledo, Spain), in the house
of Francisco Cid Mayoral, whom he served as pastor.
4. At the age of 27 (1523) he enlisted in the army,
to escape an engagement to marry a girl he did not love.
5. He enlisted in the troops of infantry captain Juan Ferruz,
who in turn was at the service of Emperor Charles I, in the
defense of Fuenterrabía, against the French troops.
6.
7. As a soldier, he was hardly a model of holiness, taking part in the
gambling, drinking, and pillaging that his comrades enjoyed.
8. One day, he was thrown from a stolen horse near the French lines.
Frightened that he would be captured or killed, he vowed to change his life
9. He was expelled for negligence in taking care of his company's
profits (he was saved at the last moment from being hanged).
10. He fought again in the troops of the Count of Oropesa in
1532, to the aid of Charles I in Vienna, besieged by the Turks.
11. Upon his return to Spain, upon landing on the Galician coast, he
returned to Portugal to reconnect with his origins. But this wish was
seriously frustrated: his parents had died; only his uncle remained.
12. After he left the army, he worked
as a shepherd for many years
13. He decided to sail to
Africa to rescue the
Christian kingdoms
from the Moors.
On the same ship,
he found the knight
Almeyda, his wife
and his four
daughters, all of
them banished to
Ceuta by the king
of Portugal.
14. The father hired him as a servant, but soon they all fell ill,
spending the little fortune they had, finding themselves
in the need to ask Juan de Dios for help.
15. Already showing the enormous charity that would make
him a saint, he set to work rebuilding the city walls,
maintaining everyone from his salary.
16. Later he went to Gibraltar, where he became
a traveling salesman of books and prints.
17. From there he moved permanently to Granada in
1538, and opened a small bookstore in Puerta de
Elvira. The bookstore allowed him to come into
contact with devotional and religious literature.
18. 1539. Hearing a sermon preached by Saint John of Ávila in
the Hermitage of the Martyrs, his conversion took place.
19. The words of
the saint from
La Mancha moved
him so such that
he began to destroy
the books he sold;
he wandered through
the city; The children
stoned him and
everyone made
fun of him.
20. His behavior was that of a madman and, as such,
he was locked up in the Royal Hospital. There he
dealt with the sick and beggars and organized
his ideas and spirit through deep reflection.
21. After this change he went on a pilgrimage to the sanctuary
of the Virgin of Guadalupe in Extremadura.
22. There his purpose
matured and at
the feet of the
Virgin he
promised to give
himself to the
poor, the sick
and all the
disadvantaged
in the world.
24. The resources he had were his own capacity
for work and the generosity of the people.
25. He tried to finance his plan by selling wood in the square. At
night, he took what little money he had earned and brought food
and comfort to the poor living in abandoned buildings and under
bridges. Thus his first hospital was the streets of Granada
26. At first Juan used the houses of the
benefactors of him to welcomethe
sick and disadvantaged of the city.
Soon he had to rent a house, on
Lucena Street, where he set
up his first hospital.
27. Little by little his fame grew in Granada,
and the bishop gave him the name Juan de Dios.
28. He went
out into
the streets
and carried
his ill patients
back on
his shoulders.
29. Once there he cleaned them, dressed
their wounds, and mended their
clothes at night while he prayed
30. He brought together a group of people who would
continue his work (the Brotherhood of John of God).
31. In the following ten years his work grew and he
opened another hospital in Cuesta de Gomérez.
He was an innovator of hospital care of his time.
32. when the Royal
Hospital caught
fire,he rushed
into the blazing
building and
carried or led
the patients out.
33. When all the patients were rescued, he started saving blankets,
sheets, and mattresses by throwing them out the window
34. When he ran up to the roof to separate the burning portion
of the building with an axe, he fell through the burning roof.
he appeared miraculously out of the smoke. For this reason,
John of God is patron saint of firefighter
35. His works multiplied and the number of his disciples grew -
among whom stood out Antón Martín, creator of the Hospital
of the Order in Madrid called Our Lady of the Love of God –
and the foundations of his work over time were laid.
36. On March 8, 1550, at the age of 55, Juan de Dios died in
Granada, a victim of pneumonia as a result of having jumped
into the Genil river to save a young man who was drowning
37. He was beatified by Pope Urban VIII on September 1, 1630.
and canonized by Pope Alexander VIII, on October 16, 1690.
He was named patron saint of hospitals and the sick
38. Saint John of God was buried in the convent of Victoria
in Granada (Carmen de los Mínimos) in the year 1550.
39. His remains remained there until November 28, 1664,
when the brothers of his order moved them to the
church of the Hospital of San Juan de Dios.
40. In 1757 a new transfer took place when the
Basilica that bears his name was built, in
whose dressing room they rest definitively
41. His personality
and Work
-he was sensitive, human,
Christian and social.
-he went out to meet those
in need and welcomed them
without setting conditions
for their assistance.
Everyone in need had
the right to be cared for.
-he dveloped pioneering
care methods in his time.
He gave comprehensive care
for the person in need,
respecting their dignity and
defending their rights.
